imitation is the highest form of flattery That’s what they say but I’m not sure how Lab Golf feels about the new putter released from Callaway The Callaway Odyssey Square Max is as close of a copycat product that I have seen since I started reviewing golf clubs It is of course the shape of the Lab DF3 a putter brand which led the way in zero torque design So what makes the Callaway putter a more desirable option than its competitors in the zero torque space well the number one advantage they have is price point So is it cheaper because it isn’t as wellm made as the competition is it inferior performing or is it simply Callaway flexing and musling their way into this category that only a few months ago was dominated by lab this comes in two very different versions when it comes to alignment stripe or no stripe Very much a personal decision The bold stripe version is maybe a little OTT for me and I would opt for the more minimal markings on the other options That said the white stripe provides alignment that replicates the Odyssey two ball concept Interestingly the square to square have a 3.3 degree forward press which is said to eliminate opening the face when a golfer attempts to forward press on their own It also means it eliminates indecision in setup and something I’m a big fan of As standard they come with an oversized grip which is okay but I have read numerous comments on my original review of the square to square whereby golfers have replaced the Odyssey grip with a lab alternative I have to say that what I originally liked about the square to square lineup was the fact that Odyssey had taken their popular and familiar profiles and adopted the zero torque balancing which provides golfers with a superb lineup of putters in styles that they were familiar with This however seems to be a less attractive version of the Lab DF3 and the only appeal it has is the price point which is not to be sniffed at But as I’m here to evaluate I’ll probably conclude with if putters were cars then this is a Maserati and the Lab is a Ferrari Now I would love a Maserati but if I have the dollar bills I’m going for the Ferrari all day
