Reshan Algama

Adithya Weerasinghe

Sri Lanka will once again make its mark on the international junior golf stage as two of its most promising young golfers, Reshan Algama and Adithya Weerasinghe, prepare to compete in the prestigious Asia Pacific Junior Golf Tournament, to be held from 27 to 29 May at the Hong Kong Golf Club.

For 17-year-old Reshan Algama, this tournament presents another opportunity to climb up the World Amateur Golf Rankings (WAGR), where he currently stands at 722.

For Adithya Weerasinghe, it marks a breakthrough moment, as it will provide him with an opportunity to open his account, provided he does well. Weerasinghe, a student at Ananda College, is a product of Sri Lanka Golf’s (SLG) growing junior development ecosystem. His rise from the dry zone to international greens exemplifies SLG’s success in identifying hidden talent from across the island.

Algama, already with the junior and Sri Lanka senior team, has taken part in multiple tournaments across the USA, Japan, UAE, Vietnam, Philippines, Thailand, Malaysia, and India, and has already made history, putting Sri Lanka firmly on the global golfing map with his international breakthrough win at the Vietnam Junior Open 2023.

The Asia Pacific Junior Golf Tournament is widely considered one of the most competitive junior events in the region, drawing top-tier talent from the region. Three days of golf with no cut off will be played over 54 holes.

SLG, through its grassroots development and international exposure programs, has played a central role in this transformation. Coaches, administrators, and sponsors have collectively worked to ensure that young talent is cultivated with care. Long-time supporters such as Prima, Perera and Sons, and the HSBC Future Lions Program, along with recent sponsor DFCC Bank, have invested in the dreams of Sri Lanka’s youth. (SJ)
