From last-minute bike fixes in the Marin pits to Matt Jones having an absolute laugh between runs (and maybe a few crash outtakes we probably shouldn’t show 😅).
Watch Jonesy and the Marin crew battle the Tassie heat, dodge massive spiders, and somehow keep it together while prepping for the gnarliest course in the Southern Hemisphere.

what’s up how are you than you [Music] [Music] it’s going to be a squeeze mate in Tasmania here for 2025 Hardline we we got here about uh 2: in the morning this morning we saw at least five kangaroos on the drivein from Hobart which was which was pretty cool uh we we’re lucky enough to be staying in this this cabin here um me Matt and cam McKenzie are are uh camera guy uh we got a little space set up here where we’re able to build Matt a new bike he’s been on a pre-production prototype for the last 6 months or so but now the the Quake is in production and we’ll be in shops in April so we’re doing doing a frame swap onto one of the production frames uh got loads of cool new parts from Matt’s other sponsors uh and obviously a lot of spares because we just don’t know what the week is going to throw throw at us well throw out us throw out Matt I’m I’m just going to be fixing tires uh and then inside here we’ve got uh this Matt’s room myself and cam we get a nice little bunk bed and then uh cool little places to chill out really decent coffee machine um we managed to get this from our friends at Shimano which is super cool yeah right on with the bike belt so strip Matt’s bike down that he’s been riding out in Queenstown obviously it’s been pretty dusty and dry out there so there’s a lot there just dust everywhere taking apart literally clumps of dust coming out of the frame out of the bottom bracket and everything so I’m going to try try and clean stuff up um got these handy little sachet from Muk off which looks like you just put them in put them in water and then you don’t have to travel with essentially buckets of Water full of muck off so that’s pretty cool uh obviously I don’t have uh like a little spray bottle to put it in because uh didn’t think about that bit but uh I’m going to go fill a sink put it in give everything a good scrub and uh hopefully we can get it nice and clean get the bike looking fresh get the parts to match the uh box fresh frame nice so luckily the house came with this handy handy sink we didn’t have to fly with the kitchen sink which is real helpful so going pour my magic muck off pink powder in there oh look at that so yeah it’s just literally just dust everywhere probably need to give that a give that a bit of a little bit of a stir up let it dissolve and then chop there’s so much dust on this bottom bracket that’s that’s the one when I pulled it out there was just clumps and clumps of this fine Queen toown dust ANS yeah so put it in there stolen the uh dishwashing brush I’ll I’ll replace it Mr Airbnb owner yeah so we’ll let that soak a bit and then clean it up yeah but Matt we’re uh 10 10 m into the course mate what are you thinking it’s very dry it’s seriously dry which means there’s lot more snakes than normal apparently so that’s you got to keep one eye yeah you got to keep one eye on that one on the track um I had a big crash last year on that first shoot so it’s interesting actually stopping and looking at that properly but you wait John like now it gets really hairy constantly for the next might you us M te nasty stuff there is the tech between almost just as hard the big features will be scary and then hey chaos is it [Music] sweet is it possible to come up short on prob if you slow and like push no genuine question could you stop roll you want to come quite flat Landing yeah where your foot is I remember that just being like a Target kind of then we’re getting kicked so we really want to come from back here and put it down to do you actually land on those rocks though is I’m rolling through middle you reckon you land on you reckon you land on the dirt yeah well it looks a lot lot SM big one very yeah it looks way smoother this year down there it’s the same really we haven’t tou you C chopped up yeah see that big one all the way down there we’re Landing in it the flat one on the right you get next to that pretty much I wasn’t quite I was barely put your front wheel there sure really mat say bigger Charlie we’ve come to probably the most famous drop on Hardline course the cliff drop yeah straight right wait yeah it’s uh mat give us three words on this drop it’s quite a little running a few Rocks coming in PG PG words perilous large and then take flight you spinal spal it’s a long way down so I think we’re about quarter of the way down the track at the moment um we we’ve been through what what the internet deems as the the flat bit uh it’s not flat it’s not flat there’s rocks it’s off camera there’s Roots probably snakes probably who knows what else uh we’ve just got to the big the big old drop you can sort of see this gives you a great perspective of it somewhere somewhere up on the right is the takeoff somewhere down the left is the landing um yeah is the way with the tree the tree is the way is it the tree the way I just went the way so the Riders are coming down this BM here it’s approximately 6 6t deep or so and then they come around this corner and straight into this absolutely massive Gap jump up over some sort of dead tree it’s yeah absolutely insane um that Cliff drop really scares me it’s like such a big impact um and you’re really tired by the time you get to it you’ve done so many big drops you probably noticed it’s a lot of big drops isn’t there there is a lot of big