all right golf fanatics you’ve just plugged into Golf Unity yeah the most popular golf infotainment podcast in town welcome welcome to episode 9 great to be here we’re not just uh skimming the surface today we’re going full scuba dive into the well sometimes sublime often ridiculous always captivating world of golf that’s a good way to put it let’s be honest you’re here because you live for this stuff right you’re dissecting swings in your sleep you’ve got like more opinions on club selection than maybe your own family and the Masters that’s practically a religious holiday for some folks well uh you’ve come to the right place indeed the air is buzzing with anticipation augusta National is stirring the Aelas are Well they’re getting ready for their closeup and the big question really is who’s going to be slipping on that green jacket come April 2025 exactly forget trying to piece it all together from like a million different headlines we’re going to be your Augustus Sherpas for this deep dive cutting through the noise yeah cutting through the noise bringing you the essential story lines the uh the under the radar insights the stuff that’ll have your buddies saying “Whoa how did you know that?” Consider this your backstage pass no sandbagging allowed here okay so let’s lay the groundwork first when does the action actually kick off good question you’ll want to circle Thursday April 10th right through to Sunday April 13th on your calendars and location same as always yep augusta National Golf Club in Augusta Georgia the only major played at the same course every single year that’s a key point right that tradition that course knowledge it’s huge huge it’s part of what makes it so unique you really got to know the place absolutely and uh the field itself that’s another big part of the master’s allure it’s smaller more exclusive than the other majors right how many players usually we’re expecting around 96 players who’ve earned that invitation think of it like golf’s most prestigious velvet robe situation 96 of the absolute best it’s the ultimate clash and oh yeah here’s a little extra spice for you keep an eye on the Valero Texas Open the week before ah the last chance saloon exactly if the winner isn’t already qualified boom they could snatch that last minute ticket to Augusta talk about pressure turning into the ultimate prize that would be quite the story okay format wise pretty standard stuff yeah standard 72 hole individual stroke play but then there’s the cut after 36 holes right the top 50 players and ties make it through to the weekend that Friday afternoon cut man it can be brutal oh totally brutal dreams dashed just like that and hey if we get a tie at the top after 72 holes then we get the sudden death playoff the ultimate pressure cooker as you said where does that start it kicks off on the iconic 18th hole if they’re still tied they move over to the tough 10th hole and just back and forth back and forth 18 then 10 until someone finally wins we haven’t actually seen one since uh 2017 oh yeah who was that that was Sergio Garcia finally getting his major beating Justin Rose a really memorable one wow yeah I remember that okay let’s shift gears players who’s dominating the pre-ournament buzz gotta start with Scotty Sheffller right absolutely he’s been a force at Augusta looking for potentially his third Masters win in just four years that’s that’s heading into dynasty territory he’s his record there is just ridiculous wins in 2022 2024 there’s something about his game and that course it just clicks and what’s really fascinating is this consistency even with setbacks like remember earlier this season he had that hand injury yeah i do still managed to runner her up at the Texas Children’s Houston Open that kind of resilience is well it’s pretty rare it really is resilience in a game that just seems built for Augusta and speaking of consistency his Champions Dinner menu just came out ah yes always a fun topic what’s he serving it’s Peak Shuffler cheeseburger sliders Scotty style meatball and ravioli bites apparently from his dad Papa Sheffller nice family touch totally firecracker shrimp for a bit of kick and good old Texas style chili sounds like proper comfort food after battling Augusta it really does and the main course choice between a woodfired cowboy ribeye or black and red fish plus you know classic southern sides mac and cheese jalapeno cream corn Brussels sprouts sweet potatoes sounds delicious and dessert a warm chocolate chip skillet cookie a fitting end what’s interesting though it’s apparently very similar to his 2022 menu huh really like sticking with what worked exactly it kind of suggests he’s grounded focused on what fuels him you know literally and maybe figuratively too interesting point okay who else the other massive story line year after year rory Mroy ah Rory and the quest for the career grand slam the masters that elusive final piece it’s the one isn’t it the one that puts him in that ultra rare club and look on paper he’s coming in hot two PGA Tour wins already in early 2025 right and a strong T5 finish in Houston the signs look good mostly mostly but there is a bit of a concern he’s admitted to a bothersome right elbow oh really that’s not ideal heading into Augusta no he said he’s going to get treatment focus on practice in the week leading up so yeah great form but this physical thing adds um a layer of uncertainty definitely elbow issues that’s tough for golf especially under Mast’s pressure you wonder how it might affect his swing you know coming down the stretch on Sunday exactly and his past Masters results are well a mixed bag t-22 last year missed the cut in 23 but runner up in 22 so he can do it he absolutely can contend there the