Do you have any um favorites or or par threes you like that are like really long that are really long? Yeah, there’s probably not many of them. Yeah. I mean, it just becomes hard. I I just don’t think um when you have to make a hole that long, it just doesn’t become that great. It just becomes like, okay, you got certain target here and then you got to hit a shot around there and make a par and get out of there instead of a shorter par three that entices you to get close to it. But if you’re a little bit off, you’re either in the water or in a short-sided spot or if you bail out. Yeah, you still have a tricky little putt. I I just think all the the best part threes are under 200. Um you can maybe have it just over 200, but soon as you start to take head covers off of on par threes, I just think it gets a little silly. I Yeah, I don’t I couldn’t tell you a par three over 250 yards, that’s uh that’s good. I would say architecturally I think um you know obviously you have 16 at at Cypress Point is is pretty special. Um but uh you know I definitely think there’s some potential uh viewing reasons that that makes it you know a great a great hole. So I’m I’m a big short par three guy. I think a lot of us and a lot of players and and people that watch golf are. Um yeah I just that’s my opinion. Did you te it up from the back on eight at 299? I did. Um yeah, that’s not my favorite hole in the world. I think you could do some other things with that, but it um everyone’s going to have to play the same same hole and going to have to execute the same shots. And um I would love four threes on it right now if I could take

  1. 17 @ TPC Sawgrass, 12 @ Augusta National (I would include 16 as well), 7 and 17 @ Pebble, 8 @ Royal Troon, the list goes on. These are all iconic short par 3s that are fun, intimidating, can be diabolical at times, and require you to give the hole your full attention.

Long pars are mostly one dimensional. They are just long and do exactly what long golf courses do….play into the hands of the longer players.

  2. Agreed. Local par 3 in my area has (4) that are over 200. It's open, so it's a little more beginner friendly, but you're not getting par unless your short game is dialed, or you're long irons are darts.

  3. I enjoy watching how the pros hit into greens requiring long irons. It takes advanced skill that not many amateurs have.

  4. I like Hovland's opinion, I hate JT's opinion.

'They share the same opinion', you might say….

Well I don't like the messenger.

  5. I've always said, you can keep a par 3, 120 to 180 yards and still make it challenging. these long 230 to 270 yard par 3's just get laughable. a few of the course's i play, have 200 to 225 yard par 3's. And if the wind is blowing at all, good luck!!!!

  6. Making courses 7800+ makes no sense. 200 + yard par 3's are stupid. Make courses harder by strategic bunkering, more trees, sloping greens or water hazards. Length is not the defence of any course it's getting you thinking where to put the ball in being able to attack the pin

  7. Make the professional game of golf a game of accuracy and control again. Not a slogging contest. I think the balance was just right when players were driving the ball 280-320yards and hitting 7 irons 175-185yards.

  8. Olympic golf is the future of the US Tour I reckon. The idea that the playing field is regulated, like a basketball court or tennis court. The balls will be regulated, the clubs will be regulated and the distance of holes will be regulated. Like between 50m and 200m is a par 3, 200 and 450m a par 4 and less than 600 is a par 5. I think LIV is the beginning of unregulated golf, based on teams and creating any length golf course. It's like the US Tour is here to stay, like nations, whereas LIV is like the music industry, genres change, people change, but through change evolution occurs

  9. The 2 best par 3s on tour are August 12th and TPC Sawgrass and both are 9 iron or Wedge shots. Oakmont is a tremendously hard course and I don’t think crazy length par 3’s add anything and I love short par 4s that have a lot of risk reward that Jack Nicklaus designs!

  10. The problem institutionally is that the USGA / PGA wants to defend par at major championships so it changes the rules and lengthens the courses as equipment and players athleticism improved and a 250 yard pour three is just an example of that.

As a recreational golfer, who knows how to shape shots when I play a course for the first time I look at the yardages on the different tee boxes for the par three holes, picking the longest part three and then pick the tease that I can reach the green with my fire straight shot, which means I can hit a fade with my three arm to the same distance. I find when I do that I enjoy the course more because it’s more playable for me and fair at my skill level.

  11. In my opinion once a par 3 reaches past 200 yards it's not really fun. I like the shorter ones where they are aiming at a quarter size spot and using spin and slopes. Like Victor said, once they get too long, they are just going for the green, any part of the green.

  12. I disagree with the attitudes, says a lot about these guys. At the end of the day it’s about shooting the lowest score among the best players in the world playing on the same course at relatively the same time. It’s about playing the right shot relative to your ability, at almost all times, for 72 holes. Holes like that separate the field. There should be some pitch and putt opportunities on the course but sometimes par is good score on a hole. It’s golf, it’s not supposed to be a walk in the park and it’s not always fair. It’s not supposed to be easy and the breaks are the breaks. Entitlement is a character flaw, nobody is promised a perfect lie in the middle of a plush, perfectly mown fairway. It’s the same for everyone else playing and if it’s not? Those are the breaks. The best players in the history of the game overcome the bad breaks better than the players who complained about them.

  13. Same with par 4’s 500 yards +. It’s just architecturally lazy. If you need to stretch a par 4 out to 500 yards then you’ve failed.

  14. I have a 230 yard par 3 at my club, thankfully there's no water on it. I for sure can't reach it unless I pull driver, then it doesn't stop and it rolls off the back

  15. They mad because they're difficult to get par, but everyone plays the same hole so it really doesn't matter

  16. People want to see great golf shots. Shorter par 3s with trouble gaurding the green are so much more entertaining. The same is true for reachable par 4s. Golf is boring with 4 irons off the tee on par 3s and 500 yard par 4s. Golf should be about the golfers and not about the architect that built a golf labyrinth.

  17. I like a course that does a short par 4 or two. And a long par 3. As a fan though not as a player. Really they are par 4s that have been re-assigned. I think a course would do well to also have a variety of length par 5s as well. Bring in the chance for the ultimate “Condor” biggest of birds 😂
