When launched, the latest-gen Volkswagen Golf GTI Mk 8.5 will lock horns with Mini Cooper.
Volkswagen is gearing up to launch the Golf GTI to India. Earlier last month, the German carmaker launched the Tiguan R Line in India at a price of Rs 48.90 lakh (ex-showroom). Like the Tiguan R Line, the Golf GTI will also be available as a fully-imported CBU model. Ahead of its launch, let us look at what to expect from the German hot hatch.
Volkswagen Golf GTI: Design
The Golf GTI showcases a sleek upper grille with an illuminated VW emblem and a GTI variant badge, flanked by advanced Matrix LED headlights. Its bold front bumper features a prominent honeycomb-patterned air dam and striking X-shaped fog lights. Sporty red GTI badges and red brake calipers, visible behind 18-inch alloy wheels, accentuate its dynamic side profile.

At the rear, a GTI badge is positioned on the tailgate, complemented by a roof spoiler, smoked (yet unlinked) LED taillights, and twin chrome exhaust outlets. The model will be available in four colour options: Kings Red, Grenadilla Black, Oryx White, and Moonstone Grey.
Volkswagen Golf GTI: Interiors & Features
The Golf GTI boasts a dual-tone black-and-grey interior, centered around a 12.9-inch infotainment display. Key features include a wireless phone charger, USB-C ports with up to 45W fast charging capability, and a 3-zone climate control system. It also offers a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, ventilated front seats, a multifunction steering wheel with tactile push buttons, and customizable ambient lighting. The all-black upholstery is made entirely from recycled polyester and PET bottles, emphasizing sustainability.

In terms of safety, the Golf GTI is equipped with a suite of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), including adaptive cruise control, a 360-degree camera, emergency assist, emergency brake assist, lane keeping assist, and automatic high/low beam functionality.
Volkswagen Golf GTI: Powertrain
Under the hood, the Volkswagen Golf GTI is powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine that produces 261 bhp between 5,250 and 6,500 rpm, along with 370 Nm of torque available from 1,600 to 4,500 rpm. This engine is mated to a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. Volkswagen claims the Golf GTI can accelerate from 0 to 100 kmph in just 5.9 seconds.

Volkswagen Golf GTI: Expected Price
Taking indication from the Tiguan R-Line pricing, we believe the Golf GTI could be priced somewhere around Rs 45 lakh (ex-showroom). However, Volkswagen recently confirmed that the first batch of 150 units of Golf GTI have already been spoken for. That said, the company is planning to bring another 100 units of the hot hatch in the second batch soon.
