Scottie Scheffler gave us a masterclass at the PGA Championship and Thursday sees the third Major of the year – the US Open.
The tournament returns to Oakmont in Pennsylvania for the 10th time and is a tough test. It features thick rough if you stray off the fairway, more than 170 bunkers and lightning-fast greens.
Finding fairways will be massively important. Imagination around the greens and a strong short game will be essential.
Scottie Scheffler is a short price, Rory McIlroy was all at sea in Canada last week and I can’t side with Bryson Dechambeau. I prefer to take my chances at bigger odds.
1. Jon Rahm
I will start with Jon Rahm.
In the two most recent editions of the US Open played at Oakmont, there has been a strong international contingent on the final leaderboards with form on links courses seemingly translating well to Oakmont’s test. With three top 10s in his last four Open starts, Rahm certainly fits that bill.
The Spaniard struggled in the Majors last year after his move to LIV, however after a 14th place at Augusta he was right in the hunt at the PGA before dropping back to eighth on the final couple of holes.
Interestingly the last two winners here both had e a Green Jacket to their name. The 2023 Masters champion looks to have the perfect long and short game combination to add his name to that list. Arriving on the back of another top 10 at LIV last week, he gets my vote.
2. Shane Lowry
I can’t ignore the obvious credentials of Shane Lowry. Those with long memories may remember that Lowry was the 54 hole leader here in 2016 before struggling on the final day.
His combination of elite ball striking (he currently ranks second on tour from tee to green) and excellent touch around the greens, make him an ideal candidate to thrive at this venue.
The concern is that for a player who contends as much as he does, he struggles to convert his opportunities to wins. On a course we know should suit, I’m happy to risk that the Irishman can get his putter to co-operate when it matters most and finally land another big title to add to his Open Championship.
3. Jordan Spieth
When looking for a player with pedigree on links courses, a strong Augusta record and an excellent short game touch, Jordan Spieth’s name would be pretty close to the top of any list.
The three-time Major champion is quietly gaining momentum following his wrist surgery. Having finished seventh at the Memorial last time out where all parts of his game were in good order, he looks primed for a big week.
4. Russell Henley
Russell Henley bounced back to form at the Memorial when finishing fifth. He ranks 12th on tour in driving accuracy and 11th around the greens, so is another with the skill-set we are looking for. His fifth place at the 2024 Open ticks the links form box.
5. Marc Leishman (each-way)
In an event where Paddy are paying to 10 each-way places, I will roll the dice on Marc Leishman. Now plying his trade on the LIV Tour, the Aussie is something of a forgotten man these days. A winner this year on LIV, Leishman came through qualifying to get here and has always thrived on the links and in testing conditions at the Majors. He could just produce a big week at a nice price.
