RORY McILROY is set to make more golfing history just months after he bagged the career Grand Slam.

The Masters champ has confirmed he’ll play in the first-ever DP World India Championship this October.

Rory McIlroy will become the first-ever reigning Masters champions to play in india

It will be McIlroy’s debut in India, and marks the first time a reigning Masters winner has played a pro event there.

The five-time major winner expressed his excitement after the announcement.

The world number two said: “I’m excited to not only tee it up in India for the first time but also visit a country that I’ve always wanted to explore.

“There is tremendous potential to grow golf further in the country – I can’t wait to play in front of Indian fans.”

The event has a $4million purse, which will be the most ever for a DP World Tour event in India.

The tournament will run from October 16–19 at Delhi Country Club in the country’s capital city.

McIlroy added: “I’m proud to play in the inaugural DP World India Championship. I’ve always enjoyed a global schedule – this is a great opportunity.”

DP World chief Yuvraj Narayan hailed the Northern Irishman’s addition to the field.

The DP chief stated: “Hosting a global icon like Rory is a proud milestone in our mission to grow golf from the grassroots up.”

Elsewhere, LIV Golf star Bryson DeChambeau has leapfrogged Shane Lowry in the Official World Golf Ranking.

The two-time major winner moved up five places to 10th after a decent showing at the USPGA Championship on Sunday.

2019 Open winner Lowry dropped back three places after reaching a career-high of tenth after he finished runner-up at the Truist Championship.

The Offally man had a disappointing weekend at Quail Hollow after he missed the cut.
