Element two of the five fundamentals to a swing is the stance and the posture. I’ll kick you off with this observation by me and I’ll I’ll let you go with that. I gave a lesson earlier today to a very fast golfer. He had a lot of club head speed. Never really played golf, new to it already shooting in the low 80s, but the way he set the club up at a dress with ball position and stuff basically set up a hook shot. Now this guy, he’ll probably know I’m talking about him right now cuz he listens to the show. He played with a very closed club face. All right? And so to make that play more open, he’d move the ball farther and farther back in the stance. The hand will be way in front, which threw off everything. And at the end of the whole lesson, cuz we neatened this up, we neutral neutralize the face. Shots got better, more in the air, easier, less hook shot. And I said to him, and this was the statement, I’m like, “Look, if you have good posture, it’s not going to guarantee a good shot. But if you have bad posture and bad pre-shot fundamentals, you’re almost guaranteeing the fact that you’re going to have to make mid swing compensations to have to somehow get the ball to the target. So that’s how I want to tee you off because you know when you use things like stance and posture and stuff, most golf swing junkies are like, “Oh, whatever. Let’s just get to the swing stuff.” So please start us right. I love it. Let’s start there. And you said you had a great lesson with somebody who obviously have a a lot of hand action, a lot of club head speed, so they don’t have a problem turning the club over. So, one of the things that we need to do is obviously try to figure out how to basically stay ahead of the shot, right? When we stall and stop our body, the club head is not stopping. That thing is ripping through faster than you can you can think of. So, we need to make sure that we sustain that pressure and stay out in front. So something so simple. Okay, in order to do that, we got to get our hands ahead. And in order to get our hands ahead, we have to be able to turn and pivot our body. Now, your left foot, you’ll see I have a picture there. I have it flared out to the left. And you have seen golfers flaring their left foot out. And we need to we need to sell you on the idea that if you can flare that left foot out, what that does is it allows you to clear that left side. clear the whole left side. That then allows your hands to get out in front and that then allows it to not, you know, close as quickly. You know, the club face is always closing. You’re just kind of holding off that a little bit by making sure you can get through the shot. Everybody talks about going through the shot, clearing the left side. Well, again, if you want to do that, your left foot has got to be to the left. And you can just feel how it’ll just, you know, it it pulls on your knees and your whole left side. And if you watch some golfers like uh you’ll see that they might start like that. When they finish, they’re over there because there’s no there’s no way that they you can stay that way and get through the shot. You will just tear that left side. So that’s why a lot of golfers jump out of balance is because that they want to get through, but that left foot just being in the wrong place. So flaring your left foot out 10 to 20 degrees allows your hands to get ahead to get a little bit of a shaft lean. When you have shaft lean, the club head is going downward. When the club head is going downward, we can compress the ball. When you compress the ball, magic happens in your golf shot. So you’re basically building posture from the ground up. So it begs for me because we kind of a sedentary race of people right now because everyone works at desks and in cars and phones. So, we’re all hunched over. So, we get the foot flare with the lead foot. So, it’s turned a little open, but then so many golfers I feel like are getting to the ball because they’re just collapsing their upper body and their chest and they’re not bending out of the next most important joint to me, which is the hips. So, speak about the angular nature of good posture because I see your boys do that. I’m going to just demonstrate a little bit if you don’t mind. Is that okay? Yeah. Okay. So, what I’ve got here, I’ve got here, I’m not sure if you can see this. Yeah, we got it perfectly. Yes. Perfect. So, um, we’re talking about when we get into our golf posture, we want to just get into we’re just basically tilt taking this position and tilting forward to the ground. And now you can see that I’ve got these angles. There’s a lot of things we’re bending. We got our hips uh, our shoulder right here. When I’m tilting, our shoulders now go on plane. The other thing that’s happening is my hips when I tilt forward is now on plane. So now my hips can go on plane, my shoulder can go on plane, and hopefully my swing can go on plane. And that allows me to pivot and get into a perfect position. I think a lot of golfers get right about here, and then they just quit because they can’t get deep enough, we call it. And that’s because we’re not getting what I call a hip tilt. We got to get that hip tilt to allow everything else to turn. And so it all begins with your grip. That allows us to hinge and unhinge. That’s going to be a ton of power in the swing. And then allows us to tilt forward from the hips. So this is where you bow from the hips and then that’s going to allow all the planes to get on plane and then come back down. And of course, I have a I have a couple of drills with the takeaway, but that kind of explains the hips need to be on on a plane as well. Joe almost defined the plane of the golf swing in many respects because you just rotated almost around that spine tilt, that forward bend you had set up and address. Absolutely. I’m going to just go back there again for a second because uh just think about, you know, we want, you know, we have in the golf swing, we have the arms and the body. So, it isn’t just a body turn. It isn’t just an arm swing. They both have to do their job. So, when we start when we start going back uh and turning back into the back swing, if we get into this position where we have this sit, we can’t turn anymore. True. And so, because of that, that’s where the lifting and the going inside. And so when we think about shoulder turn, just do it level up here, parallel to the ground. And you’re just turning level. Okay? Because right now I’m 90 degrees to my spine. That’s what I’m trying to do in the swing. And it’s going to look different when I set up. So now when I get set up and I bent over from the hips, I’m just going to think about turning my h my shoulders level like I did here. And then of course the incline is down here. So now I just turn my shoulders and I’m going to get in a perfect plane. So I’m not I’m not doing these things with the shoulder going down or I’m going way out or I see a lot of people working so hard going towards the ball or out. Just it’s simple. Make it level. This is 90 degrees. Then tilt over and then just have that level feeling and you’ll be in a perfect position up at the top. There’s no extra movement. There’s no hitches. There’s no girations. It’s the simple rotation around the tilt that you’ve set up at address. Now, now you sort of kissed it a little bit um where you were talking about the next element which was the takeaway in the back swing. Hey, thanks for watching this video.
