i’m gonna say something about a golf club that I don’t think I’ve ever said before and that is I think this might be too cheap a Mazuno JPX Fly High Hybrid is basically the exact same price as buying a JPX hot metal iron so you can actually buy it as part of the iron set what that nets out to compared to your major companies your Ps your Titus your Tailormaids is this hybrid is essentially half price or less than hybrids from other companies i’ve had this media sample kind of kicking around in the shop for a while i fit a few people to them as the longer irons out of a JPX hot metal set and I’ve seen some really good results with actual clients and I’ve hit a few balls myself and went maybe it’s not the exact right fit for me as a player but for the price why am I not seeing very many of these out there is it that people just aren’t aware of it so I’m gonna hit a few it’s a 22 degree hybrid i’m gonna swing a little bit less crazy fast target a green that’s more like 210 or so in carry little shot there didn’t strike it perfectly maybe the tiniest bit thin in the toe very easy to get the ball in the air the ball speed’s nice again it’s not going to be a club that fits everyone the ball speed relative to the club head speed there is really really good i mean that performance-wise is a towering high shot from around that 210 number that I was kind of hoping for that one there i closed the face a tiny bit it’ll probably still catch the edge of the green fringe wouldn’t be upset with it pretty consistent ball speed didn’t jump off the planet all of a sudden kept some spin on it it It honestly sounds and feels really good when we talk about clubs that are half the price of something it’s almost always direct to consumer stuff it’s not big brand stuff like a Mazuno um and usually the trade-offs are kind of obvious yes we can get some good numbers maybe the forgiveness isn’t quite there but like they’re they’re keeping up nicely hey the sound the feel the looks maybe not quite up to it you can see an obvious difference with this one it’s a little bit less of that you’re not having to explain to your friend why you ended up with a Mazuno Hybrid let’s just say it that way you’re not having to say “Oh no hear me out this Mazuno Hybrid is actually pretty good.” This is a top company that people actually want to play and they just happen to have this club right now that for whatever reason i think they aren’t charging enough for three in a row that I would be ecstatic with absolutely ecstatic with not a perfect strike either kind of healed it a little bit thin the spin kicked up a little bit but there was a lot of ball speed so I actually ended up getting a similar distance really really nice so the first thing people are going to say is “Hey it’s cheaper for a reason it’s not adjustable it’s a bonded hoszle.” Fine that is a limitation now Mazuno will bend this for you if you want i would probably order mine a little bit flatter at a starting configuration if you want to change that later is it as easy as sticking a wrench in there of course it isn’t the majority of people that I fit into a wood a driver a hybrid they’re not messing around with that all that much we found what works really well for them they’re pretty unlikely to especially in this category be going “Oh I I really want to try this way different loft or way different face angle.” Now if it’s been configured well if it works well for you I’m not saying adjustable huzzles are overrated but maybe as a long iron replacement like a hybrid like this it might not be something you even need so sort of like that one i think I made a pretty good swing it’s probably coming in a touch upright and overdrawing the ball again I don’t generally like to blame equipment when I look at the dynamic lie yeah it’s a little bit more upright than for example like a ping hybrid you could set really flat there’ll be players that look at this and go “Hey man that sits really upright it’s not really for me that’s fine.” Most people are not hitting a draw most people if anything could benefit from a hybrid that helps them start the ball uh and offset their fade or their slice in some cases i mean it’s awfully good it’s awfully good super high uh swing speed players would find it probably eventually spins too much i’m trying to dial it back a little bit here and it is on the higher spin side but again we could mess around with different golf balls so you can get your spin down there’s different lofts of this like the player that’s hitting this shot wants it to be a little bit less spin and go a bit further might go with the lower degree there’s a 19° this thing is way way way too good for Canadian 215 bucks like it’s outrageous it’s been very consistent you guys are seeing the exact strike location you can see how consistent the ball speed is the launch and spin have changed but really only in relation to me you know making face angle changes the shaft options are a little different they’re more like iron shafts mizuno has really good options though so this media sample is a bit weird frankly it has a steel shaft in it the MMT graphite that you get you can get in this I think is probably what most people would choose no upcharge there’s some nice recoil graphite in there again no upcharge and really nice grip options and the price is just outrageously good if you appreciate our honest unbiased no marketing approach you can help support the channel in a couple of ways leave us a super thanks you can actually order just about anything golf club or shaftwise through Golf Liberty so I’m going to hit a competitor’s hybrid that does cost more than twice what that costs i am not saying this to go oh wow like this is half the price there’s no advantage this club has adjustability that that one doesn’t have there are other things that might make someone see the value in it looks feel whatever but just for a onetoone comparison of what you can get for the money let me show you what sort of your most expensive typical hybrid would do in relation to the performance we just saw same loft same length same intended spin profile so I believe we should see some pretty similar numbers [Music] very similar very similar really good strike pretty much the same kind of carry it’s probably a little bit higher ball speed than I don’t sure if we saw 146 but again I can’t say technically was a slightly faster swing so pretty equivalent on efficiency very similar ball flight there are things with this club I can do uh and make changes to that I can’t with the Mizuno the look of it address might be more my preference the sound the feel i’m not saying they’re the same but a lot of people get really discouraged with golf because they go I want a custom fit set of clubs that work well for me it’s going to cost me minimum two grand Canadian to get my set of irons and that’s just you know um let’s call it MSRP price every hybrid I look at is $400 or $500 it gets discouraging they go I don’t even know if I can afford to have clubs that work well for me it’s nice to see that someone I don’t know how they’re doing it is sort of maintaining a a group of clubs this JPX this Hot Metal line and these hybrids that I think will make custom sets not from direct to consumer company a little bit more accessible just a nice one overall again not a perfect strike and this company does a really good job with dealing with mits as well pretty consistent spin ball speed didn’t drop that much we get a pretty similar carry got two really good options here now let me just say I’m not going to hit a million balls because I like to be super specific about strikes and club head speeds and make sure we’re comparing things as closely as we can this Mazuno hybrid has its limitations the lack of adjustability from a fitting standpoint can be a real problem with certain players it can be like “Listen we need to make certain adjustments through the hoszle or you’re working on your swing you got to start here we’re going to move it here in 6 months that can be an an elimination for someone where this just doesn’t make sense what I’m seeing is that I don’t think enough people are considering it i think they’re dismissing it really quickly they don’t really know about it i don’t know what the deal is if you are a super high spin player yeah it’s probably not going to be for you if you do need something to sit a certain way or you need the adjustability it might not be for you um but I would give it a shot if you can go somewhere and test it side by side I think you’d be shocked how good it holds up against something that is twice the price or more

