Hitting behind the ball (aka a fat shot) is one of the biggest problems for amateur golfers.
That’s why Forbes-featured instructor Eric Cogorno and JT Thomas teamed up to share a great drill that fixes the three biggest causes of hitting the ground too early behind the ball and making poor contact:
lack of weight shift
rotation
early wrist release
Using one simple hip motion and an alignment stick you can transform your swing and start hitting the ball more solid.

hey guys in today’s video we’re going to show you how to hit the ball solid every single time and most importantly how to stop hitting behind the golf ball Eric agoro here with my good friend JT Thomas with performance golf we know right to go play good golf to enjoy the game the first thing we’re all looking for is consistent solid contact right how do we hit ball first and ground second and JT and I have coached together for a long time we’ve seen a lot of different golfers but among all those different golfers and you would fit into this there’s really a big three there’s three reasons as to why you might be hitting behind the golf ball we’re going to go over what those are and give you one simple drill to fix all those at the same time JT I guess let’s go over what those three are first before we go into the fields I would say the biggest thing that we see golfers lack or hitting behind the ball is number one a lack of shift forward so too far behind it number two a lack of rotation and then number three would be the early wrist release correct not enough shift not enough turn early wrist release yes so we’re thinking we might be able to fix all those at one time yeah for sure absolutely and so one of the key things that you had mentioned um that I see you coach a lot of players is really using that lead hip and that lead side of your body to start the process of number one getting the weight for can you talk us through that piece yeah for sure so um you know a big deal with golfers who struggle obviously hitting behind the golf ball a lot of times their weight is going to be back right so that’s a big deal that we see a lot of poor golfers and a lot of times the reason their weight is back is because left hip’s too far up too fast it’s easy to miss that yeah you said a lot of the reason that golfers will be have their weight too far back and HIIT behind is because their left hip is too far up too fast correct okay that’s interesting so if you know if I go up to the top here and I start to push my hip up right it starts to take my upper body tilt it too far back my upper body and the arms and the club when they’re swinging have a lot of weight or mass so guess what if I have a lot of this hip going up my mass falling back it’s going to be really hard for me to hit in front of the golf ball so big key there it’s not just about the hip uh motion let’s say forward towards the Target or away that’s part of it but it’s also about how far up or down the lead hip is that can control that weight motion for sure and actually that is the big key to solve all of the issues so that’s why it’s so useful so you know if we go up to the top here and that left hip goes up too fast well I get too far away from the ground and then I start losing wrist angles because that’s the only way I can hit the ground right so if I go up to the top here and I raise my left hip up and I hold the wrist angles I literally can’t get to the ball instead I have to let go of them so what we’re trying to do is find that route to where we can start to fix the hip and ultimately our brain hopefully our supercomputer will start to kick in where we can start to work on the wrist get the low Point more forward yes such a good point there like all these things work together yes you get the hip piece wrong you’re going to start early releasing the wrist which is one of those big three and you’re probably not going to turn very much either no way right so that one little key move could literally like make or break things so we say okay cool great love it how do we start to feel that how do we start to train that in yeah for sure so I like to use um this alignment stick here to kind of help us feel both of these things and illustrate both of these things so what you can do is just make you know alignment stick make your Club really long essentially right so you’re just going to put it on the side doesn’t really matter so much about your grip here um we’re just trying to understand the sensation and what what happens when we do this so you know when we go back here and we start to have that left hip go up you can see again where that club starts to point you can see where the sorry the button of the alignment stick starts to point you see the club’s going to bottom out behind the ball okay versus now if I go up to the top and I just put my left hip more Down Bam you can see where that uh alignment stick is pointing literally right at the golf ball yeah so the great thing about that is is again if we keep it going along that line now now you see my hands are more forward shaft more forward bam I’m going to hit a really nice compressed golf shaft so it’s almost like when you start down it’s like left hip down alignment rod down good good exactly left hip up alignment Rod up bad early release yeah you’re not going to want to skip this one Martin Chuck here Golf Digest top seven instructor after teaching over 127,000 golfers I’ve discovered why most players stay stuck it’s not about spending more time practicing it’s about practicing the right things in the right order every golfer has about five swing flaws but there’s always one root flaw causing most of your problems when you fix that one thing the others start falling into place naturally over the past 15 years I’ve personally taught more than 1,500 schools these are immersive two-day experiences you’ll get Hands-On coaching to fix your root flaw and finally see real progress we’ll use state-of-the-art Techni technology to pinpoint your biggest issue then create a customized plan for your swing and your goals plus we’ll take you on the course to make sure it all sticks it was uh absolutely a fantastic experience uh in a very very short period of time I learned how to uh correct some of the problems that I’ve had and I’m looking forward to using those drills to continue proving my game if that sounds like the Breakthrough you need click below to see if there’s a spot available this could be the one thing that transforms your game yeah can you show us that good version one more time JT yeah so up here to the top left hip Down Bam you can see again I can I’m able to create Force along this line this what we want and you’re almost like almost even getting to the point where that alignment Rod’s pointed like in front of the ball yeah exactly almost in front of the ball yeah got and there’s my low Point again I’m going to have really nice contact if I just end up flipping that