moving day at the RBC Canadian Open TPC Toronto your setting and what a cast of characters cameron Champ was the leading man heading into the weekend a two-shot lead but that disappeared quickly champ just got on his championship stuff here on Saturday lee Hodes on the other hand looking for his second career win on tour won the 3M back in 2023 par five 18th offering opportunity coming home his second shot stiff to 14 ft a great look for Eagles started his day with one why not end it there bookend Big Birds a 7 under 63 turned in by Hodgees who sits T3 at 13 under mckenzie Hughes vying for a win in his home country nick Taylor did it in Canada under the Canadian flag some two years ago hughes trying to join that group and Eagle look of his own at the last from 16 ft 2 in shy but we do stand on guard for the use T6 at 12 under your highest ranking Canadian through three rounds matteo Manisero you don’t have to guess what flag he is flying the Italian still efering his first career win trying to finish strong as well after laying up at the last he wedges it to kick in range would make the bird moto Benny Manisero T1 at 14 under the inside track for win number one would come in his 50th career PGA Tour event we’ll have to take down a host of others including Ryan Fox a winner at the One Flight Myrtle Beach Classic just a few weeks ago his first PGA Tour victory was a alt event now trying to claim a national title here in Canada his eagle look at 18 just shy would make the birdie putt fox and Menaceero tied co-leaders at 14 under fox looking for his second win in his last four events the affformentioned Nick Taylor coming home with a surge as well winner at the RBC two years ago with that epic 70footer almost jars it for the albatross here’s six feet for Eagle taylor back into the mix vaults from eight under to 10 under and within four shots of the lead heading to our final day at the RBC taylor T16 we have 24 players inside four shots of Manisero and Fox as you take a look at your leaderboard with the odds attached it’s anybody’s ball game with 18 to play and for more we take you into the Super Tower where our friend and yours Trevor Ilman joins us with his thoughts here following round three trevor we’re looking at 24 players within four shots of this lead what do you attribute the lack of separation to well we just had perfect conditions out there receptive greens a few days under these players belt from a standpoint of getting to know this new golf course and so we’ve got a bunch of leaderboard going into tomorrow i’m looking forward to it in those 24 that you just mentioned we’ve got four Canadians which makes it extra special extra exciting for the hometown fans here and tomorrow the wind is going to switch and get a little stronger as well so I think we’re set up for a really exciting Sunday i heard you examining a bit down the stretch what do you think the discerning factor will be on Sunday that does separate a winner for us well look it’s a long golf course past 70 the two par fives are the first and the 18th so from 2 to 17 you got fours and threes you got to hang on tight and really drive the ball well this rough is some of the longest rough that I’ve ever seen at a PGA Tour event Moose so you got to keep it down the fairways if you can you get a bunch of extra roll as well and then you can try and attack with some short irons but if you struggle off the tea like we saw with Cameron Champ today who was uh the leader after 36 holes is really going to be a tough afternoon for you so that’s really the key you got to get off the tea well and then you can try and attack from there and looking at some of those names in the top 24 we start looking at win equity where it’s going to happen when it’s going to happen no Scotty in the field this week some of the other headliners not making the cut or not in the mix how important is it for those names that are within striking distance to take advantage in let’s say the absence of the intimidation factor of others sure look I will say this there might not be much PGA Tour winning experience but if you look at Manisero and you look at Fox I mean these are guys that have won some big-time events over on the DP World Tour both of them have a ton of experience uh Fox got that win a few weeks ago at Myrtle Beach to get his first win over here on the PGA Tour uh and so I think he’s the guy to beat but with it being so stacked really we could have somebody We’ve seen scores in the low 60s already so anything uh this week so anything could happen coming into Sunday and I think that’s what’s really going to have it set up to be a fun day for us Sunday at the RBC always does have something in store for us we’ll see what it is on CBS trevor we appreciate your insight as always thanks Moose for more we say hello to CBS golf analyst Rick Gaiman here to examine what all this bunching at the top means rick every leaderboard says something to us every leaderboard tells us a story what is the story we’re told here through 54 holes oh boy it’s going to be a wild one on Sunday in Canada i mean this is a this is a golf course and a leaderboard first we’ll start with leaderboard i mean there’s probably a dozen and a half guys who could win this golf tournament pretty realistically it’s also the type of golf course that played uh more than two strokes underpar in the third round which is expected to play uh probably much more difficult on Sunday in the final round and it has a bunch of holes Joe that are going to play overpar and it has a bunch of holes that are going to play underpar and when you get a situation like that if you go out and make a birdie on one of the hard holes or you make a bogey on one of the easy holes you see massive flips it’s creating a a a range of scores this week where we have seen guys shoot 65 or 75 we’ve seen guys guys shoot 62 and 78 it’s just a huge range of outcomes and combine that with this leaderboard that is completely jam-packed i I think it could just be chaos all Sunday long and we are here for it uh let’s play to the crowd here for a moment because this is Canada’s national open the logo has been amended with Nick Taylor throwing the club in the air we see him offer a a bang at the last with an eagle to get within four shots of the lead as well when you