[Music] all right guys and girls welcome back to the channel today we have a really cool lesson set up we’re going to discuss AB Mitchell he uh was one of the old school teachers that was the first to discover how to torque the body to hit golf balls more consistently so we’re going to go through that step by step um this will be phase one not sure how many phases are going to come out of this but uh stick around because because every time we torque one muscle group down it changes the plane lines in our body so there’s a lot to discover it’s going to make your rain systems really fun too because you can do a lot of this stuff without doing any drills at all so thanks for tuning in let’s get this thing started today it’s freaking freezing it’s windy luckily the sun’s out I’m wearing four layers I can’t swing to well today but we’re going to do something pretty cool uh one of my favorite golf instruction videos I ever saw was when secret in the dirt Steve Aly 10 and S one among others I think his son was in this one too started talking about Abe Mitchell Abe Mitchell was a very old-timey instructor but he was probably the first to discover what Martin a hopefully I’m pronouncing that right uh calls the most powerful moveing golf which essentially is torquing your muscles so that your joints become like overstabilized I guess would be the best way to put it so that essentially you set up plain Lines within the body that make your swing far more repeatable dayto day so today we’re going to kind of go through that I’m going to give you guys phase one of this teaching which is going to basically break down um how he did it what it does for your golf game so stick around enjoy hopefully the wins not too much so a Mitchell was a pretty interesting fellow uh when we discussed torque in the golf swing essentially what we’re talking about is twisting the body to prevent unnecessary movement designed essentially to resist the movement and inertia of the club head against your joints so if anybody’s ever watched any old Hogan videos you’d always see on his second step when he really wanted to hit a drive hard he would twerk his back right foot now this is a secret that Stephen one kind of taught um alongside of Steve elington and I think Martin A’s picked it up and again I hope I’m pronouncing that correctly but you know everybody wondered why Hogan had that extra spike in the shoe and I’ll tell you right now that’s exactly why because when you torque this foot down you can get shuffler Shuffle going pretty quickly um I wouldn’t be surprised so not sure what happened there with the camera but again Scotty sheffler um I don’t think he uses a lot of torque like Hogan dead he’s a taller guy he has plenty of width and his swing to create speed so his back foot Shuffle could be a possibility that he’s torquing that back foot but in reality he’s not really a rotary swing kind of guy so I highly doubt he’s using ground torque to create Ground Force much more so than he’s using speed and we’ll call it vertical or even horizontal pressures to create that Scotty Shuffle so when we’re talking about it we’re going to talk about it from a recreational standpoint and why I think most golfers could really improve their ball striking by just implementing one of these small torque principles so one of these principles that I was starting to discuss there hopefully the camera picked it up was Hogan’s back Right Foot the extra spike in his shoe and how I believed he torqued the ground just like St and Steve elinson said in secret in the dirt which was kind of into the ground like so now Martin aers went on to discuss how that creates a chain through the upper body as well if you want to watch some of his videos it’s really good content but he’s a very Dynamic instructor I’ll say very complex so takes a while to uncover a lot of what he’s talking about if you don’t buy his system so if you’re looking just for some free content and you want to learn learn how to add more torque in your swing stick around we’re going to get into it so first thing we’re going to work on is just torquing this right foot and understand that from a Down the Line view when we torque that right foot our hips are going to open up which is going to change our swing plane so I think a lot of the reason that Hogan did that was to basically hit a fade it it sets your swing plane up so that you’re just aim slightly left of Target and when you release the club it’s just going to let that CL face stay open a little bit so looks a little something like this so this would be my natural setup and then I’m going to torque that knee in keep it there and just swing normal now we’re into a pretty good draw Breeze right now and that ball went almost dead straight as you can see the ball barely moved if at all um and again this is a very big draw bre today so the likelihood that was most likely a fade and I think Ben Hogan having a hook in the early parts of his career and even as a young golfer because he wanted more distance led to this discovery now I don’t know if he found a Mitchell I don’t know if this was something that was being kind of communicated around the the tour at this time through the teaching uh gurus then but I would imagine they talk a little bit about it so since this is only