major i know i know what about that tournament in April in Augusta the Masters Pimeo Cheese Green Jacket Honorary Starters i know i get it i like it it’s like your second favorite child you like it don’t get me wrong i’m happy it’s here but I like the US Open more it’s my favorite week in golf i love how it moves around i love how difficult it is i love all the qualifiers we’re going to get into all of that in just a minute we’ve got a really big show we’ve got Ryan Fox fresh off his win in Canada we’ve got Billy Horchel joining us we’ve got Alex Meyers with a fraud watch uh we haven’t done one of those since he buried Sam Sneed uh he just threw dirt on a living legend uh we’ve got Rick Gaming on to give us 10 picks we’ve got a Q&A from you guys you guys submitted some awesome questions for Alan Chipnuk we’ve got a great blind ranking that Ben is going to quarterback first let’s tie a bow on the week that was in golf starting north of the border at TPC Toronto at Osprey Valley epic watch along last night with you all if you guys joined the watch along yesterday thank you so much it was so much fun so Sam Burn Sam Burns post 62 right around the time the leaders are making the turn and you’re wondering is this going to be good enough is 18 under going to hold up and then he had to go Neo from the matrix we’re talking he’s going this way he’s going that way he’s dodging bullets left and right he dodged one from Cameron Young who needed to birdie 18 to get into a playoff and made bogey he dodged one from Benon who needed to eagle 18 but made bogey he dodged one from Kevin U who needed to eagle 18 but only managed birdie and he dodged one from Matteo Monoser who just kept hitting this ugly 260 low pole into the rough uh but he didn’t dodge all of them from Ryan Fox 38-year-old from New Zealand he’s a late bloomer in the sport didn’t turn pro until 25 which is very very rare we we talked about that in this interview I did with him you’re going to see that in just a second he won his first PJ tour event last month at Myrtle Beach the week before the PGA Championship and then he this week he’s one downplay playing in the 18th hole he hits the fairway then decides to lay up from 260 into the win a lot of us on the watch along why does he lay up why he lay up we put it to a perfect wedge distance hit it to about 12 feet makes the birdie to force a playoff then both Burns and Fox hit the fairway both lay up on the first playoff hole and Burns ends up with a six-footer to win and you’re thinking it’s over he’s literally the best putter on tour he’s first in strokes gained this year and misses on the high side just kind of powered it through the break they play the hole twice more trade pars before Foxy finally hits what he called one of the best shots of his life here’s me on the watch along watching Ryan Fox ryan Fox from 258 on the fourth playoff hole he gives it a crack that looks like it’s on a really good line and 175 ball speed it’s on the It’s It’s tracking oh golf shot from Ryan Fox there it is that’s the one we’ve been waiting for Mr fox to about 8 ft for Eagle there it is fortune favors the bold ryan Fox goes for it on the fourth playoff hole and hits an absolute beauty and now the pressure is squarely on Sam Burns what a shot from Ryan Fox so Burns played next and hit a really good shot himself but three jack from about 30 ft for par so Fox was able to two putt for his second win i really enjoyed getting to speak with him afterward uh sometimes with these interviews I know the guy and there’s a personal relationship there sometimes you don’t i didn’t know Ryan Fox but I felt like I did cuz he’s a warm a warm gentleman uh here’s myself and Ryan Fox all right we’re joined by Ryan Fox that was uh that was a grind man four playoff holes uh you won a a proud national open today i you know you hear guys talk about national opens a lot this tournament’s been going on for 121 years could you feel the a little extra weight closing this one out yeah um it obviously it’s such an iconic event um yeah look to to get in the playoff I obviously did pretty well down the stretch to give myself a chance there and um there was some pretty scratchy stuff in the playoff there early but it was pretty cool to get the job done in the end and um you know the atmosphere out there was awesome you could you definitely feel like it’s something different with a national open and um yeah it was it was awesome to to have my name on that trophy is is pretty humbling to be honest the emotions of of the playoff i mean did you think that when Sam had that six-footer to win on the first playoff hole did you think you were cut oh 100% I’d given him that um and I’ve been on the receiving end of of putts and playoffs before in Europe a couple of times and you just kind of wouldn’t say expect the worst but you just expect people to do crazy things it tends to happen in playoffs and um Yeah well you did it earlier this year yeah yeah i had one ch the chip in a you know it was you’re not supposed to do that and kind of you know expect Sam to make a 5-footer there obviously let me off i got really lucky that second playoff hole had a terrible shot going at the green and got away with it and then you know we both didn’t play the third playoff hole very well and thankfully we we played the fourth one a little bit better hit a couple of good shots in there and I said it earlier to the guys here in the media center that three was probably the best shot I’ve ever hit in my life and um to do it in that kind of situation is pretty awesome it was fantastic to watch 175 ball speed at 3wood by the way it was it was it was really something special you know I wanted to ask you a bunch of guys made their debuts this week uh Luke Clanton you know went to the PJ tour you guys and in this age of a lot of feels like college players and young guys coming out and dominating right away your career arcs a little bit more throwback where it feels like you’re playing the best golf career in your mid30s what does that say about just the the journey you’ve been on and and what’s changed yeah um I mean I started late like I I played rugby cricket through school i I was like a two handicapper at 18 started a law degree and go ah I’ll try I want to do something competitive I’ll play golf and absolutely loved it turned pro at 25 that is really late and then just work my way through the tours obviously and um you know probably since co like 22 onwards I’ve played some really really good golf um I don’t know what that is whether it’s maturing whether it’s just tidying up all the little things over the years um but yeah look to be you know rookie on the PJ tour at 37 definitely isn’t common these days um it’s it is seriously impressive what these college kids are coming out and doing straight off the bat you know contending in events winning early um well now I want to know how good you would be if you you know went to college in the US and started ear you got that’s kind of like enter your brain like should I have started a little earlier well I mean I I I wish I’d started tournament golf a little earlier than I did but I wouldn’t change anything um you know I’m here now um it’s I love playing rugby and cricket growing up i grew up in that kind of family um my dad played for the All Blacks my mom’s dad played cricket for New Zealand like I I played everything growing up and I always wanted to be a sports person it just took me a while to figure out which sport I wanted to play and um I’m glad I figured it out eventually but yeah it would have been nice to be to play a little bit of junior golf or something just to to start that a little bit earlier but um yeah I I’m happy being a throwback and and peing in my mid-30s that’s fine you’re peing at the right time two wins in your last four starts now I I I want to know your emotions because on on one hand you are playing the best golf life you’ve won two of your last four starts on the other hand you’re going to a golf course that is designed to kick you in the teeth repeatedly uh do we dare say that we’re feeling confident going into Oak no no i don’t think Oakmont wants a golf course you can ever say you’re confident in in playing um I’ve I’ve heard enough from guys that have played it over the last couple of weeks that it is going to be a beast you know I I can’t I didn’t go to the qualifying on Monday i I figured if I had a good week over the any of the last three weeks I could play my way in but also thought well if I don’t get in not getting my teeth kicked in is not a bad thing either and um you know obviously sort of last minute Charlie here but I’m I’m not complaining go and see go and see how hard it’s going to be you know the the next few days but you know I’m obviously playing well every part of my game’s kind of working so it’s nice going into a major like that um we’ll see what happens but I’m I’m looking forward to the challenge of it that’s for sure well it’s been good stuff congratulations man and yeah it was a hell of a show thank you i when I was watching that I thought back to Minu Lee when he was on our show after he won in Texas and he was saying um I’ve I asked him about his confidence level going to the Masters it was right before the Masters he’s like “I’m I can’t wait my confidence is super high going into the big dance.” Meanwhile Ryan Fox is like interrupts you he’s like “Nope don’t even absolutely not.” He’s like “We’re playing Oakmont i’m definitely not feeling confident.” Uh speaking of confidence one more takeaway I had from Canada i’m a little concerned about what I heard and saw from Rory Maroy this week i think he’s a little concerned too uh it started actually before the week when he was asked a question about his preparation and his practice since the Masters and he essentially admitted to having a little post Augusta hangover here’s Rory Mroy i don’t know if I’m chasing anything i would certainly say that the last few weeks you know I’ve had a couple of weeks off and going and grinding on the range for 3 or four hours every day is you know maybe a little tougher than it used to be just you know you have this event in your life that you’ve worked towards and it happens you know sometimes it’s hard to find the motivation to to get back on the horse and and and go again so I think the last two weeks have been good for me just as a reset just to sort of figure out where I’m at in my own head what I want to do where I want to play um and yeah reset some goals you know I thought it was a good time to reset some goals i you know I’ve had a pretty good first half of the season and I I want to have a have a good second half of the season now too so I want to it’s like a I’m going to pose a hypothetical for you okay let’s say you started a clothing brand okay and your pie in the sky dream is to sell it to what’s a big like LVMH you want to sell it to what is it louis Vuitton Moette Hennessy sick sick company that is a company right there that’s what I want okay so you want to sell it to LVMH right that’s like your goal you get super close in 2014 that’s your first flirtation with LVMH but something collapses in the deal you get close again in 2017 and 2019 and 2021 and 2022 and 2023 and then you get like as close as you could possibly get in 2024 but it doesn’t happen then finally in 2025 you make that deal with LVMH in normal life it’s totally understandable for you to take your foot off the gas right like that’s that’s only natural but that’s not what we want from our athletes they have the physical gifts that we don’t and we’re jealous of that and so we expect them to be singularly motivated by maximizing every inch out of their gifts we want everyone to have that tiger mentality and maybe it was a bit naive and I’ll put my hands up i was firmly in this camp to think that that winning the Masters would automatically unlock something in Rory and that he’d go on this crazy run now it’s still possible but part of Rory’s appeal is that he’s not Tiger Woods he’s not a maniac who wants to absolutely embarrass his opponents he’s not like Scotty Sheffller who when golf is like breathing it seems like you know it’s almost second nature he’s a dude with very real and very relatable emotions and after achieving a lifelong dream he took his foot off the gas a little bit at least in the weeks immediately after and I want to give credit to Michael Bamberger for his call he was on this show and when everyone was saying Royy’s going to go on this run Royy’s going to go on this run he’s like I don’t think so i don’t think it’s going to happen now time will tell but Michael’s looking pretty smart right now speaking of which his new book and this is not an advertising deal this is not anything the book is literally about nothing it’s called The Playing Lesson i devoured it it was so good it’s really just him traveling through golf for year he writes about Liv and the PGA Tour and the amateur game and like Saturday morning proams and playing random ass public horses that man can narrate me taking a leak in the morning and it would be interesting yeah good writing transcends plot he’s that good but I I digress but so yeah Rory had a really bad tournament after those comments he shot 8 over 78 on Friday drove it all over the place and from an X’s and O standpoint that’s what’s that’s been what’s been the drop off since the Masters he’s just not driving it straight and he didn’t really drive it that straight at the masters but you can get away with it there you can find gaps in the trees remember he did he hit a bunch of shots that were like over the trees and you get a good lie in the pine straw and you can still get to that it’s not going to happen in Oakmont you’re going to