The Dunes Golf and Beach Club Is The Best Golf Course in Myrtle Beach

foreign if you look up the best courses to play in Myrtle Beach or even South Carolina as a whole the Dunes Golf and Beach Club is always listed at the top designed by Robert Trent Jones this is probably the most memorable layout I have come across in the South like the fourth hole that pretty much forces you to carry the bunkers onto little to no Fairway with an approach shot that is guarded by water or even Alligator Alley hole stretching from 11 to the 13th is wildly difficult coin to the Waterloo the 13th is shaped like a boomerang and I have never seen anything like it the course is in impeccable shade even in the middle of winter so if you’re lucky enough to find a tea time you do not want to miss out on playing this since this course is semi-private the only way you can book this course is through play myrtlebeach.com it was very easy for me to book in the middle of winter but I can imagine it’ll be more difficult in summer months the opening drive is not ideal as I leaked it into the woods on the right I had to punch it back out onto the Fairway I hit that one a little too hard as it ran through the Fairway but the rough year isn’t that bad especially when it is dormant that was a sand wedge great contact a little different sound that I’m accustomed to and I stuck it to about seven feet trying to salvage par here on the first and I pulled it just slightly left with tap in for bogey the second hole is a dog leg left I am hitting Three Wood here trying to find the left side of the Fairway but as you can tell from that shot shape similar to the one on the first hole blocked it out to the right I hit that tree but I was very fortunate it bounced back into the middle of Fairway the only problem is that I’m 196 yards away that is a four iron caught it a little thin would be just short of that bunker and you can’t tell from this camera angle but I had a very weird lie the ball kind of nestled near the lip of the bunker that was probably the best attempt I could have had at that so I have this long look for par and that ball broke hard right at the hole so I would have a tap in for bogey speaking of the ball I am using a TaylorMade Tour response if you’ve watched any of my previous course Vlogs I’ve used a TaylorMade tp5 but I tried something a little different would find the center of the Fairway here only 167 yards at is a five iron caught that one really well just tugged it a hair left well maybe it was more than a hair left as I got this 40 foot putt for birdie these are the type of putts I always three putt came up well short once again especially in the early holes when I really haven’t found the pace of the greens yet tug that one left and we three putt for bogey so we start the round with three straight bogeys we move to the fourth hole this is such a wonderfully difficult whole design whether you play from the whites or Blues this whole forces you to carry over those bunkers onto a sliver of a fairway and unless you’re a scratch golfer or you love losing golf balls you can’t really go for this hole in two as it is guarded by I guess you can say a phallic-shaped water hazard with that in mind I am aiming for the left side of the Fairway tugged it just a little left but I would say that is the Miss as long as you get past the pokers I think you’re fine here laying up with a pitching wedge I have about 120 yards to that water hazard hit a little tube pure got a little too close for comfort this is about the same urge as I had on the first hole just like a three-quarter Sand Wedge hit it so well just pulled it slightly but I have about 15 feet for birdie uphill moving to the right oh not right enough apparently but would tap in for par move to the fifth hole 172 yards into a breeze that’s a six iron Struck it pretty well kinda high off the face came up attached short would leave me with about 30 35 feet for birdie and this is where cocky Ken comes into play with a little one-handed pod for par and I I put myself down for a par but looking back at it that putt was just way too long to be given so I’m gonna put myself down for a bogey we moved to the sixth hole I’ve got a fade going on so I’m aiming up the left side of the Fairway but that faded a little too much would find the right side rough which again is not that bad especially in the winter time grass a little dormant caught it pretty well but just pulled it again that’s that’s my misses just pulling the ball left have a difficult chip here short-sided hit it I thought was well but it hit that down slope and just look at how much that ball just rolls away from the PIN this is not the type of putt you want to be putting for par you could tell right away I was just not happy about that I left it a good six feet short trying to salvage a bogey here we found the bottom of the cup saving myself from getting a double bogey seventh hole straight away Par Four but there are bunkers covering the left and right side of the Fairway so found the center cut leaving myself with just 138 yards in that is an eight iron and you know I’m striking the ball well in my arms right now hit it just left of the flag so I got another decent look for birdie looks like I’m aiming left of the pin and it broke the other way you could tell I am a master reader of the greens but that’ll be a nice tap in for par eighth hole par five slinging another fade down the right side of the Fairway Robert Trent Jones loves to guard his greens with copious amount of green side bunkers so I’m laying up here with a seven iron Chuck it very well again just leaked it a tad left but again I’m in this nice patch of rough that ball kind of jumped on me a little bit with the swing feeling as good as it is and I shook that one really well it’s kind of disappointing that I have this rather long putt for birdie and like most putts today I leave it short got about a four foot at this time I got two hands on the putter and we put it in the cup for par this Par 3 is probably my favorite par three on the course it’s the only chance you really get to see the ocean as a pitching wedge hit it dead center of the club face this would be my best look for birdie of the day got about seven feet for pretty but this just puts on the right turn signal way too quick I read it right I just didn’t give it enough and would tap in for par and that is four Pars in the last six holes after three bogeys to start the round staying composed not putting up any double boxes a little disappointed I haven’t seen any Alligators but it was January looking deeper into the numbers 20 putts is a lot outside of 30 feet and number three putting machine but ball striking with my irons is where it’s at so let’s see if I can