It’s the final day of the 125th edition of the US Open on Sunday, but who will come out on top? Sam Burns has a great chance, but will the American hold on?
Paddy Power News tipster Martin Matthews is back to deliver his last-day bets and a tidy two-ball treble. Enjoy!

Hovland primed to pounce for Major glory
It has been a strange US Open to date, with many of the game’s leading lights all packing their bags on Friday evening. With marquee names like Rory McIlroy, John Rahm, and even Scottie Scheffler (who survived the cut) struggling to make any real impact, we are left with an unexpected, albeit fascinating, leaderboard on Sunday.
Top of the tree after 54 holes is Sam Burns on -4. We then have Adam Scott and JJ Spaun one shot behind on -3, with Viktor Hovland a further two shots back on -1 under. Carlos Ortiz on Level par, as the only other player who has at least held his own against the course to date.
Others on +1 or +2 over will fancy their chances of making a run – but with 26 US Open winners all starting Sunday within four shots of the lead, history tells us that the winner should come from these five players above.
Form
Sam Burns arrived here in excellent form, having just lost out in a play-off in Canada last Sunday. He leads the field for the week in approach play and has been excellent on and around the greens and will be confident he can prevail today.
With this being uncharted waters for him, will the pressure get to him as he chases a first Major? Similarly, while JJ Spaun has already shown this year at Sawgrass that he has what it takes to compete in the big events, this is a completely new situation for him in the Majors.
While I wouldn’t completely rule out a fairytale second Major for 44-year-old Adam Scott, he is yet to produce anything of note this year. I suspect his long putter may be found wanting when it really matters.
The man I will take to get the job done is Viktor Hovland.
Hovland has been tinkering and searching for his game over the past 12 months. He showed at the Valspar earlier this year that when he gets a chance to close, he has that killer instinct.
Third in approach play this week, the Norwegian’s irons have been firing well, while the thick rough around the greens has proved an equaliser for his sometimes suspect chipping.
Hovland has served his time in Majors over the recent years, knocking on the door on several occasions, and I am happy to side with him today to get over the line.
Robert MacIntyre v Cameron Young – Cameron Young to win
Moving on to today’s two balls, I will start by taking Cameron Young over Robert McIntyre when they tee off at 6.31pm, UK time. It’s been a tough 12 months for Young; however, he seems to be getting back on track now with two top 10’s in his last four starts.
While Scotland’s McIntyre is a class act, Young has a stronger Major record and slightly better form coming in here. The pair have matched each other for the first three days but the American gets the vote.
Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen v Thriston Lawrence – Thriston Lawrence to win
Teeing off next at 6.42pm UK time, we have Thriston Lawrence and Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen. I am happy again to chance the outsider in Lawrence.
Neegaard-Petersen has a big future but is still prone to inconsistency and it is hard to know what to expect today. Lawrence showed last summer at the Open Championship that when he takes to a course, he ca stick around. He is showing that again now.
The Dane built his score on Saturday around a particularly strong day on the greens. I suspect it’s unsustainable and am happy to take the more experienced South African to get the better of him.
Adam Scott v Sam Burns – Adam Scott to win
I will finish our treble by taking Adam Scott against Sam Burns in the final pairing, when they head out at 7.15pm UK time.
While I don’t fancy either to ultimately get the job done, it is Scott I suspect who might still be in the hunt at the bitter end. The USGA have set tough pin positions today to keep scoring in check.
Finding fairways – something Scott has done more than Burns this week – will be key. Scott’s far greater experience in this situation and the Aussie gets the nod in the day’s final two-ball.
