Jack Nicklaus gives Good Good a Golf Lesson

let’s go here let’s Let’s go to the fundamentals okay yeah let’s do it okay first of all let me have another ball what’s going on everybody welcome back to this very special Good video today we are meeting the legend himself Jack Nicholas we are so thankful to Play Yellow for this amazing opportunity to spend some time with Jack they’re an amazing foundation started by him and Barbara and we’ve been lucky enough to work with them on a clothing collaboration that will be available at the memorial tournament this week in the fan shop thank you as well to you guys for making all of this possible it’s really hard to put it into words but we cannot be more grateful and thankful for this moment today to meet Jack not only are we going to be able to play a little golf with him putt but we also get to meet him have some lunch with him sit down pick his brain not only about golf but also his life and we’re excited to take you guys on the journey all right y’all today’s the day honestly kind of a bucket list thing for not just golfers kind of anybody today we’re going to not just meet but actually spend some time with I’d probably say one of the most admired men in the sporting world Jack Nicholas we are uh going to uh his course actually Mirfield where his tournament the memorial is hosted we’re going to be putting with him we’re going to do some stuff on the range with him and last night all of us were kind of getting together some questions to ask him and do kind of like a podcast vibe i got I got one question i got one question that I’m super excited to ask i was practicing it and I’m excited to see Jack’s answer to this he’s got so much history not only in the game of golf but just in life itself and I’m just really excited to kind of dive into some obviously some golf related questions for you guys but some more of the personal side of things that maybe you didn’t get to see on the golf course you know maybe some rounds that he had that he you know that weren’t on camera that weren’t filmed that’s what I’m interested in i want to learn about him cuz when it comes to athletes he might be one of the most philanthropic guys in the whole world of sports with what he’s done with his platform and everything especially with Play Yellow the tournament i know him and Colonel Rooney have a great relationship and do a lot of stuff for the vets as well i don’t know he’s just the embodiment of someone who took his success and his platform and used it to serve others and help others so I’m really excited to learn about that we we we seem pretty chill about it now but like when we got the news we were filming with Jack it was kind of just elation in the whole room we were all like “Wow this is an amazing opportunity.” I’m very excited yeah me too it’s going to be a blast yeah like Bubby said we’ve all we’ve all hopefully got some good questions to ask them yeah we’ll see you guys there I guess let’s do it all right boys we’re here old Mirrorfield the best driving range in the world also like 360 it’s so cool that’s not even a Oh it is a pudding no it’s not no it’s just It’s not even a pudding that’s just the grass here dude oh damn that’s beautiful this is unbelievable we’re getting to meet the one and only Jack Nicholas today just the fact that we’re all getting to meet him is insane one of the greatest of all time just the fact that we’re even in this situation is insane shout out to Play Yellow uh for making this happen shout out to Mirfield Village shout out to the Memorial Golf Tournament all right y’all we’ve made it to the putting green here at Mirfield and we are joined by Amy who is the CEO of Children’s Miracle Network thank you for joining us Amy we appreciate you thank you we appreciate all of you being here so we’re excited to be here and celebrate at Mirfield Village our Play Yellow program which is a program that Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals has with Jack and Barbara Nicholas and the PGA Tour where we support children’s healthcare through the game of golf oo this is amazing before we get started with this lesson with Jack Nicholas I’m super excited um Amy’s going to tell us a little bit more about what’s going on today okay so Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals we are a national not forprofit that supports 170 children’s hospitals all around the United States and Canada and we provide that support through raising of funds through our corporate programs and our corporate partnerships so we’re excited that Play Yellow one of our programs is here this week at Jack’s Place with the big memorial tournament presented by Workday and we’re incredibly excited to have all of the team here from Good Golf so that we can raise more awareness about the needs for supporting children’s healthcare hey guys how you doing how you doing how’s it going Mr nicholson look Sean yes sir nice to meet you i’m Mo mo pleasure to meet you i’m Tom tom how you doing good nice to meet you brad Dkey nice to meet you yes sir blake one nice to meet you we’ve met before we have yes sir nice to meet you how you doing Matt nice to meet you nice to meet you Jack kevin how you doing brother well thanks for coming and doing met you before too i think maybe I’ve done I’ve done a lot of stuff with Kunar Rooney so that might be what you do yes sir yes sir so what are you guys doing we’re going to do a little putting maybe get some putting lessons i know some of us might need it so yeah I need one so you guys help me now I’m first of all I’m going to apologize for not letting you guys play today we had it it sent I think it sent a bad message and I’ll tell you why you know we had we we closed the golf course yesterday for uh the superintendent did for hund and some guys who paid a lot of money to be part of the memorial club and they play every Saturday before the tournament and I think to send out a group that’s not the tournament the next day it sends a bad message to them and so I apologize for that totally but anyway hope you understand that and understand why we did that so but we’d love to have you come back and play anytime you want we’ll organize it and Yes sir appreciate that