if you want to become a better golfer you better start thinking about bogey avoidance rather than making loads more birdies that’s right lower handicaps aren’t making a ton of birdies they’re just reducing the amount of bogeies double bogeies or worse that they have check out these numbers quickly lower handicaps are just better at keeping big numbers off their scorecard so in today’s video I’m going to give you some tips and tricks that low handicappers are using and you should too to help you avoid those big numbers so let’s start on the tea there are plenty of tips and tricks that low handicappers are using on the tea and that might sound crazy but there are a ton first of all the Grove Te’s where I am at the moment are unbelievably flat but I promise you I’ve played a lot of courses around the world and they are not always even and what you’ll see lots of low handicap good golfers doing is moving around the tea to try and find a nice flat point now like I said these TE’s are ridiculously flat which is amazing but if your course doesn’t have super flat TE’s just try and find move along it set pretend that you’re setting yourself up to a golf ball and flat part that’s going to make your a bit more consistent maybe with strike and those kind of ideas get that flat point now another tip and trick on the tea is whereabouts you might tee up whether you’re a slicer or a hooker or a drawer or a fader now what I would suggest if you’re a slicer or a fader of the golf ball you move over to the right hand side of the tee if you’re a drawer or hooker of the golf ball I would move over to the left hand side of the tea now reason for that I’m just going to pick this camera up here and let’s pretend that we’re a drawer of the golf ball so our ball starts out to the right and draws back if we look at this tee and the flag is straight down here if I was to tee up on the right hand side of the tee like a slicer look at how this bush for instance on the right is starting to enclose and encroach on my initial start direction whereas if I move over to the left hand side of the tea all the way over here look now all of a sudden I got a load of space here that I can aim out towards to get that ball to start right and draw back same thing with a fade but there aren’t any trees or anything on the left hand side here to demonstrate but you should get the idea if you’re a drawer tee up on the left if you’re a fader tee up on the right and again try and find a flat spot around those areas and that’s not it for the teeing ground i want you to use tea height as a weapon so many good golfers are using this as a weapon now if we look down this hole again I’ve got bunkers on the left and out of bounds down the right so the worst place that I could probably go is out of bounds and lose a golf ball second worst place is those bunkers now I can probably carry those bunkers but I don’t want to go anywhere down the right of this hole now if I tee my golf ball up higher than what I’m used to I’m more likely to hit up on that golf ball and move my path more into out producing more of a draw hitting that draw is going to move my ball away from that danger of losing a golf ball let’s say the danger’s all up the left i’ve got lake out of bounds down the left i am going to tee that ball down lower than what I’m used to now this is going to make me swing maybe a bit steeper on it and move my path more out to in causing more of a cut shot again moving that ball away from danger if you’ve never experimented with tea height next time you’re on the range give it a go go low medium and high and see what happens to your ball flight it will change i promise you use it as a weapon and that’s still not it for the teeing ground i’ve got one more thing bunkers we said here a minute ago worst thing you can probably do is lose a ball out of bounds second thing is hit it in those bunkers you’ve got to avoid bunkers at all cost hitting into fairway bunkers cost golfers on average 1.4 shots oh ouch you need to keep away from them so doing a little bit of analysis of the hole before you go and rip your driver out your bag or whatever you normally tee off with is crucial those two bunkers down there on the left are 250 to carry i know that I can get over them so it’s not a problem they’re not in my range whereas lots of you down that lens those bunkers are going to be prime distance of where your ball’s going to land so think about changing club off the tea so you don’t mess with them think about tearing your ball up at a different height to make sure that your ball’s moving away from them all those kind of ideas keep out of bunkers because it’s costing you a lot of shots when you go in the fairway bunkers who knew that low handicappers had so many tips and tricks just on the teeing ground i know crazy let’s give this one a rep straight down the middle avoiding bunkers avoiding out of play and keeping that ball down the fairway before I give you my next tips and tricks to avoid those big numbers on your scorecard you’re all obviously here to improve your golf and sometimes if you want to improve your scores you have to change your goal swings which is why you should head over to swing tweaks all you have to do is go into the description down below and click on the link oh I haven’t have I oh oh download the app and upload some swings i mean every golfer has a load of their golf swings on their phone right write a little bit about your game and you’ll get a comprehensive narrated swing analysis back on your phone within hours from a PGA golf professional they’ll include drills exercises for you to work on all for less than the cost of some of those fancy golf balls you keep losing probably it’s that easy if you want to get better this year swing tweaks is a great place to start the next thing that lower handicaps and better golfers are good at doing to avoid these high numbers is analyzing lie whenever I play with high handicaps I see this all the time i am on the fairway here and I’ve got threewood in my hands and as soon as people get on the fairway they think “Right that’s a good lie i can do whatever.” But I put my 3-wood behind this ball and I can see that that ball is sat down slightly it’s not propped up perfect on a plush lie it’s in this little See where it just disappears into that little groove and now all of a sudden I’m going to be approaching this 3-wood different to if it was sat up on that nice tough on the fairway the one that sat down in that little crevice i’m going to all of a sudden be a bit steeper into the back of that ball to try and get the ball hitting higher on the face to get that sort of high launching knuckle ball whereas the one that’s sat up a bit nicer I’m not really having to do much or change things other scenarios slight changes in whether the ball’s above your feet or below your feet or if you’re on an ups slope or a down slope lower handicappers are better at adjusting to those situations and they’ve got the weapons to get themselves just past that shot cuz they know that it’s a little bit dangerous and dodgy and keep it in play whereas those higher handicappers would play the same swing from each of those