SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Dakota News Now) – Mapletøn Golf Club has been a work in progress for the past couple of years, with an opening date of later this summer. This 210-acre golf club sits across from the South Dakota Veterans Cemetery and runs along Slip-Up Creek.
“We’re shooting for September 1st of this year, grow-in has been amazing thus far, it’s been a great spring for us, we’ve gotten some timely rains, not too much at one time,” said Zac Gavlak, General Manager of Mapletøn Golf Club.
“This is the first new club in 60 years in the city. So for me, there’s a lot of excitement and a lot of responsibility to do this the right way,” said Nathan Vaughn, Head Golf Professional for Mapletøn Golf Club.
Mapletøn will be a little different from the other private country clubs in Sioux Falls in that it will not have a swimming pool, tennis courts, or a banquet facility. The focus is all about golf.
Currently, a clubhouse, a six-hole short course that will be lighted, and overnight accommodations are under construction as membership is close to full.
“We are different so we’ll have a capped membership which is really, really important because we want our members to have access to the golf course at all times so when we have a limited amount of memberships we can protect that and that’s a really cool thing that we offer,” said Gavlak.
“Demand for golf is at an all-time high. I think coming off ofthe last few years where the game grew tremendously, now’s a great time to add something to the scene, and this is different than what the city has currently. There are a couple of other family clubs in town. There’s public golf around, but there’s not a private golf club in Sioux Falls, and we’re the first of that offering,” said Vaughn.
Even for non-golfers, the impact of Mapletøn can be felt throughout the community.
“It’s a win-win for everybody. We have golf professionals, executive chefs, food and beverage director, so we’re creating a ton of employment as we sit here, so it’s been awesome for everybody,” said Gavlak.
The course itself has some unique features.
“You look at the property, the elevation changes, you see out here from a design standpoint we have rolling hills, we have holes that go up and down different sides of the property. We’re able to play along a creek, we’re able to play up top in the wind, and all of those kinds of things, so the property is very unique for South Dakota. I’m certainly looking forward to getting to see the happiness and the joy associated with a new project, and what the membership gets to feel is a rewarding end to a long process, but a great one,” said Vaughn.
