the ninewood versus the five iron. Who is going to make which decision? Can we stop at the high handicap golfer? Can we stop at the individual who just wants to hit it that bit further with a bit more consistency? Are we talking to the purist? Is it time for you to get off your five iron ego? Because even this is getting too much for you. In this video, we’re going to bring you your all. We’re going to break down what to look for when it comes to testing a 9wood and a 5iron. what you need to do during your fitting session to get the best out of these. And we’re also going to find out if this Nwood can turn my eye and I actually put one in the bag. Hey guys, welcome back to the channel. Today I’ve got a video that’s intrigued interest based on the Tommy Fleetwood, what’s in the bag and everything he had to say about the Nwood. First time I’ve seen one of these. This is the Tailor- made core 9wood at 24. It’s a Nwood. Never hit one. Need to do some stuff on it on the channel for sure. Maybe you can give us a little run into that. Like nine woods. What What do you What do you love about this? How far does it go? You got 250 255 on the fivewood and then what’s the nine giving you? Two between 230 and 240. Um it’s actually so carry-wise it’s not that much different to my forearm, but it’s a very very different golf club. Okay. In terms of peak height, in just terms of peak height, the softness that I can create with it in terms of landing on the on the greens and it it’s easy to hit than a than a long iron. Now this club has a place. Is it for you the golfer or are we going down an avenue that maybe you’re not comfortable with? I went into the kingdom just over there and grabbed the Ninewood. First thing I noticed is this is the strongest setup I could get from there which was a regular on a 24 and a half degree head. So we’ve got a lightweight golf shaft in there with a regular flex. There’s some Alexes over there which is for the senior and then that is it. So that does imply that if you are slower ball speed, swing speed too, then the Ninewood could be your ticket. Now me personally, I love a long iron. I’ve actually just switched into the P7 CB from the P770 just to get my spin number where it needs to be, but I get it. Looking down at this bad boy can be a little bit intimidating. Stepping up to hit the golf shot if you’re not quite on your game. Well, we might not get out of this can what we absolutely need. But on the same note, there’s nothing like striking a long iron. There’s nothing like that sound as it comes in to launch and spin to come out at half of the loft on the blade. So, we know that that 9wood is 24 25°. Your five iron based on how you set it up is going to be pretty similar. And that one only launched at 9.4 according to the full swing. And the spin was just up there around about 6,000. So, it was launched a little low and it spun a little bit high. Now, the number that comes out as we look at this is going to be apex. And we can see that the apex was 81 ft. So, if I take my club speed, which is around 90, that one came out a little bit low, which would mean I squeezed it a bit. I’ve talked to you before when you test golf clubs, we’re into the wind slightly. So, as a player, I’m trying to trap this thing in order to get the golf ball first and then the turf. All of these things I’m saying are key messaging to you as a golfer. If you’re someone who has the ability to create the angle and compress and get the ball squeezed out on the turf and a five iron doesn’t intimidate you because you’ve got a little bit of speed and you can hit down on it, you’re in the right place. Do not look at that ninewood. But like I mentioned, Tommy Fleetwood is using this thing. So there’s definitely some intrigue as to what it might do. Let me hit one more five iron just because I love long irons and then we’ll get into it. That’s how you hit a long iron. As we reach for the ninewood, I’m not sure you can get that crisp sound, that crisp feel that I just got from that. I am not in love with this based on where I grew up and where I played golf. But there’s other demographics of players other than me. And Tommy Fleetwood using this is interesting. Now, what you must take into consideration. Tommy plays golf on tour quality golf courses. He said in the what’s in the bag, how good’s a ninewood? It flies high. It lands soft. If you’re going for US Open type greens, which is coming up here, that thing is going to be firm. Now, that five iron without doubt came out pure, but I’m playing off a lie that is fairway. It’s fairly tight, not ridiculous. I can tell you now that with the sole of the ninewood and just putting it down into this, the fact that you’ve got all of this sole and this center of gravity that’s further back and deeper, you’re able to chop it no problem out of a lie that a five iron may well not be able to get out of. There’s your first thing. So, it’s a little bit more versatile. Now, keep in mind it isn’t quite the shaft setup for me, but you’re going to notice an apex here that is significantly higher than what we’ve been hitting there with the five iron. Apex is obviously the height the golf ball travels. Lengthwise, it doesn’t feel too long. And obviously with the larger head, it now makes the shaft feel short, but because of the head and the length of the shaft, it doesn’t feel particularly long. So, you can get into it, you can treat it like an iron. So you can still hit down on it slightly. And let’s check out this launch. We had that five iron launch in under 10. But watch now all the way