continue the trend as I head to the back nine the 10th hole is a short par for with water hazard that comes into play so I’m hitting a through it here instead of a driver and this is probably one of the more embarrassing swings in my life not because of the Swing itself but oh my belt broke yeah yeah the uh the old belt broke yeah I guess I guess it’s time for me to go on a diet it’s never good when the belt breaks on on camera got 125 yards nine iron hitting into an elevated slow pulled the ball left and it leaves me with this massive 30 foot putt coming back down the hill I thought this was going in forever a decent attempt for birdie there he is only with about 15 feet for par gave it a good Pace at least gotta pass the whole but have to settle for a bogey the 11th through 13th is known as Alligator Alley this is definitely the hardest three-hole stretch on the course with water hazards everywhere it is not going to be easy staying on dry land I’m aiming at the left side of the Fairway I got this nice little cut going on would hit the Fairway but would roll out on the right side rough if there is one thing that I struggle with in the game of golf it is alignment you can see my feet are way right of where the pin is it came across it though beautifully ended up drawing that just left of the hole but a lot of times I end up chunking that ball fortunate enough to have about a 25 foot putt for birdie this is one of my better well-read putts I would go on to make the putt for par so we’re even through one at Alligator Alley we’ll move to the part 3 12 as a five iron skanky five iron at that that is headed right for the right side bunker it did not go over the bunker it went straight in thankfully though it is perched on an upslope which makes this bunker shot a lot more easier at this point during my run I felt like I was really limiting a lot a lot of mistakes trying to get up and down for Sandy oh and we drain it for par what and up and down let’s head to the 13th and the signature hole in the course known as the Waterloo no not named after Abba’s classic hit but for its insane design it is an inverted dog leg that cuts across like Singleton there’s no way around this you have to hit over water on your layup or for some the approach shot or unless you’re Bryson D Shambo I’m sure he would love to reach the Green from The Tee Box me however I got my three wood in hand it is my anti-cut club or so I thought I hope what do you think I can’t see it it was struck so bad that it was good but the ball was lying on a downslope or it was below my feet and I knew I was going to have a hard time getting this one in the air get over please get all I flirted with disaster on back to back swings but somehow came out unscathed as an eight iron in hand and that was up to this point in the worst swing of the round a lot of it has to do with my alignment but unfortunately it is hard to self-diagnose mid-round so I’m pitching onto the green that checked up pretty nicely so I had this delicate right to left putt started it a little too outside but would settle for a bogey but I’m pretty happy going one over in that three-hole stretch this course actually has 19 holes on the property it is a par 72 but the par 4 14 is actually being renovated so the current 14th is a par 3. that was a seven iron and I struck it very well but as you can see it went just a little long the greens on the 14th aren’t that great obviously with it being an alternate hole I gave it a little more pace and I should have leaves me with about four to five feet for par oh and we left the right Edge that that’s a tough bogey you can see him not too happy with that result 15th hole is a par five I got the rights going on just a little bit but just left enough to avoid the trees I’d hit over that Fairway bunker laying up here with an eight hour and trying to give myself about 70 yards in shucker pretty well kind of knuckled a little out of that rough leaves me with a delicate pitch shot hitting into a slightly elevated green caught it a little thin but I got a very friendly bounce I’m putting just On The Fringe for birdie very quick putt but I left it short with tap in for par if you look to the left the 16th is a shorter Par Four at 345 yards what makes it difficult is that there are count them seven bunkers that cover the entirety of the green I would have loved to have shown you my tea shop but unfortunately all right so I missed that tea shop I found the Fairway I have 110 yards out got a gap watch I mean look at this piss-poor alignment looks like I’m aiming at the far right bunker I came across it and of course I chunked it I mean look at the divot too just pathetic one thing that I do have confidence in is my short game in the bunker splashing out very nicely unfortunately there’s a ridge I just couldn’t get it up that trying to salvage par with another up and down from the bunker but these screens are tricky especially as you get closer to the hole the ball just seems to dive away from the hole the 17th is a par 3 guarded by bunkers in a triangle formation leave that ball just out over the right hoping it covers the bunker it would when putting most of the break occurs as you near the hole when the ball is losing pace so even though this putt looks like it’s breaking left it straightened out as it neared the whole this is one of those uncomfortable short putts where just enough doubt creeps into your mind that you’re not going to make it thankfully I centered that into the hole for par come to the final hole of this great Golf Course wonderful wonderful cloud coverage that is a pull cut finding the left side of the Fairway if you watch any of my videos you know I draw the ball normally but I just didn’t have it in the bag on this vacation trip that’s a seven iron from 153 yards going directly at the pin I thought this would be like a tap in birdie instead it rolled just past the pin so I got this 15 foot putt for birdie I miss on the low side but looking back on this round I have to say my putting wasn’t that bad had a few three putts but overall I definitely feel like I shaved a few Strokes off with my putting the back nut is really solid with only four bogeys for a final score of 80. what really impressed me throughout the entire round was that I did not compound any mistakes no double bogus just hidden greens two putting and GTFO as for this course well I think the aerial speak for itself this is a great course Robert Trent Jones really outdated himself on this one the whole designs are really unique Golf Digest has his currently ranked as the 64th best public course in the US I feel like it should be a little lower on the list it is a shame that there aren’t any closed captioning not available [Music]

