Scott Van Pelt is joined by “Stanford Steve” Coughlin on SVPod to react to Sam Burns’ controversial denied relief ruling on the waterlogged 15th at Oakmont, which led to a costly double-bogey and derailed his U.S. Open title hopes.

you’re pissed at the USGAA Go ahead The leader is in the fairway and he has to stand in and hit a ball on the freaking PTOIC River I don’t know man A lot of the rules McJany’s on Twitter are telling me well actually those are my favorites I I And the biggest problem I have and I knew it was going to happen because it was getting so controversial never saw the replay of the club hitting the ball If there’s one shot in the tournament you want to see the effects And all this has been made He went over for two I didn’t even know you could ask for two opinions right if you don’t like if you if you think the first one’s wrong it’s like that’s a way of basically saying “Are you sure about that?” Yeah And you’re entitled to ask again Correct And good for Sam Burns And we never we we see the replay of him smashing the club on the and then it’s just a geyser comes out of the water Um but I just thought it it was not it wasn’t right for those circumstances and how it plays out when you get a weather delay Yes the last guys off are going to have to play the most holes with with a different course and you know you saw how the math worked out and I mean shout out to McIntyre uh for just coming in and I mean trying to shut the door Big Bob I mean hell of a job uh wouldn’t let anything get in his way And you just saw Adam Burns and and and Adam Scott just they’re left there hanging And uh but I I don’t want to take anything away because the way Spawn did it It’s two different conversations Yes Because the Spawn piece we’ll get to it was earned as both he and Tier Hatton I love it’s a it’s a very sort of European saying fair play Hatton was being interviewed live as the putt was made and his reaction was great because I really like Tier Everyone has that they they think he’s he’s mental They just think he’s an insane person He’s actually quite charming and lovely Yeah On a golf course he goes nuclear quite a bit but as he’s watching that and he’s like “Oh he’s made it.” Oh what a way to win Bad play I mean it was an incredible puff But that’s that’s Tier’s reaction and McIntyre the Scott the left-handed Scott by the way No lefties ever won the US Open just an odd sort of circumstance Bill Mickelson came twice came close six times a runner up And McIntyre watches him make it just starts clapping in the in the scorers area and just goes “Wow what else is there to say but that?” But to what to the point you’re making on Burns it rained so hard and that golf course is saturated and they’re squeegeeing from the fairway to the area where Burns is on the far side of a fairway And I get it If you can you can take me a picture of the rules and say if you’re standing there and it’s not the water is not blah blah blah figure it out The water was right there at the surface And again this is where golf Twitter you’re a delight give me your interpretations the rules People are getting relief all over the golf course but not Burns in that moment And I think it’s a mistake And by the way people that I’m like big-time players whether it was on Twitter or by text I had one guy say to me “Look that’s a 10 out of 10 relief.” If it’s a regular event you don’t even ask for a ruling You’re playing partner you’re like “Hey I’m going to Yeah for sure No questions asked.” No questions asked Relief Wasn’t in this instance It led to a double Adam Scott mentioned on 11 You might have seen he hit one that was just sort of inexplicably off These guys are so precise if they could hit a fairway and unfortunately for Scotty as an Adam Scott just couldn’t find one when you expect the contact to be pure but the club kind of hydroplanes it You have no idea where the ball’s going None You need a hoverboard to hit the ball In some of these circumstances you did And so for people to be getting relief here but not here that’s the And I guess that’s like any officiating right is this a block or a charge well you called one thing here you don’t call there I get it That I I believed it was an unfortunate um ruling at at a really critical time Now we’ve talked about how players have been handling themselves after unfortunate situations or just factually not wanting to talk I cannot tell you how impressed I was with Sam Burns after Yep Like just got up there and took it and you know plenty has been made Um you know I’m sure we’ll get to to Rory and and that whole thing and and the idea of speaking but to get up there and take it man that guy is cruising up my favorite golfers just because of that the way he handled it And everybody’s watching and everybody knows what’s going to happen When that happens it’s done He’s not making up He’s not birdie Birdie birdie There’s no way John Rom did which shout out to Gordo Boy did he save your ass Oh Oh we’ll get to Oh yeah He’s That report card’s coming See if he picks up the phone Um and see if he wants to face the music Take it Like Sam Burns did But Sam Burns was un unbelievable And then Adam Scott coming in like you’ve known Adam Scott forever Uh you know it’s cool because he gets that limelight and then Saturday night happens and everybody starts branching off of who they’re rooting for and everything but Adam Scott like just there what was it 90 something majors now in a stupid um and you’re like you know the Green Jackets’s an alltimer him in the rain getting it finally Uh and then it’s been that long Um would have been would have been the longest stretch in between majors but just look the way he’s been playing and he had a rough Sunday just could not hit a fairway But the way he’s played this year I don’t think that’s his last swing at it Um and I by swing at it I mean a chance to contend and be there on Sunday And that’s really all this is about It’s why you used to hear Tiger all the time talk about just you want to have four times a year have your game peaking It’s hard to make it happen So much of it’s just good fortune and circumstance and when when does your time show up But I couldn’t agree more on Burns because I mean I I said on Twitter “If that’s me I’d have been arrested I’d have been absolutely out of my skull out of my tree that that that happened.” And he was incredibly stoic after the fact He said it He described what it was and he said “And that was that.” Now he could have gone anywhere but he didn’t How Louisiana people are I love them Oh Tigers Just give me the replay of the shot I just want to see the club hitting it Well you did see him slam at the ground and it was just as you described it a geyser I mean that’s how much water there was there I mean it changed the chant from here we go Steelers to here we go squeegeees when they started squeegeeing the course and man it was you know me and the wet fronts and the radar and I couldn’t it was just spinning There was just these orange blobs and it was just it rained like that here the other night Holy crap Middle of the night Charlie comes in my room Dad are we going to have a flood like why do you think why do you think he goes “It’s raining so hard.” Said “Go back to bed son We’re going to be all right.” He literally thought there was going to be a guy out back with animals paired up two by two building a boat Excuse me an ark No it didn’t flood here