down. I mean that stopped on a dime. Launch apex 96 versus in the 80s. Launch 11.4. club speed went up of course naturally total was 214. So it’s your 200 yard club. To get a five iron to go 214 needs to be a pretty healthy five iron. So you might get a little bit more yardage out of this golf club. Let’s just put a smoothie five iron down. Not hit great, but it’d be interesting to came out with a little less spin. So 190. So you’re going to get more yardage club for club out the ninewood for sure. You’ve got more versatility if you get in the long grass. But can you keep the apex down on this thing? That would be something we should show. That’s pretty good. But I’m doing my utmost to cover that. I don’t know if I can do it consistently. I mean, this isn’t even in my spec. And this is now turning into a genuine do you like this session, which is interesting because I don’t want to like it at all. I mean, the draw I’m not worried about. That comes from the flex in the golf shaft. But all those have landed pretty similar. 202. So they’re going a little bit further than the five iron. They’re coming out a little left of where I’m aiming, but they are easier to hit. And I think that’s an important message. 203. Okay. So that was a good five iron. I needed to get there. That was 203 versus 202. It was launched at 10, but it’s apexing at 70 degrees. So, it’s a completely different flight. And I think to answer your question as to why Tommy Fleetwood plays this thing, he plays it on difficult golf courses, he plays it out of poor lies, for sure. He takes the benefit of having the larger sole. I mean, you’re not getting a five iron out of that, but you’re sure as hell advancing a ninewood out of that. No doubt. Can we dig this out? That’s what I’d expect. I mean, your five iron isn’t coming out of that at all. So, there’s your advantage with the thing. It’s just if you can accept the look of a much larger blade. Now, if you’re a beginner player and you need height, because hitting a five iron, there’s no chance, then guess what? This is the club for you. If you are someone who struggles with height, this is the club for you. If you’re someone who wants versatility, this is the club for you. If you’re someone who needs more yardage, this face is way easier to hit than that. This is the club for you. If you are a traditionalist, you’re going to struggle with that. If you’re someone who wants to control the apex, you play in the wind, this is going to be for you. If you’re someone who plays off very tight links type fairways, this is going to be you. This narrow sole has advantages to cut through the turf, but if you don’t know how to compress the golf ball and launch a five iron under 12 degrees, there’s no point in using this because you’re not getting any advantage out of it. But if you’re someone who needs to attack pins, needs height, don’t play in the wind, can control the flight and keep it down if needed, but want something a bit more versatile and can leave the ego at the door, which I always like, Ninewood could well be in your armor. For me personally, I would carry it if I was playing a long inland golf course. I understand why Tommy’s using it because he’s playing major type golf courses. He doesn’t use it every week. However, the purist in me, the golf fan in me is a big fan of a long iron, but a five iron is not a given on a strike for anyone. Obviously, this P770, this P790, that’s a bit easier to hit. But if you’re a purist and you like looking down at a good looking five iron, then that obviously puts you in a tough spot. But it’s if you can have the confidence to hit your ball at a very high peak height, that was coming out 96 ft. That is not to be messed around with. That is high. If you can handle that, then you’re in the right place. If you can’t hit it in the air, you’re looking down the right barrel. But if strike and purity is what you need and you want to control that yardage, remember gear effect comes in with the ninewood where we have toe and heel. And because the CG is further back, if you toe bang one of these things, you’re going to see it move right to left big time. We’ll try and demonstrate that. If I hit one out of the toe massively or out the heel. Bad example. It should curve that one. Kind of straight straight, but you get where I’m potentially going with this. And it’s probably gone 199. Do you know what? If you suck at golf, but you want some confidence, get a 9wood. If you’re like me and you’re a purist, you want to control the ball flight, get a five iron. I got nothing. [Music] Heat. Heat.

What words of advice at the end! Brilliant Trottie. I feel ya!
Another brilliant cliic from the master. It is interesting Tommy is using that club but after hearing you talk I can see why. He is a guy who hits the ball on a lower flight and that 9 wood gives him a lot more options since he can get the flight lower and take it high if he needs to. . I love the 5 iron, when I have a 5 iron in my hands I feel very confident. That being said, I ditched the 3 and 4 irons lol.
haha. great video. glad i stayed for the end.
I bit the bullet, swallowed my pride and pulled my 5 iron for a hybrid. It’s done wonders for my long game
San Diego local and North County native here!
I used to drive to the top of the hill in Carlsbad to catch a glimpse of The Kingdom. Back in the day, when the bushes were a bit thinner and less overgrown, I would sneak to the back and peek through the greenery with my rangefinder. One time, I even spotted Dustin Johnson dialing in his swing. It was such an incredible moment!
