the US Open is by far the greatest major championship and frankly it’s probably the greatest spectacle in all of sports and it kind of annoys me we don’t talk about it any deeper than we do first of all literally anybody can qualify for the US Open which already makes it like 10 times more interesting than any major sporting event hell this year alone we had a bunch of social media personalities who made it to sectional qualifying and James Nicholas actually qualified for the US Open and if that isn’t interesting enough a dentist and a 17-year-old high schooler also both qualified for the US Open and speak of high schoolers qualifying Cole Hammer qualified at 15 years old for the US Open at Chambers Bay and as I bring up Chambers Bay that really leads me into the next best thing about the US Open which is the venues themselves chambers Bay literally looked like a mini golf course when they were playing it at the 2018 US Open at Chikok Hills Zack Johnson famously said “They’ve lost the golf course me at any random uni when I’m three over through one and this year at Oakmont the rough is reportedly five inches thick is it also a multi-millionaire is it also talented loving and respect in Bryson’s YouTube video just off the green at the sixth that doesn’t even look like rough that is fescue and if that doesn’t look hard enough to you the eighth hole this week is a par three that is expected to play 300 yards i need two shots to get there and one more little Oakmont fun fact for you the green speeds this week are going to be between a 14 and 15 on the stimp what so you grind through locals half the shoot under par then you get to sectionals basically have to shoot double digits under par over the course of 36 holes finally you get to the US Open and the USGA is like “Yeah we want you to bleed out of your ears we hope you’re suicidal by the end of this week.” And considering all that you’re probably thinking “Well it has to only favor the longest players in golf having distance and height is like a massive advantage.” But the truth is it favors absolutely nobody in 2008 Roco Mediate averaged almost 40 yards shorter than Tiger and route to taking him to an 18-hole playoff on Monday he was 6.2 yards behind the field average and Tiger was 31 yards ahead of the field average people forget Justin Rose has a US Open Web Simpson Gary Woodland and Lucas Glover but despite all those guys who you probably forgot even won the US Open the goat Phil never got his and that’s exactly what I’m talking about it literally favors no one phil is one of the greats of all time never got one and based on where he’s at in terms of exemptions there’s a pretty decent chance this will be his last US Open ever now he could go out and surprise us all like he did in 2021 but considering Oakmont is long and tight and Phil is statistically not the most accurate driver of the golf ball it doesn’t really play into his hand that being said if there is one week Ping could prove to us that they make the most forgiving driver in golf it would be at Oakmont but in all seriousness in terms of my pick I think he would be mentally ill to not pick Scotty Shuffler shooting like I don’t know six eight under par this week that’s my take i don’t I don’t bet against the house scotty Sheffller is the house right

  1. The Open Championship is the best, closely followed by the Masters then the US Open and then the PGA. But the best event in golf is the Ryder Cup by far.

  2. That 300 yard par 3 with greens that fast is just stupid. So, you're supposed to have a high spin 300 yard drive that can stick the green?

  3. Masters
    The open
    Us open
    The pga
The us open is the 3rd best major. Its not even fun to watch if I wanted to watch a bunch of guys duff around I'd watch video of myself playing a Muni.

  4. We need to stop calling the British open “The Open”. When you are in American soil you, and you say “The Open” you are referring to the US open. Stop giving the British control over our language.

  5. Couple of issues.

    1. Random dudes can also qualify for the open as well. The US Open isn’t unique in that respect

    2. The last dude to win a us open that wasn’t top 20 driving distance was Jordan Spieth. Which you ironically mentioned. The US open is a bombers major. I like how you had to cherry pick a US open 17 years ago to make that argument.

    3. Besides Oakmont and Beth Paige black which are US Open ready 24/7, the USGA screws up course’s horrendously. It took them 3 years to get chambers bay back to what it was.

    4. We don’t talk about it cause it’s the most boring technical Major of the year. The open was the first and you get to see a style of golf that is rare to find in the US: The masters is just the gold standard cause Augusta National knows how to brand better than any tournament on earth: The PGA championship picks beautiful courses and plays them at their most pristine condition. What’s bad is that the US Open used to be what to me the PGA championship is now.

  6. It might be Golf's best event, but not the greatest event in all of sports. Super Bowl. World Cup, and NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament are all better.

  7. Pretty subjective that it’s the greatest major and really opinionated that it’s the greatest sporting spectacle. What if you don’t like golf , what if you like football, hockey , tennis etc… Sure it’s different then most any sport that John Doe can be a carpenter by trade and qualify. However outside of the fact they qualified they are almost never in contention and most are spent packing by the weekend. And, I’ll take Augusta over any golf tournament!

  8. Put it back at Erin Hills one year. Didn’t get a fair shake last time due to crybabies. Let these boys play with the fescue growing wild this time.

  9. I have been fortunate enough to play Oakmont and just an FYI, Oakmont slows the greens down when the US Open is played there. They told me the greens are normally running 16 on the stemp meter!!!

  10. US Opens should only be played at publicly accessible courses. Any private club hosting should be accessible by the general public. It's an abomination that all of these private courses are closed off to John Q Public. Hence why I'm no longer a member of the USGA. I'm not supporting that organization that just pumps more money into exclusive private, wealthy clubs no thanks.

  11. My buddy’s playing in it. It is not going to be 8 under. He thinks under par if not even. Depends on the weather for sure tho

  12. Amazing take. People laugh when I say the U.S. open is my favorite event of the year. Love to watch the best in the world struggle and grind it out for 4 days

  13. Bias to the difficult Oak Hill events as well, being a local Rochester resident. Love feeling relatable to the pros for a moment.

  14. The open is by far better than the us open. It's the oldest, most prestigious event in all of golf going right back to nearly the beginning. Played on traditional courses, the way golf was intended to be played. There is only one champion golfer of the year, and that's the open winner

  15. That doesn’t make it the GOAT of all sports, or greatest spectacle. Maybe in golf yes. But not every sport. Sorry don’t buy that statement.