have to hit fairways um and speaking of the driver so we we know that his gamer failed the test at the PGA that was one of the reasons why I didn’t want to talk to media he was pissed about that getting out there he was using the old the Qi10 which was last year’s tailor made model they came out with a new one every year um and he decides he’s going to use that opportunity with the last one getting dinged to switch to the Qi35 which is this year’s model he does not like it he does not like it at all here’s where he’s talking about his equipment issues i And also like the driver stuff there was I was a little pissed off because I knew that Scotty’s driver had failed on Monday but my my name was the one that was leaked it was supposed to stay confidential two members of the media were the ones that leaked it so why you know I and again like I I didn’t want to get up there and say something that I regretted either you know because there’s a lot of people that I’m I’m trying to protect Scotty i don’t want to mention his name trying to protect Taylor made i’m trying to protect the USGA PJ of America myself you know so I just didn’t want to get up there and say something that I regretted at the time and with with Scotty stuff like that’s not my information to share i knew that that had happened but you know that’s not you know that’s not on me to to share that and I felt you know that process is supposed to be kept confidential and it wasn’t for whatever reason and you know that’s why I was I was pretty annoyed at that and then he said after the tournament after he shot 78 on Friday he did speak to media and it it was a great session and that’s why we want guys to speak to media like it was it was great and he said “Uh this is my second failed experiment with this driver with the new Qi35.” That’s right he did try it once before he tried it once before didn’t work he tried it again this week still doesn’t like it so uh I can imagine Rory flew back to Florida on Friday night and was probably hitting drivers like into the night that’s the image that’s the image I have in my head but look if there’s a guy who could flip the switch someone with ungodly talent it would probably be someone with Rory’s level of gifts and I don’t think motivation should be an issue with the United States Open i almost slipped there i almost said I almost used the abbreviation but I’m not going to um but yeah I feel like it’s Scotty and Bryson and then everyone else this week and that includes Rory and going into the uh Quail Hollow i thought Rory was on that tier but just the com if it was one thing or the other if it was kind of you know the stuff about the motivation or the driver but the two of them combined not the place you want to miss fairways like US Open in United States Open in general you Yeah careful oakmont specifically with this 5 in rough and growing because it’s been raining it’s been raining it’s been raining all right we’re going to hop into a segment we call the Knockground presented by Knockground i mentioned this at the top of the show but they are presenting sponsors and it means the world means the world to all of us here uh and we’ve got a promo code i’m wearing the Brook Lines this uh week which is a US Open Golf Course so I’ The Brook Lines have to come with me states Open Golf did I say Did I say it the United States Open Golf Course that’s what I’m here for that’s annoying but uh these are amazing sunglasses $35 they come with me all year on tour fantastic quality just as good as it gets as good as it gets uh Knockground we got a promo code if you go to knockground.com and use the promo code dan on golf 20 you get 20% off your first order brings these under $30 this is a ridiculously good price get if you’re a supporter of the show buy yourself a pair of Knockgrounds i’m going to say that speaking of uh sponsorships the PGA tour sponsorships they continue to grow so this is from Josh Carpenter our boy at Sports Business Journal he was on the show with our little business hour uh the tour is anticipating 1 billion in renewed or new deals from December 2024 through the end of this season now I remember last year there was all this panic when Wells Fargo dropped out of their sponsorship which and Honda drops out of their longtime sponsorship of the tournament in Palm Beach Gardens it was like “Oh the sponsors are leaving.” Nope wells Fargo uh exits and Truist enters new Bank Honda exits Cognizant enters and the tour’s having a great year ratings are way up uh despite the persistent divide in the game uh and per perhaps those two facts are related uh which brings us to today’s date today is June 9th 2025 which means we are now more than two years past Yasir Alumayan and Jay Monahan appearing on CNBC to announce a framework agreement that has gone absolutely nowhere i think it’s fair to say uh after 2 years we’re no closer to a deal and and it feels like both sides are just on their parallel paths the PGA Tour took some body blows early they’re kind of punching back liv appears content to keep spending money they keep hiring executives and signing new corporate sponsor deals getting new players um and we’re on parallel paths with no real end in sight uh speaking of live golf another walking Neiman win another John Rom top 10 another super low winning score so these are the winning scores on Liv this year and keep in mind these are 54ole events jedha 17 under Adelaide 13 under Hong Kong 18 under Singapore 17 under Miami 6 under Deral is their best tournament it’s that’s their that’s their real tournament that’s not not That’s their best tournament that’s their United States Open that’s their United States Open mexico minus 16 Korea minus 19 Virginia minus15 and this one fell i watched it i don’t know why but this this live event just kind of turned me off a little bit uh and Bamber talked about in his book and again if you want the kind of free promo that Michael Branberger’s getting on today’s show all you got to do is write an incredible book just write the book um but he talked about how he doesn’t he’s not a live guy and he said that on the show and he said the reason is that he feels like pro golf is about the scores and everything else evolved from there whereas Liv is about the fan experiment and it’s experience and it’s about the player experience and it’s it doesn’t feel like it’s that pure meritocratic about the scores and something about another Neman win which doesn’t take anything away he’s won four of eight now uh another super low winning score another kind of mech top 10 from John Rom 21 out of 21 top 10s he’s got on live golf it just didn’t feel like the golf competition was all that discerning does that make sense yeah it’s hard to compare obviously without an extra round in there i guess you can assume that those like 18 unders would get to like 24 under maybe 25 under but they’re also not going to like they’re not playing live events at Oakmont no they’re playing at courses that probably would go lower anyway if they played a Yeah I mean Dorado is by far the hardest course they play at but if you look at like the signature events on the PGA tour it’s like typically it’s Riviera which plays hard it’s it’s um you know they had a Tory Pines this year which played hard challenging courses on purpose memorial plays really difficult you know truest held up it was like a 14 or 15 under yeah at Philly cricket so it just feels like more of the same at live golf it’s another another Neman win another you know between 15 and 20 under winning score um Anthony Kim finished high for 44th his best finished in 19 live events is T29 out of 54 players hasn’t finished in the top half yet in 19 live events i’m curious i wonder what he got what did they pay him i don’t know what they paid him but they didn’t release that it was something uh it was definitely something cuz he had leverage for a little while he was It was like Anthony Kim was shrouded in mystery and was like “Oh is he going to come back to the PJ tour is he going to come back to live golf?” And then it just he got a great deal cuz he got he got the deal he gets to go play golf again all the money well last place in these events is 60 grand so he’s making more than that every week but he also he’s playing so terribly that nobody cares about his comeback anymore even no one’s even talking about Anthony Kim so now he’s just rich and in the shadows which is as good as it gets as good as it gets as good as it gets see that’s the mentality that would have put took your finger your foot off the gas if you sold your company to LVMA oh I was right you never asked me the hypothetical well you would chill i would chill if you if you sold your if you finally accomplished something that you’ve been chasing for a decade i would chill but I would also pick like a a passion project that like the money how successful it was didn’t matter yeah rory’s playing in every national open known to man in the RDER Cup national Open Ryder Cup that’s his next move national Pride i think he might be right cares about Phil Nicholson uh and Liv had a good week tied for fourth uh and and I’m going to leave live all the I’m going to leave the Liv stuff out of this because this is one of the better short game shots you’ll ever see just aesthetically I’m not sure the difficulty level cuz he probably felt he had it in the bag but just from pure sex appeal i mean look at this shot look at this shot phil Phil can actually hit it over his own head times i mean that’s Aura it’s unbelievable and it just went It was It wasn’t like a fluky one where it like rattled the flag stick it landed past it had that spin that you knew was going to come because he hit it basically over his head it was perfect it was perfect also great you got to say great call there on that yeah yeah no Arlo White’s a hell of an announcer arlo White who does the playbyplay for Live Golf he’s was a soccer announcer forever he’s also the voice of Ted Lasso and yeah he’s a really really Oh yeah i hear it yeah yeah he’s awesome uh one more live uh item yell Bayister made his live debuts a top five amateur in the world reigning US amateur uh champion out of Arizona State bit of a pipeline from Arizona State to live golf john Rom Phil Nicholson Paul Casey Matt Jones uh David Pig and now Yel Bay there got a bunch of guaranteed money to join Sergio Garcia’s Fireballs team uh fellow Spaniard tied for 50th in his debut so Anthony Kim beat him uh the Shopright LPGA Classic was won by Jennifer Cupo she will forever be emblazed in my memory because I watched her win the inaugural Augusta National Women’s Amateur and shoot 67 at Augusta which was special legend uh team event on the PGA Tour Champions the American Family Insurance Championship won by Thomas Bjorn and Darren Clark uh Thomas Bjorn does a lot of commentary on PJ Tour Live super nice guy i caught up with him for a while before we did the Creator Classic uh talk and yeah just really enjoyed really enjoyed it uh on the Cornferry tour Austin Smotherman SMURD I believe played a couple years on tour won the BMW charity program one of the bigger events they’ve got amateurs and celebrities in the field and one of those is Grant Horvat uh he played this week YouTube megastar it golfed his ball it seems like I was looking this morning it was pretty hard to understand the leaderboard they had legitimately five different leaderboards so there was the tournament leaderboard then there was two separate celebrity prom leaderboards and then two separate amateur prom leaderboards but I know that I saw a lot of good shots that could be the future of golf tournaments on just eight different leader boards yeah it’s like all these different groups of people that can get in and compete for the PGA Tour starts a leaderboard that’s just not including Scotty Shuffler then we start handing out official winsship for that leaderboard um Grant’s got an invite into the Barracuda Championship i I I from what I gather it seems like he’ll play uh it’ll be fun to watch he’s uh he’s emerged as a a proper superstar on live golf bit of bad injury news saw the Gala uh withdrew from the RBC Canadian Open it’s the second tournament in a few weeks that he has had to withdraw from and it seems like uh his Rder Cup chances are cooked uh he said in the statement that uh the doctors have told him to to put the clubs away for a little while which would make it seem like he’s probably not going to play uh in the United States Open and you know he’s one of these guys that that you you would have said that you played in the President’s Cup last year you would set at the beginning of the year would be you know one of the younger guys that you thought would would earn his way onto this team but golf is not linear and guys uh lose their form i mean look at what’s happened with Max Homa um you know and and and the guy we’re about to bring on next had had an injury problem himself Billy Horchel that’s probably taking him out uh of RDER Cup chances so I hope that Saut gets well i think he’s a one of the one of the more popular players out there because of just he’s just really really unassuming and and really down to earth so he’s got time he’s got he’s got plenty of time but uh just tough tough to to see a guy who’s who’s clearly fighting his body and trying to play and missing cuts and then you and then finally it’s it’s better to just kind of pull the plug and uh and get well soon so we sent our best wishes to Sawy and and I want to thank you one more time to Knockaround for their support presenting sponsor of Dan on Golf uh we love Knockaround we’re going to bring on our first guest today uh and it’s Billy Horchel another guy dealing with an injury right now billy joining