As the sun finally makes an appearance over Scotland, many have seized the chance to get outdoors and soak in the country’s stunning scenery. While unsettled weather is edging closer ahead of the bank holiday weekend, it’s only a matter of time before blue skies return.
Living in Glasgow certainly has its perks, but nothing beats escaping the city for some fresh sea air. On a warm weekday, many take the opportunity to visit Troon, one of Ayrshire’s most beloved coastal towns.
Just 40 minutes from Glasgow by car or train, Troon is a weekend hotspot, often bustling with families and beachgoers chasing the sea breeze. But catch it midweek and you’ll find a more relaxed pace, where the town’s charm quietly shines, Scottish Daily Express reports.
At the heart of it all is Troon’s greatest treasure, its sweeping beach. Over a mile of clean, golden sand stretches from the lively town centre in the north down to the iconic Royal Troon Golf Club in the south, a regular host of the Open Championship.
Even when the beach is busy, there’s usually space to stretch out, especially at low tide when the shimmering waters of the Firth of Clyde retreat into the distance.
On clear days, the view across the water is breathtaking. The rugged outline of Arran dominates the horizon, while the distinctive volcanic shape of Ailsa Craig lurks in the haze.

Thanks to the warming influence of the Gulf Stream, a dip in the sea can be surprisingly pleasant, even for the littlest visitors.
One fearless 14-month-old was spotted having their first paddle in the gentle surf, unfazed by the cool water.
Back on dry land, the esplanade was full of life. Locals and visitors alike were tucking into ice creams and fish suppers, children made a beeline for the playpark, and cyclists breezed by under the afternoon sun.
But Troon isn’t just about the sand and sea. The town boasts an impressive mix of independent shops, cafés and restaurants.
Bloom on West Portland Street, which holds an impressive 4.9 rating on TripAdvisor, is a favourite for brunch or a coffee break.
Meanwhile, DRIFT Coffee and Kitchen is another ideal stop for a laid-back lunch.
Down by the harbour, the atmosphere changes again. Scotts Bar and Restaurant and the Harbour Bar are popular spots to eat and unwind, while the harbour itself remains a working hub, home to Ayrshire’s fish market and a favourite among yachting enthusiasts.

Troon is also a paradise for golfers. With five courses in the town and many more along the coast, it’s no wonder the area draws players from across the country.
Overhead, planes dip in and out of nearby Prestwick Airport, giving the skies a dash of movement above the calm below.
Best of all, getting to Troon won’t break the bank. Trains from Glasgow Central run regularly and take under 45 minutes. Drivers can reach the town in around 40 minutes, and with four free car parks available, a day at the seaside is as easy as it is affordable.
