I’m traveling the UK to find the best budget golf course I want to know which golf club is going to give you the best value for money to do this we’re going to be looking at three elements to rate each course there’s one rule each Green fee has to be under £75 to be in with a chance of being crowned the best budget Golf Course so our next episode brings us down here to bamb Castle Golf Club and straight off look at the view on the first te I’ve just had a walk around the golf course and it is absolutely stunning out there you are in for a real treat today course was founded in 1904 par 68 5,600 yards but don’t let that yardage fool you because it has been described as Moun golf here given the elevation changes that you face when you’re playing around the bay here the winter Green fee is only £35 and the summer Green fee is £70 so coming in just under that 75 bracket but let’s see what the course has to offer can a break par here we didn’t do it at seah houses in the first one I’m feeling a little bit more confident today though I’m absolutely buzzing for this golf course let’s get on the first te and see how I go well the first hole we Face here is a par three there are six par 3es on this golf course this one being 143 Ys to the flag today the North Sea is just down on the right loads of room left wind is into it’s probably playing about 165 so I think I’m going to hit an a iron travel a bit it’s all over this oh it’s just wind’s got it I thought I should have hit a seven then just caught the bunker and come back in but it was a good swing to start the day oh nipped it too clean kick left gosh halfway down I thought that was really really good so having got out on the golf course now my first impressions start from when you’re driving in you get some spectacular views of the castle and then when you’re greeted by the clubhous it just feels a little bit more grander than what seah houses did and a really good sign of a good golf club was that we were able to get some food early on and enjoy a coffee before we headed out on the golf course and even before we headed out took a look at some of the facilities that the club has to offer those being a fulllength practice ground a pitching green and a putting green outside the clubhouse that has a truly spectacular view over the North Sea maybe these are early signs as to why we see this being £70 as opposed to probably a little bit more budget in the form of the seah house course from last time when you get up to the top of the third green you are treated with one heck of a view the just stretching in there that is absolutely stunning the Castle’s in the background oh wow a roller coaster of a ride it’s a part five though [Music] Jesus well that’s on the fifth my golf game has left me well a little bit off the Beaten Track but I don’t care when there’s views like that 254 to the middle of the green straight into the window if I can get this was in sort of 340 yards we’ve done well so now that I’ve played a few holes I’m getting a good idea for what the course condition is like if we were to compare this from the 40 Green fee we saw at seah houses to the 70b of Green fee we’ see here at Bamber in summer I think they’re pretty similar in the co condition but it’s just the finer touches which Elevate Bamba things like the flags the pristine they’ve got a lovely embroidered logo on them similar with the t- markers and also things like the rakes they’re just better Nick and just add those little finer touches to it when we actually look at what the fairways the te’s and greens are like again they’re just manicured a little bit more the greens are rolling a little bit faster and a little bit trer the fairways are just manicured a little bit more sharply and I think that’s where I would see or maybe justify where the Gap in the price point is so our sixth hole is a stroke one here it’s 223 yds up the hill you’ve just seen I’ve got driver out but it’s a par three you’ve got to get it up on top to a small green but oh no pulled it what stop that for me stay stay a well that’s a par I would say even though it’s a three keep going keep going keep going keep going keep going ah right birdie strange stretch of like two threes on the par ORS and a four on the three think I was more happier with my four on the three cuz that was a boot but just wander over here with me take a look at this for a PA three what a stunner what a stunner to the eth hole here power three 113 it’s one of the first sites you get of the castle probably one of the best you actually get a vber castle over just over Yonder I’ve just put my bid in for it waiting for it at the minute hopefully comes through sure they like St six quid oh that is so bad you never had so many pictures in P three well a nice little run of golf there that was that was a tough little stretch that beautiful though nice PA down into the valley now to finish out this nine why is this just that’s a long shot in now that’s got the legs that’s really good turn in take that oh love lovely par regimental that regimental what is it regulation regulation par to round out the nine three over for nine holes not too bad considering we started double bogey so far that that stretch like I said earlier four five six round there truly incredible when you get in just all that VI every hole has been incredible really some nice variation as well in the the lengths and the undulations and what you’re playing but I think on the back nine there’s some even better holes so let’s get stuck into those that is little bit left of the stick should be fairly good though don’t think I could have hit that anymore out of the heel I all that little tuck to away one 90 yards to go had so much more room to the right there I thought there was no room probably could have hit driver more over there and pitched [Music] across [Music] the par we’re tricking these pars off