Kiwi golfer Ryan Fox and Italy’s Matteo Manassero are sharing the lead after the third round of the Canadian Open.
The 38-year-old, who requires a podium finish to qualify for the US Open, carded a six-under 64 to be 14-under at TPC Toronto at Osprey Valley on Saturday (local time).
He finished the round with six birdies and one bogey in the third round, recording 13 birdies during the opening two days.
Fox told media after his round that he was in a good place following his first PGA tour title at the Myrtle Beach Classic in May.
“It just feels like it doesn’t quite matter as much,’’ Fox said.
“I know that is a strange way to put it; freedom might be a better way to term it, but obviously I have been playing well.
“But just a bad shot doesn’t seem to worry me as much, I am not worried about where I can hit it.
“Just kind of focus to hit a good shot and see what happens. It’s a good place to be on a golf course to be honest.”
Fox said he would “keep doing what I am doing” as the final round looms.
“The last three days I have everything really well, hit it really solid; I have hit a lot of good wedge shots, hold a few putts.”
Masters champion Rory McIlroy finished in 149th after an eight-over 78 that included a quadruple bogey eight on the fifth hole.
He said his performance concerned him.
“Obviously going to Oakmont next week, what you need to do more than anything else there is hit fairways. I’m still sort of searching for the missing piece off the tee. Obviously for me, when I get that part of the game clicking, then everything falls into place for me. Right now, that isn’t. Yeah, that’s a concern going into next week.”