spots each of those lies and that’s where you get yourselves into trouble playing your usual normal swing from that lie that’s sat slightly down all of a sudden a top comes in you slice it over miles out of play whatever the situation might be you need to be able to read lie well and that’s not just on fairways that’s in the rough that’s in bunkers bunkers is a massive one around the greens it can end up in so many situations a bit of sand behind the ball a big tuft and you have to start swinging steeper get weight more left and again you guys down that lens are just playing the same shot and fattening that golf ball not hitting it hard enough to get that ball out and it’s costing you shots analyze lie take note of what that ball looks like behind what that club looks like behind the ball is it looking normal is it sat down is it sat up are you going to get a flyer are you not there’s so many situations and good players that are avoiding high numbers and doubles and triples are good at reading lie i’m going to put it in that little hollow there and see what I can do so I’m gonna put my ball position back a little bit i’m going to hit down a little bit more on it and get that sort of choppiness even though I’m in the fairway oh it’s a bullet high on the face knuckle ball oh stop it Lock and I promise you if that ball was sat up on a tough I would not have played that freewood like that the next thing that lower handicaps are better at to avoid those high numbers is understanding the limits of their golf clubs i’ve just slightly missed a fairway up the right and I’m now stuck behind a couple of trees yes I could go under them and hit a low one etc etc and I can go up and over if we were to go up and over better players know their limits they’ll put a club behind the golf ball look up and go “That’s not happening.” So they’re assessing the lie like we talked about just a second ago and then judging what they can get over trees under trees etc etc and another one out of bunkers being too aggressive out of fairway bunkers and hitting the lip and not getting it out those kind of things but better players are just better at understanding the limits of their golf clubs hitting shots out of rough i see amateurs trying to pump six five irons out of thick rough and it’s just not going to happen that’s where again you as a golfer need to become a bit more streetwise maybe playing more will help you understand those situations right what happened there why did I use a five iron well I use a five iron because that’s how I’m 150 yards away and that’s how far I hit my five iron well okay that’s fine but the lie is telling you that your five iron isn’t the club and you need to know the limits of each one i stand behind this golf ball in this lie and I know that this pitching wedge is going to be very tight to getting over this tree i’m going to give it a go but if it was in a tournament or whatever I would be using my 52 here to get this up and over this is gonna be close yeah just over but again I know my limits and the key to this is just experiment get yourself in these positions on a practice round and see what happens with certain clubs can that get over there and then next time you’re in a situation like this you’ll go I can do that or no I can’t so let’s change my thought processes and club selection knowing your limits for each club is going to help you get rid of those high numbers on your scorecard final thing that lower handicaps are good at that helps them avoid those big numbers is distance control on the putting green pga Tour dispersion is roughly 10% of the total distance of a putt so let’s say you’re putting from 10 ft they will roughly be around 1 ft from the hole if you’re putting from 30 ft you’re going to be roughly 3 feet from the hole and if you can roughly what’s this 5 10 15 20 25 30 35 about 40 ft so I want this putt to finish within 4T from the hole that’s my goal and I’m that’s then I’m tall average dispersion and when I play with amateurs and high handicaps it’s such a clear and obvious difference between those low handicaps and high handicaps if you can get your distance control good i’ve got to get that within 4T but I don’t think I have this could potentially be the perfect example of why distance control is so important scratch handicaps three putt every something like 36 holes I think it is whereas high handicaps 20 plus three putt every seven holes that’s quite a difference so oh he snuck it in I thought I might free putted that but I haven’t luckily get good at distance control it’s simp it’s not as simple as just get better at distance control you need to practice it and getting out on for putting green before you play those kind of things just putting at home on your carpet and getting a feel for your swing length and speed and distances is key get good at that distance control i hope these simple little tips and tricks that lower handicappers are using to avoid those big numbers on scorecard help you eliminate some of those big numbers yourselves and get you going in the right direction with those scores let me know in the comments down below if you use any little tips and tricks to help you avoid big numbers as well i’d love to know in the comments as always little I just cannot hit my driver to save my life. But my iron game is good! So I’m hitting 2-4 off tee before I can even hit my iron. lol.
I was horrible at driver, too, until I paid attention to T height, ball position, and shoulder tilt. I'm now working on drawing the ball. I tend to slice naturally, so I have to change the swing path and head angle.
conclusion, golf is hard.
The Grove – v. fancy.
Hopefully you've invited Mrs. Coach.
Any more vlogs coming? I loved the one on marks channel
Using hdc shots…. If I have a shot on a particular hole I play the hole with the extra shot and if I make standard par it’s a bonus
You got to 100k!!! Congrats
On the tee you also have two club lengths behind the tee markers to place your ball. Many times, you can get a better lie from just a bit behind the tees rather than right up at the very front where the tee markers are. This is especially true on par 3 holes where there are many divots taken near the front.
Lovely thank you
What do you think of teeing your ball a couple of feet or so behind a mark that is on the grass and go behind and look that the ball and mark is in the direction you want the ball to start. And then square your club to that?
I play off 2 and have done for the past ten years. The main thing you need to work on is low point control, for ball striking, and the sort game.
Good content, will help, thx
My tip is to know your limits and skill of play, don’t let pride keep you from moving up a tee box when playing for fun, I play the box that gives a better chance of reaching green in regulation at a chance at birdie
Like it coach, keep the course management vlogs coming. I'm done with swing advice on YT, LOL. On that last you should link to your recent distance control putt video, that was pure gold for me.
Have a game plan of where to miss green, some holes just short and chip on is better than having trouble in play at back or middle of green
Solid info!
