Why no Bryson in LIV creator event, PGA Tour declines LIV request, & Golf Advice | The Shotgun Start

It’s a true whiparound Friday as this episode covers many topics, spanning from a listener’s Juuso Valimaki scouting report to a promotion for our Masters preview show going LIVE on YouTube next Tuesday night. love that He was the 16th overall pick in the 2017 entry draft At only 26 years old he found himself with a lower body injury Cannot recall if it was a broken leg or knee his being uh but in waiverss was purely an exercise and shuffling him to their minor league team until he recovers as at the same time he can be he became injured their team had three top defenseman return to the lineup they were forced to shuffle him downward to remain compliant with the salary cap oh Utah’s just just messing with the cap trying to get extra deadline space I don’t know I might have had the I might have had the timelight off but I it seemed like he got set down and then tore his ACL after he got sent down Well that’s that’s what it seems like This astute listener would like you to know he’s doing just I’m jumping to book Freddy and Me by Trip uh Bowden about the uh legendary Augusta National uh Caddyy Master Freddy Bennett It’s a it’s a it’s a book I came highly recommended I wouldn’t I wouldn’t necessarily pass that along Um it’s good though some insights uh just for writing Just that’s just what Why are you doing that to Trip it’s a good I mean it’s a good out there trying to trying to make books and I you know the writing wasn’t different strokes for different folks that’s all it’s nothing you know some people like different things but it’s just it’s our master’s fact of the day go buy it you’ll get more facts Freddy and me uh and so Freddy takes them all around all 18 holes talking it’s just this awesome this is a good chapter this is the one I flagged as you can see the one ah so where where do you get those little flags is Is that how you mark up a book yeah I don’t want to I don’t want to get myself in trouble When I was a parallegal when I was 20 This is now 20 years ago I’ve gotten uh some angry emails in the past about that I’ve I’ve admitted that I’ve used the foot wedge on numerous occasions as a caddy Yeah And people are are I raid about it Like people are mad that I question your character questioning my character and it’s like you know what when you’re just out there watching somebody hacking around for 95 I mean this this is the you got to just you got to help them out sometimes It’s a sad Do you ever wonder or Yeah it doesn’t It’s not the club championship It’s a guy that’s going to shoot 95 or 95 whether you kick it or not Well I also want I always wonder like as someone who cattied do you ever wonder like when you have a caddy why like you have such great lies all day does a thought ever go in through your head like how this happens let me ask you this Did you ever kick one 20 yards oh yeah Yeah that’s a big boot I picked one up and chucked it once God cuz I knew they couldn’t see It was like a Monday outing I mean yeah Yeah sure Those those are those are total wild west out there Monday scrambles I was running around I was chasing I was just running around and I was just throwing balls left and right just trying to survive I’m just working on my off day trying to get by those Monday outings man That was like those players one round of the year usually right a lot of times or you have a cart bag A lot of those people in those outings though One time I got h I got hit by a ball Uhhuh standing directly behind the player at a Monday outing I’ll never forget it What happened they did it burrow in and pop back shot It was a driver and she missed she missed the ball hit the opposite like the the interior side of like the feral of where the driver head connected So like imagine like the inside of the shaft Yes Yes and show and just went straight back and hit me in the ankle I’m gonna need Bryson the physicist to explain how this is mindboggling I did I was standing somewhere where I never conceived possible getting hit by a ball and I got hit by a ball Yeah Monday outings tough Those could be tough Um that’s your master fact of the day always the prayer of the Monday outing was it’s always about who sends the Monday outing off and making sure that they handled communication about tipping correctly that yeah they had to emphasize that there was that the tip was expected that the base rate was covered but you need to tip because that’s what made Monday outings the four four some cart chase worth getting in there on a Monday And then of course there was sort of a a a cast system of outings right like you kind of knew you’d get players and guys with some loot Then you know like I mean the charity ones there were some like the so and so foundation I don’t know it might not be but the Morgan Stanley Monday outing maybe you’d be in good shape for that one Uh yeah then there’s all sorts of different different ordering of the Monday out I always worked the the bag room on Monday outings during the setup and then I would go out during the outing Chase every time Four on a card Daddy Yeah it’s awful Occasionally there’d be the the the carry situation Very rarely though Yeah we I don’t think they would even like they would strongly discourage that on Mondays But what I always do I talk with the caddy master be like I need to be able to be moved around on the on the sheet And I would just scope out good bags Yeah Like is this a good golf bag in 10 years Yeah And that’s where I’m going Yeah Yeah Cuz the golf bags that come in on those Monday outings are wild Wild wild Crazy stuff Some crazy stuff Falling apart Why do you even bring this bag why Why are you even bringing this set of clubs it’s like they got out of a casket 20 years that’s just been sitting in the basement for like It’s just ridiculous some of those Um Yeah All right Uh that’s your master’s fact of the day Little little boot on 11 That does make sense You can kind of get up and over the hill I just want people to be aware You have to be aware when you have a caddy when you appear at a ball that they were foretting on Just just realize sometimes that the life’s really good and it just didn’t happen Like have I looked at my caddy and he and I looked at him I go “Huh that’s where it ended up did it?” He like gave me this ry smile I was like “Well you did you did your you did your job here.” Uh I think that’s risky at Augusta but maybe not I don’t know I guess on 11 Yeah you got guys 11 Nobody can see anything Yeah you’re right You’re right Anyways that’s the old trick apparently per per the best when you recommend somebody’s like I