The 125th edition of the US Open gets underway this week as the best players in the world battle it out for the third Major of the year.

Paddy Power News tipster Martin Matthews has already delivered his US Open outright betting tips but he’s back for more!

He’s turned his attention to the wide range of ‘speciality’ markets that Paddy has made available ranging from First Round Leader to Top Englishman.

First Round Leader
Ben Griffin

The wind looks like picking up as Thursday progresses. The Poa Annua greens tend to become much tougher to navigate later in the day, so I will focus on the morning tee times starting with the in-form Ben Griffin who tees off at 7.29am local time.

Griffin has been a revelation this season, landing the ‘pairs’ event with Andrew Novak before seeing off Scottie Scheffler at the Charles Schwab Challenge. He then nearly repeated the trick at the Memorial the following week, before coming up just short to Scheffler.

One of the secrets to Griffin’s success of late has been fast starts. He opened with a 66 at the Truist Championship, a solid 70 on his way to eighth at Quail Hollow and then 66 and 65 on his two most recent Thursday’s. With positive strokes gained stats in all the key areas, Griffin could well keep his run going with another strong week.

Keegan Bradley

I’ll also run with Keegan Bradley who heads off at 7.18am local time.

The US Ryder Cup Captain heads to Oakmont on the back of an eighth place finish at the PGA and a seventh at the Memorial. If he stays in this form, he could well qualify for his own team later this year.

Above average in accuracy off the tee, Bradley ranks third on tour from tee to green so he has the long game skill sets to prosper round here. He also ranks 20th around the greens. One other factor in Bradley’s favour is that he has an excellent record when the tour heads to the North East. He has Tour wins in Pennsylvania and another in Connecticut. As a native of Vermont, he will also have plenty of support in this area.

I am not convinced Bradley’s putter will hold up here to seriously compete over the four days. However, I can certainly see him thriving on Thursday when the greens should be a little bit more receptive.

Top Englishman
Tommy Fleetwood

Tommy Fleetwood has an excellent record in the US Open with three top five finishes to his name, a reflection that his all round skill sets and patience are well suited to the challenging test the players normally face in this event.

This year, Fleetwood has been on a really consistent run of form making every single cut and posting three top seven finishes in his past five starts. With his main rival in this market Tyrrell Hatton possessing a poor record in the US Open, Matt Fitzpatrick still searching for his game and Justin Rose seemingly having lost his way since Augusta, it is quite possible another solid top 20 finish from the Southport man will be enough to beat off his compatriots.

To Miss The Cut
Rory McIlroy

I’m going to risk that Rory McIlroy gets a weekend off!

It is weird to think that just two months on from McIlroy landing his career defining Green Jacket that this could even be something to contemplate, however, things have clearly not gone to plan since and he arrives here on the back of a truly horrendous week in Canada where he beat just four players home over the first two days.

Having also struggled at the PGA at Quail Hollow, McIlroy will need to turn things around quickly if he is to be a contender here. Oakmont though is not a place to tackle when confidence is low. Having missed the cut here in 2016 when he was actually in great form, I’m happy to risk a repeat performance.

Top 20 Finish
Matt McCarty

I’ll look to repeat the trick we pulled off with Matt McCarty at the Masters.

We actually sided with McCarty for a top 40 at Augusta and he did us proud taking to the hallowed venue like a duck to water and eventually finishing 14th. With Augusta form seemingly linking well here and with McCarty accurate off the tee and possessing a strong short game, he looks set to go well on the back of last week’s fourth in Canada.
