all [Music] right everyone Welcome back to the Tea Time tribe We are a group of Florida State University alum who decided to take our group text and turn into this podcast Week in and week out we will talk all things golf from PJ tour events to our own personal experiences As always joined by Ian John Buddy Jordan’s back from his European vacation What’s up what’s up hoping he he threw out the pot a little bit over there Get some international listeners Absolutely Got got to check the analytics They have they do have a lot of signs for their golf courses and I was like kind of you know p poking my head out the window or whatever It’s all private It’s like every single course is private It’s just like behind like a gate that’s behind a hill that’s behind a mountain that’s behind like another gate probably Like you can’t even like get close to it But whoever wanted to listen and understood English I was throwing the Teton tribe around There you go We love it Represent Love to hear that All right Uh we’ll we’ll start off with RBC uh Canadian Open you know preview I guess if you will for US Open this week I think it kind of took a a back a backseat a little bit just cuz all I saw all over the place was just how thick the rough’s going to be at the US Open the green speeds Uh but we’ll talk about a little bit and then we’ll get over to the to the US Open at Oakmont Um we did have some extra golf this weekend I think it was four four holes he went Kind of feel a little little sad for Sam Burns He had that nasty lip out I think it was on the first hole right i don’t feel bad for him I don’t feel bad for him at all Dang dude You’re I mean you What is he he was number one They number one on tour for putting What What are you doing man you’re missing five footers What are you doing yeah I saw that I saw that I saw that stat too And I’ll score it I was like you don’t think of him as like a good putter He’s you know number one on the tour right now in strokes game putting I had no clue Yeah Yep Yep The minute they said that I’m like “All right he’s he’s got no chance of winning this He There’s no way he’s making this putt There’s no chance he’s winning this playoff.” Uh but it just it’s another it’s another week I I I feel like a broken record Just a broken week Another week of Scotty just not dominating If if this was Scotty number one it wouldn’t have been a playoff Number two if it was a playoff he would have finished it in the first hole Like there’s there’s no chance There’s no chance either of these guys are putting up a fight So I don’t know No I I I will say it was fun watching them hit the same almost the identical shots for four four back-to-back playoff holes other than other than the last one Fox put it to what did he put it to like 8 feet and then blew it like four feet by Hey Deron A little bit of adrenaline running I like his pace of play though I will say that both of them have fast pace of play So they make quick work of those four playoff holes Yeah this is a petition to have them be the first group out on Thursday to open up them two and find another third is just just quick It’s going to make the most random three ball um that you can find just to make sure that we’re not backed up because you know that’s that’s absolutely going to happen this weekend I’m not looking forward to six hour rounds at Oakmont especially with that rough They’re just going to be like club switching the speed on the green and everything We’ll get to that later obviously Um yeah it was kind of I mean Ian said it was just kind of a one say it was a sleepy tournament Um there were some insane scores on Thursday I think there were 261s on Thursday Um so people got off to a real fast start softer conditions It firmed up over the weekend so that scores kind of evened out Um but yeah Sam Burns from uh from the Clouds on Sunday with that 62 and getting that playoff Um a lot of big names are in contention His boy Shane Lowry Ludvig was hanging around a little bit Um so it could have been you know a top 20 guy Um coming out but another you know Shane Lowry close but not good enough finish this weekend and even said it in his Instagram post He was just like “Yep another a disappointing finish.” Yeah I felt that way about our boy nap time you know on he closed really strong on Saturday put himself in a position to win the tournament and just did nothing on Sunday Really kind of just fell flat on Sunday And I think kind of you know like you said John a sleepy tournament but I think part of that was I mean Rory right just miscut for Rory not there on the weekend Kind of crazy that he didn’t even make the cut But you talked about those pace of play and those two guys going out Just quick side story So when I was searching for my first real job I took an internship at a junior golf tour Shout out Hurricane Junior Golf Tour SJGT and pace of play was like the the big thing that we always had to like tell the kids And we had these two guys go out first like you know the 7 a.m tea time going over the ground rules before we even said anything to them These these 10 however old they were they just turned around to us They’re like you don’t got to worry about pace of play We’re going to [ __ ] run this course 10 year olds Okay And like the whole time like we you know we had this stupid like earpiece and we’re like you know group one is minus three you know just like that’s what I just it’s like ingrained in my head of like every single time someone finished the hole These kids were flying So if you’re out there listening I’m talking about you boys and I hope you’re still doing it But but yeah um back to the