when you get want to come in town more than welcome okay thank you sir thank you very much absolutely well you got a beautiful place here it is a pretty place how many of you been here before i think most of us most of us have this is on the road trip this is my first time yeah first time your first time that’s why you only got one good on your hand rather than two exactly exactly i heard that other one tell me where did good good golf come from where where do you get that name uh I guess technically Kendrick you came up with the name right i did maybe yes I did yeah he had the idea of the name and we kind of brought it to fruition so So what do you think of beans right here two punts that are good oh good good that’s where it came from like I heard that before i heard that one first time I heard that is when I played with Clinton he says “Yeah he I’ll give you yours if you give me mine.” Good there you go good good so technically they came up with the idea jack’s idea you don’t understand that when you’re dealing with a president the president president wants to make his putt no matter how long it is so he sits there with a 10 or 12 foot clutch he says “How long is yours?” You know yours is good is mine good too that’s exactly right so he’s an OG good that’s right the first good member honorary that’s right i’m an honorary good member that’s right yes sir you are well what changes can the players expect this year at u on the course cuz I know that this is your baby and man we didn’t make it one change this year no changes from last year huh nope not not a change we didn’t uh the year before we changed 16 a little bit the players had you know complained as you might say cuz they had a hard time with the hole it was a very difficult hole and so we opened up the front of it okay and uh uh but I left the last half of the hole the same but the first hole I left them a bail out to play short if they want to they could do that and um 17 uh we we had some extra yardage there so we went ahead took the yardage but we also tied it into a a tee that was shorter so if we if we had wind conditions were such that I got do that that makes sense but that’s the only changes we made then we didn’t make anything this year i’m sure Scotty’s going to be happy to hear that yeah he he played very well last year played very well last year he had a good round yesterday didn’t he mhm yeah 600 600 he’s a contention he’s five back or so but that’s he’s always at six that’s not Yeah that’s not not out of the grass for him so well Jack real quick question for you um obviously we’re here with Play Yellow i think a lot of us guys would be very curious to know like what inspired you and Barbara to start Play Yellow oh I mean I don’t know whether you know the story or not so I’ll just tell you the story yeah it started back about Oh I’d say 19 probably 67 or eight and our minister’s son contracted Euing Saroma and uh Mary Lou called Barbara and says “Would you Jack talked to talked to Craig?” And I said “Of course Jack talk to Craig.” So I I went over to talked to him saw him we sort of developed a relationship and uh one day I came I won a tournament i called him after the round and I said “How you doing Craig?” He says he said “Joy I enjoyed it today.” He says he says “You know why you won today?” And I said “Why is that Craig?” He says he says “I wore my yellow lucky shirt wear my lucky yellow shirt.” And I said “Well that’s fantastic.” I said I said “Well if if Craig can wear a yellow shirt for me I can wear a yellow shirt for him.” So for many years I wore yellow shirt on Sunday and then the Masters in ‘ 86 uh I was just sort of rumaging through my suitcase looking for a shirt what to wear and I saw this yellow shirt and I said “I turned the department.” I said “Part what do you think?” She says “Go for it craig would love it.” I wore the yellow shirt on Sunday so after that and I won masters then we had to tell the story so I told the story and then we did we did some small stuff with play yellow type things and then uh a children’s miracle network uh came to us and uh said they’d like to figure out through golf how can we raise $100 million so we went to the tour we talked to Jay we said we would like to raise it but we’d raise it in each of the towns that that we we had a fence in but we wouldn’t we wouldn’t let it leave the town other words who was raised in Omaha Nebraska would stay in Omaha Nebraska cool very cool and uh the tourist said absolutely so they were they got on board so there was there was you know quite a few things and a lot of the manufacturers stepped on to it and I think I don’t know what you’ve raised now but I know through about the first three and a half four years it was about 13540 million where are you now yeah we’re over 150 million right now over 150 have we reached the 5year period yet uh just past five years yeah so that was the goal was 100 million in 5 years and now we’re 150 million so and I don’t think that’s stopping we’re not stopping oh no it’s we doubled from 24 or from 23 to 24 we doubled the amount of raise that we in one year and I think you know as Jack mentioned the idea that the money raised locally stays locally that’s how all of our programs work so we have 400 colleges and universities that do dance marathons and they raise money that goes to the children’s hospital that’s in the community where they’re where they’re at same thing if you go to a Dairy Queen a Marriott a Walmart a Costco Ace Hardware any of our partners and they say “Do you want to give your 48 cents and change?” That goes directly back to the local community that you’re in so it doesn’t go to a corporate headquarters to get redistributed so we often say money raised locally stays locally and helps the kids right in that community and you guys here you’re going to you’re going to promote the devil out of us so we’ve got Exactly you’re going to you’re going to take it next week to 200 million right yes sir we’re going to do our put them right on your back right yes sir exactly well you know I’m I’m not a tech guy so you know and what you guys do I wouldn’t have a clue so I mean somebody asked me how to bring bring you guys up i wouldn’t