can’t believe how far this one went Don’t think you can do that The masters might might be under the watchful eye of I love that they’re they’re you know they’re tracking every range shot now a lot of lot of hubbhub about this PJ how how do you use how do you deploy this as a as a as a an gambling ace what are you going to be doing with the every shot on the range Well I’m most I I I I’m I’m most excited for our game within the game between Bernie and Brian Campbell Who can push it out there we’re going to get this is going to get aggregated God this is essentially prisoners right and then un you know shackled from doing anything And and I get it They were paid exorbitant sums in the same way you might you know that that’s what the money’s for And so I got one from an anonymous listener This came via text Is it about if you suspect your caddy’s kicking golf balls down there no there’s a lot of lot of response to chip back question and handicaps and things like that A lot of response just to my messages and texts Yes a lot of blowback on that Um here’s one around chipback Uh I recently participated in an industry gettogether that features an annual golf tournament consisting of nine-hole best matches played between two man teams You could either invite a plus one as your partner or get randomly paired I’m a nine handicap My 60-year-old partner was about the same But it’s a no strokes given tournament Is it scummy that our opponent a mid-30s plus two brought in a partner a plus six former KFT player or that they didn’t even offer to let us play from the middle TE’s i mean that is overcorrecting from your from from the whole situ right i mean you you have some complaints about it Like if you’re a 60s9 and you’re going against a plus two and a KFT player that sounds like that industry needs to get some guard rails and regulation up on it you know very much uh ridiculous So yes that that was a quick listener uh listener question Let me get one more This is pretty funny So friend of friend of the program uh in the heartland of America Oh that friend you know maybe sent you some bobbleheads recently I I’ve been associated with that Uh so you know I’ll tell you what great institutions in the heartland I was looking at my bobbleheads and four of the five are in the Masters Love that Should I bring them ask not fought since I lost a split decision to my next door neighbor in fourth grade I’m a loyal listener and felt compelled to ask a question after hearing you talk about unusual golf course and names during your February 20th podcast When I heard Little Bit of Heaven Golf Club mentioned it triggered a lasting memory So go find this email This was great Guy sent us he’s got like an index of all the like interesting names Little bit of heaven golf I love that name Triggered a lasting memory and subsequent question I was uh I’ll leave the company out of it marketing manager when the company inked a deal in 1997 to build the new golf course and become the title sponsor of the former uh Quad Cities Open So I guess you do know the company When working with the designers of TPC Deer Run we came to realize the property had an amazing history an archaeological sites that dated back 5,000 years had been home to an internationally recognized Arabian horse farm and was owned by direct descendants of John Deere the man who famously invented the world’s first self-scouring plow We decided it would be great to name the holes and tell these stories on each tea box 18 stories are a lot so we decided it would be nice to weave in some of our local history As I’m sure you know one of the most amazing stories in golf is Jack Fleck beating Ben Hogan to play off the 1955 US Open Well Jack Fleck is one of our own He was born here and won that open while working as the golf pro for the city of Davenport one of the Quad cities We were told that Fleck never felt he got the recognition he deserved Okay May Yeah maybe he got he’s like a legendary name for like David Bee’s Goliath right i don’t know you know I don’t know We were told that that’s a preposter He’s like one of the most well-known golfer names for being one of the least accomplished golfers Yeah David beats Goliath the lump Yes Yes It’s kind of a thing Um we’re told Fleck never got the recognition he deserves so decided to preserve the story by forever naming a hole after him and retelling the amazing story We named the seventh hole quote Olympic hero and honor the seven foot putt he made to get in the playoff Olympic club But it seemed perfect Republican rolled out the whole names before the course opened and somehow Fleck got wind of our attempted tribute He sent us an angry letter saying we had no right to use his name What he knew he knew a lot about good golf course design because in fact he had designed his own course in Magazine Arkansas titled Little Bit of Heaven Golf Club So that’s your architect of in Magazine Arkansas He did not like TPC courses All right So maybe we’re back in brother in-arms He did not like TPC courses and he would never have his name associated with one Remove his name he said or there would be consequences We sadly complied He got so mad He wanted recognition but not with an association with TPC How about that i I think I’m in on on flag I’m out I’m in I’m back in Um the letter head carried this is great The letterhead demanding his name be taken off carried the little bit of heaven mast head along with his co-partner’s name So he has a little bit of heaven on his letter head The second name had been crossed out in black but you can still make it out You think it was a falling out it was Jerry Barber winner of the 1961 PGA Championship at Olympia Field A quick check confirmed that Jerry had passed away in 1994 So this is this is like five years later 1994 Three years Oh three years before we got the letter So they didn’t have new letterhead They’re just crossing it out Black Sharpie Three years It appeared that instead of getting new letter head Jack was okay just using a quick stroke and the inference to quote pay to pay no attention to the name behind the Sharpie So the question is this What should be the accepted amount of time you’re allowed to just cross through a dead partner’s name on your company letter head before investing in new stationery is three years too long yes I agree You figure it out sooner You figure it out soon Did Ed Fiori get a tribute uh he had to have right as the gripper the pool boy The grip had to have gotten one If he if he if he didn’t he should slide right into the seventh hole Um we’re we’ll have to check it out There’s There’s rumblings that we might do a uh PJ trip to the Quad Cities this
