this is quarterfinal four in my bracket to work out the best players distance iron for average swing speed mid- handicap golfers and we’ve got two of the big hitters in this test today the tailor made P790 the Mazuno JPX925 forge let’s set up the test starting some shots and work out which one of these irons is going through to the semi-final so before we start hitting shots I just want to tell you my point scoring criteria i’m going to try and make this as objective as possible by allocating as many points as possible to the Trackman data that we’re about to collect and my objective analysis of it so there’s a maximum of 10 points on offer and seven of those will be for that performance that we’ve just spoken about and the shots that you’re about to see me hit in the next few minutes there’ll then be a couple of subjective points based on the feels and sounds and the looks of these irons and then one based on the price point as they are today now at the end of this you may come up with a different answer and you may have different things that are important to you in terms of looks feels sounds and performance and that’s absolutely okay this is just designed to be a little bit of fun and to aid you with your buying decision hopefully it does do that over the next 10 to 15 minutes and I hope you enjoy seeing these two irons compared against each other right let’s start hitting some shots and see how these two irons perform oh my god first one out the gate with the Mazuno absolutely flushed it what a be feels great definitely something I remember about these last time and I also game the JPX 923 fors the previous iteration at the moment and that straight out the gate 109 of ball speed 155 of carry 5,000 of spin is good that launch height land angle with the changes I’m making to my swing are exactly where I want it to be that’s going to be hard to beat as a set of numbers it really is yep that’s a golf shot feel great i’ve just filmed the review of the quarterfinal of the Ping versus the Shrixen in this category just shortly before I do it these feel better than both of them absolutely feel better than both of them in my opinion a great strike there 108 of ball speed 156 of carry spinning at 44 a little bit on the lower side but launch height land angle all good numbers compared to again what I’m used to seeing and what I’m trying to get to with the changes to my swing there’s a golf shot oh it’s so easy so so easy just feels like I’ve get these in my hands and all of a sudden I know how to play golf 108 of ball speed 154 of carry right out of the middle feels great spinning at 49 21 of launch peak height 88 ft land angle 46 these are good yep so good that one just stayed a little bit out to the left 108 of ball speed 152 of carry spinning at 5,100 launch of 20° peak height 83 ft land angle 45 probably the worst out of the three or four I’ve hit with it so far and oh it’s just a great baby draw it’s such a good golf shot oh it’s good 108 of ball speed again out of the meat 153 of carry spinning just under 5,000 launch height land angle all really really good so good the ball flight’s great interestingly I’ve gone from being a little bit on the slower side towards the back end of the shots I was hitting with the Shrixen to now all of a sudden I’m hitting it as fast as I have done all day because I’ve got a little bit of confidence with this combination of shaft head and familiarity of feel 108 of ball speed 153 of carry spinning at 49 launching at 21 peak 85 ft land angle 46 close the face that time and we’ve got a really lovely strike on it absolutely beautiful oh look at that that is the dream 110 of ball speed baby draw 162 of carry spins a little bit low so maybe a fraction heavy on my part at 42 but look at the launch the height the land angle everything is still very very good that’s got to be good it felt great yeah what a great one to finish it’s a little bit healy but 109 a ball speed 155 of carry 164 total spinning at 51 launch 20° peak 87 ft land angle 46 remembering exactly why I love Mazuno irons feels great delivers some really good numbers straight out the gate really confidence inspiring and not taken me many shots to collect the data set tonight let’s swap over that Tailor-Made P790 and see how it compares right first shot with the P790 in terms of looks both of them down at a dress feel or look very very similar to me so there’s not a lot in it in that regard it’s going to be interesting to see how they feel now with me hitting it slightly differently to last time yeah still love it feels great deliversed unbelievable numbers this is going to be so hard to call cuz that felt amazing maybe it isn’t 113 of ball speed 1632 of carry 48 of spin highest we’ve seen tonight at 92 ft landing at 47 it’s just an unbelievable golf shot the interesting thing is I definitely think you get more feedback out of the Mazuno in terms of feel just based on that straight out the gate i wouldn’t have been able to say to you that that one was straight out the meat like it was whereas I could with the Mazuno but in terms of the numbers and how it felt and how it flew off the face hard to compare they’re so good and even that one that I’ve caught a little bit clean and a little bit pulley it’s still gone so high in the air and it’s going to be huge 113 of ball speed 162 of carry off of a slightly thin strike that still spun at 5,000 it still got to 92 feet in the air and it still landed at 47 degrees like that’s a terrible golf shot it’s so thin but it’s probably good with every other iron that we’ve hit so far that would be considered a good shot look at it 112 of ball speed 158 of carry it’s a groove thin it’s still spun at 52 the launch the height of 78 ft yes it’s low that’s as bad as I can hit this I think just outrageous absolutely outrageous 163 yds of carry 113 of ball speed again centered strike 48 of spin 20° of launch 91 ft of peak height 46° of land angle just effortless effortless ease of hitting good golf shots with it it’s just a little bit of a pull draw unfortunately on that occasion 111 of ball speed 163 of carry spinning at 4038 launch height land angle launch a little bit low on that one but height and land angle still very very good that’s lovely really really nice enjoyed that strike yeah 108 of ball speed 157 spinning at 4109 launching at 19.2 peak height 77.8 ft land angle 42.4 42.2 sorry come on couple more with this just unfortunately a big slingy draw but look at the numbers on it 109 of ball speed 158 of carry 4833 launching at 18.2 peak height 79 ft land angle 43 it’s nearly mega it’s really It’s going to be