around right so low point in front that’s the bottom of the energy bam there’s the club head so like of those three this drill really hits those those two to start which is the getting the hip down and forward the weight forward and then the wrist angle part can you do like one or two rehearsals with that then let’s hit a little half one great just to get those feels and JT when you’re feeling it is it just as simple as you’re like hey left hip quite literally just down and forward that’s the main thought process yeah it’s the same Vector that the that the shaft is going so the same you know way that the vector of the shaft where it’s going down and forward and on an incline okay that’s where the same thing we’re trying to feel with our hip down if we drew like a line to the hip exactly like a skewer through it it would be the same look okay so that same Force same energy we’re using that same Force to help us bam Direct on the shaft as well yeah okay so they’re both the same hip down butter the club down and you see that’s that’s the piece that really puts the force into the shaft like that’s step one yeah that’s step one yeah gotcha okay and then once you got a feel you would do like a little hit kind of with the same exactly yep so once I have that little feel there you know I have the demonstration of it then I kind of throw that stick down and then try to make that same swing same feeling left hip down butt end of the club down yeah okay I like that so trying to do that together and you can just bun it out there again the goal is to make sure you have solid contact to maybe even a little bit thin when you first start these that’s it never hitting behind it never hitting behind it so go and just do a l one here left shoulder down left hip down yeah that’s pure yeah super good contact and so in the beginning parts of that like JT did that swing you know half swing a little bit slower um when we have those two pieces in there JT let’s just say from like a timing perspective immediately to start your down swing yes that’s the first moves of my down swing yeah I was immediately trying to get that left tip to go low um again that first thing gives me that Vector of force to be able to put my hands so it would be hip first use the hip energy to help me get my hands lower you know get the butt end of the club more forward and then maybe just having a little reference that butt of the club staying pointed down longer obviously if the golfer like if you’re watching and you really release it really soon you’re going to need to feel that for longer yes more longer right long as possible so that’s really like the weight part that helps the wrist part and then from the rotation perspective maybe as we’re doing that would you say like a little bit of chest rotation during it or after it yeah yeah so kind of right after it so what you’re trying to do is and if we kind of use the stick again it helps us a lot to where we’re going to do that same you know Vector drill you know you can call it up to the top here pushing left hip butt end of the club down now how do I get this energy to the ball yeah well now it’s all we’re doing is kind of taking this Vector of energy and starting to rotate our chest and Bam we’ve transported the club into the ball gotcha okay so we’re not going to go here get this vector and then just keep going like this to the ball right sure buttons at the ball the whole time exactly yep so instead we’re going to make sure that the chest starts to rotate buttons belt buckle also get ahead of the ball yeah I love that and so if we let’s hit another one JT um so where your shirt buttons are chest points a nice reference obviously at impact we’re going to want to feel like that’s a little bit of head and certainly through the ball you’re trying to get the shirt buttons out towards that Target for sure pretty so maybe like one or two little rehearsals just to get a feel again then we’ll hit a little half one out yeah yeah and JT does a lot of this really well in his swing right so he’s only got to feel it a little bit or he’ll overdo it yeah but if you’re coming from hitting behind the ball you want to feel these a lot in the beginning yeah awesome so you can see like his club’s bottoming out several inches in front of the the golf ball again exaggerating those pieces and if those are the big three that is to why someone hits behind the ball if it’s that weight shift lack of that lack of rotation or early wrist release you want to hammer all three of those absolutely overdo all of those in the beginning that’s such a nice little drill to start with when you’re doing this on the side of the club we’re talking like nine iron shorter Club first yeah 9h hour pitch and wedge yeah slow swings and build up from there we’re not doing this full s with the driver yet no right we’re going slower first and building up I think with a steady little dose of that when you’re practicing and then taking those FS out on the golf course is going to help you hit the ball so much more solid you just have to be willing to exaggerate enough in the beginning yeah you got to exaggerate Super Key hope this helps you let us know in the comments down below if you’ve tried a drill like this before or if this one does help you we’d like to love to hear your thoughts on those if you did like this video click that like button Thanks for all the content! It really helps
I think you nailed my problem. I try to shift my weight forward, but raise my lead hip in the process. I'm gonna concentrate on lowering it instead. Thanks for the tip! Keep up the good stuff, I find that Performance Golf has some of the best ideas.
Interesting but how is this in conjunction with the lessons you had with Erica Larkin? No reference to either in either video
Eric & JT: took this to the range today and hit 3 wedges, 3 eight irons, and three six irons. I'm 60 and have never, ever, hit it better in my life (and I'd like to think I hit it pretty well). After those nine shots I just packed up my clubs because I didn't want to jinx anything! One question — and I hope with 150k subscribers, you see this! — same hip action with the fairway woods and driver? Tom in Dallas
Anatomically , rotation of the pelvis in the downswing is dependent upon the straightness of the lead femur ( thigh bone) . Moving the lead hip too high OR moving it too much laterally will straighten the lead femur prematurely and will reduce a golfers ability to rotate his/her pelvis .
The hip lifting issue is my issue exactly. I’m gonna try this drill. See if I can get this down. Thanks.
wow opened my damn eyes. I knew i had all these problems but didnt know how to fix them. now its time to practice it on trackman for a month. ty
I tried this method with very good results on my fairway hybrids and irons. Can this downward shift and rotation work with drivers ?
Are there any performance golf instructors near Cleveland, OH area?
