The opening tournament featured rainy and windy conditions, resulting in some very interesting gameplay, with some games maxing out at eight rounds. In total, there were also three Win Shots thrown, all through the slot.
For Pool Play, every team played 10 games, with Charles Rizzo & Ajay Cybulski (Young Guns) claiming the #1 seed with a record of 9-1. The top two teams received a bye for the first round of the bracket, which included #2 seed Jon Sandino & Chad Cowell (JC Dynasty).
In the first round, #3 seed Micah Fairbanks & Jacob Fairbanks (Total Discheads) took down Ultimate enthusiasts and newcomers, #6 seed Flat Ballers Inc (Benjamin Goodman & Jeffrey Woelfel), while Matthew Lafferty & Connor Pierce (Macon Pilaf, #4 seed) defeated David Morrison & Clay Baron (Medical Trening, #5 seed).
Rizzo/Cybulski swept Lafferty/Pierce in the Semi-Finals best-of-5 series, while Sandino/Cowell took down M. Fairbanks/J. Fairbanks also in three games to advance.

[Music] hello and welcome to the 2023 this Flex season kickoff we are located here in not so Sunny Kenmore New York I’m here with my friend and partner John sandino how you doing today John doing well and as you mentioned I’m really curious to see how the teams adjust to today’s windy and wet conditions here in Ken more New York a beautiful suburb of Buffalo New York absolutely these are some top tier teams let’s see how they Brave El versus the two seed so we’ll have Young Guns versus JC Dynasty we’ll do a flip who wants to do the honors I’ll flip it flip it go ahead you’re calling it you’re the caller heads hammer it is heads your choice all right they’re doing these ceremonial flip decide who gets the hammer basically who gets to throw second usually kind of like having the home team in baseball Charles Rizzo stepping up first for Young Guns team that has been on fire the last couple years you could see right there the wind took that to the right of the goal and there you are absolutely right John there are some tough conditions out here you see one of the top teams in the world and there already struggling off the bat and even that even though the throw looked like it was right over the wind was pushing it which made it difficult for Chad did you notice the one had approach there Conor do you think in conditions like that that’s wise I I do I do at this point you’re really trying to to scr your points right as he throws a perfect throw there you’re trying to scr your points as much as you can and you see the wind that’s taking everything oh that was a great Jam by him there way to really stay concentrated up top wouldn’t expect anything last out of the Young Guns let’s see how JC Dynasty responds cutting through the wind you can see the probes to the throw there absolutely you got if we if we see on on that one side of JC Dynasty there they’re really getting the the nose up of the disc that helps it cut through the wind a little bit more very good throw and just look at the look at the shorts look look at the the pdfa banners you can just see the wind is really these players you can and and I’m I’m actually seeing that um it’s affecting the side of Chad Cowell and AJ cybulski a little bit more on the other side um it looks like they’re kind of throwing into a little bit of a headwind where you you and um Charles over there got a little bit of a Tailwind on you as I’m seeing those throws are a little bit more on top not being affected as much by the wind and what an adjustment by Chad Kyle to go down and get it not easy not easy at all not at all especially fighting the wind so one thing that I want to monitor here today Connor is how long are these games going to go are we going to hit the max amount of rounds because the wind is definitely keeping the score lower than it typically would be at this point yes it absolutely is especially in the top tiers of the pro division you rarely see those those games hit that Max limit as you see here the flight of that disc it it got up wind got up and then it got right under it it dropped straight down right over there you’re really you you can be as good as you want but you’re up to the mercy of the wind here exactly Young Guns last round made it look easy JC dasty fires off with a three and a one keeping it within distance here normally I’d say 1612 favors Young Guns but with these wind conditions anything anything’s happening but of course Mr automatic Charles Rizzo see if you can plug a to here all right they get the one still in the driver’s seat at this point but they JC Dynasty is still in contention correct now they’re really looking for Chad to just get his throw over so Jon has a little bit of an ability to tip it there we go they have two throws left seen as they have the hammer so if this is not where John sanino wants it he may just simply opt yep yeah and and that’s okay um especially in in the sport of disle you technically have one throw that you you don’t need in their position these season veterans they know and understand that they only needed six points so instead of taking the one they they caught it there to make sure they can be on the sixes here now we’re going to need double buckets here from JC Dynasty to force overtime John taking his time perfect throw right over all right let’s see if Chad can return to his partner oh good effort on a day like today that one is great effort but obviously 21 is the name of the game Young Guns do take game one yes in this best of Five series to go up one nothing see the wind knocks it straight down there and the note I had for from the last game there is um Chad Cowell on the on the far side over there of JC Dynasty he’s throwing with a little bit of an anheiser like a little bit of an opposite um disc oh it looks like they they switch sides a little bit okay okay I was just going to mention about the tailwind and headwind but it looks like they are implementing the rule that they can switch sides to gain an advantage and it looks like they’re going to let John try to throw with a little bit more challenging wind here um I think I think that’s a great idea as you see he he keeps his disc a lot more flat and it can cut through the wind a lot easier than the way that Chad throws oh right at the end that rises up