us live on the line what’s going on my friend how are we doing we’re doing great so Billy last time we talked uh I named you the unofficial MVP of TGL we talked about wanting to make a push in the majors and get into the radical conversation after you had two top 10s in majors last year so walk us through when you started to feel pain and what led to the decision cuz I texted you after you withdrew I think from Truist and you said “It’s a I think it’s a small thing i think I’ll be okay.” What progressed to to having surgery yeah we just uh it literally just popped up out of nowhere unfortunately um you know I look back you know there’s certain part of the hip that was a little bit tight um and we’re having to sort of release uh you know getting the glute the fire and hip flexor um to release and so as to to sort of do some work in there but um it was right after um where was that uh RBC unfortunately going to Zurich felt it the Monday of Zurich and uh had a withdrawal from Zurich i got some scans done and then um flew out to Colorado uh a couple days later to meet with a specialist out there and um you know he pretty much just laid it in my hands uh could have kept playing uh for a few more months and then maybe postponed the surgery to end of the year um but I just knew going you know seeing other guys do this uh with injuries and seeing you know I had a wrist injury early in my career you know when you have an injury it’s really tough to continue to play at a high level it’s continue it’s tough to continue to to practice and train and do all this at a high level um because at some point in time you’re going to have to not you’re not going to be able to do as much and your results are going to start taking effect and I just felt like you know if you could have said “Hey you can you can play for the next three or four months at a very high level and you’re going to have a chance to make the Ryder Cup team you’ve got a crystal ball.” And told me that then yeah I would have postponed it to the end of the year but um I I felt like it just wasn’t going to be that way and um thankfully got the surgery done about a month ago uh very successful surgery dr phil Pon out in Colorado is is well regarded in in the community um Branson Ed Harris English had a similar type surgery so uh so yeah I mean it it sucks because there’s so many great events and obviously I was really looking forward to trying to make this Ryder Cup team um and play in New York with a crazy crowd and crazy support from the American fans but um you know you got to take care of your body i’m doing this so I can continue to play hopefully at a high level for another five to seven years are you a golf fan like will you will you watch this week or is it too painful to miss it i’ve said it for 16 years I’ve been on tour i probably watch more golf than any other tour player uh on the PJ tour um I watch a ton of DP World Tour i watch a ton of the PJ tour um I watch a little bit of Champions a little bit of the um uh LPJ and and and and I’ve tuned in I’m not going to lie I’ve tuned in a little bit from time to time um for very small snippets of the Live Tour okay um to watch no no I’m not afraid hey I’ve never said a bad word about the live tour in the sense of um you know the players having success out there and um I’ve always just said that you know they’ve when they came on the scene they thought they were the future of golf and and I sort of disputed that i have my opinion of it and that’s what I’ve said but I’ve never you know said any along the lines of “Hey I hope they fail completely.” Um so uh I I think uh yeah I’m a golf fan i love watching golf uh I watch a ton of it i will be on my couch watching a ton of the US Open this week so so yeah I do watch a lot of golf and I and I have watched a lot over the last couple weeks you’re around the same age as Keegan Bradley um he’s playing really really well uh I think he’s right now like the ninth highest ranked he’s a little bit down there in the points but I think he’s the ninth highest ranked American um what would what would your thoughts be on him being a potential playing C like let’s say he finishes eighth in the points he’s got a bit of a a choice on his hand what do you make of the of the situation he’s in i I think you know I think if he’s close to like that number six number I think he’s got to pick himself um and I and I and I’ve told him that um I said “Hey listen the the passion you play with the energy you play with um you know your ability your ability to be a a great teammate and you’ve been in um a successful Ryder Cup team before uh wait was he i can’t remember did he play on the 16 team that won?” I know he played well with Phil i don’t know i don’t know if it was I you know 16 they did win so I’ll look it up yeah so um I think uh he’s been in a successful uh team rooms before um I think you know I I personally said listen if you you need to be make this team and I hope he does pick himself if he is close enough to to make it on the points because he deser I would say he deserves to be on that team and I understand he’s got a lot on his plate and he wants to make sure he’s doing a great job as a captain but I believe that you’ve got great assistant captains in there with Branson Kevin Kisner Jim Furick Web Simpson um I think they can handle the the the blunt uh or the brunt of of everything as a as a captain um that Keegan can handle but I think him playing as being a playing captain would bring more value than just being a captain if he if um if he’s close enough to making that team i wanted to ask you about this tweet so I tweeted I was just sad that there’s been rain early in the week and you commented and you said “Look at 2016.” So I did andrew Landry saw 66 on Thursday dj Sergio Shane Lowry Scott Pierce shot 68 danny Lee Henrik Sensson Kevin Stman Bubba Watson and some amateur named Scotty Sheoffller shot 69 it got tougher throughout the week but did the wetness not contribute to the to the hot start well I think I think if there wasn’t that rain I think the scores wouldn’t have been as what you saw if I remember correctly I think we had a a two three or four hour rain delay on Thursday i think I remember playing 36 holes on Friday um and then I remember on Saturday uh because we weren’t able to finish the first two rounds on Friday you know Saturday’s third round didn’t get finished i had to come back out Saturday morning I believe or Sunday morning and finish my third round and then um te off for the Sunday round later that day so listen it’s rained there before and that’s what I’ve been trying to tell people everyone’s like “Oh man it sucks it’s going to rain it’s going to make this course u play soft and easy.” I’m like “No no no no.” It poured when we were there um you know in 2016 um and the course was getable a little bit early but it did dry out and it still provided an unbelievable challenge and it’s an even longer golf course now so I believe that even if there is a little bit of rain and I think there’s rain today but there’s not rain until the end of the week till the weekend so I think it’s it’s going to be what people want this this isn’t going to be um one of those majors where it it the rain makes it a lot easier and scores and the course doesn’t show its teeth i think the course is going to show its teeth plenty um even if they do get a few few drops of rain well I am rooting for that i’m about to do a whole rant about that i I’ve been talking to I’ve been talking to some Oakmont members and one of them told me that if the winning score is minus 6 or minus 8 they’re going to they’re going to blow up and start over because I mean they’re not actually but so much of Oakmont’s identity is being this test and I wanted to ask you you’ve played US Opens at all of the iconic golf courses basically from difficulty perspective where do you put Oakmont and then also you’ve played in the US Opens where they’ve been renovated uh like I’m thinking about LACC and the Country Club Gilhance renovations where they you know took out trees what are your thoughts on playing golf courses these old school courses that have been newly renovated so I’ll say this um I have always loved the US Open for a multitude of reasons i love it that anyone can have the chance to qualify um obviously if you have a certain handicap um I believe it’s the toughest test in a sense of testing all aspects of your game of golf on a regular basis you got to drive the ball well you got to be a great iron player good could have a good short game that we got to putt well and then just a mental grind of a US Open is is a challenge in itself um and I’ve said some comments in the past you know about Chambers Bay um and I it was more or less the Greens not you know being championship caliber um and what a lot of people don’t know is Mike Davis called me two days later um out of the blue and apologized for the course the Greens not being up to championship caliber conditions and they were aware of that um but I think that US Open you know when we’ve gone to Chambers Bay and Aaron Hills like they were good courses and I liked them i love Chambers Bay the views and the way the course played was cool and the Aaron Hills was a similar situation but it wasn’t what I grew up watching US Open it wasn’t much it wasn’t Oakmont i played the Wingfoot in 2006 as a as as an amateur after I got out of my freshman year and that’s when they did the graduated rough which was awesome but it was still carnage and I feel like the US Open they’ve lost their identity there for a couple years and I told Mike Davis this i said “You guys challenge every aspect of the game when you make driving not a challenge anymore you had the fairways as wide as they were at Chambers Bay you had the fairways as wide as they were at Aaron Hills it doesn’t it doesn’t reward the player who was a great driver of the golf ball it makes everything a little bit easier um for that challenge and you lose your identity of the US Open so going back to these iconic you know traditional US US Open courses even though they may have removed the trees and renovated it if you still have it where driving is is um you still have to drive the ball and you don’t you get penalized for it you got it you know great iron play you got firm fast screens you got all of it you know you just that’s what you need to have and listen I loved LACC i thought that was great but let’s be honest William Clark’s T-shot at 18 at any other US Open is in the deep rough somewhere and he’s got a challenge to try and get up and you know try and make par now um so I’ve always been a fan i grew up that because I watched it for so many years of tight fairways long rough firm fast screens and yes it’s not fun maybe for some people week a year dude correct you’re not seeing a lot of birdies but you’re seeing guys have to grind just a mental grind and stay in it like it’s that is awesome and we don’t see that enough and that’s what the US Open has historically been and I think that’s what you’ve seen has gotten back to over the last couple years like I love Pinehurst but once again Pinehurst you it was you got a 50/50 like a better than well that was that was the issue there was like there was some wayward shots that were totally fine and there were some that were completely cooked correct correct yeah all right my last question for you i have pros on the show and I’ve decided I want to do something new we’re going to call this Give It to Me Straight i’m going to show you my golf swing and you’re just going to tell me what you see don’t hold back let’s play it you can see You can see the screen right i can’t see the screen you’re blacked out for some reason oh well it’s a really beautiful golf swing i’ve seen your swing before well I gave him the best swing I made all week and he doesn’t He can’t text it to me oh yeah i’ll text it to you we’ll get We got a review oh there we go there we go it’s up now okay play it play it again can we play it again rack it rack it here it is you see it now great setup relaxed dan I I’ve seen you swing a club before it’s really good you’ve got a really good golf swing thank you that’s really nice we’re gonna leave it there i say if Now give me give me one one tip one key what I see right away is you’re probably you have a two-way miss you hit you either snipe poke it left or you block it right yes so what you see here is your butt your pelvis comes into the ball yeah and so what happens is you lose that space for your hands to come in you’ve got to feel like when you’re coming down like you’re it’s tough because you got to push your butt back feel like you’re pushing back and rotating so you continue to have that space i need my Genkus move more i need more of that that’s what you’re saying okay yeah you you want to feel like you you your butt doesn’t get your pelvis doesn’t get any closer to the ball than it is at a dress got it stop humping the ball stop humping basically yeah yeah i mean Yes i said it to you other terms and in a in a PG rated yes stop pumping the ball in Rr rated we can use some other language okay so sounds good man well uh I’m bummed I won’t be seeing you this week but uh we got a time table for a return we’ve got a like a loose target yeah you know early spring i mean not early i was going to say are we okay fall okay no no late fall so hopefully in a couple months we we can start chipping and putting here in the next week or so um you know hopefully you know we’re looking at where we want to come back and and how much we want to play so uh yeah so it won’t be um it won’t be in time to play anything on the PJ tour and won’t be able to to play to be able to qualify for a cup uh you may be hot you