hey that’s okay that’s all right i would I would have I wouldn’t have any idea but that’s that’s that’s beside the point your your audience is a heck of a lot younger than I am you want to get some putting lessons guys looks like you guys have been endorsed by some putting company that’s right just a little bit yeah a little bit of Odyssey these are Huh i’ve never seen one of these that’s a good Callaway you got this grip and this putter you got use you actually use a golf ball in it we do we do right here callaway is that Callway yes sir that’s right let me see what kind of putt am I going to hold well that’s a good lesson right off the bat is what kind of putt am I going to hold yeah you got a good I don’t know i never hit one of these things before that’s right that should break a little right shouldn’t it oops i’d say so here you go it is break tell you what I have a shorter putter here if you want it if you want a shorter and that that’s really long he plays with a 29 in definitely left i did not I would not have read that in here i would have bet I would bet that would have broken towards the ocean which way is the ocean we kind of got one on both sides which one you want johnny Miller would have said it went towards Lake Mad I think boy look at this thing this thing’s really little aliens and alien putters hard to hard to line up this thing going yo well maybe that’s I bet you make it with Well let’s find out let’s find out first one the greatest thing how do you do hold it up here yeah you got to imagine i got to try to figure out how to grip this thing now that’s right i got it i got it maybe I’m using the wrong hand maybe I don’t get lefty let’s do it hand maybe not what if you use this end up does this end better that’s right that didn’t work that didn’t work okay we knocked him with this now that I’ve got the line he didn’t stretch he didn’t stretch dan you found your putter found your putter what a great putter you never washing that putter never washed that remember I kissed that putter down that’s right i got all Now I got all the fertilizer on my lips and everything that’s right so are you familiar that uh there’s going to be a couple there’s going to be people jumping in on Friday afternoon uh the Patriot Parachute team on 18 fairway you guys are doing it i think you’re going to see Tom and I myself i you too yes sir have you ever done it before this is my second time jumping yes i’m going against my will you lost oh yeah this is from your video first time yes sir you’re going to jump out of a perfectly good airplane yeah but I heard there’s room for one more if you want to go up i’m I’m all right so what are we going to do we got to Am I doing putting lessons i think you’re going to give one of us a putting lesson if that’s what Oh my lord who was the worst he’s a pretty good I’m not I’m not bad but I’d love I think Sharp get up there all right perfect where you want me you want me You want me putting over here yeah yeah you knock it’s not the same one I Yeah sure eventually knocked it in that’s right what are you doing there i’m l line lining up this is I’m lining it up you hate that yeah i think that looks ridiculous all right that’s the dumbest thing I’ve ever done we’ll be We’ll be done doing that Jack i see guys doing that i’m sitting there saying “How in the world can they sit there and give all this guy?” Yeah what is that nonsense what is that nonsense just take the ball hit the player behind it knock it hole pretty good pretty good fundamentals right there not bad what there was of it you just need a little bit more of it hey hey that’s not That was a pretty good putt thank you that way was a good putt come on now why does he need a putt less he’s got a good stroke you know you want to know the fundamentals that I think that are good on you get the ball there maybe no no no let’s go here let’s Let’s go the fundamentals okay let’s do it okay first of all let me have another ball okay let’s stand up and line it up okay drop it on his eye y pretty close right that was pretty close yeah let’s try it again i think we can do better than that where is your eye right there there we go hit it sounds good right on top okay that’s good so you’re on line the second The second thing is your putter shaft okay let’s see your putter shaft there line it up put your hand your putter shaft so your putter shaft here fundamentally should not be back behind it shouldn’t be way in front of it should be either even e even or just slightly in front okay yep and you are okay your hands are opposite polar so they’re like they’re you got one one going this way and one going this way they sort of Mhm not twisted i I do a little differently i take it under so this this hand can’t twist anymore mhm to pick it and then I take this here and I usually basically put with the right hand under there and guide with the left okay love that h kind of like that locks it in place that’s pretty good then you got that stupid line on there you line that up with the stupid lines you hit on what a dumb stupid line that is you hit all the stupid lines all together then you take it back and hit it perfect that’s a pretty good stroke man jack that felt really solid i kind of like this this tucked i’ll tell you where I got that i got that in 1955 I think it was and I can’t remember first in there’s two brothers they were foot brothers from California and they both played ended up playing the tour and but one of them they they they start there and put it this way and they put the left hand over this way so that they couldn’t turn it any further yeah I like that locks it in place locked it in place and then put the right hand behind it to where you’re pushing it to the hole so I sort of took that position this way rather than putting things this way which it twists all kinds which is all right i I took it and sort of went that way and I like the ability to be able to not twist it anymore but and guide everything with the right and keep it from going left with the left hand i put it that way all my life and you kind of putt like with an open stance too well I put I put it which I love i put I put it you know I even make it Jack i I was I’m left eye