Just an Average Golfer giving unbiased opinions on all things golf, product tests, Golf travel vlogs and golf news!

welcome back to the channel and a really interesting video because it’s a question that I ask pretty much more than any other and that is what is the difference between a mini driver and a standard driver both in terms of length of shaft and also Loft so got a really interesting experiment we’ve got exactly the same shaft it’s a Denali 60 G stiff shaft one is 45 and 3/4 that’s a ful length shaft that you would normally find in a standard driver head and then we’ve then got the 2-in that you find in the mini driver and we’re basically going to switch these all around so different shafts into different driver heads and let’s see what really is the difference between a mini driver and a standard driver so before we go any further let’s just clarify the Loft on these two drivers I’m going to use a standard 10 1/2 degree head it’s in the max driver it’s the AI smoke the Paradigm AI smoke and in the mini driver it’s 13 1 12° now I’ve been an advocate for long enough that many average golfers should be choosing more Loft off the T it’s always a great help and the shorter shaft but I am starting to question myself now is that actually factually correct so it’s over to trackman and uh give us some important data and just see what is actually happening with these two driver heads whilst I Look to set this up on track man maybe you should go down in the comment section below and tell me what your personal findings are have you tried a mini driver have you tried a shorter shaft or do you indeed use a bit more Loft um well I’m going to find out very very soon right I think yeah so outright not too bad uh 228 carry launching 17.8 we got smash Factor 1.48 so our club head speed ball speed ratio is really good spin is decent it’s launching really high and that’s something that the um well a 10 and 1/2 degree Max head is looking to do is going to help with launch so perhaps a little bit higher than expected that 230 carry of my 93 Club head speed is likely to be where it’s going to be at so I’ll hit a few more balls with this but the more interesting point right now and I say with this this is the 10 1/2 Dee head with the ful length shating I’m really more interested on dispersion as well as that carry distance today’s video was filmed at Chester and Northwest Golf [Music] Academy right first set of numbers collected uh Club head speed averaging 92.3 that’s where I’m at realistically out on the golf course that’s what I’m trying to maintain here on trackman so just a 222 carry launching 16.1 which is as I say relatively High you’d probably look to tweak that a bit 2691 spin 96 Peak height smash Factory shown as 14 7 so that’s again a real good ratio between ball speed and Club head speed meaning the club is very efficient in my hands but the interesting bit is this that’s what we’re looking at down range if I throw up now the um dispersion we’ve got five balls that I would say are find in the Fairway and we’ve got two that are leaked out right but overall the control element five out of seven drives in play is okay I’m not liking these two but again that’s a lot to do with my swing characteristics rather than the CL so I’m going to switch up now and I’m going to go right to the opposite end of the scale I’m going to go to the 13 1/ 12° head with the shorter shaft so worth pointing out this stage don’t forget 13 1/2 Dee head exactly the same weight of shaft but 2 in shorter uh weight and flex so it’s going to be really interesting and obviously the size of head is I think is it 300 CC head that they’ve got in the mini driver as opposed to 460 so a real big difference and uh be interesting to see what what’s next huh what start with the mini driver 220 carry straight down the middle 16 laun 25 spin a smash Factor at 1.49 that’s already well it’s not surprising in many ways it’s what I’m expecting to see I just want to see how we can maintain this accuracy and whether or not we’re going to see a drop off in bard ball speeds but the first ball is already a clear indicators just to how efficient the mini driver could well be right first thing for me to mention from a personal level is that as soon as I stood over the mini driver with the shest shaft I have to admit I felt a little bit more comfortable just in terms of control and um it certainly bore out in terms of the numbers so first of all let’s go through them 222 carry which I think was be on screen for you now I think that was identical to what we achieved with the standard Driver full length shaft 14 and 1 half launch slightly lower Club head speed again for memory remained pretty consistent maybe a little bit down actually with a mini driver and that shorter length of shaft spin rate perfect 2675 Peak height again was lower than what we achieved with a normal driver and at efficiency of 1.49 just shows you just how good this thing is working in relationship to my club head speed that indication is obvious often to me something that suggests I’m finding the middle of the face a little bit more with the shorter shaft