you you know you you like that place that place has been kind to you in the past you you may be hot on that call so you know we’re just sort of seeing all right well there it is billy Harsh will return to professional golf at the BMW PJ Championship at Wworth well thank you so much Billy we appreciate it my friend thanks guys all the best all right so I want to talk a little bit and Billy got me fired up here and I’m ready to go i want to talk a little bit about the United States Open the tournament that I hold so dear i want this week to be absolute chaos and carnage i want the players to be miserable and maybe a little bit embarrassed maybe just a little bit i want them to get their teeth kicked in and and I get it if I’m a player I don’t want that to be every week doesn’t sound like much fun but for one week a year for the United States Open it’s part of the identity of the tur of the tournament and I’d argue in recent years and Billy argued this too we’ve gotten away from it a little bit in the name of fair setups when you hear fair at a US Open that’s not what you want to hear this really started after 2018 at Shinnik which was the end of a rough run for the USGAA so everyone hated the greens at Chambers Bay in 2015 and then things got a little little too bouncy at Shinnik in 2018 since then the setups have been I’m going to say I’m going to honesty button ready say the setups have been a little on the soft side consider this the last six US Opens the winner has been at least six underpar the combined winning score of the last six US Opens is 47 underpar you know what I think of that utter woke nonsense it’s utter woke nonsense i got Andy we got to get an utter woke nonsense button cuz I wanted to hit the crap out of an utter woke nonsense button 47 under for the last six US Opens is utter woke nonsense and I get it par is a social construct lowest score wins i don’t really care about par 51 weeks of the year but at the United States Open at Oakmont I want to see a plus sign i’m obsessed with plus signs when I when I gamble on the NFL and I’m obsessed with plus signs at the US Open and all the talk this week is making me excited the rough is brutally thick par 3 is playing 300 yards i want it all i’m a little concerned as I said by the by the rain early in the week um but this is you know it’s another Gil Hance renovated golf course hosting a major we’ve seen that recently the country club the winning score was 6 under lcc 10 under not a fan of that US Open i’ve made that very clear um and look I’m going to enjoy the tournament no matter what but if the winning score is 6 under this week something has gone wrong and I’ve spoken as I said to multiple Oakmont members and they’ve said the same thing like they’re the the members told Gil Hans don’t you dare make this golf course easier this is this is part of the identity and it’s the United States Open at Oakmont it’s supposed to be hard let’s get back to it what’s the highest underpar you’ll accept for a winner one one yeah i don’t want to see I don’t want to see four underpar i don’t want to see six underpar this week it’s playing as a par 70 i want the winning score to be 280 or above okay and I think that one week a year and I get it it’s not fun to play in but one of the Did you watch a tennis match on Sunday no I missed it okay it was Yannik Center against uh Carlos Alcarez and they were absolutely battling yeah they went four sets they went five sets it was like 5 hours and something crazy and it was a a battle would those guys say that it was like fun in the moment they’re battling that’s part of the theater i want it to be hard i want these guys to feel and here’s Bryson he he did a video finding the thickest rough on the golf course and and being like I’m going to play this thing i want it all i want it all this week and I just if if if like I said if the winning score is six under par this week I’ll be disappointed i really will and I know there’s rain early in the week but it’s supposed to dry out and I just I want a US Open i want a United States Open i don’t want a US Open you don’t want a US Open i don’t want a US Open i want to return to the United States Open united you know what I mean and uh so hopefully it’s not a fraud US Open now speaking of frauds one of the other reasons I love the US Open is sometimes just goes haywire i mean I remember Zack Johnson uh at Shikok they’ve lost the golf course they’ve lost it it’s gone where’d it go Zach i don’t know but it’s gone you just never quite know what you’re going to get because you know these these courses know they’re hosting the US Open they they typically tweak the course and then it’s you know it’s not like a tour event where they have guys every year and they can dress rehears they usually have like a US amter or something to rehearse but the US Open comes and it’s their one week and it’s a test so we’re going to go through some of the ones that uh maybe didn’t go so well i’m bringing on my friend Alex Meyers myers what’s going on my friend hey what’s up Dan how you doing wow you look great i I think that you you might have the best uh lighting you’re in like a studio i have legit lights in here now yeah hell yeah okay so I hope you brought the receipts like you did when you absolutely sullied uh the great name of Sam Sneed uh we are going back to the receipts are there walk us through some fraudulent US Opens that we’re going to not repeat this week sure yeah I’m I’m ready to uh tick off some old golfers once again with with some of these i have the receipts so look you know I’ve really been watching the US Open since 99 so I’m going to go 25 years back uh I’m going to go through it there’s a few that you know I don’t want to say they’re fraudulent but they’re definitely borderline they’re not the US Open the typical US Open that we know and love right exactly so I’ll start with 2003 and Olympia Fields um that’s one where So here’s I have a a basic rule if more than two players finish better than four under par fraudulent fraudulent Yes too easy just too easy so you had Jim Furick and Steven Leanie furick was 10 under through three rounds steven Weiny was seven under through three rounds uh VK Singh had shot a 20 i mean what are we talking about here yeah it was a it was a joke so um that was that was one for sure jip Bureick ended up winning you know I don’t want to take it away from him he deserved a US Open obviously throughout his career but it’s weird that he won that one considering we consider him such a grinder and that one really wasn’t a grinding US Open uh the following year at Shinnikok 2004 which we all know Shinik is you know maybe along with Oakmont the pre-minent US Open course but this was the original they let the golf course get away from the par 37th right the par 37th the redan hole it was insane it was so bad it was so out of control that on Sunday they were watering in between groups during play I mean just kind of unprecedented stuff but even the day before it was so bad Phil Mickelson uh had a chip that finished above the hole he had a 10-footer for par he said after he was just trying to lag the putt there it went 30 ft past he said he was lucky it didn’t go off the green he actually then made a great two putt from there just to save double bogey and then he got his revenge 14 years later by putting the moving ball exa Exactly so had history at Shinnik no matter what but he ended up losing that US Open to Reten by two shots and you could easily just go to that ridiculous seventh hole tiger Woods even said this is one of the best courses in the world but they let the course get away from them this is not how golf should be played dan can you imagine if golf Twitter was around back then it would have been insane if Scotty Sheffler said this is not how golf should be played yeah things would blow up just absolutely ripping so again it’s unfortunate that happened at Shinikok which is such a a great course but uh yeah that was a tough one so Mickelson kind of got screwed there I think uh 2009 is kind of a weird one beth Paige uh you know and nothing against Beth once again so rainy uh it was it was terrible so many stops and starts and this and that and Ricky Barnes at one point was 11 under par and six shots ahead it was just a weird open and then Lucas Glover ends up winning by two obviously we know he’s a great ball striker it kind of makes sense that if he were to win one it would be a US Open but at the time it was kind of surprising uh Mickelson again another runner up there or Look at those pants what do you think of those white pinstripe pants from Phil they’re skinny too oh I love those pants you like those i wish they were a little looser but I like I like what I’m looking at yeah they looser but yeah I like that a lot they’re like bootcut too look at them that was a choice by Phil right there that was that was nice but yeah just a brutal a Monday finish just not the things you want to happen if you’re running a tournament so I’m throwing 2009 in there as well 2011 Congressional this gets back to just the rule too many guys going low rory Maroy was 10 under before he made the turn on Friday at Congressional i remember being in the media center first US Open exactly it was like TPC Craig Ranch instead of Congressional um I remember being in the media center i think this was the first US Open I covered for Golf Digest people were just laughing he was hitting the ball down the middle the They were laughing the ball was splashing in the fairway again it’s not Congressional’s fault it rained a lot uh the greens you could just see the ball marks flying the when the ball I remember on the 10th hole the par the par three he hit one that spun back with like a five iron Exactly so on on the final round the famous shot he hit one that came all the way back down the tapping range that kind of sealed the deal great shot but again you just don’t see that US Open on Friday on the eighth hole similar hit one 30 feet long spun it back into the hole for an eagle again you just do not see that clown and where’s the clouds where’s the clown it was It was ridiculous absolutely ridiculous again congrats to Rory he won by eight shots not taken away from him but it wasn’t a true US Open test and that’s where he got that whole soft course you know rep is destroying the course for good reason all right 2015 Chambers Bay we all know it was uh Chambers Bay looks by the way amazing i’d love to go there but the Greens were really bumpy they had this POA mixed in with I’m not an eronomist here Dave but I’m I’m trying the California guy and let me tell you something when Po When Poa gets involved it don’t stop getting involved right well apparently though they’ve now switched they ripped up all the greens they’re just all POA now but at the time they were trying to go bent grass which which we northeasterners love but it had the poem mixing in long story short the Greens were insanely bumpy look at everybody has to play it but a US Open we all know you’re going to face so many of those delicate knee knockers the four the five the sixfooters you need the Greens to be absolutely pure or it’s just not fair i don’t think it all came down to Dustin Johnson he had a 15-footer downhill did not hit it hard it ran four feet past and he bricked the comebacker i don’t want to blame DJ i completely blame the Greens for that one it was very unfortunate situation jordan Speed was the beneficiary here but again it was just a tough also that was the I think that was the first US Open on Fox and it was just like it was like Greg Norman was in the booth it was and Joe Buck was on the call it just you know felt a little felt a little college football you know World Series NASCAR no thanks it was it was weird it was a bizarre one uh 2017 I think we kind of differ here Dan uh Aaron Hill is another place I’d love to go i’d love to play i loved watching the women play at the US Open a couple weeks ago but again the scoring I can’t overlook it the board was incredible it was Brooks KCO winning his first US Open so we didn’t really know at the time what a world beater he was going to be xander was in the mix uh you know Tommy Flee was up there shot a 63 which to me was a little shaky because then you know you know called Johnny Miller then had to kind of knock it down a little but anyway too many low scores i think 16 under wound up winning um here’s what was so crazy D the fairways were so wide that Brooks Kepka hit 88% of fairways and he only finished fourth in driving accuracy that’s insane that’s an insane statistic fairways that’s not the US Open we grew up watching Dan and loving you got to hit fairways you got to hit Greens these guys could hit anywhere and they were hitting the fairway so Windom wasn’t in the field yet you know he would have loved that week well we’re we’re getting to that let me just fast forward to that one we’ll throw it in there 2020 it was that that tournament was was a shame and you agree right okay so not only do we have the wide wide fairies at LACC but we have multiple 62s on day one how about there were no humans there they There was no fans there was like 9,000 GA tickets per day it was It was you know like watching a DA baseball game at times exactly that’s my next point low fans low energy um and then again though you could kind of miss anywhere windham Clark that shot on 18 the the fade that he hit quote the slice that’s the same shot from a righty that Phil Mickelson hit in 2006 at Wingfoot bill Mickelson made a double bogey that could have derailed his entire career and obviously has kept him from winning the career grand slam windom Clark made a routine par and one US Open so kind of rare and then you mentioned the low