dominant and when I stand over the ball this way left eye I don’t see anything mhm and I don’t know why but I can’t so I tried to figure out how can I make my right eye dominant because I think your right eye gets you down and looks down the line so I got that’s why I got back behind the ball here see now I’m looking down the line right here i have my right hand behind my right hand here this thing behind it put my left hand underneath it here i am a little bit open i went right in here and then pushed underneath it see i love that beautiful that’s the way I put it i like your butt and you want 18 majors with it Jack so I think it worked i’m glad I didn’t have to use one yeah my gosh look at this joke i don’t I think these are horrible looking things might be all right if all right if you want breakfast and make another omelette oh yeah climb climb climb that would be all right anyway that’s a really tough putt yeah it is do you have any idea how fast you were swinging it back in your in your prime how fast you were going oh they never measured it do Do you have any guesses or do you mean compared to like guys today and I would think I’d be pretty much equivalent to But I was the longest on tour when I played oh here I You know you guys have seen my money club before it was you no I don’t think so i don’t think so that’s sick that money clip I won in 1963 oh wow pj Championship going strong driving contest it says here it says driving distance i think it says driving distance winner yeah it does it’s almost That’s cool 341 yards 17 in wow 341 that’s like 550 today 350 yards 17 in a wooden golf club a wooden golf club 11 12 1/2°ree 1945 Tobby Armor driver with a dynamic S shaft and you know red fiber insert do you think you would have hit it a lot further with today’s equipment about 50 50 yards 50 yards further yeah I think that’s difference with the golf ball is about 50 yards where it was when I played wow wow you think it’s more the golf ball and less of the club uh well I think that the golf ball if you ever tried to take that old golf that golf club that I used and hit today’s golf ball with it and hit it about 150 yards that’s funny doesn’t have any there’s no trampoline effect anything else so the combination once they changed the composite golf the golf ball from 1930 let’s say till n till 1995 increased about 5 to seven yards because of the quality of how the manufacturer made it from 1995 to 2005 before they finally put some kind of a line in the sand is went increased another 50 yards so that’s 50 yards in in 10 years so I s I sort of liken it to the old British small ball that we used to play and I hit that 50 yards further than I hit the the other one i mean it was just unbelievable how far we hit it oh we love playing it it was fun to play but it just just courses you just destroyed golf courses with it go back in fact I go back to 19 1964 because playing the small ball then at the British Open at St andrews now at the 18th fold we used to play a longer tee there you know they play they walk off the 17th screen now and the tea is right there well there’s a tee back over to the left back about 25 yards that’s where we used to play we played there in ‘ 64 i drove it on the green the first round there with a driver and then I drove it on the green the next three rounds with the three oh my goodness but that’s how far the ball went compared comparatively speaking it was a big difference but uh you asked me how my ball speed probably was i I would guess my club head speed was somewhere in 25 or 30 I suppose mhm ball speed I don’t know 190 I suppose i don’t know i I have no idea i mean I’m just guessing cuz that’s that’s sort of comparable to what’s today yeah for sure i think that’s I think what what is what are the top guys 125 or 30 say the longest hitters yeah 20 130 club probably yeah bryson yeah he’s Yeah probably about 130 is that what he is i think so about 190 ball 195 about Yeah he’s right he’s 195 yeah he’s long he He actually controls the ball quite well with it with what he does yeah I actually am very very impressed with what he does took himself transformed his body done a pretty nice job of learning learning how to keep continue to control the ball all the same length shavs upright he does a nice job he’s you know the mad scientist did prevailed he did he did he did he did a nice job well I got another question for you Jack if you don’t mind oh sure great um was there ever a moment in your golf career when you were playing that you ever stopped and asked yourself like is this for me well you know I played all sports and uh I I eliminate all the other sports by process of elimination really i mean I played quarterback and my hands weren’t big enough when the ball got wet I had trouble holding keeping you know wanted to pass it basketball i I was recruited at Ohio State for basketball and uh but I knew that uh I wasn’t I wasn’t tall enough or quick enough to to really play i mean I would I would have been they won the NCAA when I would have played i would I would have p been ninth or 10th man on that team and uh but I decided I didn’t want to do that i Where was I going to go with that you I wasn’t going to go anywhere baseball was probably my best sport but to get 15 guys to come out in the middle of the summer to a dry park and try to wait for those guys they never showed up anyway i go I could go to the golf course 8:00 in the morning you know we had in those days we had to tee off before 8:00 at Sciota and so I’d get up in the morning i walk about by my walk to the golf course about from here to the tent green i walked through a backyard of some folks that I never met they never said one word to me ever never objected their house is on the fourth tea at Sciota and I I mean I and I was oblivious to to doing what I did but it’s I went right through their backyard every day can you imagine doing that today yeah incredible i mean seriously and they they must have been very nice people they must have realized that here’s this kid he’s not hurting anybody said fine but anyway I did that i I go out and I I hit off the fourth hole the par three hit T- shot on five go play the ninth hole and get to the first T