just enough usually for a top tier player like AJ that is an easy bucket oh boy this this condition is just is just not easy credit to Chad Kyle for hanging for hanging in there he is playing with three people beautiful throw by K three people that have won multiple World Championships yes yes absolutely and you see these multiple World Championship winners and they’re struggling it really shows you how difficult these conditions are but that is a big momentum shift right there with JC Dynasty up 7 nothing with the hammer very close on that one tries to keep with it but just misses 72 JC Dynasty JC Dynasty with the hammer looking to put the momentum in their favor one more time looks like looks like that was a zero there yep it sure does Conor we’re just looking to to get a couple more points here points are come at a premium during these conditions oh great effort by Chad C didn’t result any points but he’s leaving it all out there today he is yep that started low and went High see Charles R was getting a chuckle I think he was referencing Chad’s UPS there oh and again one point for for Young Guns at this point Conor any point is a good is a good point it is it really is and you see you see the way that he he he he tipped it it flew up and went straight back anything they can do right now and you can even see the players kind of just chuckling because they know that they’re they’re phenomenal throwers and uh tippers but just the wind is the wind is just getting the best of them you can hear them trying to communicate cuz I think each player kind of knows which way the wind is going exactly but it just it just changes mid midf flight all right if you Ste yeah absolutely if you stepped away for a moment and came back that score is correct it’s still 8 to3 JC Dynasty the wind is uh getting the best of both teams here it absolutely is and especially with the weight and the dimensions there what a throw the dimensions that have to have the disc in a certain area those they just really get carried With the Wind there’s not much you can do besides try to spin it through correct also noticed a little bit of a little bit of rain has started to come down Conor this is interesting because if you pull a 100 different players some will tell you the wind affects them more some the rain as you see Chad throw with the rain wind combo what conditions do you prefer to play in the least um I I definitely think the um the wind I prefer to play in the least um I I personally have a lighter throw and try to float it over a little bit more so when I have to spin it and put a little bit more of a spin on it um a little bit more velocity on it it tends to mess up my whole Rhythm so I would personally rather play in the wind and even just float it right over there interesting I think I’m the opposite I over the years I’ve learned to adjust with the wind the the rain it just the the path that this kicks off my hand and fingers it feels like it’s slipping like you’re losing grip um yeah absolutely and that that’s what makes a great team in there you have one person that if they can really get through the wind there that makes it perfect that they can be throwing on the headwind side no points 9 to8 you got to think they’re they’re they’re heading closer to that that round limit yep yep exactly Connor there is a round limit that is now implemented so if neither team does hit 21 after eight rounds I think eight rounds and you could hear them say we have we have two rounds left y um just I was just trying to listen into the to the players there so I think at this point the odds of either team getting 21 are slim it’s just going to be a race points race right now to see who has the most at the end of that that final round exactly and you see AJ cyoli right there he he turned his hands at the bottom at the end I wonder if that had anything to do with the the disc hurting his hands afterwards cuz I’ve played in these conditions before and it hurts if you really get a good piece of it so I wonder if that’s playing into any of the decisions they’re making for the strategy of tipping you can see the Grimace on Chad Kyle’s face and shaking his head as he’s getting ready to throw the wind just right in his face I know we keep mentioning wind here today but it is a factor folks absolutely if you look back oh at least he got one there if you look back at any of the other tournaments you’ll see and at this level it’s most of the time constant three after three after three bucket after bucket after bucket and these teams are just looking to stick with it as much as possible exactly Young Guns with a clutch Four Points to tie it up yeah you see AJ cybulski he kind of rushed that last throw maybe he saw and caught a little bit of a pocket of wind that just died down yeah I felt I felt a little die down in the wind and I know if that’s the case players will step up and throw before the win picks up absolutely all right so that is game right there folks um that is the round Maxim yes absolutely hit the round they only needed one point there JC Dynasty did to take game two and they did so this series is tied at one and that’s the first win for JC Dynasty in over a decade these two actually started to play together back in 2008 and it’s the first time they’ve reunited in many years for this tournament so these two are familiar with one another going up against the the team of the the current time the Young Guns who are just on fire with multiple World Championships absolutely you got to think it’s the experience versus the youth in this right there Young Guns and now I always felt that the Young Guns a team a great team regardless but you give them hammer and I feel like they are unbeatable absolutely that was a great effort there trying to stick with it Salvage any points like we talked about before Oh that was a great Jam great Jam sh Charles Rizo stepping up oh beautiful set by AJ saoli there reading the disc perfectly getting the three and right back what what a beautiful sixpack for right back to him that puts the momentum right onto JC Dynasty especially with Young Guns having the hammer ooh yeah I I I I don’t know if he was trying for it but if if he was that was pretty close I’ve never once heard a player