the lack of fans D stand i have to throw 2020 in there uh at Wingfoot because Bryson Deambo won at Wingfoot wingfoot of course a typical a great US Open test but after the 2017 Aaron Hills fairway debacle they went too far the other way everyone missed it everyone missed every fairway you couldn’t hit a fairway and so Bryson just bomb bomb bomb all day long good on him he was smart he read the room he knew what to do he took advantage of of the situation but between that and the no fans that’s a weird one for me uh in terms of that so th those are the ones that I have as as the in the last 25 years kind of the fraudulent ones um I got to hold on to some of these receipts i got some uh extra reward bucks here at CVS like a $5 gift card in there it’s there’s a $4 one and you know CVS they only give you like three days to claim it so I I got to I got to get back over there soon no Oakmont for you this week no I wish and that’s the one place I really want to get to and that to me that that is just the ultimate test and you know with all these Dan we’re talking about we want a tough test but we don’t want it to cross the line i’m okay with it crosses the line just a little bit you do well all right i don’t think Oakmont really does it i mean although I don’t know i heard these the rough this week it looks extremely penal and those ditches look kind of crazy but uh I I’m ready to watch some carnage i’m ready to watch some carnage too we got to we got to do that more often the fraud cottage is the word of the week and fraud watch is just just an electric segment thank you so much Alex that was fantastic you got it Dave the receipts the receipts all right so one of the reasons we like the US Open we talked about this is the qualifiers all the guys who who get through golf’s longest day or maybe they do a qualifier before and and every year there’s some amazing stories with that Ben walk us through today’s blind ranking welcome to this week’s blind rankings sickos um this week we’re doing people who qualified last Monday for the US Open and I want you to rank them in the order you think they’ll finish in the order I think they’ll finish among these 10 men what will the order be that they Okay i thought you were going to say like storyline but I like this better this is a little bit more you don’t know who’s coming next and you don’t know who you already placed above them is it not it’s not the guys that we already highlighted on the social post there’s other guys it’s other It’s I picked 10 of of everybody who qualified i picked people whose names you would know so it wasn’t like a random person fantastic um so let’s get started with a name that’s very familiar mr eric Van Royan is going to go first yeah Eric uh pissed on on the competition not not literally no Yella here but uh in in Columbus he won he was the medalist in a field full of PGA Tour pros uh by six uh finished second to Scotty Sheffler in Texas earlier this year shooting 23 under uh multiple time winner on the PGA Tour i’m going to put Eric Vanroyan at number three feels like a really strong pedigree uh for a you know established tour winner who will be riding high from that performance in final qualifying i’m putting Eric Van Roy number three and he’s playing good golf this year as you said he’s been playing very very solid got Sean Foley as his coach which we’ve been on the show friend of the program friend of the program all right number three Eric Van Roy all right next uh a guy you went to visit in college who’s now playing in the US Open jackson Quinn jackson I think is going to make the cut this week uh I’m putting Jackson Quin uh strong number four oh wow so Jackson is in a unique situation where he’s already locked up his PJ tour card uh he did it in the last week of his sophomore year at Auburn first guy to get it through PJ tour accelerated in two years he’s coming back to school played NCAA finished in the top 10 NCAAs that’s actually what locked up his card went right to golf’s longest day shot 11 under in the Atlanta qualifying site to get through i think this kid’s the real deal he finished like 30 something at Bay Hills so he’s played you know hard courses hits it really straight putts it putts very very well i’m putting Jackson Quivven i’m going to put the A next to his name to to honor the creed of the amateur uh Jack Jackson Quinman comes in at number four the A is for amateur not accelerated yes so he did okay uh someone I know you like very much uh someone you’ve got some past with perhaps one might say mr alistster Dockerty how do you say his first name alistar Dockerty alistister alistister alistister Dockert yeah so Alistar’s got an amazing story we’re going to dive into that later in the show uh know him well from from my Barcel Golf days he’s Barcel Golf sponsored athlete uh missed his PJ tour card by like one shot and got through the North Carolina site he drives it really really really well it hits it and and you know I’ve talked to a couple of his coaches who say that his his game is sort of built for majors i’m putting Alistister at number six i think he’s 36th in the points uh and we’re going to get into the story of his qualification cuz it’s pretty amazing but we’re putting Alistister Dockery Barcel golf at number six alistar sorry I mispronounced your name i read it phonetically okay next up uh Victor Perez victor Perez european i’m going to put him I’m going to put him at number eight victor Perez has won uh some big tournaments in Europe has not won yet in the United States big Frenchman a guy who I feel like is is you know often uh in in the sort of fringe conversation for the Ryder Cup not as much this year the European team is looking extremely solid and especially with like all with with the way the the European tour has gone now you know the the best players in the DP World Tour move over to the PGA Tour and then they prove themselves on the PGA Tour and it feels like those are the guys who get to play in the RDER Cup he hasn’t quite done it i’m putting him number eight feels like a big golf course for him like I don’t know if he You want to see the board okay got the board number eight we got Victor Perez number six Alistair Dockerty number four Jackson Quoven number three Eric Venroy okay um we’re talking about the Deeper World Tour we’ll stay on the train we’re talking about uh the Scandinavian Invasion now yes double N nicholas Norard nicholas Norard i’m putting him number seven uh I believe that Rick had him to make the cut at the US Open and or at the uh PJ Championship didn’t happen but from what I gather he’s a very very good ball striker um I’m putting number seven between Victor Perez and Alistar Dockerty i’m kind of liking Alistister this week now that I look I see his name more and it’s starting to I could feel Alistar having a special week but I’ve already I can’t erase it but I’m I’m feeling something from Alistar coming this week by the way next time you put out We got new graphics on here the numbers are going up next to the names check that out is that Is that good exciting times okay great just this is upgrade to the show fantastic um okay we got a couple really good names okay coming up i love a good name pontis pontis Niholm lanto Griffin lanto it’s pronounced Lonto uh I I love Lonto lonto is a guy I keep in touch with uh he’s married to a corporate attorney i’m married to a corporate attorney so fun fact right there lanto Griffin uh Lanto uh knows how to play a qualifier lonto won uh Q School to get the one PJ tour card through Q school he’s won on the PJ tour before i I believe he he got through I don’t know if he won his qualifier um I’m going to put Lonto at number nine i just want to We still got We still got the top two spots we got 1 two five and 10 open so I hope I have some big names coming you may you may um but before we get to the big names a good name another good name uh another A preston Summer Hayes preston Summer Hayes so he’s made the the US it’s not his first time playing in the US Open i think he won the US Junior to get into his first uh US Open his dad Boyd Summer Hayes longtime PJ tour coach coached Tony Fen for a really long time alo coaches uh Taylor Gu and the Summer Hayes are a golf dynasty daniel Summer Hayes played a lot he finished third in the US Open i don’t remember exactly where at um I know they’re his grandfather’s I think BYU was a BYU coach or they’re a Utah golf dynasty um I’m putting I’m putting Preston at number 10 not because I don’t believe in his abilities but because that’s just where he’s going in the list and he got through he got through the qualifier at uh down the road at Valencia Country Club oh nice he that one yeah what spots do you have left one two and five one two and five okay where you going to put Cam Young cam Young I’m gonna put number one okay now I don’t think he’s going to win the tournament i I don’t but as far as pedigree goes and as as far as like top end ability goes we’ve seen Cameron Young finish in the top 10 and I I want to say five majors already he was second in the 150th Open at St andrews uh had a chance to win the golf tournament last week a a big boy a big boy golf game and this is a big boy golf course again I don’t think he still hasn’t won in the US he’s had a lot of chances i don’t think he’s going to win the tournament but I I can see Cameron Young finishing in the top 10 this week so got through the uh got through a playoff at the Columbus site beat Maxoma Ricky Fowler Eric Cole in the playoff yeah so Cameron Young is playing well it’s It’s been a It’s been a uneven run of form I would say actually pretty poor uh the the golf gambling community will tell you that Cameron Young is like public enemy number one cuz he has all the natural gifts he has the raw ability so people are tempted to bet on him and we’ve seen it before like he’s proved it before but uh he’s starting to turn it around i’m putting him number one actually feel good about that number one grinding out the qualifier playing well in Canada it makes a lot of sense roll right in two spots left uh Mark Leechman is going to have to go somewhere yeah Mark Leeman I’m putting number five um this is I think his first major in a couple years he’s a guy that went to live one won the he did win the their their United States Open he won the one in in Miami um and he’s a six-time winner on the PGA Tour but uh he’s been he’s he’s played the best in in his major career in in the Masters and the Open Championship he lost the playoff in the 2015 Open to Zack Johnson it was Zack Johnson Jordan’s Beef and Mark Leechman um but yeah kind of more of a shot maker i I don’t think a US Open is is you know it’s sort of long and straight um so I’m putting in number five which means we got number two who’s my number two ameiliano Grio is going to be your number two which I I think you did really well here yeah I would have I’m going to keep in my head I’m thinking oh where would I put these guys if but that’s not it’s it’s a blind ranking i haven’t heard much about him this year um he was the rookie of the He’s won on the PJ tour before um and I Yeah he’s I got a weird feeling that he’s going to play well this week i don’t I got a we feeling Alistar is going to play well this week but here’s the list here’s the list okay Mike we got number 10 Preston Summer Hayes number nine Lono Griffin number eight Victor Perez number seven Nicholas Norgard number six Alistair Dockerty number five Mark Leechman number four Jackson Kovven number three Eric Venroyan number two Ameiliano Grio and number one Cameron Young so let’s check back on Monday yeah we’ll check back this is one of those where we can actually it’s it’s a pred it’s a predictive edition um so we can actually we can check we can see how I did speaking of predictions we’re bringing on our guy back Rick Gaming after last week uh he he did us the the generosity of recording a message for us because he couldn’t hop on live on the show which is okay i mentioned that he gets one you know one Mia Copa and that was it but he’s back this week rick Gaiman how are we feeling Rick fellas yeah much much appreciated uh you know flight stuff Dan you know how it goes when you go you have zero control over it it’s it’s horrible but I’m happy to be back on with you boys and obviously this is going to be a stellar week yeah like you you’re back in your space too i feel like we’ve been talking to you recently and you’ve been on the road you’ve been doing the you know the ESPN bet stream but you’re you’re back in your studio now which is why I like to see you all right we got 10 picks because it’s a major week not three like normal 10 picks because it’s a major week start us off with your A tier player and I’m I’m almost wondering if there’s only one A tier player so I got a little creative here i think I jammed two A tier guys into an A and B here but yeah it’s it’s Scotty Shuffler listen um I don’t need to be brave uh Scotty’s the best player in the world i think that his ability to make par from anywhere is going to be incredibly valuable um he will not compound bad shots with mistakes or errors or anything like that and by the time we get to to Sunday afternoon he’ll be in the mix i don’t know if he’s going to win it but he will absolutely be in the mix i’m I’m not um telling you guys anything that you don’t know right now plus 275 though is pretty pretty low odds you don’t see that often for a major okay you you you said it yourself you put your hand up you said I jammed in this next guy we’ll jam him in it’s Bryson D shambo um I’m quite sure this tournament runs through Scotty and Bryson uh you know I’m sure that you guys have talked a lot about this um and and the way that the rough sets