talent is undeniable but can he overcome the mental hurdles and now maybe this physical one for all four rounds that’s the million-dollar question for Rory always is with him at Augusta it feels like okay let’s broaden out international players DP World Tour guys yeah now let’s look at the guys making their Masters debuts this year from the DP World Tour always exciting to see new faces take on Augusta do we got We’ve got Lorie Caner Thomas Dert Try Raasmus Hudgard Therristan Lawrence and Aaron Ry okay a solid group hungry guys wanting to make a mark it’ll be interesting seeing who adapts quickest for sure and besides the debutants there are other established DP World Tour members or affiliates in the field like uh Robert McIntyre ah Bobby Mack he’s back after a couple of years away yeah and he sounds really excited about it feels better prepared than ever apparently well he should two PGA Tour wins last year that’s massive confidence fuel heading into a major definitely he’s spoken about how those wins really boosted his belief that he can compete anywhere including Augusta and interestingly as a lefty who likes a fade yeah that works at Augusta sometimes he feels certain holes really suit that shot shape like uh the par five 13th setting of a second shot he thinks it could be an advantage interesting angle a lefty fade on 13 could definitely open things up and he made a ton of birdies 21 I think in his debut back in 2022 so he knows how to score there okay McIntyre definitely one to watch now shifting gears again uh a bit of a poignant note this year yes burnhard Langanger the two-time champion 85 and 93 an absolute legend this will be his 41st Masters appearance and his final one as a participant wow 41 that’s just incredible longevity in class it’ll be emotional watching him take that final walk a true icon absolutely end of an era stuff now sadly there’s a massive name we won’t be seeing yeah tiger that’s right the five-time champ Tiger Woods is out still recovering from that Achilles tendon surgery his absence is always felt isn’t it even when he’s not playing he’s still like the center of the golf universe somehow totally did you see his April Fools prank teasing a comeback haha yeah for a split second the internet melted down classic Tiger just shows his pull even from the sidelines it really does okay let’s talk about the uh the younger generation ludvig Oberg oh yeah Ludvig this kid is seriously exciting absolutely he’s established himself so quickly the oddsmakers even had him as the top ranked player heading into the Valero Texas Open that says a lot doesn’t it the expectations are skyhigh he’s definitely seen as a contender in pretty much every major now yeah and you know playing college golf in Texas he knows those kinds of conditions good point and didn’t he have a great Masters last year incredible debut finished runner up runner up in his first Masters wow that shows talent obviously but also serious composure for that stage exactly he didn’t seem phased at all definitely keep an eye on Oberg he looks like a future Masters champion no doubt for sure now uh for our listeners maybe across the pond there’s another angle to this Masters right ryder Cup points yes absolutely the Masters offer significant points for both the Race to Dubai rankings and crucially European Rder Cup qualification so for those European guys eyeing a spot on Luke Donald’s team a strong showing at Augusta could be huge it gives them a big leg up adds another layer of competition another storyline especially for European fans it really does that extra bit of fire and we’ve seen European players doing really well lately on both tours you wonder if that Ryder Cup ambition is partly fueling it it very well could be a big motivator okay before we wrap up the main story lines let’s touch on a couple of those unique Masters traditions and landmarks yeah the stuff that makes it well the Masters like the part three contest on Wednesday always fun light-hearted but there’s that weird Masters lore attached to it it’s a curse right no player has ever won the part three contest and the Masters itself in the same year never is it a curse coincidence superstition who knows but it’s a fun little quirk maybe the golf gods are like “Save your good shots for the real thing.” Could be and then of course you can’t talk masters without mentioning amen corner ah the legendary stretch holes 11 12 and 13 where tournaments are won and uh spectacularly lost white Dogwood Golden Bell Aelia even the names sound iconic they really do okay hey and if people want to watch all this unfold well Supers Sport will have live TV coverage plus the official Masters website masters.com usually has amazing viewing options different feeds player tracking all that good stuff you won’t miss a thing perfect so there you have it your uh comprehensive deep dive into the 2025 Masters we’ve hit the key details the big player stories those little quirky bits you’re basically ready to sound like you know what you’re talking about hopefully this gives everyone a richer sense of what to watch for at Augusta it’s shaping up to be another fantastic tournament oh absolutely we’ll be glued to it and hey remember you’ve been listening to Golf Unity the most popular golf infotainment podcast in town if you dug this uh controversial exciting deep dive planned you won’t want to miss it looking forward to it okay final thought to leave everyone with chew on this rory’s elbow sheffller’s insane consistency is this finally Rory’s year to break the Augusta curse or is Scotty just going to run away with it again let us know what you think yeah it’ be interesting to hear people’s predictions until the next deep dive golf fans keep it in the short grass
