Paige Spiranac Sends Strong Message on Rory McIlroy After Backlash originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
The World No. 2 Rory McIlroy came under fire this week at the U.S. Open when he opted out of media interviews following rounds one and two at Oakmont Country Club, citing frustration with the media and asserting that he has “earned the right to do whatever I want to do” under PGA Tour rules.

He finally addressed reporters after a third-round 74, describing his decision as “not out of the ordinary” and driven by “frustration,” not his play.
After McIlroy’s pointed “I’ve earned the right” line sparked debate among fans and fellow pros, golf influencer Paige Spiranac took to X with a rallying defense of the four‑time major champion.
“Might be an unpopular opinion here but he doesn’t have to talk to the media if he doesn’t want to.” She reiterated. “It’s not required. And why would he when everyone is always analyzing and criticizing his every move. There is clearly something more going on none of us are privy to so maybe let’s not all pile on.”

“I’m sure people are going to be mad at him for throwing a club but 1. We’ve all been there and have thrown a golf club 2. This was sick,” She added, talking about McIlroy throwing his golf club and catching it on the rebound.

Her defense also comes on the heels of McIlroy’s candid acknowledgment that a leaked report about his non-conforming driver at the PGA Championship fed into his reluctance to engage with reporters.
Fans suspect that McIlroy is dealing with a deeper issue beyond what’s visible, and that this is the reason for his recent drop in performance. Spiranac’s message underscores exactly that point.
McIlroy has also openly expressed his reluctance to play at Oakmont.
“It’s funny, like, it’s much easier being on the cut line when you don’t really care if you’re here for the weekend or not,” He said. “I was sort of thinking, do I really want two more days here or not? So it makes it easier to play better when you’re in that mindset.”