drops it’s break break break bang break break break bang so the next bit does chill out but again you’re exhausted and then we’ve got all the jumps to look at at the bottom the row Gap um I remember getting to here and feeling a bit of relief though like those last two features are scary back to back they’re big things if you Tagg your back wheel on either of them you’re you know c yeah this is a proper Rock Garden here though so you can either over the log to just behind there as the landing or you’ve got an box lot of options this isn’t how it works cam what’s it like shooting track like this it’s uh it’s it’s about as good as it gets this is uh what’s it like shooting the track Walk shooting the track walk chaos there’s words I’d use for it that I probably got say on camera uh it’s uh it’s the easier day of a Hardline but it’s good lots of uh lots of pointing are looking lots of telling people to stand still he like now exhibit a Matt you figured out how to ride this section no clue there proper proper downhill wops and that’s just not a recipe for success of flat pedals is it and and for a person like you who’s clearly pretty handy on jumps when you see somebody like this and you’re you’re not sure what’s what does that mean it means it’s horrible their jump they look nice but their jumps made in a way to make it as hard as jumps can be like let’s put all the awkward ones in a row that’s what they’ve done I see myself do it every weekend um there’s no options here other than through the middle yo that’s a tight little pocket at the end there they built a road like a rock garden I know we literally thought we were out of the woods effectively now back in it’s unnecessary it was already hard enough the photo um look how small P looks down [Music] there yeah they’re still there she behind the scenes mate right Matt uh first day on the bike at Medina doing a practice lap first how you feeling about today good track walk was humbling it’s like there’s so many features to worry about but we get to go up and just ride the normal Bike Park which is nice cuz I get to bed my new brakes in got brand new Wheels like new tires you’ve done a sick job new frame thanks mate and is it full runs from the get-go or is it do you have to work your way down no they want us to completely piece our way down from the top working with the media crew the Medics everyone together to try and get them down to the midpoint before lunch and I think this evening we’ll be doing these big jumps I honestly think by the end end of today a lot of the Riders will have done every feature on course which is so unusual if you take like a normal Hardline week it takes days to get everyone through the course but I just think for some reason a lot of people have been here before a lot of people are keen and the weather’s perfect there’s no wind so today’s the day it’s going to be a long one sick good luck dude thanks mate you basically go up around on the Fire Road and then down the ACC back in your they just below the E are we ready to go yeah they’re ready to go so if you guys are ready to load up follow these guys are we rolling back to here yeah we’ll come back here come backou so out here uh what looks like deepest darkest jungle uh I guess it is a jungle of some sort uh just at the top of the Hardline course the Riders the Riders about to drop in uh they’re only only allowed to ride down to the midpoint at the moment uh yeah we’re going to I’ve got pump I’ve got tools all the things keep Matt’s bike running well uh yeah go see go see how he’s getting on right Matt just done is that the biggest the biggest drop on the course no the road Gap it’s the biggest impact actually I think the scariest one cuz you come in so slow and you get that real like sensation of falling like and then bang Bo everyone went really deep on that jump but as a crew to get everyone down to this point and we’re going to stop for lunch now like that’s a massive Triumph big tick yeah it really is I hate I’ll never get you that job I hate it every time chaos agrees but just doesn’t talk the talk he just pretends he’s fine honestly I haven’t felt that nervous in a while to be fair but like I think You’ got to be a tiny bit nervous before le start yeah not complacent yeah chaos have you done your shoes up did you do your shoes up for that drop I did my shoes up for that one I saw you doing kick flips and heel flips just before we dropped in yeah that’s what I’m so good on the skatebo can [Music] be they’ve got a mini ramp up at the start so chaos is just doing like 50/50s it jeal right Matt big big jumps are open how many map points out of 10 you giving them the to that section six it’s just flat out massive gaps but you’re in it hardly even feels like you’re in the air it’s just like cutting to The Landing this one’s going to be a problem cuz no one has a clue how fast to go the whole track’s riding faster this year and yet this Jump’s pretty much the same so I don’t think you can apply what we learned last year so I’m watching very closely and you’re just waiting for the local Rider to he’s going to open it up for everyone and then try and explain what he did although no one really you don’t think about what you’re doing when you do a jump do you and everyone’s going to hear that as gospel push back up I’m sure everyone’s going to land in a 60t Range to be honest you know what I mean when you say just no brakes from the top 500 M away there’s no way everyone’s going to hit at the same speed I’m stressed [Music] [Music] PR okay Matt do you want to what are we with Day Day 86 of Red Bull Hardline I’ve lost