In this powerful episode of Between 2 Bags, I sit down with Joey, a 58-year-old country club caddie at El Caballero Country Club, whose life story is one of resilience, redemption, and the unexpected healing power of golf.
After 20 years as a stay-at-home dad, Joey found himself divorced, unemployed, depressed, and couch-bound for 7 years, eventually attempting to end his life.
But a Facebook ad offering a caddie job at a local country club sparked a new beginning. With no experience, Joey was one of 50 people on a Zoom interview call and was asked to interview in person at El Caballero Country Club. He was hired as a country club caddie, and the LPGA’s JM Eagle Championship was being hosted at his home club in 2025. He found himself looping for Asterisk Talley, a rising star in women’s golf, during his first-ever @LPGA event, on his home course. We met during that golf tournament, bonded over his Ben Hogan tattoo, and on this episode of Between 2 Bags, we talked deeply about life, loss, second chances, and mental health. Joey’s story mirrors Hogan’s legendary comeback after a near-fatal crash, proving that no matter how far down you fall, there’s always a chance to rise again.
With May designated as Mental Health Awareness Month, this episode serves as a poignant reminder of the vital importance of connection, movement, and purpose. Whether you’re into golf, comeback stories, or real conversations about mental health, Joey’s journey will inspire you to keep going.
This episode includes an honest conversation about mental health, depression, and suicidal thoughts. Joey opens up about his lowest point and how finding a role in the golf world gave him new purpose. [Music] My life is a comeback story. I’m a 58-year-old caddy. I was a stay-at-home father and then my marriage ended. It was really nice to meet you, Beth.