Sam Burns should sue the USGA

I agree, I can't find ANY close up camera shot of that stroke. It's almost like the USGA (or whoever runs the US Open) didn't want the viewers to see that stroke at all.

As a retired touring pro, the game was never meant to be fair. In fact, you won’t find the word in the Rule Book. Only the adverb ‘fairly’ in describing taking your stance. The whole thing in that situation is to assume an imaginary stance and tap your heels as strongly as possible. We all know this.
This should be the headline of game 4 of the NBA finals.
Bro people are dying in Gaza!!!!
Gaza !
I'm surprised some enterprising engineers haven't come up with some devices to measure surface water so its out of a human call. I also think they should change the divot rule. If you hit the fairway at the US OPEN, you get a drop from it. The Masters has crews that eliminate divots after the round is completed. Why can't the USGA? They have stats for every tournament played. Seems it wouldn't be that difficult to get the turf repaired. They know where every shot was played from for every round by every player. I know it's the breaks but you shouldn't be penalized because the grounds aren't properly cared for for an event of that stature! I'm sure you could get all the volunteer help you need.
The US Open rules officials are the best there are. If two of them checked it and told him to play on, then I trust that.
Burns didn’t lose because of that shot and hole.
SCOTT HIT A 130 YARD SHOT OUT OF A WATER SOAKED FAIRWAY THAT WENT 160 YARDS. OVER THE GREEN LEAD TO DB .
I love the 'two opinions' situations. That's the way to a 7 hour round. I remember Sergio Garcia getting a ruling where he got relief, while in a hazard no less, because he said he wanted to go toward an immovable obstruction etc.'…that ruling took about 10 minutes is all. The USGA effed this up. That did not need two rulings, it needed one man with common sense.
Sorry but there was water every where. It was pouring out there.
Water soaked fairway? The rough was ridiculous. I have never enjoyed watching the US Open and its getting worse. Put some bouncy castles on the greens next year.
I was gutted for Burns, over his play on the back 9 & the call on 15… but stoked for JJ! I love having an American win the US Open & JJ deserved it. I'm hopefully JJ will get another major at some point, he seemed extremely even keeled & unflappable out there. Burns time will come tho, he's too good not to win a major or 3 over his career
Playing Oakmont when its on steroids like it was is just stupid. I get that you want to challenge the players but missing fairways there penalizes players to a far greater degree than any other course. And you should be rewarded for hitting fairways by having a fairly reasonable opportunity to hit a good approach shot, but that isnt the case at Oakmont either. We dont need to see guys at -20 in majors but i'd like to see how guys would fare on that course when it is set up like a normal tour event.