phase one of the training we’re not going to get to depth with these Tor I’m not going to explain the millions of different ways that you can torque your forearm your shoulder your hip your knee I mean there you can there’s not a joint in this body that you can’t torque down I want you guys to think of it like we’re building a golfing machine okay that machine has nuts and bolts okay as well as bands and regulators and all kinds of cool stuff in it right and I’m an engineer so this is how my mind works but if you guys can imagine this and visualize this what you’ll start to understand is that every joint in the body has a purpose in the golf swing so because of that if for instance I torque my arm or I pronate it to a point where it hits in range of motion what happens to my shoulders well they elevate so I get in like a basically an upward swing angle as well as open this just naturally happens because I’m torquing that now if I grip the club I’m getting ready to hit and I do that same movement it’s not quite is obvious but you can see it right so unored torqued so it actually closes the shoulders and it basically creates a slight upward tilt of the shoulder Ang so let’s see what that looks like and a golf swing and again what will happen most likely is I’m going to hit a pretty good draw here you won’t be able to see it but I’ll show you on my uh trackman here once it’s done so you guys get an idea and again we’re into a big draw wind so this is going to create basically a hook type shot we’re not going to torque anything else down we’re basically just going to take this arm rotate it inward like they talk about in today’s game and let’s just see what happens and there you go big hook started just left of my target hooked offline big time right but went pretty far carried with the wind and again I was aiming far further left this time around because the camera is kind of right in my line of release so I didn’t want to hit it um but understand that like as we begin torquing stuff things can get offline pretty quick so that was just a demonstration to show you if you’re just torquing one joint and you’re not paying attention to the rest it changes the entire Dynamic of the golf swing if I were to slow that down You’ probably notice too that I came way over the top which understandably if I do this I’m probably going to rip the club to the inside so the inverse of that is to come over the top to square the club face and that’s what most of you guys are doing so now let’s just do a little down the line action here where essentially we’re going to do the same thing and you’re going to see how my entire body setup changes my shoulders close my hips close and basically the only thing I can do is come back over the top to hit at the golf ball squarely online so this would be my normal setup right right here let’s say we’re aim aiming at the left bunker or the right bunker of the green flag now watch when I torque this arm down how everything shuts down and closes off to where now my aim is actually at the it’s actually at the right basket now so if I bring the club up I’m way inside right so I only have one option but let’s let’s take a look at it in a full swing so I’m going to really torque that down I’m going to hold that angle and then I’m just going to swing and there you go it started at the basket and hooked all the way to the green flag Now understand there’s a right to left wi but it’s going to be hard to control that dayto day so understand this is lesson number one and I think the best way to go forward with this lesson is to give you a way to work it at the range so let’s talk a little bit about that understanding that you are going to be completely new to this the most most of you are there might be a few of you that have tried this in the past but for those of you that want to give this a shot I’m going to recommend you’re at least we’ll say a 10 handicap or better the worst shot you’re going to hit is thin right or maybe a slight chunk of the golf ball but for the most part you hit the ball in the air every single time you know if you’re hitting Shanks or you know duck hooks or just terrible golf shots you’re not really going to be ready for this but you’re welcome to give it a try cuz you might find something that works temporarily as you begin as you continue developing your swing so the first thing we’re going to do is we’re going to talk about how each element of the body is naturally set up to resist the turning away and the turning through of a golf shot and you guys probably all felt this before but the first thing we have to discuss is the natural tendencies we have because we can’t go anywhere until we know where we are so the first thing I want to talk about is if I’m going to hit at the ground all of my torque everything’s going to be set up so that I push backwards which most amers do they they think they’re hitting a golf ball here when really they’re hitting it out there they’re trying to catch the golf ball and send it that direction I’ve talked about that in other videos but again it takes a while to figure it out so if we change our intention we’re going to say that most of you that are going to be trying this tactic understand that we’re not hitting down we’re hitting here through the ball and the