um what that dispersion looks like is essentially there’s a spread we’re in a driver at the end of the day this is a 200 yard uh 220 yard Club but we found a fairway with every single shot I would say what is that five are pretty much Center down the Fairway and we’ve got two just a little bit down the left but overall I think first of all a lot of control gained and no loss for me in that distance Stakes which is quite a surprise often to many we got one final bit I want to add into this equation and what I want to try is the shorter shaft but with the 10 1/2 degree head on and let’s just see what happens can we gain control but add some distance so just to confirm now we got a 43.75 shaft going into the 10 1/2 Dee head and uh it’s a test that I want to know the answers uh to this equation probably as much as some of you do and as I said in the earlier part if you’ve tried this equation if you’re on a shorter shaft with your normal driver then uh let me know a lot of people are asking me the question about the ability to rather than cut down a driver why can you not just choke down on it and I think that’s perhaps another video that I’d like to see what actually happens what is the difference between choking down on driver or using a shorter shaft so that’s another one for another day for now 10 and 1/2 Dee head shorter shaft that’s see what happens should we go for it yeah right let’s stick around for first ball reaction first thing prefer the further shorter shaft and that looks good at 460 head 136 ball speed right down the middle 227 carry which I think is possibly the longest carry of the day on any setup we’ve had so far and it’s right down the middle we’ll carry on it in some more could this be the ultimate combination wow we’ve got a combination on our hands here still maintaining the club head speed around 92.6 that time and a 230 carry and uh pretty much sense of stripe it’s allowing me to be feel like I’m quite aggressive with the swing plenty of confidence and that bigger head oddly enough is providing that confidence attached to that shorter shaft I really am quite surprised that’s now the fourth ball hit and the numbers are really really interesting a couple more and then uh big reveal right okay so um quite surprised in many ways are the numbers that we’re looking at um and like I said a test that I’ve been wanting to do for some time and should have done it earlier but it really does tell a tale for me uh let’s go with the numbers straight away like we did with the previous sets 228 carry again I’m working on memory but we’re 6 yards extra we were 222 with the other 169 launch good launch number um again we’ve got this 149 smash Factor so what we’ve done using the shorter shaft in my opinion it suggests that we’ve maintained a control finding the center of the club face is what I mean by that so our club head speed which again has remained very consistent whichever shaft I’ve had had in hand is not really altered so a 92 Club head speed a 137 ball speed is incredibly efficient but the interesting bit for me was that we’ve M we we’ve managed to get a spin number of 2,000 RPM so not only we seen a good carry distance but that balance between Spin launch and the carry Is Res resulting in a suggested rollout total of 255 so the combination of putting all those um data parameters together has meant this is a really effective setup and one like I said that has uh come as perhaps a little bit of a surprise but um ultimately like I’ve already said I suppose I’m sort of going trying to sort of process this as I’m talking to you it’s definitely proven to me that shorter shaft in Drive ahead is without doubt the way most average golfers should be looking to go so if you get the opportunity to try at a custom fit then please give it a go and don’t just be guided by the two or three shots that you might hit out the screws have a look at the consistency number what are you actually achieving in terms of that dispersion control and how much you’re giving up by using that shorter shaft and in this case we’ve not actually gave up anything we’ve gained and we’ve gained considerable amounts just by ensuring that we’re finding the center of the club face more often so I hope you enjoyed that one another interesting experiment indoors here at Chester and North Wales Golf Academy it’s an incredible facility it’s absolutely pain down outside and how good is this to get you this kind of information every week and uh it’s these kind of videos I’ll be looking at like I said choking down on driver as opposed to the shorter shaft maybe an experiment uh for the coming weeks as ever thanks for watching and I’ll see you all soon

  1. There is obviously going to be reluctance on the part of manufacturers and their sponsored players to admit this. Distance has, wrongly, been the most effective selling parameter in recent years. You are correct to highlight this and hopefully there will be some intelligent players who will take note. Well done Andy 👍

  2. Hi, the swing weight will be significantly lighter with the shorter shaft in driver, did you feel any noticeable difference?