before 8:00 so I could do that and I play play in the morning to come in and then the juniors couldn’t play again till after four o’clock so I’d go you know play golf and go see Jack Grout for most of the rest of the the afternoon and then go back and play another 18 in the afternoon and then that’s why I ended up gravitating to golf I could something that I could do you asked me I would never think that there was something else well did I think about those other sports sure i love those other sports but I also knew that I would never be as good at those other sports as I could have been at golf that’s why I gravitated there so I didn’t have any I didn’t have any whatifs i was very I was very lucky most a lot of guys have a whatif yeah i feel very blessed that I never had that what I if I hadn’t played golf I’d probably been a baseball player i was player i was a switch hitting catcher and you I was that was probably my best position i was probably good at that but you know but that’s my dad was a good athlete my dad played football basketball and baseball at Ohio State mhm and he played pro football and he he started the golf team at his high school he also was city tennis champion so my dad was a really good athlete wow that’s awesome good jeans great jeans great jeans i hope some of it rubbed off but anyway he was he was he was a really good athlete and so you know and he loved sports he loved his son and uh he introduced me to everything we went and played everything together and uh you know we used to go and we had two trees out in the yard lot next to us and we used to you know pract extra points and field goals through there you know punting the football out there and throwing and shooting hoops at the backyard yeah i figured it all out i did the same thing with my kids i never I was never a gym rat i hated the gym and uh I I ran but I went to football practice where my kids play football and I used to go throw to receivers kick with the kickers and uh used to go to they at Ohio State too when Woody was coaching used to go kick with the kickers i used to go to they never had enough kids to really have many scrimmages so I used to go scrimmage with the basketball team and then used to pitch batting practice when baseball came around so maybe awesome so I I I was a I was I was a junkie same as you guys are you guys are all golf junkies i’m a sports junkie that’s what I was and I loved it i still love it i still I’m a golf fan i mean I sit there and watch you know I I I know nothing about hockey don’t even care about hockey sat there and watched every second of the Panther game last night so you know I I have one question for you sir kind of like looking back through it was there ever like a certain moment or moments that were massive like to you to get to where you are today and instrumental and kind of whether it’s in your golf career or you as a person is there like a certain moment you hold on to where you’re very grateful for i probably biggest moment I ever had was when I met one Barbara Bash met her my first during orientation week in college we met girl I was dating was talking to her they were both both both presidents of high school sororities and uh I walked up and Mary the gal that that I was dating introduced me to Barbara and uh it was bye-bye Mary see you later and off Barbara and I went not not really but as far as golf goes which you I think the most important thing that happened to me is when I I I made a putt about 8 feet long to win the US amer when I was 19 beat Charlie Co when I made that putt it proved to me that I could do what I needed to do when I had to do it and from then on I said “Well I’ve done this before i need to do it be able to do it again.” And sure I mean I went you go through times where the next year I I think I I probably should have won the US Open the next year until I I I looked at the leaderboard when I got done with 12 holes in the last round i was five under par there was Palmer 4under Hogan 4under uh Croll 4under uh Cherry 4 uh Fleck 4 they were all the names are on the leaderboard and I went down the 13th hole and I hit it at about 12 feet and uh I was playing with Hogan i hit my first butt about that far by the hole and I had a ball mark or a big spike marking up the ball mark with a ball mark in it and I didn’t have the presence of I was too nervous as a young kid to even think that I could fix it i didn’t ask i mean I knew after I knew done with it I knew I could fix it but I didn’t have the presence to you know if you as a 20-year-old kid a lot of times you don’t have that presence and I did i missed the putt and then I threwed the next green par 15 was par three then 16 I hit it like this and missed the putt 17 I missed about a 12-footer and then 18 I took three from the French to lose to Palmer now probably best thing that ever happened to me and I won that tournament i’ve been scratching my ears out here like this and you know so it probably down earth i said “What what did that tell me?” Well it told me that other people have trouble too everybody has Everybody has to learn how to finish you have to learn and you learn by your mistakes you learn what what what are the what are the things that that teach you and I I always kid kid at Palmer i said “Well heck if I hadn’t shot 39 that last nine holds Palmer nobody ever heard of you you know.” He Yeah and if I had three putt 13 times and open nobody ever heard of you either so you know we always had our we always had our little back and forth arie and I were very close with that but anyway uh you know you learn from those things and and so the next time it rolled around you know you figure out how to do it and how to finish but that putt at Broadmore told me I knew I could could finish yeah it’s awesome thank you that’s awesome how uh how excited are you for Barbara to win this year really neat i mean we didn’t we didn’t never even dreamed of Barbara and Barbara’s got received every award there has been in golf and yet she we didn’t we we didn’t think about it here and Gary called me and he says “Dad,” he says “Has the captain’s club ever thought about mom?” No I guess no but never been brought up so I called Charlie