Scottie Scheffler has admitted he was left “mentally tired” at the Charles Schwab Challenge after his win at the PGA Championship last Sunday.
Scheffler banked major No. 3 at Quail Hollow, having fended off the likes of Jon Rahm and Bryson DeChambeau before cantering to victory down the stretch in Charlotte. There was little time for celebration, though, with the world No. 1 straight back to action at Colonial this week.
By Scheffler’s incredibly high standards, it has been a fairly steady week before finally getting his name into contention after shooting a six-under-par 64 on moving day.

Despite the impressive showing on Saturday, the Texan is battling some fatigue, which has led to him shuffling around his usual tournament week schedule. “Well, I would say mentally I definitely am a bit tired,” the world No. 1 told reporters following his third round.
“I’m definitely taking a lighter schedule this week than I normally would at a tournament, but overall my game, it feels like it’s in a good spot. I felt like I was able to get some good rest to start this week. I’m just out here battling. I had a good day today.
“The first two days definitely could have been a bit better, but we’ll see how things shake out during the course of the afternoon and see what I can do tomorrow.” For all of his tiredness, though, Scheffler has the chance to win his three straight PGA Tour events on Sunday.

He, of course, has plenty of work to do, with the PGA champion sitting six shots off the lead. If anyone can chase down such a deficit, it is most certainly Scheffler. On the back of his major triumph last weekend, the world No. 1 earned yet another comparison to the great Tiger Woods.
This time around, it was fellow major champion Ernie Els singing his praises. “I see the similarities now with Scheffler [and Woods],” Els said at the Senior PGA Championship. “Seems like he plays his best golf under the most extreme pressure, and that’s a hallmark of a champion. There’s more confidence that he’s getting by winning these tournaments.
“It’s only going to get tougher for the group following to try and get into that kind of mindset that he’s in. I think Tiger brought that intensity. You had your work cut out for you. I won four majors in his era, and there were a lot of other guys who won majors in that era.
“”We never got to the six, seven, eight. Mickelson did eventually; he got to six majors. But he had a hold on us. You knew you were in for a tough tournament when he was around, and I think that’s happening now with Scheffler.”