I've always been proud to call Southern California my home. I once tried to get a job there, but I didn't have the necessary experience or education at the time. Now that I’m older, I fully trust TaylorMade with my game. I've used my own feedback and watched countless videos to somewhat “custom fit” a set of clubs that I believe works for me. As someone who has broken 80 a handful of times, I genuinely stand by TaylorMade.
What do we need to do to make a fan fitting video happen? 😂
Never hit the 9 wood, but I used to have the stealth 2 7 wood and absolutely loved that club. I can only imagine how nice that 9 wood is.
Now that was an executive summary! Excellent content. Thank you!
I added the 7 Wood recently and my buddies kind of gave me shit for it and then when they saw I got two birdies on 200 yard long part three it made them double think. I have a high swing speed of around 100 102 mile an hour on my seven wood so I had to put a KBS 90 shaft and that thing is money 200 to 225 and stops on a dime.
I love my 9 wood. It fits nicely between my 7 wood and my 5 iron.
My 9 wood replaced my 4 iron not the 5 iron
Love the closing comments, that was so good. I reckon that 9 wood would be perfect for ya Trottie 😉
Why not a 5H?
Need to make some for us lefties.
I currently have a TM 7 wood and had to go with a ping 9 wood. I would love to get all my clubs from one brand.
Is it just me or is 9 wood only available in the max head
I love it. So hilarious
I'm glad so many pros have checked their egos at the door and given in to these high lofted fairway woods and hybrids. Now all of us egomaniac (and highly delusional) mid (and low) handicappers don't have an excuse not to try and play them too!
Hey Trottie, i just watched your 7 wood video before this video. Can us regular guys get our bonded woods' lie angles adjusted at a club repair shop? Or is that just a tour truck thing?
I’m a 25 handicap and dropped driver, 4 and 5 iron and went with 3, 5, 7 and 9 woods and dropped a lot of strokes because I rarely fat them and I hit them pretty straight. Not uncommon to hit a wood on or around the green and I hit my 3 wood out to 250m which is plenty anyway, but not in the trees…
We really need channels that do these test with hc players.
Feel like we are neglecting a key cost consideration here – 9 wood set you back $350, 5 iron what, $150, probably already included with your iron set. I understand this audience will generally know that but given they are recommended for “beginners” in the video I would say it’s worth calling out.
I play a 9 wood and a 5 iron. 5iron for me is 175 whereas the 9 wood is 190 with a totally different flight. Both have their uses.
Most mere mortals don’t have access to test 9w heads especially in Australia, how would someone pick a shaft. Just go similar to their 7W shaft?
Well done Chris 👏 😊
Would love to play a 7w and 9w.
Online custom fit selectors and local pros don’t have a range of 7w nor do they have a range if shafts at the top end for the quicker players.
As a quicker player, never find anything 85g and above everything is 80G and below
Hi trottie. Wouldn’t your 5i loft be more like 27°?
6:01 to skip past all the waffling and to see him actually hit it
How am I going to sneak one of these past the Mrs? 😂
I just put the TM MAX 9 wood in the bag. I had a spinal fusion 6 months ago and it is amazing for me! There is no way I would be moving around a course without the 7 wood and 9 wood.
Excellent video Trottie and timely. Thinking of replacing my 4 and 5 iron as I struggle to hit them consistently
about 3 weeks ago at my golf store that i go to, I found a Stealth 9 wood. And after testing it out on the Sim, I snatched it up! It is so easy to hit. The distance is better and more consistent.
The way you were striking that 9w, you should definitely put it in the bag if playing courses that are more "target golf" than anything in the UK.
That last shot and comment – pure gold!!!! 🙂
How long should I have my 9 wood be, I have standard length irons driver is 44.75 and I’m Ab 5’10
Stupid oems when they year after year only offer 7 and 9 woods with 40-60 gram senior flexes only. Doesn't help if the said clubs are without an adapter for you to easily swap the shaft yourself. When will they get it?
Classic 7/9 wood experience. Ego wont let you like it, but you like it, its a blast to hit.
If you suck at golf, like Tommy Fleetwood, get a 9 wood. 🤣 Awesome video. Thank you.
Perfect outro
Tommy lad! What a guy, he will get his win this weekend
Perfectly hilarious ending 🤣🤣🤣
What is the 9 wood you are testing and where can you buy it in the UK? Is it the TaylorMade Qi35, because I can only find it up to a 7 wood🤷♂️ Struggling to find many places selling 9 woods.