Tory Agree with you John A bit of a sleepy tournament for for me The the the the big headline is Rory missing missing the cut And how does that impact him going to the US Open if at all i guess we’ll see Right Speaking about Miss Cuss uh another one for Max Homo Dude is just can’t find it right now Up and down Yeah he’s he just has that turn you know he finished his T20 He’s kind of in contention and then he has a weekend like this Um but yeah back to back to Roy before we move on fully from him I think that was the worst 36 hole finish he’s ever had as a pro I think statistically or just like his finish his finish like he’s never finished worse than like it was like T136 or something was his worst and he I think he was close to to DFL this weekend like he was one over on Thursday four people Yeah Wow Which is just I mean for that kind of tournament I mean I watched a lot of his round on Friday and he didn’t do anything like too egregious It was just like he did a good drive and he get the ball short on the fairway chip it and just miss like it was just bogeies everywhere and every once in a while like a double or triple putt for a double or something like that It was just kind of it was just like he clearly by like whole seven was like gas at the jet I’m going home tonight Like it was just let’s get this over with It was kind of like me at Tatill Um let’s just get through this round Let’s get it over with because Yeah I mean this is a Yeah I don’t know This was a This was a weird weekend for him He’s won there before right yeah I think he has but this this year was at a different um course It was TPC Toronto and they played it previously I forget the name of it It’s a different different course in the area that’s been out for several years I don’t know why they switched this year I think it was like 2019 or something He holds he holds the four four round record Yeah For one of the tournaments But you guys if if you think back after after Augusta I said it could go either way that that he he could he could go into a major slump after this cuz he just doesn’t give a [ __ ] anymore He’s he’s got it He’s got his career grand slam right okay I’m I’m there I’m I’m taking a breather now I’m I’m a dad My marriage is semi not in shambles anymore What What else What else do I have to win unless he thinks that he’s going to break Nicholas’s record for majors He’s already in the top He’s already in the top atmosphere of of all time greats So with all due respect to Roy here let me be very clear If he ever comes on the pot I want to make sure there’s no episodes where I’m not giving him the respect he’s just I think he’s he’s going one of two ways He either either did this because he had to show up right missing two weeks in a row is just for a guy like his caliber you can’t you can’t do that just from a ratings perspective and on top of just wanting to get to to prep or he really is in a slump now and it’s going to be a while before we see him get back to top top four Yeah I mean he alluded it alluded to it too that his he’s not as motivated Um I think before this tournament started he was just like now that I have the grand slam you know my motivations are different coming into tournaments especially one like that where he’s just like if I win I win If I lose I lose You know it’s you we talked about it earlier it’s just kind of going through the motions But I think you know back to your point Ian about which way is it going to go I think a tournament like the US Open it’s the best of the best It’s just a daunting task This course is going to be insane He’s I think he’s going to be obviously motivated for this one you know show up want to win Um you know have the the challenge of uh winning at a course like Oakmont I mean there’s only so many chances in your career you can win a US Open at a place like that And that kind of cements your even more of your role in the history of golf Yeah I I think for for Rory for me I think he he kind of thinks he elevated himself up in that like all-time great category And I think he kind of feels that he committed to this tournament too too early not knowing what was going to happen So he probably felt a little like I wish I could go and prep for the US Open You had some of the bigger names that obviously didn’t play this week but played last week at Memorial I I think it was a little bit of a like god damn it what did I put myself into a week before the major but yeah I mean 7178 for him finishing almost DFL was just even even for a player of his caliber that shouldn’t happen So it it’ll be interesting to see how he how he plays at Oakmont My only thing about you know I think I agree with a lot what you just said but I think like when we’re talking about professional athletes and you kind of talk about in in the NBA a lot where you know you’re in the middle of the season you’re kind of maybe just going through the motions Just a playoff team you know they’re going to be a one two three seed or whatever but they just gota got to make it through the end of the regular season to get to the playoffs And then it’s like well when we get to the playoffs we’re going to turn it on It’s like well I don’t know Are you i think there’s a cons consistency needed in order to be great And you know I think there are similarities to golf with what I just said I don’t know if Rory can just turn it on for 4 days Maybe he can You know you’re saying you know he’s one of the greatest golf players of all time Maybe he can but I like consistency and just be like I committed to this tournament I don’t really care what happens You know next week I’m going to really