Meechum you know Charlie who Charlie was former you know he’s one of our captains former commissioner of LPJ way so I talked to Charlie i said Charlie it’s been brought up Gary brought up this says never he says never entered my mind either he says let me let me let me give me give me 24 hours i said okay he called me back 24 hours Jack he says I can most the captain come everybody unanimous we did this yeah it’s kind of neat i mean she’s been you know been my my heart and soul for you know 65 years now it’s a lot congratulations so it’s a long time to put up with me I’ll tell you that and uh to have her be honored here in her hometown where she grew up where I grew up uh where she’s had been so much to this tournament and the tour all the tour wives everything whatever things she’s contributed to the game pretty pretty special yeah that’s awesome incredible i got one question uh who’s your dream foresome well it’s five it’s my four boys i love But but but we can’t play five so you want you want the ones that play tour no that’s fine no that’s a great answer my answer’s always been my dad my future son and then my my little brother yeah but if you if you if you take away my family I think and I I would go back and I’d never played with Bobby Jones i never saw him hit a shot i would have loved to have played around the golf with Jones I love playing golf with Hogan hogan was just he was unbelievable to watch play because he was so good he just he he struck the ball so so beautifully and I think Tiger I mean Tiger is just uh I remember the last time I played with Tiger in a tournament was at uh Valhalla he won down there that year that I last time I played your it was 2000 i said I said after I finished that round I said time to pass the torch he just he he’s really because I I like Tiger tiger I Tiger’s really good where would you guys play uh well if I had one round to play I’d probably go to Pebble Beach wow yeah i like like what my record was at Pebble Beach and what Pebble Beach is I did I chose to end my career at at St andrews because of what I think St andrews has been to the game of golf uh my second choice was that was obviously Augusta so my last two tournaments were August and St andrews and my last US Open was uh at at Pebble Beach i love Pebble Beach three putt at my last green oh tough i could I had tears in my eyes i knocked it on the green in two at Pebble and uh I was 60 years old I guess at the time i knocked it on in two and I and I had a putt from about from here to that fl that hole there probably about what 25 30 feet and I had tears my eyes i hit it halfway i had stubbed it and and you know it was all right but anyway it was a nice way to nice place to finish up is there one shot in your career that you ever think back on that you want back i don’t I don’t have any that I want back that I played well that Okay and that that leads to my next question is there one shot that you want back for like somebody else two of them two of them yeah trevor’s chip in 72 at at Mirfield had he had he had he not chipped the ball in at 17 I would have won the British Open I would have held all four of them at the same time because I held the I held the PGA from the previous year and and I won the Open and I won the Masters in the Open that would have won the Brit or US Open then Watson’s chip in on 17 at Pebble Beach yeah it’s Jack Whitaker’s on the 18th grade telling me it’s how how great it is to be in my time me winning my fifth US Open what was that what was that watson running around the green yeah he was running for sure yes he was that was a great chip all I mean but you know I have never never had I’ve never had a problem with somebody doing something good of course yeah yeah i I never wanted to win by somebody’s mistakes you know win by my own play i’d rather I’d rather see that somebody else screw up course and they both they both you know 77 at Turnberry that one of the great tournaments we ever we ever had watson and I played we both played great he just played better than I did he played a shot better so you know well done that’s just golf that’s golf that’s golf that’s it’s it’s it’s competition in a game that’s what it’s all about was uh Sam Sneed kind of like in your era or is he a little bit before you i played a lot of Sam my first time I played with Sam I was 16 years old i played in the I was playing the Ohio Open in Marietta Ohio and uh I entered the tournament and I got asked to play an exhibition with Sam Steed on Friday of the tournament and so the Ohio State golf coach was running the tournament Bob Keeper and I said “Keep I got an invitation to play with Sam Steed on Friday afternoon.” I said “Is there any chance that I can get a a late early starting time in the tournament?” I’m 16 years old and he said “Absolutely i think we could probably get that arranged.” So So I got uh I played late on on Thursday shot 76 I shot 70 Friday morning got in an airplane uh I normally remember the guy’s name but anyway it was an old E18 that was old that’s old twin engine trigeear airplanes and we flew up to uh Warren Grimes his name warren flew me up to or band I played with Sam Pete Dye and Bob Ross wow oh yeah what a forome what a you know knew Bob or not but Bob Bob was in he was from Springfield High and then played St louis pro in St louis we played and Sam I I just watched Sam all day and had fantastic rhythm in the so forth so I went back to Marietta that night and I I decided I was going to be Sam the next day so I went out and I shot 64 in the morning sure won the high high open when I was 16 with that 6472 that day and my dad always told me he’s like “If you’re ever struggling with your swing just go watch Sam.” Oh his swing was fantastic sam of course Sam hated to lose you knew that i mean he he just hated to lose if you I mean I played Sam in a shell match in 1963 at Pebble Beach and I hold about a 15footer or whatever it was at the last hole to beat him fuming the steam was just coming out of his head you know but I gave that put it to Jacqueline he was captain at at at at Burkedale in in ‘ 69 sam was Sam was so hot that I did that i mean it was the right thing to do and and and you know I’ve every