reigning US Open champion Bryson Dashambo is gearing up to defend his crown and he’s under no illusion about the challenge ahead the 31-year-old who stunned the golf world last year with a dramatic 55yd bunker shot to beat Rory Mroy returns to the notoriously punishing Oakmont Country Club for what promises to be a fierce title defense dashambo is aiming to become the first back-to-back US Open champion since Brooks Kepka in 2018 but before teeing off at Oakmont next week he’s squeezing in one last competitive tuneup at LIV Golf Virginia amid his busy schedule he managed a practice round at Oakmont and the course wasted no time in reminding him why it’s dubbed the beast sharing the experience on his YouTube channel Dambo was stunned by the brutal conditions especially the thick unforgiving rough oh my gosh that is cooked beyond belief he exclaimed after locating his ball in the sixth hole that’s more than half baked there it’s burnt to a crisp lining up a tough chip shot he admitted bluntly i’ve got nothing that’s what Oakmont does to you that’s some thick rough despite grinding out an even par round Dambo admitted Oakmont got the better of him that day this place ate my lunch today he said but I’m glad to get a little practice in the history here is amazing what an honor to play it the final hole nearly offered redemption as Dshambo narrowly missed a birdie putt on the ninth drawing both frustration and sarcasm ump asterisk asterisk asterisk asterisk asterisk he muttered that’s even unbelievable sad but I’ll take it good practice for the open that was a lot of fun oakmont you’re a beast oakmont’s reputation precedes it the course is legendary for its lightning fast greens tight fairways punishing bunkers and rough that swallows golf balls hole it holds a record for hosting the most US Opens in history in 2025 will mark its 10th time as host the last was in 2016 when Dustin Johnson claimed victory with a four underpar finish one of the few to stay under par that week dambo echoed what many pros have said about Oakmont it wasn’t designed to be fair it was designed to be feared this course doesn’t just challenge your game it challenges your sanity before starting his practice round Deambo reflected on his past at Oakmont i played here in 2016 i finished 16th or T15 I think i don’t quite remember but I played pretty well i was leading at one point now armed with a more refined power game and growing confidence he believes he’s ready for another deep run I feel good with my swing and where my game is at i think I’ve got a great shot this year dambo first claimed the US Open title in 2020 at Wingfoot and added his second major last year at Pinehurst with another six under finish while he failed to make the cut at the Open last July he’s shown excellent form in 2025 finishing T5 at the Masters and runnerup at the PGA Championship as he prepares to take on Oakmont once again one thing is clear bryson Dshambo is ready for the fight but the course isn’t going down without a battle