bring my agame I I think you you put yourself kind of behind the eight-ball with that mentality Before Before we talk too much about Oakmont my my parting thoughts are uh their setup of I don’t want to call it a ripoff but their copy Canada’s copycat of uh of the Waste Management uh part three was was fantastic I loved I love the setup there It was directly downhill I don’t think it at maximum it only played like 130 yards um on Friday or Saturday Super short hole but it was still uh they left the hole exposed So the wind was still a big factor when when the players were playing So you you saw some some weward shots u including Cameron Champ who I may have may or may not have put a late bet in on and he just completely collapsed You know it is it is what it is man That’s the That’s the tea time tribe baby That’s it I did it for the pod Love it Yeah I love the the hockey boards they had there for the little grand team they had That was that was a nice touch That was very very Canadian of them Um and then the the Canadian national anthem when the Canadian player came up on the box I love the only only in Canada What was a a hockey jersey that uh Foxy got for winning some guys wore them on Sunday They put on someone God who was it someone was rocking an Alex Kord uh Lightning jersey I forget who it was but he he got a little bit of booze from the uh the Maple Leaf Sands but hey don’t blame him I mean you guys suck Sorry Colt Colt Nose was uh was just egging people out wearing the Panthers jersey That’s nice for for the bit For the content Did it for the bit Commit Speaking of Panthers Jordan how they doing ecklad just got a penalty because he’s a [ __ ] idiot but we’re still winning Okay So just so you know JC surprising of who the favorite is Good old Scotty Uh but before we get to to all of the the bets and top 20s what are everyone’s thoughts on I think it’s a what is it 293 yard par three they have Did you see the clip of uh Colin during one of his practice rounds he was just like “Am I supposed to hit driver here?” Like “What am I supposed to do?” Well today everyone hit driver because they were hitting into the wind It was playing over 300 yards today Everyone hit driver It was like calling It was like every player that I I get what they’re trying to do Sure make it hard but that that’s that’s a little much for me That’s a gimmick That’s that’s a gimmick That’s a gimmick Professional professional golfers we have to have some mercy on them but the toughest test in golf No play it every single day 300 yards Preach Everyone Everyone has to play this hole I know that the wind can be different throughout the day It could be dead in the in the morning It could pick up in the afternoon Whatever Whatever Get over it It’s the hardest test in golf Get over it You’re You’re there Zach Johnson’s not going to be there to complain about the course I’m really disappointed It’s a time timehonored tradition It sometimes doesn’t even make it to Thursday It’s Wednesday He’s already talking about how the course is winning So Zach we’re gonna we’re gonna miss you this year Not because well because of your scores and because of your your complaining The front runner for complaining about the course I’ve decided is our favorite player on the pod Wend Clark I think will be complaining about it Come Thursday whenever he’s done he’s going to be complaining about it He’s already missed the cut He’s already missed the cut That too That too Yeah it’s Yeah it’s Monday at 9:00 Eastern time He is Pack your bags You’re not seeing Saturday brother Head home Okay Yeah I’m I’m I’m I am excited I’m genuinely excited for for this week I from a from a content and media perspective I think this is some of the best pre pre-ournament coverage I’ve I’ve seen in a very long time to get not only golf fans hyped about this but not the rest of the world hyped about it as well Trying to bring everybody in from a social media perspective I don’t I don’t know if you guys have watched the Bryson Bryson breakdown but he’s he’s a he’s an enigma I don’t know It’s just I’m drawn to I’m drawn to that that energy that that he’s kind of bringing to the game and I’m I’m excited to see what he can do out there But uh but yeah the course is I think it rigs from foreplay posted posted something that said that they’re they’re mowing out there today but it’s still it’s still going to be impossible So I think that’s what you said over John Uh but uh other than that I’m I’m stoked They said the rough was going to be like five inches and I think they said the green’s at like 14 and a half or something It was at 16 the other day I saw 16 Yeah Menu posted a video on the putting green today and he tapped it from like 8 feet and it rolled 10 feet past and he just turned looked back at the camera and went like this I mean he just he literally tapped it And I I kind of get it right if you’re All of those guys have brand new equipment on the tour right we were just we were just we were just bitching about somebody watched a video this morning about some guy some jack wagon saying amateur player needs to have three new wedges every year or no three new lob wedges three new lob wedges every year just by itself like [ __ ] off a new gap wedge and a new sand wedge I’m like a year one one to three on your lob wedge to gap wedge Does he think I hit like a hundred lob wedges a round yes Yes Yes he does in this economy Sorry Yeah No no it’s it’s fair John It’s very fair but it places that much more of a of an advantage for hitting fairways But the rough is already going to be tough but a lot of those guys that can hit it that can can and do have