Hi performance golfers. This is Coach Carolyn and today we’re going to talk about a big misconception in golf, which is how forward shaft lean at impact gets created and why you need it. But don’t you worry, we’re going to jump into some drills and we’re going to explain all of that so you can make sure you play it like the pros. All right, so forward shaft lean. I see this so much with my students that they assume you can just preset this forward shaft lean and this forward press in your setup. And this is kind of what it’ll look like. They’ll set up to it and then they set up somewhat neutral in the beginning, but then slowly before they hit their handle starts traveling forward and this is what it looks like. And when you do this with an iron, it’s it’s not good, but you can get away with it somewhat more than with a wood. So if you had a hybrid and you did this, you’re really kind of in the woods quite literally. So we want to make sure that forward shaft lean at impact because we all know we see the pros and we see how you know that impact position there is like wow and it’s so powerful is so much you can see the power behind that position right but how do we get there and let me tell you we do not get there by pushing our hands forward. This is not how we get there. So let’s talk about how we do get there. Shockingly enough, forward chaff athleene is created by your body, by your core, and by your pelvis, more most more specifically through impact. So through impact, when you struggle with compression, when you struggle with contact, it’s because your body actually wasn’t able to shift its weight significantly enough forward towards the target. So, if you look at me now and if I’m putting my club right here and if I kind of extend it to my core, to my belly button, if I move my core back and if I kind of like spin out, if you will, now you see how that actually decreases my forward shaft lean. So, now my shaft lean is now actually going back, which we do not want. This is going to create weak shots. It’s going to create chunks. It’s going to let that iron bottom out before the ball. So, if this is what’s happening, if you’re chunking it, if you have weak shots, this is likely what’s going on. So, make sure that you look at this relationship of the button of your club to your belly button. And now, when you shift over, I’m just shifting my weight to my front foot this time. See, by me just shifting my weight over, what happens to the shaft? That’s right. It actually leans forward. And that’s exactly how forward shaft lean should be created efficiently at impact. And it’s not by my hands. I have not moved my hands. I’m going to put my hands on the club so you can see. Let’s load our weight back. You see what happens to my shaft angle here? Let’s load our weight forward. See what happens to my shaft angle here. So, that’s why if you’re struggling with compression and with those weak shots, you’re likely not transitioning well enough. All right, guys. Quick break from today’s video. Look, if you want to make massive improvements with your game and actually get way better in 2025, you got to do something different than you’ve done before. And one of those things that I highly recommend is checking out these two-day schools that my friends at Performance Golf are hosting. These are with the best coaches in the world. People you see me in videos with all the time like Martin Chuck, Andrew Rice, Erica Lark, and many more of the top coaches at awesome, awesome places all around the United States. We’re seeing great results with these schools because what we’re able to do when we see you in person is really find and fix the main root issue. Most all of us have like four or five things wrong with our swing. You can’t do them all at one time, but you can find and fix the main one thing, which we can do in person like that. We’re able to make massive improvements. I’m talking like maybe two years of improvements in only 2 days. So, if you’re looking for something to really fast track your improvement, this could be the thing that could take you to the next level. We’ll put a link in description down below. Check it out. See if there’s a spot available in a location that works for you. So, let’s jump into a couple of drills how we can make sure you get that feeling of transition better. Number one drill, narrow your stance. It’s another thing that a tendency I see with a lot of amateurs, they have too wide of a stance. When this happens, if I encourage you to do this as you’re standing there in your hallway and you’re on your on the range, wherever you’re watching this, make sure you take too wide of a stance. Humor me here. Now, try to shift your weight. Try to turn. You’ll feel a lot more stagnant and like stacked over the middle. It’s going to be much harder for you to feel that weight shift. Now, let’s narrow our stance a little bit and narrow it too too much. Let’s again exaggerate here. This is golf. We got to get these feels in. We got to exaggerate. Now, feel like you’re loading back and feel like you’re loading forward. Now, you can actually feel your weight shift. So, let’s make sure that we’re hitting a couple of balls with this narrow stance. And you can do half shots. I love half shots because half shots really tell you the story. You can’t compensate. You don’t have enough time to compensate for stuff in a half shot. So, these are going to be your best friends if you struggle with contact. So, I’ve narrowed my stance and I really want to feel like I’m loading back and I’m loading through. And you don’t just want to load your weight on the front foot in the beginning either. That’s not the solution. Just like this isn’t the solution. This isn’t the solution either. We want to make sure this is a swing, right? We go back, we go forward, we go back, we go forward. So, let’s hit a couple of shots feeling like we’re loading that back foot and then we really load that front foot going through. There we go. Nice little punch shot. And I encourage you to do this a couple of times. Hit like 10 shots like this with this narrow stance. Pretend like you’re pitching. I have an eight iron right here. You can do this with whatever iron you’d like to do it with. Shorter ones are going to be a little easier, of course. There we go. And if you slow this down, you will see that there is forward shaft lane for me because I’ve shifted my weight over to my lead foot. So again, if you’re struggling with contact, make sure your weight shift happens and make sure your weight shift number one, you allow it to go back a little bit in your back swing so you can load into that back leg and then it’s really shifting to the front in your down swing. and you’re really feeling like you have this high finish and you’re standing up straight. All your weight is on your left foot. Right foot is just decoration. You should be able to just pick that right foot right up. And I see this a lot of if you’re like this, it’s a lot of people on the range. If you walk down the range, if you picked that foot up, you’d fall backwards. That’s a feeling of yours. You’re not shifting your weight correctly. So, I hope this clarifies what forward shaft lean is and what definitely isn’t.
