I have an outdoor golf area in my backyard. I have a putting green and a hitting cage. When I had it all installed, I wasn't sure if I wanted a permanent hitting area with the cage. Now, I know that I do want that. Currently, I have a turf mat that I bring out when I want to hit, and I just lay it on the turf. It's not level, it sinks in where my feet are so the ball is always above my feet, and it moves around a lot on top of the turf. I know it's affecting my Garmin R10 readouts since I'm not making solid contact due to it. So, I've decided to build a permanent hitting area there by the cage.

My question is, has anyone done a permanent outdoor hitting area before? And how should I consider building it? My thought was to cut out the section of turf that I want to build it on, put down some concrete (maybe something else?), and then get a high-quality commercial-grade mat to put on top of that. Does that sound like a good strategy?

If any has any pictures of something similar, I'd love to see it! Up for any ideas anyone has on this. Thanks!

I just did this to a degree, I put a pressure treated frame made of 2x10s down, then a weed barrier, then leveling sand, severe weather plywood sheathing, 2” insulation foam board, 1/2” stall mat, and then green outdoor carpet to look like a mat. I cut out a section down to the plywood and put a sigpro softy hitting strip in and I’m really happy with it. However I am keeping it covered with a tarp because I’m not exactly sure how weather proof it is.