that distance can still hit wedges but if you’re not in the fairway you’re not going to get the same spin as if you’re on the fairway right so you can have you can they’re [ __ ] ridiculous But the I think they had the women’s US Open at like a 14 13 or 14 which you saw there what happened and they they’ve got a lower trajectory on their ball flight They can’t hit it that just it’s a f matter of fact on average LPGA versus PGA LPGA hit hit the ball a lower flight than than the PGA tour tour players do If you’re in the fairway you’re gonna be able to spin the ball and there’s gonna be a premium on that hitting into these do you do you you keep the ball in the right plateau you don’t you miss on the right side So just accuracy all over the course for 18 holes for four straight days So who’s you know who’s capable of that who’s going to be most capable of that you know I think a guy like Rory who kind of just sprays his driver all over the place You know I don’t I don’t know how well he’s going to do this weekend You know he’s still one of the best golfers in the world so I’m sure he’s going to be at the top of you know the leaderboard but I’m going to kind of be looking elsewhere say I don’t know this course probably as well as you boys do but as far as length is concerned I think you know the not as long hitters will be okay because if they’re in the fairway they’re going to have an advantage over someone who’s just spraying it and dropping into the rough I mean it almost sounds like if you were in the rough on the wrong hole on the wrong side it’s a stroke It’s just that that’s what it’s going to be I mean you know we the the starters joke you know we someone sent out the the text message saying like “Don’t even try looking for the ball Like just look up and just hit one if you see it cuz it ain’t going to be yours.” We’ll see how true that really comes How really that is you know on Thursday Friday Saturday But yeah I’m with you John I want absolute carnage You know what was it Griffin who said four over he’ll sign his card He’ll take it You know he thinks that’s going to be the winning score You know I’d love to see it I’d love to see it That’s just me Berg what do you think yeah I mean speaking of the the score I know we looked at it earlier I think the overunder right now for the winning score was 278 and a half So we’re calling for basically over under one under which I think we’ve all agreed that something around even par slightly over is like a good championship the memories I have of growing up watching the US Open always seeing like even one under one over like on the top of the leaderboard That’s when you see the best of the best come out that are you know fighting for those pars But I I do agree I think we may see some of the shorter hitters possibly up on the on the leaderboard As as much as length nowadays is like a advantage for some of these people just with the rough and how it is I think it’s going to depend mostly on what the wind is doing on some of these longer par forward I think there was I saw one clip today that some guy was on like a 480 yard hole but he was like it’s probably playing close to like 520 because of the wind And it’s just like like I I can’t even think about hitting or playing a a 500 yard plus par4 So tough And then and then you think about if you get into the rough off the tea on that then what do you I mean that’s almost a bogey right there You’re hitting sandwich out of the rough just to get it back into the fairway It reminds me a lot of winged foot D took my point God uh just from just from the way that they’ve got the rough set up or the the discussions around the rough Heck they even had the head greens keeper talking about not wanting uh not wanting guys to be able to aim uh be happy about hitting into the bunker as well That was another point that I I heard was they don’t uh who’s it uh Harvey Pennik’s Little Red Book I don’t know if you guys have read that before but he talks he’s got uh he’s got a chapter that talks about the best the best players in his day uh when a course was super difficult off the tea they would just aim at bunkers because they were such good bunker players and they knew that the bunker they would have a consistent lie out of the bunker versus being in the rough So they they didn’t want them to be able to do that It’s there’s no there’s no forgiveness It’s carnage Yeah I um I was just looking at the scorecard here You were talking about you know how the wind’s playing Um it’s par 70 so there’s only two par fives Both over 600 Both over 600 Yep Hole four Yep And then hole 12 632 Whole 4 611 So we’ll see how the winds play on those holes But those are you know based off the urges alone Those aren’t ones that you’re necessarily going to go for in two So those are going to be not you know the birdie holes are going to be at a premium this week You know there’s a couple of short par4s We’re going to see where they put the flags I’m sure they’re going to be diabolical but yeah the rough is the rough’s going to be a problem Took my point about wing foot This is giving up big Wingfoot vibes So I went back and kind of looked at 20 that leaderboard You know Bryson won there in 2020 Matt Wolf um I think he came in second You know this this week could be a I know we said you know short hitters are going to have the chance but this could also be a a week um you know 2016 DJ won He’s obviously long hitter Um was able to get it in and up out of the uh out of the rough and and win pretty convincingly I think he won by like two or three that back in 2016 Can see Bryson doing that again this week I saw a couple of