up this is such a good comp for Wingsfoot and for a lot of other USGA venues the the big thing that was the biggest correlator um at Wingsfoot was club head speed bryson was swinging at about 125 miles an hour back in 2020 that was the fastest in the world he’s at about 130 right now so he’s actually getting and he’s and he’s minus 30 lbs kind of amazing it’s sick no what he’s what he has been able to do uh putting on the pounds then taking them off but not losing the speed and still getting faster is is incredible um that comes into play in a super helpful way and guys like his last six major championships he’s been in the mix in five of them so and he’s had a chance to win his last six events in worldwide if there’s a major in the United States these days Bryson’s going to have a say i think that this is a way better place for him than Pinehurst was like I just like I I don’t see a path in which unless he just you know um completely goes sideways and something snaps him like I I don’t know how he’s not in the mix on Sunday okay long shot interesting that this guy is being classified as a long shot it’s been an interesting year yes it it’s fascinating year uh it’s Ludvig Goldberg so a couple things here Dan you you mentioned it the the fact that Scotty Sheffler is plus 275 the fact that Rory and Bryson are up there as well it’s creating a lot of value on these guys that are like “Wow Ludvigberg’s 40 to1 in this golf tournament.” Like that’s that’s kind of crazy he’s played like 10 good rounds this year now he’s turned uh four of them into a win and another three of them into a top 10 at the Masters but then the last four that we saw I I thought were a lot more encouraging um he he drove it really well in Canada the the the metrics are coming back and if you just wiped everybody’s you know last 100 rounds or 150 rounds and said who is going to fit um Oakmont Ludvig would probably be in your top four or five options there with his skill set so really excited about um the way that he’s trending and getting a pretty good number on him your your next pick is very interesting to me top former winner yeah so I wanted to get the top rookie market in here that was not available by the time we had to go live so top former winner I thought was interesting as as kind of a hedge off of um somebody like a Bryson Dshambo and it’s Jordan Speak 14 to1 for Jordan Spe to beat out the past former champions he is fast now he is Yeah he’s gone a lot longer huh a lot longer um his short game the putter has has returned to him we’re basically getting the best version of Jordan Speed that we have in any of the last three years maybe that was a low bar for him but he has kept all the good stuff from 2024 he’s starting to find the the good stuff from like 2021 and it’s creating this kind of super version of of speed right now that I think is very very dangerous at this event you got an interesting miscut bet i You are braver than I because this guy still scares the crap out of me he doesn’t scare me anymore it’s Brooks Kepka uh it’s all for show this attitude that he’s got although he does I mean I’ve seen him hit some shots at major championships that I’ve never seen anybody else hit but um so he wins at Oak at Oakhill uh then he finishes what T17 I believe at the major immediately following that’s his best finish since then he he has not been good at major championships over the last couple of years he’s struggling to find any level of consistency around the globe when I got eyes on him at the PGA Championship he was on the driving range the entire week he when he’s playing his best he shows up he hits 30 shots he goes out and he shoots 68 just grinding grinding so yeah getting a little bit of plus money on Brooksie to uh fail to make the weekend okay winning score i’ll kiss you on the mouth for this bet it’s over 278 and a half it better be over 280 and a half so yeah so that is uh one under we would win on this even par we would win on this and then obviously anything worse than that we would win on this um Dan I’ve done a lot of uh nerdy stat stuff on hundreds of golf courses and I’ve looked a lot of satellite imagery and like all that fun stuff this is like the hardest course I’ve ever seen i I don’t I don’t know how they’re going to break par out here i mean there’s just so many ways to get in trouble and there’s not a lot of ways like I think Quail Hollow is a really good example you know we saw that the longest guys could carry some spots and it would get them an extra 30 or 40 yards and then you could separate there i don’t see that here i don’t know how these guys are going to deal with potentially that thick rough the length of this golf course and the greens running at basically a 15 it it is going to be I think it’s going to be carnage and I do not use that word lightly yeah and I think one of the big differences between this and between Wingfoot is Wingfoot you could run it up on every green there’s like there was a little bit of a of a corridor and there’s so many highlights of Bryson hitting it in the rough and then kind of musling out a wedge and just keeping it online and having it run through that’s not going to be the case this week and Wingsoot Wingsoot was I mean September like the rough was thick but it like this is going to be nasty in the summer oh it’s brutal yeah okay give us a matchup yeah so going back to Ludvig here over Justin Thomas um we’ve already talked about what I like about Ludvig uh the things that I don’t like about Justin Thomas are the way that he sprays it off the tea the way that he is going to probably try to put uh the pedal down on Thursday or Friday which has been backfiring on him at major championships i don’t know if it is mental but he’s missed more cuts than he’s made since his win at Southern Hills in major championships this is a golf course that um for his skill set he’s going to have to play out of the fairway and I don’t see him playing out of the fairway very frequently so I think I think I think Ludvig uh clips him here how about the This is a I just got researching since the start of 2023 these are JT stats in the majors or not stats but finishes miscut T65 miscut miscut miscut T8 at the PGA miscut T31 T36 miscut so it hasn’t been pretty in the majors uh at all okay another prop bet top lefty yes top lefty um so there’s seven or eight of them and I’m going with Aay Patilla here who is uh plus 320 so you’re getting a little bit of a of a decent number on him robert McIntyre I believe is the favorite in this group and uh Ash has started so he went through a mini slump and he has really started to come out of it we’re seeing him drive it well again we’re seeing the putter return i love the skill set of this guy obviously just being um still so young and having having um US Open experience already under his belt i I think there’s there is a path for him you know I don’t think he’s going to contend to win this golf tournament he doesn’t have to to be the top lefty and I like the way that we are catching him on an upswing at the moment give us a top 10 bet another guy who’s somewhat forgotten right now yeah otto top 10 at a major championship on Xander Schoffley i think he’s done it in 50% of the major championships in his career we’ve talked about how much longer he is now than he’s ever been before and um when you give these guys really difficult conditions that benefit the most well-rounded players in the world and the guys that can ball strike it like Xander’s there xander does not make a lot of bogeies um Scotty Sheffler doesn’t make a lot of bogies tommy Fleetwood doesn’t make a lot of bogies right these guys that are super well-rounded are really really good when bogey avoidance becomes one of the key stats um decent lag putter we’re starting to see that stuff come back more into play for for Xander i’m I’m I’m in on on X of course and then we’re riding a little bit of a hot hand here with our last one a top 20 bet agreed it’s Sam Burns and I want to point out this is more than just one week um he has been putting this together for like five weeks right he he has really started to turn the ball striking around at his best form we talked about Jordan Speed getting back to his best version sam Burn’s best version is an approach and putting guy who is long enough off the tea we’re getting that now picked up in all four major strokes game categories at the Canadian Open as you can imagine probably should have won that golf tournament but you go out you shoot a 62 on Sunday i can’t beat you up too much on that so he has put together probably five really good starts in a row they’ve been trending upwards they’ve been getting better uh I believe his last major championship is his best major championship finish so he’s been starting to play better in majors as of late so yeah we’re we’re riding a hot hand but this is not a oneweek heater this is basically a five really good weeks of Sam Burns i love it i’m feeling good about this week i’m also I want to congratulate you you uh you stayed away from Patrick Klay so nice job i did yes i uh I know that was probably really hard for you i’ve muted his name on on Twitter i’ve reached out to every sports book and I said just hide him from me don’t let me click it b like selfban on Patrick Kentlay for the foreseeable future awesome good stuff Rick uh we’ll talk to you soon fellas take care guys see you all right guys a quick break from the tour talk for a second because if you’re into golf podcast and you’re you got to be you’re here you’re watching this one maybe you’re listening i got a new one it’s called Invested in the Game it’s an original podcast from Charles Schwab now when I heard this I was like Schwab the investing guys i got that app on my phone Schwab but it’s not about golf why are they doing a golf podcast it’s a fair question turns out they’re already doing five other podcasts which as expected are in the marketing market and investing space all really solid listens but this new one it’s a little different they wanted to branch out get into the personal passions of their clients because even the most hardcore investors have lives outside of trading platforms and balance sheets and one of those passions is golf big time golf has always been near and dear to Schwab and their clients schwab has supported the game for years through events promotions and sponsorships at both the professional and collegiate level and now they’re telling the stories behind the game the stories of people who have poured their time energy money and their hearts into golf the stories that remind us why we all keep coming back despite despite the snap hooks flubs and three putts you’ll hear guests like Annie Johnson from Friday Golf and Doie Pepper from CBS again it’s called Invested in the Game from Charles Schwab check it out at schwab.com/thegame or wherever you get your podcasts podcast supporting other podcasts i love it good stuff from from Charles Schwab our dog of the week that is a a play on words for Dan on Golf welcome to the show it’s Alistister Dockerty it’s big Al so I know Al from from our Bar Stool days i think he’s the only still um professional golfer that is sponsored by Bar Stol Golf he has a a really personal uh deep friendship with Rigs rigs helped him wrote him I think a $50,000 check to keep his career going when he was really struggling for money and he was cattying uh in in Scottsdale and and he’s had you know a breakthrough he’s got his Cornferry card he missed getting his PJ tour card by one shot at Cornferry finals he’s 36 in the points on KFT right now so now it’s down only 20 get their tour card so it’s going to be a competitive sprint to the finish so he had a horrible car accident right before a couple days before the qualifier that was not his fault you can see the picture here that car is messed up and he said that the minivan saved his life he got t-boned he took a few days off and got through the North Carolina site shooting 64 this will be his first major championship appearance he’s 31 years old he was an alternate I I think it was at Pebble Beach in 2019 and didn’t get to play you want to talk about an alltime cuck situation you’re you’re the you’re you’re the first alternate or one of the alternates at at the US Open at Pebble Beach and you fly all the way out to California and you don’t get to play that’s that’s about as close as you can be then you miss your card by a stroke like this guy’s been sitting on the doorstep waiting he’s been sitting on the doorstep and he’s got a chance this week at Oakmont um it it gives you it gives you goosebumps uh I’m really looking forward to seeing Al uh at Oakmont and uh like I said earlier in the show he he’s got all the tools he hits it really he’s not going to be overpowered by this golf course so uh really looking forward to watching Allan this week yeah go off he’s our dog of the week uh do we make it in time for Allen do we got Allan we have a live question okay we got a live question where is Allen is he coming okay all right here’s our live question we’re breaking the fourth wall here we’re breaking the I think we should do this live question and then we do chirps and then we’ll come back to Allan you got it okay great all right our live question seeing how the sausage gets made somebody originally from New Jersey would love to know how you would feel about Pine Valley hosting a US Open at some point i would feel amazing question i would feel amazing it’s definitely hard enough so I um I got a a story about Pine Valley yeah tell me so my uh my old boss at Golf Digest Jerry Tardy he’s a member there and uh it was always kind of a thing at Golf D like “Are you going to get the look are you going to get the look