shortcut what’s the problem with this well most of these swing aids are designed to treat symptoms and not the causes fix your slice in 10 minutes magic lag trainer never miss again it’s just enough visual change to make you think you have improved until the next frustration hits and you’re back online shopping for that hope again but here is what can work and what nobody really sells is a setup match to your tilt balance and structure a downswing sequence that starts from the ground and not your hands and real understanding of your own movement pattern it’s not sexy it doesn’t go viral but this is the difference between band-aids and breakthroughs so no product is going to replace a body that is out of sequence but a better understanding will and just like yesterday’s video let’s just recap what social media does for a second a lot of these viral instructors are great at getting views but not always at getting results they show you a move that works for them but they never ask if it works for you and through our previous investigation on these we know that most of these instructors don’t even do what they’re telling you to do and the reason most of these tips don’t stick they’re not tailored to your body your mobility your rotation or your time to practice or even your talent it’s basically flash over function and it’s why so many golfers stay stuck so let’s just flip the script instead of watching another tip let’s find out what your swing actually needs i built this quick 19 checkpoint self assessment guide to help you we’re going to take you down this in this video and this quiz might help you reveal or identify what is breaking down in your emotion so then you can go back and look at the cause and effect when it does break down so let’s start with this cause and effect self assessment checklist that’s a mouthful and I’m going to read them as they are if you agree with this go ahead and put yourself a check mark keep tally of how many check marks you do have let’s start with setup my weight is balanced between the balls of my feet and my heels at address if it is check mark my spine tilts forward from the hips not just bending from the waist check mark my trail arm is relaxed and elbow is slightly bent not rigid or flared check mark my grip pressure is light i could wiggle my fingers without losing the club check mark so let’s go into back swing my chest rotates away from the target without my hips swaying laterally if it does check mark my trail leg maintains some sort of flex it does not straighten out too early if it does check mark my arms stay connected i’m not lifting or faking my width check mark i stay in posture and I don’t stand up during the back swing check mark now let’s go into the down swing my lower body initiates the down swing not my hands or shoulders check mark my hips begin rotating before impact not just sliding laterally check mark my trail elbow stays in front of my body and not trapped behind it if you do check mark my hands are ahead of the club face at impact check mark i rotate through the shot instead of flipping the hands check mark now let’s go into impact and release i take a divot after the ball on iron shots check mark my wrist release naturally not early not held off check mark and my head doesn’t rise out of posture before impact check mark now let’s scoot on down to ball flight and some feedback i tend to miss in one direction more than the other which provides some sort of predictable miss check mark the ball feels compressed at impact not scooping or glancing check mark and I can predict my shot shape on most swings even if it’s a fade or a draw check mark so hold on to your scores because there was 19 total check marks because I’m going to break down what your total means about your likely compensations whether they could be upper body lower body your sequencing your tilting or even flexibility based so if zero to five boxes were checked you have pretty severe structural breakdown so you’re likely dealing with a total body compensation your mechanics are breaking down across the board your setup your back swing your sequencing and your rotation are all affected some common issues could include standing up in the back swing or having that early extension swaying instead of rotating flipping through impact no consistency in ball flight or striking the primary cause could be a lack of tilt and structure in your body there could be little to no lower body engagement and you likely have poor body awareness or you might have mobility issues here’s the reality this is probably the reset zone you’re not broken but you need to stop chasing tips and rebuild from setup to motion pattern if you score between six to 10 boxes checked you fall into the region of the upper and lower body disconnection game so basically you have one segment of your swing either the upper or the lower working against the other some likely signs could be your hips are sliding or stalling while the hands take over your shoulders spin out before the lower body rotates your trail arm gets stuck behind the body in transition and you could have inconsistent compression some primary causes for this could be poor sequencing and timing the weak tilt leads to compensations of your outside and this is typically seen in self-taught or you two built-ike swings so your focus should be to get your lower body and spine tilts synced together before fixing the arms or release remember the outside is there to save you so focus on the inside first if you score between 11 and 13 boxes checked you fall into the functional but fragile so you’ve built a pattern that can work but small compensations are creating inconsistency or one persistent miss some typical issues you might have is a slight early extension the overuse of hands to square the club face narrow or late transition and you do have functional contact but poor face path matchups primary cause for this could be incomplete posture or tilting the transition flaw and rushing from the top or not clearing through at impact your focus should be to start refining your sequencing and your posture in other words small changes here can create huge returns if you fall between the 14 and 17 congratulations you now fall into a patterned swing with very small micro leaks you’re basically stable you can repeat your motion under normal pressure and you likely have a predictable miss or slight strike variability your common issues could be a subtle tilt loss you could have early club face closure or under rotation your posture could break down later in the golf swing and as a result you’re missing out on max compression or potential distance primary causes could be slight technical habits that creep in every now and then often posture your trail arm coordination or your finish of your rotation some focuses you could use is video or some coaching to highlight your leaks you’re past the basics now it’s about your performance and if you fall into the 18 to 19 checklists congratulations you are athlete you’re athletic you fall into the athlete mode because you’re swinging within your structure your sequencing and your intent and this in turn means your swing reacts to the ground and body not just your hands and timing some key traits you are looking at is you have a stable setup your ground up sequencing inside out is working correctly you do have a controlled release and you have predictable shot shape under pressure the primary cause is none you’re moved beyond your compensations now it’s all about sharpening scoring skills and managing course variability next steps you got to take your stats you got to train you got to practice tougher lives add strategy you’re   3. I took some group lessons last year and they provided some useful tips but didn't really help to correct my swing. On your advice, I have actually worked on reducing the length of my backswing to almost feel like I'm taking a half-swing and it has helped keeping my arms and chest connected.

  4. I sent in a couple swing videos. I suspect I have become over-reliant on upper body and my hips are not rotating as far as they should through impact, belt buckle is barely turned past the ball and my trail foot is still flat on the ground until follow-through. This has been enlightening.

    I have changed my only thought on irons is to hit the ball in the center of club face in a descending blow as to take a straight divot to target line. ZERO technical swing thoughts, just let everything happen naturally for my body to accomplish that simple task. Don’t care how it looks.

    Striking ball much more consistently now and I don’t lose it one day to the next.

  11. Best training aid for $5, a yard of thick rope, But it doesn't teach you a perfect swing! But It does teach you Sequencing, Athletic movement, body release which most dont have, im 65 but scored 18! so it works!
    I only teach my new golfer GF, tell her swing the Snake dont Kill the Snake!

  12. Great Q's. Is my assessment real or feel; not quite sure. I think I do these correct when I send my drive straight, but then if I push or hook my 3 wood off the deck, not sure where it is at then. Forgetting to do something – taking it back too far or going too fast usually the main issue. Reducing the failure rate percentage is the focus; being able to hit 4 or 5 correctly in a row; a work in progress still.

  15. I scored 12. My issue i cannot stop is a bit of casting and standing up (0.5-1inch). According to chatGPT my biggest flaw is my right shoulder not tilting early on in transition. I still cant stop it trying this though lol