good i just would like to see a little bit more control of direction for me at the moment 110 look at that right out the middle 157 of carry 158 168.7 total 47 of spin 19° of launch 18 ft of peak height 43.4 of land angle bit of a sling draw well look at that 115 of ball speed 163 okay still spinning at 5,400 launching at 18.2 2 peak height 88 ft land angle 45° 46° even really good set of numbers from both of these irons this is going to be a tough one to call so let’s go home dissect that data and start allocating those points right before we deep dive into all that data it’s worth reminding you that we had the same stock shaft in both of these irons and the seven iron lofts of both of them are 30° so this should be a really interesting two data sets to compare now starting on the left hand side what you’ll see is that with an identical club head speed the ball speed with the Tailor-Made P790 was 2.6 mph faster which is quite a significant increase and one of the fastest I’ve tested recently for a large batch of shots as shown in that smash factor of 1.40 just to show you my strike location on the day you can see it is probably a slightly better with the Tailor-Made P790 a little bit more centered and right in that sweet spot of the face versus a slight heel bias and maybe a fraction lower with the Mizuno so that is just worth bearing in mind as we look through the rest of the data set interestingly the spin rates of both these irons were on the higher side of what I usually see but the Mazuno JPX925 Forge was higher spinning by 150 RPM on average at 4853 and one of the reasons for that will become a little bit clearer later on in the data set in the bay both ball flights seriously impressed me so it’s no surprise to see how similar both ball flights really are the Mazuno launched 0.7° higher the Tailor-Made reached 0.5 ft higher peak height and then the Mazuno landed 0.7 degrees steeper both ball flights are exactly what I’d want to see and for me they just are impossible to separate just to show you that side on view of the trajectories you can just see how clearly overlapping both of these golf clubs are when it comes to carry distance the Tailor Made P790 blew the Mazuno out of the water by 4.9 yards carrying on average at 160.2 y however the Mizuno JPX 925 Forge did stop a fraction quicker rolling out only 10.2 yards versus 11 yards with the Tailor Made now the final thing I want to show you is that shot dispersion now as a left-handed golfer what you can see is I did hit a number of shots with the Mazuno down the left hand side which could be contributing towards that little bit of extra spin because the club face would be a fraction more open and also the Tailor Made where there’s a few more pulls could be contributing to some of that distance increase that we did see and it is just worth bearing that in mind as well that leads me really nicely into the point scoring and one thing it’s worth calling out is these are two of the favorites for this bracket in my opinion so unfortunately one of them has got to go out but I think you’re going to see that both of them scored quite well now in terms of that performance I’ve given them both really high scores 6.5 for the Tailor-Made P790 and six for the Mazuno the only thing I’d like to see out the Tailor Made that stopped it scoring a perfect seven is a touch more spin in terms of the Mazuno I’d like to see a touch more spin and a little bit more ball speed out of it as well and that might have contributed to a couple of extra yards but again some of that could be down to me on the day in terms of feels and sounds I do think these are two of the best three in this bracket in terms of how they feel and how they sound and therefore I can’t split them so I’m giving them both a point because it’d be unfair to knock either of them down in terms of looks I think the P790 is definitely one of the best looking players distance irons in terms of how the blade length looks and how it looks in the bag and therefore is scoring a full point i do love the Mazuno down at a dress but I don’t think it’s got as much bag appeal as the P790 and some of the other irons that are in this bracket as well so it’s only scoring half a point in terms of price I think the price of them is almost identical when I was looking at the time of filming the video they might be like 1020 between them but they are right in the midpoint of irons in this bracket so I’ve scored that a draw as well so what that means overall is we have got a 9.5 out of 10 for the Tailor-Made P790 it’s the favorite for the bracket for a reason just edging out the Mazuno at 8.5 it is worth calling out that if the Mizuno was up against any other eye in the bracket I think it would have gone through maybe just the tightest T200 in the quarterfinals might have beaten it on the day but it has scored incredibly well so congratulations to the Tailor-Made P790 and commiserations to the Mazuno it’s a great iron should be on your test list and if it come up against most other irons in this bracket it would have scored itself a semiinal place now that does mean we’ve got our semi-final lineup complete on one side of the bracket we’ve got the battle of the value options the recently reduced in price Titus T200 after Titus announced the new T250 that will come later on this year versus the underdog the Wilson Dinap Power Forged and on this side of the bracket we’ve got the Shrixen ZXi5 versus the Tailor-Made P790 a battle of the big hitters now if you want to get notified of those two videos when they land on the channel make sure you subscribed equally if you’ve Great comparison!
Great video and looking forward to the next round. 👍👍
Wow that was a surprise Luke
Really enjoying the format
I like your unbiased reviews
Now I am considering the P790 which I never did before
When you started with the JPX 925 forged and were hitting them so well, I thought to myself, "they're going to win" BUT then come the P790s with phenomenal numbers. I know you're a bit of a Mizuno fanboy and it would have been easy for you to put them through to the semi final. However you didn't and I appreciate your non bias approach. I hope the Srixons can do themselves proud in the semi 🤞BTW, congrats on getting to over 6K subs. You deserve to get to 10K soon!
P790s look awesome, and perform really well! Might go for the in a few years when I'm buying new irons 🙂
You do seem to strike the ball consistently, I think you should be playing a combo set zxi7/5 T150/200 to see if you can really benefit from having more control in your scoring irons and leave the help to the longer irons.