to to play Pine Valley?” And I remember it was a Thursday and I was sitting in my uh Brooklyn apartment with my wife and I got an email and the email said uh “Hey Dan can you meet me at Pine Valley tomorrow at noon we’ll play golf we’ll drink whiskey we’ll stay over we’ll play golf in the morning and we’ll be back by Saturday at lunch.” And I had plans with Emma and I said “You know what Emma I love you dearly.” I said “There are certain emails that pop into your inbox that you just kind of have to say yes to.” And so I I said yes i went there and as we’re we’re warming up he says “You know I’ve I’ve had this longtime bet with Phil Mickelson i played this course with Phil Mickelson a lot of times and we always had a bet that he couldn’t play the golf course without making a double bogey.” And you know we played a bunch of times and he finally beat me but he for the longest time he goes “Dan we’re going to have that bet today.” I go “Jerry it’s Phil Mickelson.” Correct right i’m I’m not Phil Mickelson he said “You know we don’t have to put money on it just first hole is a a tough T- shot there’s also a sign that says no mulligans oh yeah that’s right so it’s a tough T-shot it’s a dog like right there’s bunkers i hit a 3-wood through the fairway into the bunkers and I’m thinking do I play defense already on this bet do I just wedge it out nope hit an eight iron plugged into the lip made a seven the bet was over on the first hole bet was over on the first hole i got my revenge i played really good in the second round i think I was like two over going to 18 i made like an eight um so that’s a tricky bet actually that feels like it’s a trick on his part to get his guest to play that against them cuz then immediately you’re in your head on the first on the first hole i mean I was so I was nervous it was my boss at the time it’s Pine Valley you know it’s one of those golf courses that it’s just it’s you immediately have to make a decision am I playing for the bet all day or am I playing for a score yeah so it was uh I I would feel great i don’t I don’t think they would do it um it’s just you know the US Open you got to turn your course over to the USGA for a while you know they these golf tournaments are big businesses now they’ve got massive tents like Pine Valley the the footprint is probably too big but uh the Crumb Cup is there every year uh which is an elite kind of midame tournament um so if you want to watch guys play Pine Valley competition they’re not it’s not Bryson Shambo and Scotty Sheffler but you can go play it i would feel great about it but I don’t It’s like when Allan talks a lot about having a tournament at like Pacific Dunes or Bandon Dunes like I just don’t know if that’s actually feasible it’d be great but I don’t know if it’s feasible let’s get his opinion okay allan Shipnok fresh off of uh off soccer practice was it soccer practice dude no a sport where you can use your hands basketball come on was that was like a shot at soccer soccer’s lame now yes barry okay um we’re going to do Ask Allen and Dan uh but it’s really an Ask Allen this is you know I grew up reading Ask Allen all the time is the the the OG advice column not advice column it’s sort of Q&A uh we’re going to start with a guy we all know very well Laz how do you pronounce LZ’s last name versas uh Allan is it an oversimplification to say that appearance fees would solve a lot of issues for the PGA tour i feel like it would create more issues that’s what I think i mean there’s already this halves and have nots of the tour schedule and so the purse at the elevated events is $20 million do you need to add an appearance fee to that and you know the tours had appearance fees for a long time just they was they weren’t called that but it was like “Hey come to the sponsor would say “Come to our cocktail party uh meet and greet sponsors and we’ll give you a an envelope for that.” And sometimes those envelopes had big checks and that wasn’t an appearance fee that was that was uh you know fell under a a mini endorsement deal or or some other nomclature um but you know guys were getting six figures to come to a cocktail party and so it’s I don’t think that and that didn’t really solve anything you still had players you know skip big events you still had uh tournaments with very few stars so um the sponsors are already being asked to put in so much to fund the purse do they want to have to have a slush fund of another three or four negotiate with agent sounds like a nightmare to be honest with you it’s a nightmare i think between the FedEx Cup the AON rewards all these other programs there’s so much money available if guys want to play a tournament they’re just going to play a tournament and if not they’re I don’t I don’t think an appearance fee is going to change that yeah fair enough okay I’ll start with this next one from Ryan Stimson what golf courses are you excited to play this year in your travels well we have officially Ben crossed the It’s less than 1 month until I leave for Ireland for this trip that I’ve been talking about non-stop going with my dad and two of my best friends our lineup is Port Marik Bali Bunion La Hinch Dunebeg Waterville Hogs Head and The Island so any of I I’d say probably the first I mean we’re starting with Port Maric Valley Bunning and La Hinch which I think are really I’ve never been to Ireland so maybe you can tell me what what the best is on on that list Allan but I would say my my Ireland trip has kept me going throughout the whole summer well to me Lehinch is the perfect golf course it’s just quirky fun lot of halfpar holes uh you’ve got blind shots you have views you have heaving dunes i mean I dream about Leah Hinge it’s definitely my favorite course on the entire island what do you got you got anything planned so there was a time when on the golf uh magazine world top 100 I’d played 16 of the top 17 the one I was missing was Oakmont i still have yet to play it so I’m I think I’m going to bring my sticks and try and sneak on to the Monday media day even though I don’t really want to play in US Open conditions but just get my teeth kicked in but I feel like I My first US Open I ever covered was Oakmont in ‘ 94 it’s a special place to me it’s just the quintessential do you know what happened in 1994 do I know what happened it was Arie’s last US Open first day on the planet was in December of 1994 right that that’s what I meant two important things happened arie retired from competitive golf and you pass torch pass the torch wait I didn’t know they did a media day for the US Open it’s only It’s ballers only sh yeah yeah ballers only monday only it’s I mean cuz they have to reserve the course in case of a playoff if there’s no playoff the USJ owns a course they let a bunch of schmucks go out there and play so you would probably qualify am I automatically entered in it no you’re not damn it’s one of those things where you have to ask you might not be you know what I mean yeah you just you got the book i played I played one major course uh the day after i played uh I played Royal St george’s right after Colin won in 2021 you talk about quirky that golf you got to you have no idea where you’re going on that golf course unless you’ve seen it yeah no that’s one of my favorite courses in England and even in the whole Roa because that’s what I like you know when when guys say “Oh the golf course is right there in front of you that’s a favorite tiger rory’s adopted it.” That’s boring man like give me give me quirk yeah i want to have to look for it okay i’m going to start with you on this one we talked a little bit about Oakmont uh Steve Thompson asks “Where does Oakmont rate on the list of courses to host the US Open?” Oh top of the list it’s just so macho it’s so hard it’s a sick word for this week yeah it’s just relentless it has the rich pedigree um it’s more artful and interesting than Wingfoot which would probably be number two on that list um just as far as aura um I think in the modern game Piners might be the best test because unless the course is 9,000 yards or even 10 it’s not long enough for the tour players anymore so you need different defenses and baked out Pinehurst greens are kind of the ultimate defense so I love Pinehurst as an open venue i have no desire to ever play it again it’s like the least fun golf course in the world it’s so stressful but um for for tournament play it’s spectacular but I to me it’s Oakmont fair okay I’ll start with the next one and I want to hear your your take on this lucas Parencia asked “Is Brooks Kepka’s career officially in a dead end if or not why is five times major champion struggling so much lately i’m I’m I don’t think we’ve seen the end of Brooks he’s 35 and I I think that Rory drawing even with him in terms of five majors a piece and then also Rory leaprogging him and in all of our sort of collective lists because Brooks has only won the US Open and two US Opens and three PGAs where Rory’s done the career grand slam i feel like that’s got a lot of light a fire with him and for Brooks the the question’s always been motivation and I just can’t imagine that he likes seeing that right and you know people want to use him as an example that Liv is has is doled his edge but the fact is Brooks was never a dominant player on the PGA Tour you know week to week he it was he had a lot of indifferent results and um nothing’s really changed i mean it’s just he’s not raising his game those four weeks a year consistently um but I agree he’s always going to be dangerous i mean he just hits in the middle of the club face every single time um Brooks is the end of Brooks is not here but um you know now that he has a kid and all these things like how how hard does he want to chase it i mean that’s the ultimate question but you got to assume he’s going to be there a few more times luke Mather asks we’ll start with you on here why is nothing engulfed named Tiger no bridge or tree or any is that kind of one of those where you got to get a little bit older for that to happen i think so yeah i mean the bridges the water fountain i love that Jack Nicholas got a water fountain at Augusta National like the dudes won it six times they already they’d already named the bridges they had they had the Eisenhower tree what are we going to do for Jack uh how about a water fountain i mean it could have been worse could have been a latrine but um you know what are you going to give T there’s I mean I’ll tell you what they they what they should do cuz I had this idea i don’t know watch they should change the logo the PGA Tour logo to Tiger with the fist pump that would be that would be iconic and for what Tiger’s done for the tour and also him continuing to you know be involved and moving in the future i think you know Jerry West is the logo in NBA i think it’d be pretty cool if Tiger Woods was the logo for the PGA Tour it’s time to change that one too i would say what the NBA one um I like that i love that uh don’t mess with the NBA though it’s so iconic but I agree mr basketball Allen Shipnucks soccer is for guys with feet you don’t want to put Kobe on there Alan come on tell everybody right now you wouldn’t want to put Kobe on that logo this just took a left turn um you’re gonna put Kobe over Jordan as the logo wow okay next one do you think Tiger could get one more tour win to officially pass Sneed i know he unofficially has would a team event count well Sneed’s record is as Alex Myers systematically dis de like just destroy dismantled it that was the word I was looking for i got an idea for Scotty Sheffller and it’s not an original idea i can’t remember who said it the name that pops to my mind is Brenley Roman but I can’t remember scotty should team up with Tiger in Zurich and then just put him on his back to You want to talk about Yeah you want to talk about legacy you want to talk about a legacy builder oh I’m Scotty Sheffer i’ve won all these tournaments i got Tiger Woods’s 83rd win you’re welcome that’s that’s that’s genius um I mean can Tiger walk you know 30 miles in four days which is basically what tournament golf is let not even talking about the the practice round like that’s the question right i mean really we’re we’re what 6 months away from Tiger turning 50 so it’s going to be interesting to see if he’ll play senior golf in a cart right he’s always been disdainful of of of a cart on on the PGA tour but on the senior tour where it’s just a regular part of the competition that’s going to be fascinating because if you know Tiger at the Senior Open at the Senior British like some on some great venues that that to me is a more interesting question because I just don’t think he can physically take the time to to prepare for a golf tournament get his game sharp and then walk all those miles so I think the answer is is no i don’t I don’t think he’s going to ever do it on Scotty is feeling charitable and then the answer is probably yes okay next one i mean Tiger still has to drag his dead leg around like I don’t know like can he do that you’re talking about it like it’s you know you know the stanky leg like you know one of those guys in Nom who’s just like we don’t really get around that leg you know it smells kind of bad okay yeah mike Mike Ditka’s bad hip uh speaking of old men uh would you who would you pick to win at the US Open and the number of US majors they’ve already p basically who would be most likely to win a US Open patrick Kentlay Tony Feno Ricky Fowler i’ll take Tony Feno in that group just cuz Patrick Can we don’t I thought we weren’t going to talk about him today uh and and Ricky Fowler I’m not seeing it tony Feno has you know there was a period of time there kind of between 2018 and 2020ish when he was a a mainstay in top 