  3. Thank you, it was very interesting and intriguing video. I was wondering if you cut from the butt of a regular length shaft to 2 inches short, would it be more stiffer? Please kindly share your thoughts. Highly appreciate it.

  4. Yep, I also got a lot better with my driver when I shortened it from 45.5 to 44.5. I bought some aftermarket head weights to compensate for the swing weight change when I cut the shaft down. Switching to DRI-TAC light grip from a standard grip helped compensate for the swing weight change, too. I haven't noticed any difference in distance, but I definitely hit the mini-drivers shorter than my normal driver.

  5. Bought a cheap shaft as a test . Had it cut down an inch (44.75”) and installed it on a Ping G425. Big difference. Very easy to hit and just as long, maybe slightly longer.
But be careful. You’re changing both the swing weight and the lie angle of the Club.

  6. This is quite amazing results, I like the larger head with the shorter shaft, never tried it, but may take my Black Ops 10.5 degree driver and get a shorter shaft to try out.

  7. Thanks Andy. Would be useful to know how tall you are. I’m 6’1” and have cut my driver to 44.5” with good effect. Still got the Mini driver in the bag as a back up or fairway wood.

What length driver did you end up with?

  8. I,m 58 getting back into golf, with an average swing speed but no consistency with my old Nike 10.5 degree Ignite driver, which pings so loud it aggravates my tinnitus 😂. I went for a fitting, 9 degree reg shaft, normal length, Ping 10k max, when I hit it well a 250 yd rocket, but still too many wayward shots that would kill me on my course. At the “American” fitting there was little support/provision to experiment with shorter stock shafts. I decided to postpone any investment and keep taking lessons. What do I have in the bag now? A free old ladies Taylormade burner. It is shorter, high loft (no idea), I hit it 200 yard on the fairway 90% of time. It’s not a permanent fix but I will take a look at shorter when I invest £500+ on my new driver, if they don’t explore this I will walk away. You can’t beat booming it miles down the middle but nothing kills your score like lost balls and out of bounds!

  9. Been using a 12 deg driver with a 3 wood shaft for a few years now, Keeping it on the fairway has improved my game no end…

  10. I play a Ping G400 Max driver (9 degrees) w/ a stiff shaft cut down by 1” to 44.75”. I find the shorter shaft gives me a little better control (tighter dispersion) over the standard 45.75” shaft length. I’ve adjusted the loft to 10 degrees.

  11. I’ve tried using shorter driver shafts and it’s interesting. One round a gem the next a mud rock. The issue is swing weights. I tend to have to lower my hands for straighter ball flight and even then I have a tendency to slice my tee shots. The pros have the luxury of having great club techs apply liquid weight in the heads in the right places for optimal performance. These applications are very hard to get from a fitter who’s not experienced in this process. Any thoughts on this Andy?

  12. I use two full size drivers same make and model one at 10.5*/ 45.5 and a 2nd at 13*/ 44. The 10.5 goes 250 and the 13 goes 230. I love both. I use the 2nd driver as a replacement for my 3W/ 4W. More accuracy and distance. I have never felt comfortable with a FW on the tee and particularly off the deck. So it's an easy swap because I wasn't using a FW of the deck anyway. Very happy!

  13. I cut my current driver down 3/4 inch ( I’m 6 foot tall ) mostly because I fight a left miss and was searching for a way to calm it down a bit. I liked it so much I had my 4&7 fairways and my 4&5 hybrids cut down as well.
No magic bullets in golf but I’ve found that my bad left miss has calmed down quite a lot.

  14. I have tried shorter shaft and standard length in most combinations with little success. The only thing that seems to make a significant is a lighter head shaft combination.