captain since then they’ve all said “Oh absolutely it was the right thing.” You know he says “I would hope my player would do the same thing.” Yeah but you know that that was just Sam i mean I played a lot of golf with Sam it’s awesome we played a lot of practice rounds together i enjoyed it we always And to try to get five bucks off of Sam was that fun do you have a REDR cup preview how’s it going to look you sure yes sir i don’t know whether Keegan will play or not as as captain it probably won’t certainly qualified to play i think he’s probably make he’ll make the team probably I would assume yeah he’s been playing some golf yeah he’s played played very well both teams are good mhm both teams are really good should be a good rider cup the Ryder Cups become a competition oh yeah you know it wasn’t a competition you know and of course uh in 77 when I went to uh Lord Darby who was the president of the PGA over there took Henry Poe with me i said “Henry I want to go talk to Lord Darby and see what talk about what we did.” And and that was year wise skipped the uh rider cap to go go on a sheep hunt and you know guys love to make the rider cap nobody wanted to play the matches it wasn’t they weren’t worth playing because we won every time and I so I went to John and I said John I said said you know you guys now are the European tour you’re no longer Great Britain and Ireland and I said let’s why don’t you add those guys in you get you can bring in a bias and a langanger yeah and you bring in some really great players and guys that who there was a couple of Spaniards and they said you could bring those guys in in now you get then you got a competition competition and beat beat beat beat beat beat beat beat beat beat beat beat beat beat beat beat beat beat beat beat beat beat our rear end most of the time since then it was it was a I think it was really good for the Yeah yeah you know of course then we played here in 87 which was first time that the Europeans won on our soil i got be I got to be the first captain to lose on US soil one story I heard inside they mentioned something about a McDonald’s glass that Barbara got you that had a lot of significance to Yeah she uh we at at Oak Tree in Oklahoma City uh I think I think we played the PJ there what 87 maybe i’m from Oklahoma so yeah7 played oak tree bunch yep 87 yeah i cared for oak tree it’s all right it’s tough it’s it’s tough it’s tough and also in the middle of August they’re both hot and dickens in there and anyway I never I I was 47 years old i hadn’t really prepared very well and I went to the tournament missed the cut the only thing about worse about missing the cut is having to stay around the weekend i was working for ABC at the time is to have to stand around talk about all the other guys played over the weekend that I didn’t enjoy that a lot so anyway that night the night they missed the cut Michael was with us barbara Micro went down i why I didn’t go I don’t remember but they went down to McDonald’s and had got got a hamburger and Barbara brought back the next morning I had a cup of orange juice sitting on my table with this little sippy cup she got right now there is no excuse for not being properly prepared i still have that cup of hope oh yeah absolutely oh excuse yeah i mean if you’re properly prepared and you get beat that’s okay but if you haven’t bothered to prepare and you get beat you deserve it you still have that cup absolutely well I think we’re going to do lunch do we want to go up there grab some lunch maybe a milkshake whatever you guys want all right beautiful you guys got what kind what you need here yes sir i think so thank you so much appreciate the time oh sure hey my pleasure it’s not doing anything and again I apologize for We wanted to give you a gift this is our our merchandise with the Play Yellow logo as well as the Good logo as well thanks guys absolutely thank you so much for coming we got a good haul what you got in there you got some golf balls or something i think it’s all the apparel no golf hoodie it’s probably a little heavy yeah it’s probably the hoodie yeah it’s a pretty golf shirt absolutely yes sir thank you well you guys are welcome back anytime you want to come appreciate it thank you appreciate you know that thank you so much nice i enjoy the conversation yeah thanks for talking actually you guys actually came up with some intelligent questions i don’t think a lot of people know but at American Dunes you took on the whole renovation pro bono like you did it you handled the design and everything and you offered your services for free it’s not really a question it’s just something amazing that you did that at American Dunes for full do that yeah it’s just they speak so highly of you out there it was amazing to I love Dan Rooney i think Dan’s got a great job and what he wanted to do in his program i mean I’d been chairman of a Patriot Day for Mhm gosh I don’t know 10 years prior to that but anyway Dan came to me and he was nervous as could be about asking me if I would help do American Dunes and he started going through his spiel and I said “Dan you do the spiel i’m in i’m in i got it.” Easy sale there easy it’s the exa exact story he tells too it’s cool to hear from your perspective yeah he a great guy and I was delighted to do it we there we took out I took out about 2,000 trees oh cuz I played it when it was still Grand Haven Golf Club as a kid i grew up playing there some and sure I mean the renovation I saw from above tubes i jumped in with the patron parachute team it’s looks beautiful every way around yeah yeah well we then mother nature took out about another 500 really yeah big storm came through with a lot of the trees that weren’t protected that we had left open and so basically we left the perimeter trees at a few few odd spots within the golf course but mostly the golf course is uh you know all sand which is what he said in he’d already named it American Dunes before I got there so we began to find the dunes ready for a milkshake huh yeah man dude I’ve been thinking I’ve been thinking about that milkshake since I got here jack that’s my love it okay guys well thank you so much sure my pleasure move upstairs [Music]

