President Donald Trump’s National Golf Club in Bedminster, New Jersey is lashing out at the local health department that gave them the lowest county inspection score in May.

“Never before have we witnessed such visceral hostility from the health department,” David Schutzenhofer, the club’s general manager, told The Hill. “This is clearly nothing more than a politically motivated attack.”

The Somerset County Department of Health’s May findings were first reported by Forbes on Wednesday. The health department found a total of 18 violations, nine of which “may result in an unacceptable health risk.”

The most concerning findings were improper “separation of raw meat and raw eggs from ready-to-eat food,” “food protected from contamination” and “food contact surfaces properly cleaned.” The inspector noted that the person in charge of the kitchen at the time of review failed to “demonstrate knowledge of food safety.”

The United States Department of Agriculture says properly practicing food safety can help prevent foodborne illness. The department stated in 2022 that foodborne illnesses lead to an estimated 128,000 hospitalizations and 3,000 deaths each year.

The club has since corrected some of the violations, elevating its health grade from a C to B, according to Forbes. A different person in charge of the club’s kitchen was in charge during the follow-up review.

“We operate one of the most immaculate golf facilities in the country, and we take immense pride in our standards of cleanliness, safety, and hospitality,” Schutzenhofer told The Hill.
