Is Oakmont Too Brutal for the U.S. Open? Golfers Speak Out 🔥

Oakmont is back in the spotlight — and not for reasons the USGA may have hoped. This year’s U.S. Open venue has drawn sharp criticism from top players like Matt Fitzpatrick, Jhonattan Vegas, and Michael Kim, who are calling out the course’s extreme rough, ultra-fast greens, and what they see as an “unfair” layout.

In this video, we break down the growing controversy surrounding Oakmont’s punishing design, Fitzpatrick’s blunt comments, and why many believe the USGA may have gone too far this time. Is it a true test of championship golf, or a setup designed to break even the best? You decide.

📊 Only 3 players are under par after two rounds — and that statistic says it all.

it’s becoming increasingly clear that Oakmont the fearsome host of this year’s US Open is not winning any popularity contests among the players known for its punishing rough lightning fast greens and brutal overall setup the Pennsylvania course has sparked plenty of frustration and some players aren’t hiding it while many have chosen to bite their tongues others have made their opinions crystal clear ahead of the championship PGA Tour winner Janatin Vegas didn’t hold back calling the rough at Oakmont unplayable michael Kim went even further slamming the infamous Greens as Mickey Mouse now former US Open champion Matt Fitzpatrick has joined the chorus of criticism branding the course setup simply unfair currently sitting at nine overpar and tied for 50th the Englishman vented his thoughts in an interview with the Daily Mails Ryth Al Samurai i personally don’t think it’s fair Fitzpatrick stated there’s hard but fair golf and then there’s just straight up unfair oakmont falls into that latter category in my opinion fitzpatrick who famously won the 2022 US Open didn’t hold back in describing what he sees as a deeply flawed setup it doesn’t always reward good shots and it punishes bad shots too severely i’ve been vocal for years about rough graduation where a shot that lands just inches off the fairway can be punished more than one that misses by 40 yards it doesn’t make sense and then there are the greens slick sloped and according to many bordering on ridiculous when the greens are this extreme any slight miss becomes magnified i get that it’s the same for everyone and I know it always sounds like sour grapes when a player complains he admitted but there’s a line and this course might be crossing it fitzpatrick wasn’t just speaking emotionally he pointed to a revealing stat you’ve got only three guys under par after two rounds that tells you everything you need to know about how this course is playing i’m all for a tough US Open where par is a good score but this feels excessive despite his criticism Fitzpatrick emphasized that he respects the US Golf Association and its tournaments i’m a huge fan of the USGAA i played in 11 US Opens and experienced the full range of their setups i know what tough butt fair looks like and this doesn’t feel like that he also referenced to telling remark from Xander Chauffell earlier in the week xander said people watch the US Open to see pros shoot eight over and call a good round i totally agree that’s what sets this event apart from a typical week where 25 under wins it’s supposed to be challenging but doesn’t need to be this extreme as the championship heads into its decisive stages the debate over Oakmont’s severity won’t die down one thing is clear the players are feeling the heat and not just from the summer sun