ball’s just getting in the way now you have to realize that you’re natural intention if we’re throwing the club that way is to go what backwards right because that’s the opposing Force to this basically inertia of this weight of course there’s a lot more to it than that but that’s just a basic understanding so with everything we do to torque our body whether it be the Steve elington way where he torqus backwards he’s setting up to release and play a draw or a Ben Hogan way where he to torqus everything forward or even better a modern player would be a John ROM who points both of his feet almost at a 45° angle and torqus everything forward so that he gets Reverb on his back swing so he has basically a ton of speed at a very short swing doesn’t matter what you do you just have to experiment with it so in order to do it correctly we have to start with the big torqus not the tiny torqus like the toe torqus or the finger torqus we have to start with the glute and hip torqus and the shoulder torqus and the core torqus all right so here your drills for the range for all of you beginners the first one I want you to start with is torquing specifically the hips either opening or closing them or opening them and the way this is going to feel it’s going to feel like everything is staying in place and you’re just moving your hips by screwing your heels or actually your entire foot into the ground towards the Target right and that’s going to create more of a fade if you’re playing a hook or a draw this will help you hit the ball a little straighter but understand at first you’re probably going to pull it offline a few times before your body figures out how to shallow the club better but let’s take a look at what that would look like so again we’re using both legs here we’re going to torque them into the ground open up our hips leave everything else in place and then just swing normal and notice the ball comes out extremely low what happens when I torque everything now my entire body lines are essentially set up in a punt shot position so I’m already preset at impact so when you’re at the range you’re practicing this don’t do it 100% out of the gate just go with like a 10% just a little bit of a torque something looks a little something like that just enough to resist that movement looks a little something like this so now it comes out low little left mine should have faded if you’re playing a draw you will probably continue drawing it so it’ll just be a little pull draw but easily fixable understand this is an experimentation thing you aren’t going to better your ball striking right out of the gate with this you have to understand it first before we can take it to the next level which will be phase two phase three phase four where you learn how to become a shot maker by U utilizing these torqus for your stock shots so next we’re going to take those torqus just lower body we’re going to do the Steep alington method which is to torque everything away from the Target and again our feet are screwing into the ground this direction will create a draw path so let’s take a look and see what that looks like Additionally you will hit the ball higher because you will most likely be behind the ball at impact so this is great for driver shots not necessarily for iron shots that’s why I’m hitting a six iron because it’s okay if I hit it just a little thin so we’re all set up there’s 100% torque so we’re just going to do about 10% well maybe that’s 25% and then we’re just going to swing and there you go a little higher slightly thin but a nice little tight draw that started at the right bunker of the orange flag and Drew to the flag a little more controlled now if you guys have ever seen Steve elinson up close or even on secret in the dirt he played one of the most beautiful draws you’ve ever seen and he did it by managing the torqus of his lower body and his upper body not going to tell you how he did it if you watch a lot of his videos it’ll explain it I mean he gives it all away but understand that there are upper body torqus we have to work too okay so now we’re going to talk a little bit about the upper body torqus and the best way to show you is face on here cuz we are going to essentially become a screwdriver so we’re either going to screw into the ground or we’re going to pull pull the screw out right so it’s Lefty Loosey righty TIY again I have a six iron here it’s finally starting to warm up a little bit so maybe I can actually complete a back swing but you guys are going to get to see how if I take the lower body torque away and just add upper body it completely changes my plane lines and my ability to release the golf club so you’re going to see some pretty crazy shots here and I think the purpose of this is just to show you that when you go to the Rain if you’re going to torque one thing you have to torque the opposing joint package we’ll call it power package which is you know golfing machine term so just recognize that any one joint torqued or over torqued will create terrible golf shots so before we jump into this be careful torque very small amounts until you master that and then work into torque multiple pieces at the same time you know guys this is going to be like a process you’re not going to get it right away so don’t think you’re