his practice holes He filmed them I think last week before he went to the Lib event in Virginia Um and I think he played him even He bogied a holy birdie one He pared one but he hit one of his drives It’s actually the the Holy Birdie It was a shorter par4 He hit it into the rough He only had like 80 or 90 yards and he got to like eight feet and made it for birdie So I’m getting ahead of ourselves here but I like Bryson I like Bryson by like a couple of strokes this week Honestly he’s coming off a good week with Lib and RTJ which is a tough course Hon was there last year so it’s a legit place they’re playing not some uni out in Skoi Illinois where they had their tour championship last year I don’t know I think that this assuming he he’s he’s won it twice so mentally he knows how to win a US Open This is one that he can he can kind of get up and down um based off his length his wedge play Um and I think he knows that you know certain holes you know bogey is going to be a really really good score And you know even if you have a double bogey here and there that’s not going to get you out of this tournament It’s going to be a long four days And he’s done it twice before So Eric I know that your your blood pressure is probably rising at a rapid rate right now but not much That’s where I’m at I was trying to find the mute button just so you didn’t say it Yeah you’re the controller up there You just mute people like Tony Reality and Around the Horn Dang Lose a point 10 10 second mute Yeah great show John you made an interesting point though there though that I think just mentally you know these guys who are the best players in the world will they accept the fact that Bogey is a good scoreer on some of these holes you know I think that’ll be really interesting to see because cuz you’re right on on some of these holes just you know take your five and just move on you know But yeah I guess what I’m curious to see is what name that we’re kind of not expecting like you know we know the usual Scotty Bryson Rory Berg who not in that group that can kind of put themselves in a position is it a a guy like Neman on Liv who’s playing really well is it a guy like Russell Henley who’s just Mr consistent even though he hasn’t really been playing that great again I’m I’m kind of looking for just hit them straight Guys that just really are consistent off the tea good enough putters Can they make a run can they kind of challenge the top players in the world at a course like this i guess the problem is you got to do it for four straight days right mhm But yeah I mean last major you know we were all sitting here saying you know again all like the usual suspects and then Thursday Friday came along and not a single one of those guys was on the leaderboard other than Scotty So I guess my mind is a little bit taking me who can I find with some value that potential to make a run Yeah I’m looking at the the scoreboard from 2016 and DJ W There’s some wild names too Did you know that Jim Furick came in second i don’t remember that That was crazy Yeah he came in second He tied for second Shane Lowry came in second in 2016 Young Shane Lowry Um Sergio he’s not in it Our boy Zack Johnson eight in 2016 So all that all that crying got him the top 10 there Bryson finished T15th as an amateur in 2016 Yeah So there’s a lot of signs pointing to to Bryson Eric you can mute me if you have to Let’s see Brooks Brooks T13 I mean again this is 2016 This is a while ago I that’s another point I wanted to make This US Open screams Brooks Kepka from the clouds Just like Oak Oill back in 2023 when the PGA another tough venue adverse conditions He kind of hung in there got to the weekend and then blew everybody away This is another one of those tournaments where he’s hasn’t done much this year He’s kind of I don’t think he’s he hasn’t really done much on live Hasn’t been a factor in the first two majors this year This is another tough tough course where you know historically he’s thrived and he’s made mention over and over again how he thinks that he his me his mental toughness he’s already beat half the field so this could be another week where you know no one’s talking about him just like in 2023 his last major he can just hang around get to the weekend when it gets really really tough um and he could battle it out so I’m throwing that throwing that name out there I think I think we picking goals Goals Picking Brooks makes such little sense that it might actually make some sense Exactly Exactly I thought you were going somewhere else that Jordan I thought you just I thought you not not net not net zero chance he wins Damn it Well one one thing that I was gonna kind of come back to that you were saying Jordan just of like the the names of people that we’re not talking about In my mind it’s like is it one of those top players in the country right now that we know can get it done but just hasn’t been playing well this season or is it someone that’s like a a Brooks or a DJ that hasn’t been around in the news for years whether they went to live and they’re just not in on the tour anymore or it’s someone that’s just kind of fell off the face of the earth I I could see either one happening Like my initial thought went to Colin I mean he’s he has the potential to do it Will someone like that come to the top i don’t know And then the other thing you were mentioning of like some people need to just realize that bogei is a good score here It’s it’s almost like I feel like the older players kind of understand that in a tournament like this and the younger generation I think are so used to just like birdie birdie birdie I saw one of the
