2025 RBC Canadian Open Corey Conners Wednesday Press Conference
all right we’d like to welcome Corey Connors into the interview room here at the 2025 RBC Canadian Open Corey uh you’re the highest ranked Canadian in the official World Golf Ranking in the field this week Um in a large group of Canadians playing obviously in the national championship What are you uh looking forward to the most with a appearing with defending champion Robert McIntyre and the inform Shane Lowry tomorrow Yeah it’s uh you know anytime uh you know you get a tea time at the RBC Canadian Open is is special and um you know really thrilled to be here New venue this year I’m you know have been excited for you know the the other players and and the fans to to see this golf course I think it’s an amazing amazing course Uh you know amazing property in in general Uh two other good good courses here as well that won’t get showcased but I’ll give him a shout out And uh yeah great uh great pairing playing with uh Robert McIntyre defending champ Um you know seeing what he did last year at Hamilton was was inspiring and um always fun to play with Shane uh pretty easy guy to to be around and um you know really impressive game as well So uh it’ll be fun and really looking forward to to playing again in front of the the Canadian fans They they always come out and support the event but especially the Canadian players So really excited Before we take some questions just um you haven’t gotten over the line for a victory yet this season but it’s been a really solid season You must be pretty happy with it um top top 10 at the Masters and amongst five of them this season Yeah my my game’s been uh been consistent this year I’ve had uh a number of good weeks and kind of got got off to a better start um this year and um you know built some confidence early in the season Still looking for uh for a win or get get in the winner circle again like you said but um you know keep keep knocking at the door I think uh it won’t be too long It’s not easy to win out here but um I keep keep getting myself in position I’ve I’ve got trust in my game and I uh yeah I’m liking where things are at We’ll take question I I’ve got two questions for you The first is obviously you’ve played in a lot of Canadian Opens throughout your career even when you were an amateur Uh coming back here does it ever give you uh cause to sort of reflect on how far you’ve come as a golfer Yeah for sure Um you know growing up as a young kid in the list Ontario playing golf there every day You know coming to watch the RBC Canadian Open Um you know it was a childhood dream to to play in this event one day and you know been able to do that that many times And I I think you know being here again um definitely some reflection and I feel fortunate to you know be in the position that I’m in Um you know certainly worked hard to get here but um you know a lot of things have have gone right and uh you know I’ve had a lot of support from from my team to to be able to to get here and it’s uh it’s always exciting And obviously you already touched on this You’re in an excellent very competitive group the first two rounds but you’re missing out on the all Canadian group Do you feel a little left out that you won’t be with Taylor Mac and Nick I spend enough time uh playing with those guys I guess I’ll I’ll be okay Got paired with Taylor last week at the the memorial which was a lot of fun Um but yeah it uh you know got a got a great pairing I know those those three guys will will have a lot of fun together and um yeah be uh yeah regardless who I’m playing with it’s I’ll I’ll be feeling the love from the Canadian fans and it’s uh it’s going to be a fun week Come over to this side here Hey Corey Uh new venue here Uh it’s very sprawling venue so much opportunity to work with Um there might be some concern with its proximity to downtown Toronto What um do you think players look for in venues and sites And how does so far this uh this facility meet up with what you think players look for when they travel to tournaments Yeah this this is a championship venue The the golf course is you know got all the attributes that that you would want um you know in a in a good test It’s um you got to have every part of your game working you know you got to drive it well you got to iron it well you gota got to be efficient on the greens Um you know I think you know the facilities here you know great practice facility you know great great clubhouse locker room you know those are all uh you know added bonuses which um I think make the week a little bit easier Everything you know once you’re you’re here um you know you’ve got everything that you need You mentioned the the proximity to to this city It’s um I I think it’s it’s close enough and it’s yeah just a special place that um you know a lot of people are going to take notice of I think this week and um I know a lot of the the players uh you know have already told me some positive feedback about it and but I think everyone’s going to like it It’s going to be a good weekend Cory there’s you know at least 20 Canadians in the field and a lot of them of course are part of the Golf Canada national team I’m just curious given where you’re at in your career having won on the PJ tour etc etc Are they coming to you for advice Yeah it’s been nice to see some of some of the younger guys this week Um you know haven’t been able to to spend too too much time with them but just said hello to a bunch of guys uh you know this morning and um you know I’m always uh always open to to giving them advice and told told a few guys you know just just play your game You don’t have to do anything different you know just just trust uh trust in yourself and um try and keep it keep it simple It’s a you know I’m remembering my first couple Canadian Opens It’s it’s a it’s a big stage to be playing on You know there’s there’s definitely nerves and they uh you know they’ve all got great games and um you know they’re they’re all well prepared and hopefully uh some of the Canadians uh can can be up near the top of the leaderboard On kind of the opposite end of the age spectrum Mike Weir 32nd RBC Canadian Open tied for the most ever Just wondering if you could speak to his legacy in in the sport in this country Yeah Mike was I mean he’s an icon in Canada He was an inspiration to me you know when I was growing up and aspiring you know junior golfer Um he was someone I always had my eye on and the success that he was able to have you know really motivated and and inspired me to you know work hard and and try and you know get to the the top level of of professional golf someday And he’s uh he’s been incredibly supportive over the last few years And being able to have him as the captain of the President’s Cup team in Montreal uh last fall was really amazing and um can’t believe 32 is quite a lot that uh I I’ve got a definitely got a long way to go but he’s yeah like I said he’s he’s been an icon and um had uh he had a few chances to to win this event But um it it’s always fun you know seeing him and spent some time with him yesterday He uh he’s done so much to inspire me and and so much for golf in Canada that uh it’s awesome to have him here again Corey we make a lot of of fun experiences You know guys like us in in the room here going you know whether it’s to cabb or out to the west coast or whatever When you guys talk about a fun experience on tour I understand this is your job but when you come to a place like this and it’s kind of pretty dynamic it’s new It’s fresh and all that kind of thing Is it a fun experience Is it kind of cool to be at a at a place like this that’s kind of got that almost like abandoned dunes kind of a feel to it Yeah it it sure is Um you know it’s it’s really fun to be here And I think um you know me you know growing up not too far away from here and um you know spending some time in the summers in this area having been here um you know a number of times over the last four or five years and seeing the development seeing the changes Um you know now you know we’re here at the RBC Canadian Open You know they’ve got a lot of the things you know well on their way or or finished And it’s it’s a incredible property and it’s definitely fun to to be able to kind of soak it all in and uh get to enjoy the week All right everybody got what they need Corey appreciate it