going to come to the range first time out torque your swing and magically find something it’s going to be frustrating it’s going to take a little work so just be patient with yourself and uh work through it but anyway let’s become a screwdriver so first thing we’re going to do is we’re going to torque the body this direction so it’s rightward side bin everything is pronating and the the right hand super in the left hand and your whole body is going to turn and set into the ground and this is essentially what you’re going to look like now for anybody that’s seen a good tour pro this is kind of what they look like when they set up so let’s take a look and see what that looks like swing wise so there you go everything’s torqued down now but understand my legs aren’t doing anything so let’s go ahe and hit this shot and see what happens okay pretty thin definitely low and hookie not my best shot yeah it only went 160 yards with the six iron I mean it’s windy out today but I should be at least getting 180 with this thing right now so that was just a pretty terrible shot so let’s do the opposite of that now torquing everything this is righty tidy now we’re going Lefty Loosey so now we have a closed Club face everything pointing left so now we have to open it up and what do we kind of look like we kind of look like a few beginner right but let’s hit it anyway see what happens well it’s about as bad as it gets guys that was not a fun swing to make so let’s talk a little bit about why that type of torque actually is completely unnecessary in the golf swing and you don’t even need to try it but if you’re willing to give it a shot you can get a good laugh out of it at least the golf swing is on an arc if we torque this direction we turn the arc into essentially a stack and tilt type movement it’s not going to work guys you’ll hit down on it pretty good but controlling the clut face is very difficult so understand we will eventually torque things that direction but it will be individually to counteract how we torque other things in other directions all right but again this is lesson one so to finish lesson we’re just going to combine the two torqus that are actually working well which to me is the torque towards the Target and the upper body torque back towards this target which creates balance in the golf swing let’s take a look and see what that looks like so now I basically feel coiled up right at my Target and I have a lot of power here guys like I can really unleash my body so let’s go ahead and hit it oh what a golf swing it came out dead straight too so opposing forces can do amazing things for your game and again like I said that’s 170 shot much better than the 150 160 shots I was hitting before by using opposing forces to torque your golf swing I’m hoping that the camera’s picking this up but just in case it isn’t um I’m going to take a screenshot here and then I’ll add that to the video and you guys know by now that I love to be thorough so I know I make long videos but I don’t think there’s anything that I’m adding that isn’t beneficial so keep watching because this is the best part if we use opposing forces to Torque from this angle I want you to watch how incredibly balanced this golf swing is and how on plane it remains so I’m torquing my upper body away from the target my lower body towards the Target and look at that everything squares nicely I have a ton of coiled up power in my body and you can feel it now all I have to do is swing and I mean absolutely perfect so that’s two in a row that I’ve hit pretty amazingly into the wind into a draw wind too I mean we’re getting 160 170 for these right so the thing you have to understand is that you won’t get this right away but for every torque you create there has to be an opposing torque which is what we’re going to get into next time and we’re going to start refining the torch we’re going to learn how to add foot torque versus knee torque versus hip torque versus core torque versus shoulder elbow wrist torque and believe it or not you can actually torque things in your neck all kinds of stuff which I’ve kind of already given away in one of my shorts which is Hogan’s turning away from the ball which as one of my viewers I appreciate you uh clued in on the C7 vertebrae which is the cervical number seven Verte vertebrae in the neck which basically meets essentially your shoulder line is immovable it does not move so sometimes we have to lock it down in order to make a more consistent golf swing so hope you guys enjoyed Please Subscribe like share um the more people watching my stuff the better the content is going to get we’re just we’ve just started chipping away at the top of this Iceberg guys I have over 150 years of data up here I’ve read probably 200 to 300 books I’ve watched well over a thousand videos I’ve taken lessons from some of the top Pros in the nation the world actually if I consider Bradley Hughes cuz I mean what he’s done for brenon Todd is quite amazing so stick around guys I’m I’m giving this stuff away for free you’re still going to have to work at it but hopefully you can understand it better now and it’s not quite as confusing as it is when you’re going through like the snake oil type YouTube golfers all right so thanks for watching we’ll see you next time