baby the 12 is 390 yards down a hill a blind t-shot you get quite a few blind ones on the back n but what you don’t see of the Fairway you get a better view out towards holy Island out that way that little strip of land there in the distance that looks like you could put an incredible golf course in there if there’s not one already in that little bit if not I’ll buy it anyway let’s go oh that’s so far right actually seeing it bounce which is the odd thing don’t hit it with too much wind oh it’s going to be right at the green that [Music] SL that’s [Music] annoying A Silly Billy difficult little putt that down the hill use make up for it though our third 1th hole though 380 yd par for Upper Hill let’s see what we can do try and get one back so now we’re getting to the latter stages of the round I’ve had a really good feel for what the course layout and the views have to offer at bambar Castle when we look at seah houses that we saw in episode one there was some fantastic views and these are matched at Bamba their views along the North Sea are truly fantastic and breathtaking it just has that little bit extra when you see the castle in the distance when we think of the course layout I would say the layout’s probably a little bit stronger it feels like a bit of a grander golf course the original 12 holes at seah houses had a lot to offer maybe just lacked a little bit of space as where here at Bamba it feels like each hole has its own individual identity they’re not running alongside each other as much and they’re not sharing Fairways and they have some real strong tests maybe too strong of a test I would say on the six being a three up the hill but now we have a few more holes to go I’ve got a good idea it may throw something up that could take it a little bit above seah houses but that is yet to be seen when we rate these courses at the end on the star system come on C I think down on this corner this is my favorite stretch of the golf course this whatever hole that was five three four this little Peninsula bit here this is the best bit for me it’s a nice four good ho that one great view when you walk over the top Homewood stretch now great par four par three and Par Four to finish 279 is the uh 16th it goes into a little corner you can see it’s all guarded by G up on the top dog leg right to left you sort of play straight and then cut across it’s only 279 so if I get a good forward here with the wind we might actually get pretty close to knocking it on here it’s that it’s got the legs that is perfect there’s a couple of P marks at the front of the green we’ve not got to my ball yet the flag’s very one-sided here I’m thinking it’s off the back left corner but that pitch mark looks brand new nope ah where are we got to be the back left on it oh there it is damn it ah you kidding me don’t go off the [Music] Green from nearly thinking out a hole in one to nearly getting an eagle thank you for my PA told you it was a Oh golf it will drive you mad a fall right let’s finish strong boys come on so the 17th’s actually a half four 235 yards going straight down back towards the ocean lighthouse in the distance it’s only two three five and a four downhill so I would have preferred to have this as a three and the six was it as a four cuz now I can set a cuty four iron onto this one one cut right in the heart of the green maybe on his mower oh on the path just on the path I nuted that absolutely nuted it just came out fantastically out of that way get there would have been a nice little three that but we settle for a four we’ll settle for a four the final hole here is a par four heading straight back towards the club house staring at the ocean you final look to get at the the castle in the distance it’s only 300 yards try and finish in style here bit right not we’ll take that was a nicely executed shot well done Matthew well done so not the score we probably wanted but that isn’t as important as how we’re going to rate this golf course we’ll tap in and I’ll give you my final rating of the golf course another one that slides by slides on by oo four over so the most important bit my score was four over part in the end but the rating of the course now course layout and surroundings I’m going to give that a four because it speaks for itself here I think just loses one star just on the a few holes that were a little bit similar similar if they had a few holes that they could mix it up on would have got that five stars because I think otherwise it’s truly fantastic facilities I’m going to give that a four we did arrive early here this morning we were able to get a sandwich in the clubhouse it’s got a practice green that overlooks this nice view here it’s got a big um practice ground that you can go and hit balls on it’s got a chipping green everything inside the clubhouse it’s got everything you could ever want so I’m going to give that a four and then course condition obviously we are playing just coming into Springtime and the weather’s not been great I would say I’m going to give it a three and a half here loses at one and a half St just on maybe just some of the the trimmings of the uh the golf course if we had like real Top Class t- markers I would say that would just take it that next level so overall Bamba Castle Golf Club at £70 and a budget golf course it’s one that I definitely think you should be visiting because the course is great views are great hospitality is great and if you don’t enjoy yourself here I don’t know where you will guys I hope you’ve enjoyed the video stay tuned for the next Budget Golf Course that we are going to and we’ll see you very soon

I love it when YouTubers go to these less vaunted seaside courses. They're so often much more interesting than the well known ones. It's why the Golf Mates Hidden Gems series are so much more watchable than, say, Finch's current one of yawn monsters in the US.