get an instant win and say they weren’t trying for it they’re always going to take credit so you’re you are completely right I’ve fallen victim to that a couple times myself oh and Charles Rizo says anything you do Chad K I could do maybe better it looks like it yep that puts him right back on the right numbers they need three buckets right here to close out this game o nice three we always talk about numbers Conor even though they’re at 15 the Young Guns and only need double buckets here I don’t know if that carries as much weight today with with this wind again it’s all about points it does you’re absolutely right you have to keep accumulating those points and in indoors the points are a little bit more impactful if you will but at this point they can just double bucket right here for the win if John say need to wishes he could have that that round back he missed a pretty easy three and then um the throw got away from him see right here a three right here seals it oh he gets a one but that’s okay they still have the hammer they’re still in position to win you got to think JC Dynasty here is either going to go for instant win slots or they’re going to try to recorrect their throws so they can get better for game four correct Conor and you could even see it uh Chad and John were communicating were just saying let’s just go for the for the wind slot they’re out of range John’s throws have been pretty on so far so I’m not sure he needs it he’s looking to really plug this oh had the height just not the angle two points normally it’s a walk in the park for Young Guns but let’s see just barely just barely gets it if anywhere around Conor but again AJ is really shaking his his hands like it hurts and there’s the one back Young Guns take the game 21 to 11 go up two games to one but back to my point it almost appears as though Charles Rizzo has a beautiful throw is putting more speed on than normal just to try to cut the wind and I think AJ saow is feeling it no I I I completely agree with that um you really are you really got to hit that disc down very with a lot of force very hard and it does a number on your hands and especially with this wind you really got to go at it so they’re definitely feeling it I wonder if that’s affecting their strategies for where these people are putting their throws exactly Young Guns are hitting a Groove now even in this wind and we’ve seen this plenty of times with them before they get on this type of of roll they’re stop they’re tough to stop but oh that was a great great Jam way to save his partner he bailed him out of that point there look like Tien by the wind a little bit beautiful deflect there by Chad C not things up at four but Charles Rizzo again and AJ I can feel that one over here I could too I could to oh oh that was a great Jam way to stay with it Charles that’s one of the the stereotypical Young Guns threes interesting approach there with the with the one hand there I think with the wind they’re just trying to out these players get themselves in a position that they feel the most comfortable with you can see Chad K seeing the same thing but unfortunately the wind just had other plans this is a pedal moment here for Young Guns if they could get a three they could really put this out of range if not JC Dynasty with hammer stays in the game and the series o and no points and he he gets he gets the angle it looked to me like that was going straight in and the wind straightened it out and flattened it out right before the Canon Conor and we keep we keep stressing this but these teams aren’t just playing each other today they’re playing against the wind they are they really are I mean there was wind gusts as high as 33 M an hour today and that is really affecting the way everybody makes their strategies right there that’s an easy bucket for most every team especially the Young Guns and concentration just throws you off it does and you mentioned 33 m per hour wind you combine that with these frigid late May 52 degree temperatures we have you understand why AJ sa balski right now has some sore hands and fingers absolutely I can feel it from here smart veteran move by Chad to step back and wait and adjust I’m not so sure that hit they’re looking at each other nope no no points on that still 11 to eight just just under it a little bit more he needed to be and then he would have caught that back corner so we have a two-point game can’t miss that one that one was perfect exactly young 15 to n here in game four jnasty just looking to stay with them keep the momentum going try to get them off of it again normally I think we would catch that right us as players but a point is today AB absolutely normally that’s a catch stay on the threes you see Chad he he walked he walked to the right then he had to move back left he still Salvage the one point there way to stay on it we may we may coin that the K one hop moving forward what a great play he’s smirking in the background he knows it oh what what happened there Conor that look I don’t know I don’t think he got anything no he didn’t did you get a three oh that’s that’s that’s a big three there that’s that’s a big three to stay in the numbers JC Dynasty needs okay that’s all right they can still they can still get it they needed the one eventually three here puts him right on and it’s there oh unfortunate bounce there for JC Dynasty you see JN really having to put some extra zip in his throw and I wonder if that’s messing up Chad’s tipping style and you’ve played with John in the past Connor you you know that he doesn’t typically throw that type of speed unless he has to now abely Dynasty they’re really just looking for Win Slots Win Slots John asking Chad to adjust the goal because the series is coming down to this play and does he plug it it’s a right hike oh he almost plugged it it was close great effort unfortunately Chad K that wouldn’t have mattered anyways if it went in you still didn’t have enough what a series in this win but congratulations Young guns on winning the 2023 dlex season kickoff over JC Dynasty 3 to one yes and Connor it has been an honor calling this uh tournament here with you today especially this finals here and again thank you all for joining us for the 2023 disc