10s and his ball striking is just as good as it was then he’s just he’s putting really poorly i want Tony Fenino to blow it up i want to see like some left-hand low lab putter you know i I want to see do something adventurous because it’s not working right now i could see Patrick Reed uh winning at Pebble Beach if it was really firm and fast you know it’s a short ballpark and it’s really just about precision with your irons and short game oakmont is just too big and too tough and um off the tea and you can have a lot of long irons which is not really Reed’s forte um he’s very venue specific you know Ricky I mean when was the last time you contended in a major it’s like um so I I I agree 2023 US Open LAC shot 62 he was in the he was up there in the end yeah that’s true and that So yeah I but I think um I like your phenile pick by default but again like are you going to find your putting stroke on Oakmont Greens when they’re rolling 18 on the stimp and it’s straight downhill for everything like kind of doubt it okay Emperado also Patrick Reed I think we were talking about Patrick Cantlin there but I I appreciate the insight on Patrick Reed was fantastic neither of them is going to win this neither of them is going to win this week okay I’m going to ask you this Alan emperado Turtle asks “With Nean on such a dominant role or run?” I think he probably meant run oh no roll r O L not R O L E okay why hasn’t Liv booked a South American date yet weather and time zone friendly beautiful landscapes and the last bastion of unexplored golf market available yeah it’s just economics i mean there they can get a lot more to go to a golf mad country like Korea or Japan um you know Chile is not a hotbed of of golf i don’t know how much corporate support they’re going to get there i mean that’s just the simple answer i mean they are trying to run a business but um you know I mean they they’ve gone to Mexico which is uh the people don’t turn out though people don’t turn out and that’s kind of what I what I was going to say was like we we talk about oh it’d be great if they had a tournament here but then they bring a tournament there and then no one goes and they get trolled and it does a terrible number so it’s one of those things where yeah it sounds great to go to all these different countries but it has to make sense dollars and cents wise yeah you going to fly to Brazil for a PJ tournament yeah there you go i mean it it would be wonderful and I mean credit to to Wain he’s been on such a heater but uh I was sitting next to you Dan at the at the PGA and watching Nean you know he was like 12th and then he’d make a bogey he’d go to 17th and then he’d make a birdie and he’s 11th like can can can walk get a top 15 it was like such a subplot i mean I don’t know how much you’ve talked about already on the show but um Well he’s got he’s got a top he finished tied for eighth yeah exactly so that was like a whole thing like oh it’s a breakthrough even though he never contended but at least he’s he’s he’s showing some form in the major suddenly all right last one i know you were kind of sniffing around this story when we were at uh when we were at Quil Hollow he won the major the last time it was at he won the United States Open at Oakmont in 2016 brock asks “Has DJ ever really loved golf?” That’s deep that’s a great question that’s so deep looking into his soul i mean when he was when he was a kid he was playing you know eight days a week like he was chasing it hard i think there was a period when he was on the come up that he really did love golf cuz I don’t think I don’t think you can get to that level without a certain love affair with the game now I mean he’s just going through the motions but um I want to say the answer was yes um at a point but it was funny cuz I was I have a big story on um on Hell Cabrera that’s going to drop on Scratch.golf golf tomorrow on Tuesday and I was I was interviewing Brandell Shambbley about it and he you know Cabrera is such a flusher and he just he’s just such a natural and he and Brandle was talking about Cabrera but I think it applies to DJ like he was referencing in um Goodwill Hunting like do you know how easy this is for me like I think I think DJ got to a point where it was just he got a little bored he had all the the success he had all the spoils and um Liv accelerated that that sense of h I’ll just turn up and if I have a hot week great and if not no big deal and so yeah love affair is over you said uh something there of you don’t get to be at this level in golf without loving it that’s exactly what Price Cahill said in uh the first episode of Stick which I got to say really good did you have you have you watched it so far uh it’s on my to-do list by it’s it’s a fantastic show watch on your way to Pittsburgh it’s it’s it’s even without the golf well Owen Wilson is just so A-list it’s a classic you could just they could have a camera on Owen Wilson watching something and you you know what I mean he’s just got this such an emotive face with the nose and the whole thing but um it’s good golf like it’s just a good TV show you know what Alan let’s watch it this week together at Oakmont uh okay that sounds I’m not going to say yeah I would I can’t wait that sounds great i’m super strange what a strange appearance from today boys together let’s do it i was going to say something totally inappropriate and I caught myself that’s that’s the growth moment for me but yeah we will watch it in the press room together i can’t wait i’m I’m looking forward to seeing you allan’s going to be on our shows we’re doing we’re doing live shows uh Wednesday and Thursday from Oakmont we’ll see you there Alan great stuff i look forward to it all right boys from the gallery great week uh we’re going to start with the dentist Matt Vote who qualified for the US Open in Washington i don’t know if this is real but you know when when something happens people dig up the receipts and and Scotty Holdridge says you know not to be that guy but the quote unquote dentist playing in the US Open overcharged my nana for a filling and so we got a second opinion and turns out she didn’t even need the filling in the first place i don’t think that that’s true i don’t think that’s true i don’t want to sell Matt Vot’s good name i think this is pro if I’m reading this charitably it was like a you know a galaxy brain joke about digging up people’s past it’s either a really good galaxy brain joke or it’s hilariously true it’s it’s it’s good either way good either way uh all right next we got a fellow here who’s got a list about the best events in golf uh the Open the Masters the Walker Cup 1 two three the US Open the United States Open number four i disagree it’s number one for me us Amter number five number six US Mid Amter number seven RDER Cup number eight Seminal Pro member number nine NCA D1 Championship number 10 Crump Cup which we talked about today which is at which is at Pine Valley he’s got two asterisk though there’s an asterisk on the US Open and the asterisk on the RDER Cup why that’s where we go to the next slide oh you we Oh well the a I know the asterisk the number four it says the US Open asterisk when it’s not at Tory Pines and number seven the Ryder Cup when the US wins so two uh hypersp specific versions uh I would I would change it around i’ I’d have the United States Open number one i’d have the RDER Cup number two i’d have the Masters number three and then I haven’t figured out the rest of the list but that’s those are my those are my top ones okay cutting grass by hand i’m digging in oh man this is cutting grass by hand this is Christian Pulysick cutting grass by hand in a totally unrelated Puma commercial now we posted the clip of me saying you know Gabby saying they’re cutting grass by hand with a bunch of mowers at Oakmont and I you know I got the short end of that stick this is where we said you know they’re cutting grass by hand i would disagree with the mot there i I expected to see something more similar to Christian Pulisic uh cutting grass with scissors that’s what I was picturing too so it’s you know maybe this is an echo chamber here we’ll carry have you watched the rehearsal not yet oh man you haven’t watched the rehearsal we finished it last night i was going to say there’s there’s a communication breakdown going on here uh okay next uh this was a comment on uh YouTube that one of my my lovely friends sent to me it says “Dan reminds me of a former cracked addict.” Sorry I’m I’m going to read that again dan reminds me of a former crack addict that has now found the game of golf and a reason to stop doing drugs i’m going to hit the honesty button right here ready never done crack never done crack never done crack never done crack i’ve exper I’ve experimented in my day never done crack uh and then someone responded saying the Will Wilcox so I’ve got Will Wilcox and I are really good friends so I take that as a compliment and also he’s doing really well now and he’s catting in the US Open this week so and also I’ve never done crack okay a lot of Americana vibes this week you know United States Open ben actually submitted this one talking about the European mind and why it might struggle with a week like this the European mind cannot comprehend this level of freedom this guy is chipping a steak onto a grill and it looks absolutely fantastic i want to try this so bad yeah you got to clean my mom’s house while we’re in Pittsburgh and we’ll try it are we going to your mom’s house you can you can come over anytime well I can yeah if you want to all right we’re going Tuesday night mom Dan’s coming dan’s coming uh Chris Powers on Rory can’t miss stuff can’t miss stuff when Chris Powers tweets about Rory Maroy this was uh this is from the Canadian Open rory shot 40 on the front nine and then went bogey double bogey bogey 10 11 13 but he made a birdie on 15 and CP says that’s what this is that’s what keeps you coming back ass scorecard that’s 100% right you know you’re you’re eight over par through 13 but you birdie 15 you’re like man that felt pretty good don’t see that very often from uh from the world’s second best player at least number two in the world rankings phil Mickelson there was a bunch of there was a bunch of stoppages uh on live golf this week for Rain and he said right before they started playing again restarting in 10 minutes with a three foot birdie putt to tie for the lead i don’t know how it’ll all play out but this is so much fun i like uh mid round tweets this is good Phil this is good Phil there was a bunch of good Phil this week phil’s there’s still there’s a ton of good left there uh and then we’re going to finish it with Kenny Kim’s uh recap of his weekend i actually you know we we um we kind of we kind of we kind of break uh convention on the show we curse and all this stuff i I couldn’t bring myself to show what Kenny Kim did this weekend but you should all see it twitter just go to his Twitter this is uh this is the recap of Kenny Kim at the Canadian Open this is one of the other reasons I was very disappointed about not going to Canada was I missed Kenny Kim on our hangout he said “I feel like absolute what a great weekend.” Go on Kenny Kim’s uh Twitter and and he had a Michelin star meal that looked baller tweeted out through the whole thing he was ripping cigarettes inside i think it was it was uh it was a big week for Kenny high low brilliance from Kenny yeah I’m going to need we’re going to need Kenny on the show pretty soon we’re going to leave you with the clip of the week this happened right after uh last week’s stand on golf it was the longest day in golf and Max showed up i guess he’s between caddies again uh the guy he went to Bill Harky after uh splitting with Joe Griner his longtime caddy that didn’t work out he’s so he he hoofed it he he walked himself for 36 holes at the US Open ended up playing 37 or 38 holes because there was a playoff lost in a playoff to Cameron Young uh but then stuck around to sign autographs and that’s that’s good stuff that’s good stuff you know we can take the piss out of all the change he’s made and you know the onfield results but at the end of the day there’s you know there are kids out there who are going to remember that he stayed around to sign autographs so we’re going to leave you with our clip of the week and uh we’ll see you in Oakmont i’m going to remind you again we’ve got a show we got Dan on Golf from the studio today we’re Ben and I are both headed to Oakmont right after this show we’re getting to Pittsburgh then we’re doing shows live from Oakmont on Wednesday and Thursday travel day on Friday and then I will be back in the doghouse at my home studio Saturday and Sunday delivering all the content for you guys like and Wasn't expecting to see Big Sean Dyche on a US Open preview pod but here we are
Ryan and Sam proved that its hard to win on the pga tour. I think there was some embrassement by the rules official cause Ryan and Sam played 18 smart with the water guiding the front green. LOL! The watch along with funny. Seeing Dan's reaction every time Sam ducked a bullet. Then, I was glad Dan stayed for the playoff. His reactions were hilarious every time the playoff was extended. I could tell Ryan was under pressure. He techincally wasnt in the US Open even though he won Myrtle Beach. This win got Ryan to 28th in the fed ex cup standings. He is clearly in the playoffs but doesnt have east lake locked down yet. Trevor called it a pillow fight cause Sam Burns was clearly expected to win cause he is a superstar who is good friends with Scottie Schieffler. LOL! Rick Gehman's segment was funny. You can tell Dan wants carnage when Rick used the winning score bet and we saw Dans reactions.
