[Music] let’s get into short game protocols you see me with two bands we got the short band on the golf club with the connector to my belt on my trail side you see the long band with the foot with the foot strap on my right foot now the reason for this why am I using two because I want you to recognize the importance of your levels so with this band in place it gives me heightened awareness whether or not I’m losing my dimension to the ground now that makes completely sense and you’re watching this i know you’re like “Wow that makes sense i don’t want to change my levels.” But the reality is sometimes people don’t even know they’re doing it a lot of times we see a lot of sag into these pitch shots we’ve got a little little pitch to this pin it could be a chip it could be a pitch flop shot doesn’t matter you want to have awareness of where your hula hoop is traveling so when you see this I’ll just use a club without the band for the moment set this one down i’ll come back to it in a second but you’ll see how I have a narrow stance kind of identified by my red aim stick white aim stick through the toolbox my direction to this first flag the golf balls slightly back in my stance my weight’s a little forward now if you pay really close attention to this trail leg as this little shot gets clipped and moves forward toward the target there’s not a lot of change in elevation with the legs super super important so when you put the long band on the foot strap and you start making these little swings now you’re more mindful of the radius you create how that radius can have this slightly downward attack on the ball brush the grass then have some method of slowing down in style while you watch these successful chips and pitches go toward a cup now these shots are shots where we’re trying to anticipate the landing angle and the landing angle is how the ball lands to the turf and then responds as it rolls out so this is just a stock little pitch a pitch shot by definition is a ball that flies a little bit more than it rolls or it can fly a lot more than it rolls and a chip shot is a ball that’s going to roll more than it flies but really the the behaviors and how we hit these shots very similar if I hit a chip shot it would look very much the same now notice my setup for these shots notice how I’m way closer to the golf ball than my designed lie angle so this club is mine is bent to 62° of line angle here is 90° zero would be if I set it on the ground now when you set up to hit these shots I’m going to say that I’m probably 20° more vertical than the setup so if it’s at 62 I’m up here at 82 which means the heel is coming off the ground the toe is more toward the ground and visually it’s going to look a little weird to you but that’s what it looks like the toe is down the heel is up a way more vertical event to hit these shots i’m closer to it in doing so the also the changes you’ll notice that my thumbs my wrists are higher my thumbs are more down so as I set up to hit one of these the the handle is high the ball’s a little bit back the toe is tap tap tap the heel is off the ground now managing my levels because I have this awareness i don’t want to feel my knee run into this i want to feel like I can move this club with stability until I have some mechanisms of slowing down my weight’s biased into my left side and when I look down at this from my visual perspective my point of view my handle is a little forward so when I look down I see the golf ball just within the white stick my handle a little closer to the red stick and the ball feels like it’s played a little towy because the toe is what’s going to brush the grass in a minute and here’s this little strike with a stable level as I move through this ball there’s a nice shot and I want it to go in and I pulled it a little bit but I can make that putt so those are the elements of feel for this and this is going to help you with your levels because I’ll tell you what we see a lot of we see a lot of lowering and flipping all kinds of things so if you can learn how to push the band long expect and enjoy that little bit of tension as you move through these shots with rather long legs you’re going to be way more reliable striker when you get down to the ground so the foot strap on the trail foot rail on the right side and this is just enjoy this practice now if I change clubs set that one down take the short band i’ve got it attached below the grip click that i like to click it ahead of the leg band and same thing now I’ve just got a sense of radius so as I set the club in a little toe down heel up really close to it ball back and you have latitude here you can move the ball around if you want slightly different launch conditions for different landing conditions play around with your ball location you’re welcome to do that and and be When I say play around that’s it be playful so this is a situation when my weight’s a little left my stance might be open a tick and this is toe down thumbs down high hands taking a look and the only difference is I have this little mild push tension here just mild and I want to keep that in so I’m nice and tall keeping my levels a little bit of push a little bit of thumbs down oh I need to hit that one a little harder come on my direction was good my contact was good my swing length wasn’t big enough so I can add a little bit more energy this is a lob wedge so my lob wedge isn’t launching really high because it’s crispy contact let’s hit another one nice and tall close to it push push push as far as mild band tension then I’m going to keep that mild band tension nothing’s flipping scooping or