shane Lowry endured a rough start quite literally during the opening round of this year’s US Open at Oakmont where he once finished runnerup the 2019 Open champion teeing off on the back nine made the turn at four overpar after a string of early setbacks the 38-year-old opened with steady pars on holes 10 and 11 but things quickly unraveled a bogey at the 12th was followed by a costly double bogey on the par 316th he then dropped another shot on the par 418th carding a frustrating five but it was the 17th hole a short 327 yd par4 that really tested his composure lowry nearly drove the green but his second shot from the rough failed to escape cleanly and he then sent the ball long in a more thick grass behind the green visibly agitated Lowry took out his frustration on a TV microphone flinging it behind him in disgust his mood lifted briefly after producing a brilliant chip in from the Greenside Rough to save par a flash of a class that won in the Clara Jug at Royal Portrish sky Sport commentator Laura Davies weighed in on the moment there you go exactly as Wayne Riley said just awful that’s what we’ve been seeing all week they’re trying so hard to get the right contact but it’s not an exact science out there right now wayne Riley added “It actually makes me quite mad when I start peering down on these balls you end up in strange positions even on your toes it’s brutal indeed the rough at Oakmont has been a hot topic of conversation all week leading up to the tournament on Monday PGA Tour veteran Janat in Vegas called it unplayable even after maintenance crews had trimmed it good news guys they’re cutting the rough he posted on social media but still unplayable have fun alive Golf’s Phil Mickelson who is still chasing a career grand slam also chimed in sarcastically in response to a video of the grounds crew at work they’re not working they’re not cutting sh he wrote on X that despite the early struggles Lowry wasn’t down for long he produced an electrifying moment on the par 43rd hole hauling out for Eagle to claw back some momentum as the first round continued american JJ Spawn held the early lead but all eyes remained on how players like Lowry would navigate one of the toughest tests in golf
