Unless you are a <3.0 hcp you do not need a pro ball. Stick with the £1-1.5 variety.
Balls like the Wilson Zip fly high, won't frisbee into OB and land softly.
Probably the only "95% true" statement on lower compression (softer) versus higher compression golf balls is that "mostly" lower will be more forgiving if you miss strike, and higher, firmer balls will give you better reponses to pure hits. Otherwise? Things such as layers, materials, and to a smaller degree dimple patterns dictate other performance such as spin, distance and stopping reliability.
I have noticed that they all will sink at about the same speed, though.
This is just confusing. I was under the impression that hard and soft was down to compression and speed so if you swing it fast use a harder ball or a ball with a higher compression rating. If you swing it slower use a lower compression rating. If you swing it fast and like a soft feeling off the face then a 85 – 90 compression rating should fit your feel. But you may lose some distance of the tee all be it a few yards. However for golfers swimging it at 85mph them a lower compression of 60 -70 will help. I've been battling the "which ball should I play" debate for ages and I have a 97 mph swing speed and got it down to 3 options. prov 1 , tp5 and wilson triad. I find all 3 balls do everything and are very durable. I haven't tried the z star yet as I lost faith in the brand using the ad333 due to it being terrible for durability.
The more firm the more ball speed but more spin in my experience (speed adds spin?) I think it comes down to individual testing. Chrome Tour doesn't lose any distance for me with less spin though the ball speed is higher with the Chrome Tour X.