try and identify an edge here on Sunday with so many players near the top of this leaderboard is there any value add to those playing to the home crowd there is the Canadian flag sort of littered all over this top 25 there’s certainly no doubt that the Canadian crowd is going to try to carry the eight Canadians who made the cut uh through the finish line on Sunday no doubt about it i do wonder though Joe if that becomes a detriment at some point i mean there is just such high expectations i don’t necessarily think it is a coincidence that it was 70 years between Canadians winning this event i think there’s a lot of pressure there’s obviously a lot of pride in getting the job done and the closest Canadian to the top of the board Mackenzie Hughes uh went out and shot probably uh the best round that he is going to have all week so now you you need him to back up a 64 with something even lower so I I think it’s pretty un unlikely that a Canadian gets the job done but it will not be without uh I mean tens of thousands of Canucks trying to trying to get him across the finish line yeah we’re going to see if we can get him rowdy at the rink didn’t produce many birdies on this day but Nick Taylor see him walk off with family did get back within reach of that lead trying to do what he did some two years ago that 70oot putt that fell one of the greatest moments that we’ve seen in recent memory let’s move forward here with our leaders Ryan Fox Matteo Manisero ryan Fox does have one win to his name manacero looking for his first PGA Tour victory when you look at those two talents relative to one another and what will be asked of a final pairing who in your eyes maybe is more fit to carry that lead yeah this is really interesting these are two um savvy international vets right guys that have played a lot on the DP World Tour matteo Matisera when he first emerged into professional golf I mean he was he was the next coming i mean he was this young talented Italian star who was going to take Italian golf to a whole another level didn’t shake out that way he’s he’s not the first he certainly won’t be the last but he’s picked up over 11 strokes from Ta Green this week he’s been phenomenal in those areas he has found an ability to avoid disaster for the most part and he’s given himself a lot of opportunities i think though Joe I prefer the Ryan Fox side of things here uh fresh off the win just a couple of weeks ago in Myrtle Beach his skill set is fairly unique in Global Golf he is a long powerful hitter um but he has touch and that is very rare his short game is pretty sound he’s a solid putter and it is unl unusual that you get those skill sets that come together um I I think he’s got to be just brimming with confidence off that win a couple of weeks ago think it’s going to feel a lot more difficult for Matteo when he gets into that into that final pairing a national open up for grabs and an international leaderboard as we look at it so many with a chance coming into Sunday rick we’re going to get to a pick here in a moment before we do I want you to make the case for somebody else a longer shot a little bit of a ways down the board who you think if everything goes right can get to the number they need to uh dare I say Cameron Young right i mean the guy I mean yeah it it it hurts coming out of the mouth sometimes but Cam Young is just close enough uh the game has been rounding into form he is kind of a better version of Ryan Fox the ability to hit it long and have touch on and around the greens he played himself into the US Open on Monday in final qualifying winning a five for one he has the firepower to get this done it would be very unlikely Joe but I I think that um if you want to find a long shot with with some upside this would be a sneaky one for him to grab and it would be a moment certainly in the making for Cameron Young who has had his ups and downs since popping onto the scene let’s get to that pick to win here tell me the who and tell me why because we always do get drama down the stretch at the RBC what’s that end scene going to look like the caveat here is I have no idea uh it’s wide open i I I believe uh my favorite is Jake Knap at the moment you know he is a proven winner on the PGA Tour he has a great uh demeanor right there’s just not a moment that’s going to be too big for him he’s never going to get out over his skis he does a really good job of keeping the golf course in front of him and then he has the ability with how far he hits it to really take lines that a lot of his peers cannot and not only does he hit it long he gets a lot of roll out he has really turned his wedge game into um a weapon in the last couple of months i I like the way that he sets up with the guys in front of him not necessarily being prolific winners maybe not having the best uh skill profiles for the week i think Jake Knap just within arms reach of this league could be very very dangerous on Sunday yeah that syrupy swing that prodigious power that comes out of it we do have a win already to his name two top 10s this season so let’s push it forward if that is what comes to fruition on Sunday Jake Nap’s arrow is certainly pointing up what would a win on Sunday mean for nap time oh it would be huge right i mean just to continue to add security to uh his PGA Tour career to go from one win to two wins on the PGA Tour is is massive you know we call it the validation win um it it proves that your first one was was not a fluke and I think that for the most part Joe his game um projects really well as a modern golfer that syrupy easy power that you referenced earlier he’s got plenty in the tank if he can start to refine some of the other aspects he could be a really really strong player in this modern era so I I think there’s a lot to be excited about especially if Nap can get it done with 18 to go we root against no one but there are certain personalities that are easy to root for and I will file Jake Knap under that we’ll see if we can get a second one here on Sunday rick Gaiman appreciate your insight as always pal thanks Bruce final round action coming your way Sunday on CBS and streaming on Paramount Plus all begins at 3 Eastern time and when the final putt falls join us right here on CBS Sports HQ for post round and a trip into the Super Tower