  1. This guy is pure class. I could listen to Jack tell his stories for hours. Seems so down to earth, a real role model for all sportsmen and women today.

  2. What an amazing experience for you all to be able to spend that quality time with the great Jack Nicklaus! Thx for sharing this video & for all the fantastic content you continue to provide!!!

  3. The common denominator between jack and tiger is they had a deep relationship with thier fathers. The fathers were everything to them and they were everything to thier fathers.

  4. Guy is a class act.. 20 years ago he stopped and took an epic picture for me and asked “did u get it buddy?) yes Jack I got it and I’m honored to share Ohio with u

  5. You don’t call Jack Nicholas the greatest golfer in history. What’s up, brother?😂😂😂 who is that donkey who said what’s up, brother? The guy in the gray sweatshirt, the blue and black hat with a beard blue pants he’s a donkey😂

  6. What a great time with Jack. I grew up watching his career but never got to hear him reminisce like he did with your group. Truly a prince of a man…they don't make them like Jack any more. Thanks for making it happen and sharing it with us viewers.

  7. I would have loved for them to ask Jack, a little more in depth, what his opinion on YouTube Golf is and the evolution of golf in this current era.

  8. This is one of the best YouTube golf videos I have seen and not a shot struck. What a life he has had beside his wonderful wife. His charity work and the way they insisted the funds are kept where they are raised is so special. His recollection of his time with other golfing greats is priceless. Great job guys.

  9. I had the pleasure to meet Mr Nicklaus in 1998 in the UK when he was opening a course that he designed in the North West of England. I spoke to him before the round and when he completed, he was kind enough to sign his book My Story which was also signed by his son Steven who was attending the event as a co designer on the project. Jack was struggling that day with a bad hip but he was the perfect gentleman and played the full 18 holes against Ian Woosnam. I asked when he finished signing autographs what will you do now, his answer "flying home to be with my wife Barbara". And here he is nearly 30 years later still giving his wife all the credit she deserves. He is a very special man, and I still treasure that book with the Golden Bears signature on the front page. I will never forget that day for as long as I live because he made me feel at ease and made me smile. Because that's what the great man does just like he did with you guys.

  10. How amazing to get that kind of time to talk to Jack Nicklaus. He was my favorite growing up and what he has done in his charitable work and promoting the game is as legendary as his playing. Absolutely loved this video!

  11. Jack is a legend, but this good good “team” not only doesn’t deserve this attention, they shouldn’t even be granted the ability to meet Jack. He was so gracious to meet this non worthy team. They are a joke.

  12. Jack is a legend, but this good good “team” not only doesn’t deserve this attention, they shouldn’t even be granted the ability to meet Jack. He was so gracious to meet this non worthy team. They are a joke.
While Jack was talking, multiple good good guys were looking elsewhere, not giving this legend the respect of looking at him. Shame!

  13. 45 minute video of Jack Nicklaus talking. I watched every minute of it and loved it! What a legend and great human being all around.

  14. All credit to Tiger, but the way Jack behaved ON and OFF the field as a player, family man and role model plus his numbers makes him the greatest golfer until further somebody comes along to beat that!

  15. The class and just the knowledge, feel like I took something from this little lesson. Matt better always keep that putter

  16. Jack's 9 out at Bay Creek in Cape Charles is an excellent test of golf. I absolutley love the facility. The whole experience was nicer before they renovated the clubhouse and repurposed the breath taking Pro Shop with huge vaulted ceiling and exposed wood beams in to a banquet hall, while throwing the new Pro Shop in a bland commercial feeling space.

  17. Without a doubt this is the most interesting golf video I have ever seen.

Jack is 85, to stand there that length of time sharing his stories with those kids, his memory so sharp, was quite amazing.

  18. Jack Nicklaus is a true legend. All class, respectful, willing to share. And you guys treated him with the respect he deserves. Awesome video 😊
