J.J. Spaun, Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy on Travelers preparations | Golf Central | Golf Channel

golf Central on YouTube is brought to you by the new Chrome Tour Golf Ball from Callaway in the last couple days you’ve become a US Open champion gone to number three in the RDER Cup standings very busy the last two days where’s your head right now as you prepare to play this tournament i’m not like fully in the clouds still but we’re we’re getting a little below the ceiling the the cloud ceiling but yeah it’s been you know a whirlwind and everything that the aftermath of this whole um championship has has been so crazy but so much fun and all these doors opening it’s it’s stuff that you you know you don’t expect you know ever really to happen in your career you know you you know the Dodgers reaching out and uh you know RDER Cup potential and you know the today’s show it’s just it’s insane but um I’m super grateful to to have won the championship and and be given this experience you know and something I’ll never forget obviously for the rest of my life um I guess I’m a part of history now we’re going to go to the back right over here hey JJ what was the timeline kind of like between you know winning the US Open and you know where you are right now oh it was crazy i um got whisked off the green and then back onto the green probably around 8:45 uh p.m and then did the whole formalities of you know the ceremony uh signing a bunch of memorabilia obviously getting the trophy seeing it get engraved uh the USGA did a great job of kind of giving us our own little room to kind of hang out and chill you know all night and till whenever we wanted to leave so uh we didn’t leave till about 1:00 a.m uh we didn’t leave Oakmont until 1:00 a.m back down to Pittsburgh where I was staying and then it was you know a quick 3 hours of sleep um I I got back at 1:30 and I just kind of sat in bed and you know but trying to you know maybe go through my phone took a quick shower tried going through my phone to respond to some people and and just tried to you know see what was going on to help me like you know soak it in and and realize that it actually happened um because it’s just been such a blur since then and then we were off to New York City um I had a nice dinner with my family on Monday night and we went to uh uh do all the media 6:00 am on Tuesday morning didn’t finish it was literally non-stop didn’t finish till 3:30 4:00 hopped in a car got driven up here that was about 3 and 1/2 hours so didn’t walk through the front door of the hotel till 8:00 p.m and then finally got some good sleep though i slept about 8 hours which is nice so the last two nights I got you know the same amount as I did last night combined yeah and you know over the last you know day or so like who are some of the coolest people that have you know reached out to you to congratulate you um yeah I heard from George Lopez um comedian actor from Los Angeles Betts who was actually my proam partner at Pebble Beach um Scott Vanpelt uh a lot of a lot of people i mean I’m I’m still like halfway through my messages um Curtis Strange Hail Irwin um just some great champions you know too that have been there and know what it’s like so people that I’ve never even talked to but it was it was great all right we’re going to go over here on the left Jack uh JJ I was looking through your iron specs after the win and I I saw they’re not exactly off the rack is that something you like to dive into or is that something you just kind of leave it to your team at tricks on to handle for you yeah it’s it’s definitely something that I’ve uh been kind of a standard I’ve been playing for the last whatever almost eight nine years with them um I don’t have you know an incrementally you know sound I guess progression and lies and stuff and loss it’s just kind of been I like to tweak it to how where I feel like it needs to be to help me hit what I want with that club and uh it’s just been yeah something that the team at Stricks has you know just kind of kept very consistent and you know we haven’t changed anything really at all you’ve talked about like trying to find a new Mount Everest a new like new motivation is playing around the world part of that you seem to be going on a world tour this year yeah um you know I’ve always wanted to go to India um and the European tour and DP World created a new event there so um you know I was asked at the start of the year would I be interested in going and you know I said yeah like that sounds amazing it’s in a part you know I you know I the hero Indian Open’s always like when we’re it’s like March April time so I’d love to go play DLF and you know try to you know figure my way around that place but um you know this one in in in Delhi in in October made more sense um I’ve always loved the Australian Open um you know I’ve I’ve won there before um you know I played there as an amateur in the Australian Open qualified for it went through a qualifier in 2005 got through like a nineman playoff to to get in um so I’ve always had a you know a huge affinity for that part of the world so to go back especially you know Royal Melbourne this next year Kingston Heath next year two of the best golf courses in the world on the sand belt um you know that’s that’s awesome too um but yeah I you know that it’s that’s the part of the year where we have the opportunity to travel and to and to do these things um and if it makes sense for the schedule and especially look I I’m excited to you know there’s never been a green jacket in India before so to bring the green jacket to India is something that’s going to be really cool um you know to go back to the Australian Open um you know I won that in 2013 adam and I had a great battle down the stretch on the last day he was the Masters champion at that point so I don’t know I just I I like to travel you know i like to play in different parts of the world and um you know there’s you know I’ve never been to India i haven’t been to Australia in 10 years you know so it’s it’s nice to go back to last year 22 under par got you into a playoff i mean 22 under par didn’t even win is this course given it’s the last signature event on the PJ tour for the season is this course too easy you know golf’s golf’s funny in that sense i think people people when they watch golf it’s not like other sports where you want us to look like y’all when we play golf i think it’s just kind of one of those funny things it’s like you watch the NBA and you’re like man I wish that I wish they couldn’t dunk you know i wish they could I wish they were scoring less i wish their shooting percentage was lower on three-pointers and like if you watch tennis you’re like man I wish I wish the ball was going slower so they so they looked like you know me out there playing tennis it’s it’s not like that you know as much as some people want us to feel like them you know professional golf is different than amateur golf you know we get a lot of time to prepare to go out and play and the guys out here are really good at golf like if you stand there on the driving range and you watch a range session that ball doesn’t go offline very often and I think sometimes especially in this day and age people get way too caught up in the winning score um being what is a proper test i think a proper test is good shots being rewarded and bad shots being punished i think this is one of the best golf courses for that um there’s opportunity out there and there’s also punishment like you look at the the closing stretch 15 if you hit a good shot you got a birdie opportunity if you try and bail out right you’re going to be a bunker short right at the green you’re going to have a 40-yard bunker shot it’s a hard shot 16 if you hit a good shot you’re going to have a good look at birdie if you bail out and go long it’s a tough tough chip down the hill 17 if you hit the fairway you’re gonna have a chance to hit in there close to the pin if you hit in the left rough you probably can’t get to the green i mean that’s what we look for in golf courses in terms of you want good shots to be rewarded and bad shots to be punished it’s it’s as simple as that and the winning score I think people get way too caught up in and that’s I’m not saying necessarily that even par is a bad winning score like some weeks like the US Open you hit two great shots and you’re going to get rewarded with a par and that’s fine i think that’s good too i think across the board the way we get tested in professional golf is is very good i think we play different types of golf courses we play different types of grass we play different types of winning scores um we just see different tests and I think not one is better than the other but the the most frustrating thing for me when I play a golf tournament is when you see good shots not getting rewarded and bad shots not being punished properly that’s really all we look for so do I care that 22 under wins this week no like I played good last year and um if they somehow change it to 12 under by making the pins in silly spots and doing stuff to trick up the golf course what we want is a fair test and I think having birdies at the end sometime is a pretty exciting finish i mean it’s really all there is to it

  1. he wants to immediately play another tournament. Why? He has plenty of money and nothing to prove. This week should be devoted to soaking up a brilliant moment with his family–and esp his wife who spends 70% of her time alone raising the 2 kids
