Detroit Catholic Central made it back-to-back state titles by winning the Division 1 championship held Friday and Saturday at Michigan State’s Forest Akers West Golf Course.

The Shamrocks got the win in large part thanks to their Round 1 score of 283, and finished with a two-day total of 587, seven strokes better than runner-up Rochester Adams (594 total).

Catholic Central junior Jack Whitmore combined to score a 139, the second-best total of any individual at Forest Akers West over the weekend other than Okemos senior Ian Masih, who was just one stroke better.

Also representing the champions were Dillon Che (146), David Krusinski (151), Collin Davis (151) and Luke Slankster (159).

Nick Smith led the way for the Highlanders with a 143 total, the sixth-best score of the D1 finals. Not far behind for Adams were seniors Jack Vogel (146) and Daniel Lee (148), followed by Drew Rzeppa (157) and Austin Kaczocha (160).

Also among the top-10 team finishers were Bloomfield Hills Brother Rice (sixth place, 617 total), Lake Orion (ninth, 628) and Bloomfield Hills (10th, 631). South Lyon East took 17th place with a 654. The Warriors were without a top-10 individual scorer but led by junior Bennett Boyle, who was just stroke outside of that threshold, finishing with a 147.

Lake Orion’s Connor Fox duplicated his fifth-place individual landing from last year’s final as the Dragons senior shot a 142.

An individual qualifier, Birmingham Groves senior Alex Lustig also made the top-10 leaderboard, tying other locals like Che and Vogel with a 146. Another lone representative from his school, Oxford senior Brady Fox also ended inside the top-50, carding a 158 to tie for 44th place.

Senior Leo Bugajewski led Bloomfield Hills with a 152 and junior Ben Laskoff paced South Lyon East with a 159.

In his first year as head coach, former assistant Mike Fras continued the winning tradition set by Catholic Central’s Mike Anderson, under whom the Shamrocks had won a handful of titles dating back to 2015, including a three-peat (2015-17).