  15. Hi Andy and thanks for this…before I subscribe to your channel, 2 questions…1 – do you ever reply to comments?…2 – I have a standard length shaft in my Stealth 2 Driver and choke down the grip about 2.5 inches…surely this has the same effect?

  16. Hi Andy, great video!

I played a 2 wood, aka mini driver, for many years. I discovered my sweet spot was a 2 wood with a 45 inch shaft. Long and very accurate. The smaller head had less drag than the big boulbous heads of 460 cc’s.

If i wanted to ruin a round of golf, i put in the big driver with a long shaft.

My average with the 2 wood was around 285 -289. Sneaky long they said.

And choking down a wee bit on it for the 2nd shot on a par 5 was near or very close to the green.

    Thanks for your great work!

PS. What camera are you using for these wonderful videos? 👍

  17. I’m using a 44” shaft and a driver head with 12.75 degrees. I have a lot more consistency and distance as a result of that control. The swing weight is C9, which helps me as a senior golfer. Thanks to Golf Galaxy for this setup and help.

  18. Right after watching this I (50s, golfing < 2 yrs, 22 H.I.) ordered a 43" shaft from Callaway pre-owned to replace my stock AI Smoke 44.75" shaft. It arrived today; I tested side-by-side in the simulator and then took out on the course. Results exactly consistent with yours — two-thirds reduction in lateral dispersion with no impact on distance (and slightly tighter distance dispersion). On the course the ball flew straighter and didn't balloon, reflecting the lower spin numbers I saw in the sim. I also hit several drives to record distances, thanks to a more confident swing and center strikes.

I'm convinced, and am keeping the short shaft! Thanks for putting this test together, it was super helpful.

  19. I’m pretty certain Andy did a similar video a few years ago using GBB B21 and a 44 inch shaft. He was hitting bombs with that one too.

  20. Andy . The swing weight is going to be a whole lot lighter with a shaft that’s 2 inch shorter and over all club weight with be less to , so in theory you would swing it faster ..!

  21. That is why m 13 degree 3w 43.5" out performs my 10.5 driver 45". Thanks for the video.

  22. Titleist has been saying the same thing for years….play the longest shaft which allows you to hit the ball in the middle of the face. For most amateurs it’s not 45” plus….but down around 43” ish.

  23. I’m sold. Kept hitting my 10.5 MAVRIK with Evenflow Tiptide 45”, 5.5 R, 50g on the heel. Switched to a 43”, 65g, R flex Tensei blue fairway wood shaft. Played first round, found center of the face, hit 85% of the fairways & gained 20-30 yards average according to Shot Scope tags.

  24. Stock Driver shafts arent what tour pros ot good players use, average shaft length on tour 44 inches. Longer shafts are used to generate club head speed for advertising etc. i play 44 in my PXG 7.5 driver i do have a longer 46 as well which i use on wider courses and bag a mini driver also with that

  25. Just cut my older spare shaft down to 44.5 as an experiment, as have been struggling with dispersion recently. Instantly gained meters and accuracy. Don't know why this isn't the standard length sold. Haven't talked to anyone who hasn't seen benefits.

  26. I bought a cleveland launcher XL super loft….16 degrees ,and made 7:49 par on 16 of the 18 holes by hitting every fairway, missed many birdie putts

  27. Every golfer should play a driver no longer than 44 inches.
The a reason the pro's play shorter shafts.
The 46 inch shaft is nothing more than a ridiculous sales ploy.

I took my 3 wood shaft today and put it my driver, nothing short of a miracle fix😊
Straighter, longer, didn't miss a fairway.

  28. I am a 3 year new mid 60’s golfer. My “fairway finder” is a Taylormade Miscela driver. It’s 40-42” and a 14 degree loft.

I actually hit my driver ok tho. 46” shaft and an 11 degree flat.

I plan to use the stock shaft which is 44” tomorrow just to compare the two. Currently playing the new Cleveland Hi-Bore XL.
