Kelly breaks down the first-round leaderboard at this year’s U.S. Open, where JJ Spaun sits on top after firing a 66. But is this déjà vu? Back in 2016 at Oakmont, Andrew Landry did the same—only to fade later in the tournament. Will Spaun stay hot or fall into the same trap?

so after one round of the 2025 US Open the question begs is JJ Spawn going to be another Andrew Landry or is he going to find a way to win his first major championship so just like in 2016 the last time the US Open was played at Oakmont when Andrew Landry who had come off the web.com tour at that time it’s now the Cornfairy Tour had played a few other mini tours first US Open appearance went out and shut 66 at Oakmont the lowest opening round in a major championship at Oakmont sure enough what happened today jj Spawn no bogeies on his card shoots 66 has the lead after the first round of the 125th US Open now the case of Landry he hung around for a while and actually was within four shots of the lead going into the final round ended up in a tie for 15th so he really really put on a good show over the four rounds he ended up winning a couple of times on the PJ tour he’s now playing on the cornfairy tour and just trying to keep his career going jj Spawn well if you remember he lost to Roy Moy in a playoff at the players championship this year and he’s really had an excellent 2025 season so it’s going to be fun to watch and see how JJ Spine holds up with the lead after the first round he has um you know some guys who are on his heels but not not any major names you do have Brooks Kepka is there for sure but uh some of the guys shot higher scores Sheffler and Rory uh plus uh what three and plus four so they are ways back but hey long long ways to go let’s see JJ Spawn nine years later another Andrew Landry or is JJ Spawn going to be raising that trophy on Sunday so much golf to be played
