Sam Burns talks with the press after the final round at Oakmont

how difficult was it yeah it was tough i mean the conditions were extremely difficult um and period I didn’t have my best stuff today and uh yeah it was really difficult can you go through what you saw yeah so that fairway obviously slopes left to right um and that’s kind of the low part of the fairway there um you know when I walked into it clearly could see water coming up um and took practice swings and it’s just you know water splashing every single time um called a rules official over they disagreed i looked at it again i thought maybe I should get a second opinion um that rules official also disagreed um so at the end of the day I mean you know it’s not up to me it’s up to the rules official and that’s kind of that you said you didn’t have it it seemed like it did happen until the delay was it mentally hard to get back in there or anything not really um I mean it’s a tough golf course and um I didn’t have my best stuff and clearly it showed what did you do during the delay to try to stay locked in uh grabbed a little food um didn’t seem that long of a delay i mean by the time we got back here and uh then back out to the range so it wasn’t wasn’t too bad sam how do you reset yourself you asked for a ruling twice we all saw it how do you prepare then to hit that shot when you’re kind of Yeah i mean for you know at that point Travis and I said “Look let’s focus on the shot try to execute.” Um and and I did the best I could i was 100% locked in on what I was trying to do and uh ultimately um you know it felt like the water just kind of got in the way and uh went left and it is what it is fairway on 12 was that another that just like a weird similar thing um but look it’s part of it um everybody’s got to deal with it and um you know I’m extremely proud of the way I fought out there today and uh overall it was a great week um and it’s cool to have my son here on Father’s Day and uh it was a blast unfortunately I was yeah i mean I’m sure breaks but did you feel like nothing you couldn’t catch yeah I mean you know it’s part of it i was in a divot on 11 as well um it’s part of it you know it happens you play enough golf uh you know you hit it in divots and you know everybody does so you seem emotionally to be okay yeah i mean look you know I went out there and gave it the best I had and golf’s a hard game um especially on this golf course and you know at the end of the day I can hold my head high leaving thanks for the time Sam all right thanks guys we got JJ

  1. What a CLASS act by Sam Burns. This man has so many positive vibes headed his way. Sam Burns you will get redemption in the next few years. I'm calling it -11 under, PGA Championship 2027 in Frisco Texas at the brand new Fields Ranch!!!!!! SAM BURNS FOR THE WIN!

  2. Soggy ground does not mean you get relief. The water has to be visible without exerting pressure on the ground. The following is cut and paste from the USGA rules page.

The applicable rule is Rule 16 "Relief From Abnormal Course Conditions". Then the definition for "Temporary water".

"Any temporary accumulation of water on the surface of the ground (such as puddles from rain or irrigation or an overflow from a body of water) that:

Is not in a penalty area, and

Can be seen before or after the player takes a stance (without pressing down excessively with their feet).

It is not enough for the ground to be merely wet, muddy or soft or for the water to be momentarily visible as the player steps on the ground; an accumulation of water must remain present either before or after the stance is taken."

The water was not visible without pressure on the ground. Therefore no relief.

  3. Hats off to JJ, what a round. Brutal course, and weather conditions didnt help. I understand the USGA wants to test the talent of these Pros. Its the US Open, they dont wanna have scores 20 under. I think they got the story they wanted with JJ winning. Great drive on 17 and an amazing putt on 18. 5 guys at +1 going into the final few holes. Made for a great finish. Weather was a huge factor, USGA even offered refunds to fans. USGA failed letting play to resume. Course was drenched, slowed the greens down to a 11 on the stimp meter. Pace of play at 6hrs, people complain about pace of play. Theres even some punk kid on YouTube complaining about slow play. Stop looking for balls. For 10minutes, dont read the putt from every angle, dont take 15 practice swings. Play ready golf, or let us play thru. Last week a group passed us on 14, saying playing thru. They ended up going straight to the club house. Who comes out for a round of golf and expects to play a round in 4 hrs on a Sunday. Its a fun day on the course. And truely wish, their group would challenge our group in a round. USGA Failed this week. Although they got the final back 9 finish in 120 years. Burns keep your head up, your awesome. JJ what a finish, much deserved. Way to go!

  4. Why did the rules officials base their decision on where his feet were, as opposed to where the ball was, where it was so much wetter?
If the rule is based on where the feet are then it needs to be changed.

  5. One of the most humble guys on tour he got fucked on that ruling and it costed him the tourney but he’ll be back around the top in a major soon

  6. Sam Burns, respect 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

  7. All the players had to play under the same conditions. Sam should have gotten relief but the officials denied it; oh well, that’s life and that’s golf, decisions don’t always go in your favor. Sam didn’t whine about it, that’s should be norm because that’s what adults do. You can’t whine and cry about it like kids do. Sam great example other players should follow.

  8. Class act. Can’t say the same for people who make a living trying to create conflict thru their questions and writing.

  9. He said it himself “I can hold my head high” – you truly can young man. Much respect from Glasgow, Scotland. 👏👏👏🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿
