RENO, Nev. (KOLO) – Bank of America’s Golf With Us initiative is providing the youth an opportunity to enjoy the game through its Youth On Course program.

“It’s a great program that helps bring the game of golf to youth by making it accessible. Golf can be an expensive sport. It provides $5 rounds of golf at over 2,000 different courses across the nation,” said Nick Rowe, Reno Market Executive at Bank of America.

Including local courses like Wildcreek, Kiley Ranch, Sierra Sage and Washoe County. “We also have another five or six courses in Tahoe, Carson City and Washoe Valley that participate in the program,” added Rowe.

People who are 6 to 18 years old qualify for the membership. But if you want to start with a lesson from a pro you can check out First Tee, which prioritizes youth development.

“We use the game of golf to teach life skills, such as honesty, integrity, and perseverance and we also teach key commitments like collaborating with others and appreciating diversity,” said Chris Mazzaferri, LPGA Golf Professional and coach at First Tee Northern Nevada.

Mazzaferi says the game has grown since the pandemic, but finding a place for kids to play on a course has been a challenge. “Youth On Course gives kids the opportunity to actually get on the golf course at a reasonable price. Most golf courses in town, Reno or Northern Nevada are Youth On Course facilities,” added the pro golfer.

First Tee Northern Nevada says they are expanding its operations to Wildcreek. “Phase one is the Par 3 golf course which has been totally renovated. It has new cart paths, new bunkers, new tee boxes and then there will be a brand new 9-hold championship course,” said Mazzaferri.

June 15 is the deadline to get your membership under the Youth On Course initiative.

“Sports really builds character. It helps teach cooperation and resilience. Just all the things that help. So getting youth started early just helps them understand life school that is important on and off the course,” said Rowe.