helping i always tell my students physics over feelings let’s move this club in this vertical circle pretty simply a little bit back and up and a little bit up and in but it feels pretty straight back and pretty straight through because I’m so close to it so aim the face tap tap tap club’s really not resting on the ground it’s a measure of my radius weights a little left keeping my levels i’ll add a bit more speed to this let the ball get respond off the face that one should be pretty good there’s a nice little chip pitch whatever you want to call it i call it a tap in so when you are working with your swing trainer one of these is key for your levels we don’t want any kind of level change if we can help it no raising and lowering the hula hoop no thank you let’s establish it let’s find our radius now with our arms and let’s learn how to move that with confidence and reliability and I want you to have fun with this now once you train with the level go ahead and pop it let it sit on the ground take one element away but now I know it’s not there but I want to feel like it is feel like you’ve got that that long trail leg that’s reliable handle a little bit forward wait a little bit forward let the ball get gathered up collected ball’s going to respond and go there’s a nice little chip a little tap in or chippy pitch now if I was going to hit this farther guess what I need i just need more energy i just need more energy so if I was to fly it into the cup there we go somebody over the hill must have done something pretty cool maybe you heard that in my microphone i love hearing that in a golf course by the way and so this little event said I was going to try to fly it in the cup this is more swing length being very conscious of my levels the ball is inspired to go farther it flew darn near to the cup it would have rolled out farther and all that was was a graduated swing length that again physics over feelings the club made the ball respond there’s an angle of attack down into the ball brushing the grass and then pay particular attention to this i’m going to in fact flip the roll over here a little bit i’m going to take this i’m going to roll it to my lead side because I want you to see it from a different perspective i’m going to take put this here connect it to the rail because I want you to be able to see the sensation of how even in these guys like I’m stretching that band i’m not sinking when I have the band down there it’s really imperative that you understand that through the strike I’m not getting shorter in fact I’m getting taller so here’s me nice and tall close to the ball thumbs down ball back tap tap tap as I hit this little shot pay close attention to the squatchy on my ball cap that little button up there is a squatchy as I move this club back and threw a ball I did not keep my head down i can assure you that ball almost went in my head moved up and away from the target line as I maintained my elevation and I got taller i always say when the club’s going down you’re standing up and I know that’s very counterintuitive to the people that feel they have to keep their head down and do a bunch of this business but trust me if you look at that little collection of golf balls other than the one that’s about 8 feet short the rest are tapins and I want that for you so cozy up to the golf ball people this is such an amazing training weapon around the greens you have the sense of radius and push if you want more challenge lower it down an inch or so if you want a little softer move it a little closer to the grip you’ve got the ability to kind of manage your levels by feeling the awareness of the band kind of tugging on the belt and resisting that and then as I work through this common little chippy pit shot I’m close to the ball the sensation is sort of a straight back straight through as I collect this ball standing up go in just go in i’ll miss to the left a little bit so a great way for you to develop your pitching understanding your levels understanding this radius of push and how to let the ball respond off the face physics over feelings i tell you what I want you to get lost in loving this around the greens set up an aim stick put on your put on your swing trainer with pride and just be amazing at clipping these shots that people get super nervous about and if you want it to go a little farther fine you can do that or if you want to move ball location a little more forward so that the launch angle’s changed a little bit you can do that too now remember we’re cozied up to it what was at 62 or three is now at 80 or 82 or three toe down heel up ball played a little bit more toward the toe ball’s a little bit more forward i’m keeping my levels keeping my radius keeping my confidence and that ball is another tap in so your swing trainer this is going to change your game love this around the greens i do and I think you will too so interesting POV i’ve got this band for levels so I don’t lose the level i’ve got the tension sensation of keeping my legs comfortably long and I’ve got the push pressure of how I want my arms to feel along the sensation of all deviation thumbs down now notice how close I am to the ball a normal shot I’d be back here and my club plays at about a 62 degree line angle that’s my lob wedge but when I stand up to it with these shots I’m way closer to a towe down more in the 80s low 80s so now you can see the balls back on the white stick the handle is light slightly forward on the red stick and my weight’s a little forward to down i’ve got my pressures in place let me clip a little shot there’s a nice little shot going toward the pin
