erel Hatton may have recorded his best ever finish at a major championship on Sunday but the Englishman was left ruing a moment he believes cost him a chance at US Open Glory the 33-year-old was firmly in the mix during a tense final round at Oakmont even holding a share of the lead at one stage but two bogeies down the stretch including a frustrating moment on the 17th hole dashed his hopes of clinching a maiden major hatton believes a poor break on the penultimate hole was the turning point “it was a pretty tough day,” Hatton admitted “for the most part I play pretty well although I struggled a bit after the restart missed a few right but the finish really stings on 17 with that pin position you have to miss it right i did exactly that and still ended up in a brutal spot i honestly feel I was extremely unlucky.” He added “What happened on 17 is going to hurt for a long time it was my first time really contending in a major which was exciting but I think a bit of bad luck stole my momentum and ultimately cost me when pressed by a reporter on what exactly he meant by bad luck Hatton’s frustration bubbled over why was it bad luck he snapped why do you think what kind of question is that you’ve seen where it stopped on a downs slope in the rough that’s ridiculous if you miss that green you’re supposed to miss it right and end up in the bunker i felt like I did what I needed to do and still got punished that’s just not fair hatton’s trademark cander continued as the emotional roller coaster of the final moments unfolded while watching JJ Spawn sink the winning putt Hatton could only shake his head oh he’s hold it he said unbelievable what a putt to win that’s incredible despite his own disappointment Hatton had high praise for Robert McIntyre who finished just one shot behind Spawn’s winning score he’s had a fantastic week Hatton said to finish solo second in a major he’s an amazing player he won in Canada and the Scottish Open last year with his dad on the bag for Canada winning his home open was pretty epic he’s a great guy and someone I respect a lot i’m sure he’ll be good to come up just short but he played brilliantly hatton may have walked away without a trophy but his passion honesty and competitive fire once again made him one of the most compelling figures of the tournament