Matt is living in a different world! The Sunak world!! 70 pounds summer fees are just not budget. He did a poll and the results were less than 50 pounds for a budget course.
One of the most exclusive courses in Ireland Adere Manor is 45 euros with a caddie as it's mandatory at 95 euros is only 30 euros more expensive than this place. This isn't budget!!
Perranporth is worth a shout.Stunning views blind holes.James Braid design.Get yourself down you won’t regret it.£70 midweek.What a course 👍
Just wish you pronounced the name correctly 😢
£75 is most definitely not a budget golf course !!! Try playing for £30 or under.
Great series Matt, everyone is bound to have differing definitions of ‘budget’.
£70 would be out of my price range I must say. I think sub £40 is budget for me. I might just be tight though. I’ll definitely have a round there with being from the area though.
Liking this Matt! Did you know Holy Island did have a golf course designed by James Braid but it’s now gone. Check out The Lost Links by the guys at Links Diary. There are so many good tracks up and down the coastline in Northumberland and Durham which are not given the credit they deserve! Goswick and Seaton Carew are the marquee tracks to play👍
Matt you need to visit Warkworth it is excellent for the price 👌🏻 👌🏻👌🏻
Very lucky to live in the north east next to so many top links courses, goswick, dunstanburgh, bamburgh, seahouses, Alnmouth village, warkworth and newbiggin all worth a visit 👍👍
A budget golf course to me is somewhere you can afford to pay the green fee every week. £75 quid a week £300 a month is not budget. It’s budget in comparison to the more esteemed links courses I grant you!
Matt you have to get to top meadow Essex last year £19 pounds with breakfast at their exceptional restaurant prices this year risen to £21.00 after 2pm £14 this course will not disappoint you and the breakfast well I'll let you comment on that yourself beat that if you can remember you are saying best budget course not the best course.
6th is a Par 3 – Stroke index one, you got a bogey but claimed a par, on camera? must be a new rule
Played here 3 years ago and paid £25 with a coffee and a bacon sarnie thrown in.
Cracking track and deceptively tricky
you need to give newbiggin by the sea a go , it's a propa hidden gem , in top 200 courses in UK and csn get on for 25 pound
Matt suggest you watch Iona Stevens on how to play “In The Red”..she is a class act and wonderful golfer. Her calmness is something you could learn from her.
Views are fantastic 👏🏻👏🏻
Dunstaburgh just down the road is 1/2 the cost of there and it's not a par 3 course.
Played this a few times while on holiday in this wonderful part of the UK. It is indeed a nice track with some great views, and well worth checking out.
But I do wonder about the future of courses like this in this price bracket. 70 notes is not really budget, but it's also not really a must-play course. So might these courses fall in the middle and lose out a bit.
I think I paid around 40 quid when I always played it, and 70 quid does seem at the top end of what you could charge.
Love this series so far and I'm excited to see where else you play. If you travel to the Yorkshire coast there are loads of courses that would be perfect for the series. 2 in Scarborough, 2 in Bridlington and then at Filey and Flamborough in between. Then further down you've got Hornsea. And a bonus one in between is Far Grange at Skipsea. On Golf Now you can get hot deals for less than £15 for a full 18 holes and it's as good as all the other courses on the coast
I retired from the army and decided to get an annual membership at the base course. Granted I had to pay for entire year up front, however it comes out to around $15 a round with cart. Yes, it can be monotonous playing the same course, but it's hard to beat the price.
This series should be under £40. Yeah it’s gonna be harder for you to find the but much more satisfying.
If you want an inland course, try Hinksey Heights overlooking Oxford, it’s only £37 on a weekend morning, £28 week day morning. Great views of Oxford.
I couldn’t even get 5 minutes into this video. The castle and area is Bamburgh but it’s pronounced Bamborough. It’s not Seahouse, it Seahouses. If you’re going to do videos on course, please do a bit of research and at least learn how to say it properly.
I'm a Bamburgh member and had a chat with Matt before he went out. We play twice a week and every time is a treat. Rated as the easiest course in Northumberland I can assure you it will provide a challenge and a warm welcome. Matt played off forward winter tees and some of the holes are much better from the white tees. Come along, you'll love it.
Bamber lol 😮
Got to try Newbiggin golf club real hidden gem unbelievable!!
My wife and I played it today, based largely on this video. It is an absolutely stunning course. Difficult like crazy, considering how “short” it looks on paper. The clubhouse staff and food service were great.