  1. You can also buy something 1-2 years old for the same price. Let's not act like hybrids change so much we need brand new every year. I'm a scratch player, make $300k per year, and spent under $1k on my entire set, all custom built

  2. Rogue st max. Pretty much the same. They have the same face. Miz looks better but Callaway has the bigger toe.

  3. Hybrids are like fairway woods, the technology hasn't changed a ton. That's why you see people in general playing fairway woods that are 3 to 10 years old.

  4. One of the only hybrids for sale in the US market with a steel shaft. I play my Honma TR21 5 hybrid with a Modus 105 and love it.

  5. I've got two of them. Awesome clubs, lots of no upcharge custom options as well. Play mine with steel iron shafts that match my iron set. Swing my 7 iron 90+ mph and have no issues with spin/ballooning shots.

  6. I personally think that Mizuno in 2023 mightve been one of the best all around companies and nobody talked about them. All the 923 irons. S23 wedges are insanely good. ST-230 drivers are underrated. ST-G fairways are exceptional.

  7. Thanks Matt
They should make an entire set (5-GW) of these available
as they outperform most Game improvement sets out there today.
    They are fantastic

  8. It's always surprising that more hybrids aren't sold with iron sets, with matching shafts, and gapped accordingly.

  9. I have a Mizuno utility 4 iron, 22 degree hybrid, and a 7 wood that I rotate in and out of my bag. The reason is they are great clubs and affordable.

As for why, when people think of Mizuno they think irons. It just takes time to break that stigma. BTW, I also have Mizuno irons. As for my woods, I use Ping and the only reason why is they had better numbers in my fitting.

  10. I like that they are positioned as a 1:1 replacement for a long iron, steel shaft and all. I don't currently play one, but would not hesitate to.

  11. I bought a Callaway 21 deg utility wood, in my spec, off Ebay for half the UK new price! It supposedly was used for 2 x 9 holes, it did not have a single mark on it! I’m considering a 4 or 5 hybrid to swap with long irons course/condition dependent, I will have to give the Mizuno a look as my go to would have been Ping!

  12. Hi Matt. How do you feel about grips that have the lower alignment texture like Lamkin Calibrate and Golf Pride Align? I feel liek it should be on every set of clubs ever made they are that useful.

  13. Good video! Unfortunately I can’t find this anywhere to purchase as a stand alone club. Only part of the sets.

  14. Mizuno is just not the name brand like Callaway Taylormade Titleist etc. but they make great quality products. It's just that average players are unaware of it. Great vid Matt