C we’re all still alive that’s the main thing we haven’t had to use any antivenom um I just did a full run top to bottom course preview yeah for the Red Bull course preview with Jackson Goldstone and Ronan dun and me like an impossible combin combination a very odd Trifecta of talent um and flip the last jump at the end of it which was my goal for race day so I’ve kind of done it already which is odd I don’t know where to go from here but honestly I whacked a tree on the way down made a load of mistakes but felt like the confidence boost of linking all that stuff together was huge for me last year I never managed to link it together until finals day and now on the day before qualifying yeah Midway through the week yeah I’m so much further ahead but I think that’s the bike training thinking about suspension all the rest of it um has made a Monumental difference and I’ve got mechanic so very very big change and we got a few more days to go so everyone’s gone up for more riding I’m going to stay a bit more chilled ground myself down here after hitting that tree and not get carried away cuz the guys like John who knows about downhills advised me that the track is going to change massively now and I need to be aware of that so I may as well sit out and then go and check out kind of what it looks like later on that’s right he mhm sweet y more biking it was bound to happen at some point but I did have a crash just now um I couldn’t hold a high line on a rock garden and the more I drifted down the more in trouble I got they put a new Boulder on the exit like like it wasn’t already hard enough they’ve added a boulder so I tried to Bunny Hop it and went front wheel straight into a burm over the bars and i’ like run my ankle over so I’m pretty sore definitely done with practice for today but um just changed John and like we both agree that of all the crashes I could have had so far this week I’ll take that one cuz it wasn’t that I wear some wood wasn’t that bad so tomorrow is qualifying I’ve made it through practice we’ll have an early start tomorrow cuz there’s still some people that haven’t actually hit all the features but you know after that course preview and everything I’m my confidence is booming I know I can do it um and the job I came here to do I I guess I just got a repeat now once in qualifying once in finals wouldn’t the back flip be nice so after a long day on the hill the fun isn’t over over we’ve got for me I’ve got to essentially rebuild Matt’s bike go through anything that needs fixing check that everything’s ready to go tomorrow we’ve got Cam he’s straight on his computer editing photos until sometimes till sort of 1: 2 in the morning and then out here the work’s definitely never over for Matt he’s out here doing an interview so yeah it’s once we come off the hill the fun keeps going first Riders are on course in seeding and we’re just trying to understand the speed there’s been people going long there’s been people casing there’s been people rolling round some of the jumps the wind is so inconsistent and that’s a recipe for that’s just not what you want I don’t want to say that is just not what you want at an event so Riders kind of working together and understanding like how to hit the course again I guess even though the whole week’s been about hitting the course it’s all just suddenly changed it’s go time I’m going up for my seating run I’ve honestly only done two practice runs today which isn’t a lot but my body is starting to feel pretty beaten and we want to look after the bike um tires and everything so yeah a lot of people have crashed to be honest making mistakes I think the track’s changing the conditions are changing everyone’s worried about the wind so yeah a lot to worry about but actually you know I just got one drop to do that’s roll top to bottom so I’ll see you in about an hour John [Applause] [Music] lay down all good yeah I’m so nice one cheers boys Steve P up top away right Mt how you feeling race day yeah all right actually the conditions look good that wind we had yesterday doesn’t look like it’s here yet but that’ll be here this afternoon for you mate just like clockwork it’ll arrive when I’m up the top yeah right I’m bit sore but there the end is Insight literally isn’t it you seem pretty relaxed yeah for a man that’s about to ride down the hardest downhill track in the world I’m going to do what I’ve done in practice just a tiny bit criers I think there’s some guys that are saving lines and things finals which they’re in a different boat mentally aren’t they I don’t know yeah I’m all right I think the fact that I’ve survived the first 5 days means it’s pretty pretty likely statistically that I’ll survive the you know so yeah probably feel better every day now yeah we to Australia buy stuff with some mates are you mad [Music] about my Bo

That new Marin Downhill bike seems to have made a big difference this year.
Please push and follow matt to do more racing, his lead ups and training has been excellent.
Are Marin going to start supplying Marin quakes in Forest of Dean bike shop?
Great work – that bike goes hard! And that course preview was immense, loved the peak behind the curtain on the first viewing.
Great to see the behind the scenes of Matt's behind the scenes! Top job team! 💯🚴
Well done Marin and Matt, bring on Hardline Wales.
Why does Matt look more like Jono in this video?
I enjoyed everything about this Hardline event. All the behind the scenes, hot tub podcast, rider support for each other and of course the racing. What an event. Well done to everyone involved, both on bikes and behind the scenes.