My second trip on this Myrtle Beach vacation is at Robert Trent Jones’ fabulous Dunes Golf and Beach Club.

It was the host of the 2014 PGA Professional National Championship, as well as 2017 Southern Amateur Championship and U.S. Women’s Amateur Four-Ball Championship.

Since this is a semi-private course, there’s only a few ways to book at this course. Go to myrtlebeachgolf.com to book your tee time, if you’re lucky.

  1. Fellow alignment struggler here. Cloud coverage on 18 is surreal, but it makes me happy to see golf in sunny weather. I've gone out 3 times in the last week to try to video a round and have been rained on, snowed on, and blown off the course. That's on top of upper 30's low 40's temps. Swing on!

  2. Tour response with Stripe is a fantastic ball Ken. Also I do love your channel. Love to get a round in if you r ever in Central Florida. Keep the vids coming!

  3. great video. always great to see follow bogey golfers lol. have you looked into getting some 7 and 9 woods in your bag? ive switched over to replace my 4 and 5 iron and i love it. the height i get from the woods compared to the irons cant be beat. keep up the great content though

  4. Great course, its been years since I last played it. Just found your channel, kind of a harsh YT channel name, but hopefully its in jest, your putting goal should be low 30's, that would have been a mid 70's round which is very good there.

  5. I have played there twice. It’s a very nice, but tough track! Yeah almost every green is elevated and heavily guarded. I enjoy playing the resort course at Grande Dunes much better

  6. WOW!!! this is becoming the best channel to check out all these awesome courses. Nice to be able to afford all these courses, jealous as hell, lol. Any plans to visit Portugal and play a course like Monte Rei golf course? love the channel.

  7. I wish you played Caledonia in the late afternoon– it is the best visual of heaven on earth golf course.

  8. My cottage is just across Singleton Swash, such a beautiful course! We watch the golfers come through all the time. Hope to play it one day.

  9. 👍🏽 played there last year. Great course definitely got to go back in the spring or summer when it’s not dead
